upgrading phone from KIES problem - Galaxy S Advance I9070 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello when i connected my galaxy s advance to kies it notified me that there is a firmware upgrade, i pressed okay, when it reached to 100% it stopped and an error shows up "failed to run firmware upgrade unknown error occurred" how do i fix that?
P.S I don't want to update from ODIN, last time i hard bricked my phone and i'm really scared that it will happen again.
Thank you!

Did you tried to retry? Maybe your internet connection went down when firmware was downloading...

Don't afraid from hard brick. Embrace the Odin you'll always need it. Do as this
Extract the firmware file
Open Odin v3.09
Reboot phone in Download Mode
Connect phone and wait until you get a blue sign in Odin
Add the firmware file to PDA
Make sure re-partition is NOT ticked
Click the start button, sit back and wait 6-7 minutes

If you upgraded from Kies the you really dont need to worry. Kies has a option in it called "Emergency Firmware Recovery". Just connect your phone to PC. Start Kies>Tools>Emergency Firmware Recovery.
Your phone will appear in the list below. Just select it and kies will do the rest of the job.
If you are really afraid and you have your warranty then just take it to the nearest Samsung Service Centre and they must repair it for you since the problem was created from Kies itself.

I've try to upgrade my SM-G530F in samsung kies. But it said failed to run firmware upgrade unknown error occurred who can help me
Thankyou

Note can't connect to Kies

Kies tried to make a connection to Note but fail. I got error message, can not start service on device, please disconnect then reconnect the device. any help please.
note can connect only to the latest kies version. mine is 2.1.1.11124_17. make sure u have the latest kies version.
even after the latest version, sometimes i had problem connecting to kies.
i first opened the kies application in my pc and then connected the cable to phone. it helped. but occasionally i had the connecting problem.
if you need kies just for a transfer, then try using kies air in your phone.

Try these steps,
Make sure you are in Stock ROM
Upgrade Kies
Re install USB Drivers in PC
Try with different USB Ports
Try with Different USB Cable
Try this:
With Kies opened and cable connected, shut down the phone, wait until the menu and return buttons close, then restart phone.
I tried 2 computers already.

Try with that , if that also dint work , you do factory reset or Odlin Flash to New Update.
Thanks for all the help. I finally got it to work by power down the note then restarted it.
This is latest firmware.
Current firmware version: PDA:KKA/PHONE:KKS/CSC:KK3(XEU)
latest firmware version: PDA:KKA/PHONE:KKS/CSC:KK3(XEU)
Is this right

Ya may be.. coz different region ll get different version update. in India last update we got KL3
Follow this link see which is the last update for your region
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Mine is a UK note
i think XXLA1 2.3.6 is the final update for your region.. but this update is not available via Kies.
What are you trying to do that requires KIES anyway? If it's for file transfer then just put it into mass storage mind or use KIES air!

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Note not connecting to Kies, in Recovery Mode

Hi,
Yesterday, I was trying to upgrade from 2.3.6 to ICS via Kies.
The upgrade got stuck at 45% and I had to disconnect the cord, as I had a flight to catch
Now the phone shows an error "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again."
When i connect the phone via the cabe, to the computer, using Kies, it gives me error saying "Device not responding. To resolve the issue, reboot the device."
This is how I tried to resolve the issue, but with no success..
I have rebooted a number of times without success
I clicked on 'Troubleshoot connection error' and reinstalled the driver multiple times, but without any success
What options do I have?
Best regards,
Pavan Kota

You have two option:
1.Take your phone to service centre and say them "I was updating the phone with kies but at 45% it said some error and I have to disconnect the cable and nowit shows me *place holder* error"But dont say them you pluged the cable out during upgrade.
2.flash a stock rom with pc odin.
Just flash stock ics via pc odin. Its quite simple diy fix

Hi @vijai2011. Thanks for your thoughts..
I would prefer not doing both, if possible. Hoping for some solution..
Quick questions:
If I flash a stock rom with pc odin, will I loose my stored pictures / videos? I did not take a backup. Am cursing myself for that right now.
Where do i get the stock rom for flashing, along with the procedure? I assume a 'stock rom' would mean an official rom.
Can i use the 'stock rom' for ICS directly or do i need to go back to 2.3.6?

