[Q] Atrix HD USB - Fastboot Works, Android does not - Motorola Atrix HD

I'm new to the Atrix HD, but have been around since the OG Droid (followed by a Droid 2, Droid 4, then Galaxy Nexus). I just picked up an Atrix HD for the first time.
USB works for fastboot - Windows 7 recognizes it, fastboot shows USB connected.
If phone is turned off, and connect USB to PC, phone boots up.
If phone is turned off, and connect USB to power adapter, it will charge.
Once booted into android, USB does not work at all. I've tried 2 different cables (both of which work to power it when connected to the wall charger) and 2 different physical machines across 3 different OS's - all with the same result. Once in Android, USB is not recognized. Nothing happens, no indication in the OS that a device is even detected.
I've tried RSD back to stock - but this did not resolve the issue.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Weird... Which Recovery are you using? Also, when did this problem started? Did you formated any partition? Any new ROM?

It was completely stock - OS and recovery.
I purchased it off ebay, so - I'm not sure when it started. I've been in contact with the buyer, and he said he never tried connecting to a PC.
With that being said, I was able to get it to work on my mac with a Nook cable. Same cable will not work in on my laptop in Win 7 or in Fedora 20 for this phone.
While not ideal, I was able to get the phone to it's desired state by using the mac (CWM recovery and CM11 ROM). After changing to CWM and CM11, phone exhibits same behavior still on Win 7 and Fedora when using a generic or genuine OEM Motorola cable (came with my Droid 4) as well as using the cables on the Mac. The only way it works is with the Nook cable on the Mac. Using the OEM or generic while attached to a wall adapter, the phone does charge.
The only thing I can think of with the Nook cable is that the connector is slightly longer than a typical USB adapter. I'm not sure why this works as I can not see any damage to the phone's USB socket.

This is really weird. But I think this is a hardware issue, even when the port may not show any signs of abuse or something like that. If you connect the OEM Motorola cable to the Mac, does it works? If it doesn't, it's very likely to be hardware issue. Also, you got it from Ebay, that's suspicious... Any way, another thing that you can do is download all Motorola drivers for Windows and try with a ton of USB cables.

Stupid question, but what exactly are you trying to do with it? And do you have USB debugging enabled?

Charging would be a good start, but file xfer would be nice too. I've tried with USB debugging both disabled and enabled.

[Q] USB Connection strangeness?

I just got the Captivate last week. I've noticed that it doesn't recognize the USB connection if I just plug in the cable at "normal" speed. If I plug in the USB cable s-l-o-w-l-y the phone recognizes the cable and everything works. If I don't plug in s-l-o-w-l-y the computer gives me a USB inserted sound but the phone doesn't seem to know it is connected.
I've also noticed that the phone will (with the slow insertion) always say usb connected once the cable is inserted even if the computer end is not connected.
Anyone else experience this? Thoughts? Bad phone or bad cable?
What ROM are you using?
What USB Drivers do you have installed if any?
What OS are you running?
Pretty much it depends... if your using a custom ROM that could be the culprit though it doesn't sound like it from what you have posted.
Try re-installing your USB drivers for the Samsung Captivate. Make sure your running the correct version. (Search for Design Gears OTA Odin 1 Click post - has the drivers linked there).
And of course... it could be your computer itself. Reboot fixes 90% of all computer issues
Firmware 2.1-update1
Baseband I897UCJH7
Stock - not rooted. Drivers do not seem to be the issue. It happens on multiple computers. Rebooting phone and/or computer does not change things. Same under Windows and Linux.
I kind of have to slowly inch the USB cable into the phone until the phone recognizes it. If the computer end is not connected to anything, the phone sometimes still will recognize the USB cable and say USB connected. If I plug the phone end in first, then the computer end the phone doesn't recognize the connection.

Not using original cable but it works to charge through the PC so why would it not be recognized as a device?

Power and data pins are different. The cable may charge your device, but it doesn't guarantee data transfer to work. Many cables use MicroUSB connectors, but no all cables have all pins connected. I have an LG charger that works with no issues on LG phone but can't charge Captivate. In the same time Blackberry charger and USB cable both work fine with Captivate. I have also a generic USB cable that can charge Captivate but doesn't provide data transfer. Original Samsung cable works for charging and data as expected. I think you should try with another USB cable.

Is the cable that came with my Moto X a charge only?

So I just got my bootloader unlocked today. I went home this evening to plug my phone into my computer and start installing the custom recovery, only to find that both computers in my house won't recognize the phone when it's plugged in. To my dismay, no USB icon showed up in the status bar, and it just said "Charging". No notification in Windows (or the Ubuntu computer either). Either my cable has gone bad and only charges, or the original cable doesn't transfer data. I've also checked to make sure that Media Device (MTP) is checked. Funny thing was I was using the cable from my OG Droid at work today to charge my phone on the work computer. I know the USB Debugging icon had shown up so I know it was working properly, it won't show up on my computers at home.
Can anyone confirm with me that the original cable is USB only?
No, the original cable should do both. Try another cable though, or use port on the pc. Otherwise it's your drivers on the pc.
You have USB debugging checked in developer options? You have drivers installed on your computer? Making sure to use the USB port on the back of the computer, not the front?

"Fastboot AC" no PC or Mac seems to recognize my phone!

Hi all. I'm running Android 4.4.2 with Sense 6 on InsertCoin - S-OFF. It's been fine for about a full year now - I havent touched ROM/firmware in about 6 months. Just this past week, the device is no longer recognizing any PC connections - it still charges fine with any USB plug, but seems to think every connection is an AC charger. Nothing pops up on my phone or the computer (mac or PC). I have USB debugging on.
ADB does not see the device, in normal boot or in Fastboot.
Fastboot on the phone says "Fastboot AC" where it used to say "Fastboot USB"
Is this a software issue I can rectify from the phone? I have TWRP and root, so I can perform certain things on the device itself. Or should I go to T-Mobile and try to get a replacement (I have insurance on the device)

Are you sure you are using a usb data cable and not only a usb charging cable? Usb data cable have 5V+, Ground, Data+ and Data- connections. Charging cable only have 5V+ and Ground connection and will not be able to communicate with the device. You can test your capble on another device to confirm the cable have data capabilities (using a camera for example or any other device with a micro usb port).
Even if you are sure that you are using a data usb cable, you might want to try another one, maybe that one you are using is defective.

Thanks - yes, I tested this on my Nexus 7 too. All 3 cables I tried connect the N7 to both the Mac and PC fine, I was able to flash an OTA to it. However, the same 3 cables product no results for the HTC One M7.

it doenst sounds good, maybe a defective usb port on your phone... Maybe some dirt inside? Try to clean your port with a cotton swab and Isopropyl alcohol

TouchPad Cable

I haven't used my TouchPad for a few years, and I wanted to give it another try. Unfortunately I have misplaced the original cable that came with the unit. For charging purposes I'm okay, since I have a dock, but now that I wanted to possibly upgrade OS, I can't do anything without the original cable. Tried a few regular USB to micro USB cable, and none work. The computer (I tried Mac and Windows) does not see TouchPad connected.
Would like to upgrade from Cyanogen 4.1.2 to at least 4.4.4, or maybe Nougat, but without the original cable, looks like it's impossible.
Any idea where to get a replacement cable? Amazon has a few options (not too many), but I'm not sure if those would work. Some reviews are saying that charging works fine, but I'm not sure about the data transfer.
Any help is much appreciated.
You should be able to use any kind of Micro USB cable that has a big thicker width. Especially the really short ones won't work because they don't contain the correct connectors. You should just head to the store and a cable that you've got from them should work, but I doubt you would need one if you have a working cable. You have not explained what kind of modes you've tried, what you were even doing
Have you tried
1. Installing novacom driver? (Assuming you are wanting to mod)
2. Changing file transfer to transfer data (MTP)?
Thank you for the reply.
Yes, I was trying to upgrade to Lineage11 build and install Kitkat 4.4.4, with the idea to possibly upgrade it later to Android 7 Nougat. Right now I have Cyanogen 4.1.2, which I've installed a few years ago, but haven't used my TouchPad for quite a while. So, at first I had to recharge the battery which was completely discharged. I still have the original charger, but the USB cable I had didn't do a thing. The tablet was giving me a warning to use the original cable, which I don't have anymore (can't find it). I left the USB cable plugged in for 2-3 hours, and got no signs of life from the tablet. Then I remembered I had the charging dock somewhere, I luckily found it, and after only about 10-15 minutes, the tablet was back to life and started to charge.
The next day, I wanted to proceed with the upgrade. I still have WebOS installed, but this time I wanted to get rid of it. I installed Novacom driver and Toolbox v42. However, after putting the TP into WebOS recovery mode and plugging the USB cable between the computer and the tablet, I was getting the message that the connection to the TP cannot be established. I tried it on Windows 10, but also on a MacBook. Nothing worked. That's why I'm suspecting there is something wrong with the cable. It did not charge the tablet initially, and then it failed to transfer data. Since I have no idea where my original USB cable, that came with the tablet is, I ordered a new cable from Amazon. Just a regular Micro USB cable. It should arrive in a few days, and I hope it will work.
Thanks again for replying, and I'll let you know what happens when I get the cable.
I am still waiting for the new cable from Amazon. It will take another day or two, but now I really wonder if the cable I already have is bad. I just used it to successfully charge a couple of headphones. It worked just fine. But when I try to use it on my TP, no data transfer is possible, and as I said before it won't charge the tablet either. Really concerned that the new Amazon cable will do the same, which means - nothing. Quite confused, to say the least.
Sorry to bother you again folks, but this thing is driving me crazy. I don't know if it is cable related or not, but apparently I cannot install tptoolbox_v42.
Working in Windows 10, and after successfully installing Novacom driver, when I double click on the tptb_v42_win.bat file, the message I am getting is that the connection to TP cannot be established.
Then I tried running the same bat file as administrator. Now the message is that it cannot find TPToolbox-2015-01-08-v42.bin file. That binary file is sitting in the very same folder, as the executable.
What am I doing wrong? Or is it the cable?
Thanks!

The cable must provide data and charging, if the cable is charging the other phones properly then the cables is only to charge the phone and does not provide data.
The Toolbox can only be use to install an specific Android ROM and Recovery, it will not flash any other ROM version.

That has to be the problem with the cable I was using. The one I'm expecting to arrive from Amazon today is a charge/data cable. It should work...I hope.
Yup, it was the cable. Obviously what I had was a charging only cable. Just got a package from Amazon, tried the cable right away, and it works like a charm (charge and data).
Thank you, djared704 and HP_TOUCHPAD