1.No you wont.Only phone contacts(not the contacts in sim),apps, messages are removed.Files on sd card is intact.
2.Stoch rom along with procedure here.Follow 1.b alone in the thread if you donot need root.Yes stock rom means official rom.
3.You can flash directly.
Dear @vijai2011,
Thanks for the post. I will try the ICS Stock Rom Flash if nothing else works..
Would like to see if there is something I can do, to be able to get Kies to recognize the phone right now..
Will keep you posted..

I would suggest you,you never use kies for update .use it only to take backup and restore.Just flash the rom with link and kies will detect the phone.

kies is always S$#@.If you need to update, use ota.
Solved: Got a new USB Cable
Finally resolved this issue without flashing a stock ROM.
After trying out everything, I got a doubt about the USB cable and got a new official Samsung cable.. and voila.. the Kies software detected the emergency recovery and proceeded.
Now the emergency recovery file from Samsung is over 1GB in size, and stops in between if the internet connection breaks. So ensure you have enough space, good bandwidth and proper monitoring, so you can restart in case it breaks.
And finally the ICS is now installed on my phone.. It looks very neat and sleak!
The patience paid off..
Depend on KIES Only for Upgrades

After my current experience, I would always recommend KIES to everyone.
It is a great software and I think it gets blamed unnecessarily because of completely unrelated issues.

Nope.Kies is ofcourse a [email protected]*& when it comes to software update.Even I wont go for OTA.I always use odin for software update
But When compared to kies,OTA is better.

Galaxy Note totally dead

Hi ive galaxy note which has totally no life in it. No power nothing at all. I tried a rom update from GB firmware to ICS 4.04 but it crashed and rebooted. Ive tried to restore firmware but cant get phone to connect to pc. Ive tried usb jig but nothing. No download mode or recovery works. Its 7 months old so was wondering if samsung would repair it for free under warranty? Please reply and all help will be appreciated.
Tick "allow automatic updating" for all the installed apps in palystore
And then go to playstore settings>auto update apps
Edit:Sorry..replied in the wrong thread

If your phone is not rooted and binary count is 0,they will probably fix it under warrenty
Even though if your binary count is not 0,as it is unable to enter download or recovery mode, they should fix it for free
Hi and thanks for the info.
Service center guys will fix it just take it to them..Best of luck with it

My watch is stuck on a screen saying
"Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
I can't get it to connect to Odin, adb, anything...
Can't get it into recovery or download mode.
If I hold the power button, it just flashes off quickly, then straight back into that screen.
Any ideas??
I understand you're in a panic because your device is having issues. But please read the forum rules and search for your issue before posting the same question in multiple threads like you just did. By you posting the same question over and over searching becomes difficult and people are less likely to help. Please try searching again. If you can't find a resolution post exactly what you did, and what files you were trying to load.
I haven't had any further progress.
When I try to flash with Odin, it gets stuck at SetupConnection..

No, but the device does "show up" in Odin. But again, doesn't get past Setup Connection when I try to flash something.
Ok... Fixed my issue.
Just had to flash the MK7 firmware. That was the ONLY one that works.
Thanks all!

Yeah mate,
You just have to download a stock MK7 firmware from sammobile. I don't think it matters which region, I used Australia (because that's where I am).
Then connect up the watch, right click on Odin 3.09 to "open as administrator", make sure the watch shows up in a "COM" port, load the MD5 into AP, then start.
Not sure how much more detail I can give.
Good luck guy!

That's exactly what I did but for some reason mine is not working
I got the same issue. When i do it, im still stock at "SetupConnection.."
By the way, im from Denmark, so which region do i have to choose? Cause, denmark is not on the list.
And, what were you flashing at first when you bricked your Gear ?
A friend of mine went through the same problems 2 days ago, he tried to flash directly Tizen 2.2.1.1 over Null_rom (Android), and it went bad like your Gear.
I found out he needed to first flash Tizen 2.2.0, the very first Tizen version that came out.
This version weights 200MB+ than the latest.
I guess it's all the Android -> Tizen conversion software and tools that are embedded, and if flashing a newer Tizen version directly, it fails because of this 200MB+ stuff lacking in the rom.
Is it what you did too ?
I don't know if this is documented somewhere down here, didn't searched before reply.
edit: user nunyabiziz too had sorted it out : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53872341&postcount=3

so the sime way to fix this is to :
1. get the stock firmware
2. remove the ".md5" from the file name and leave ".tar" (example-J200MUBU1AOK2_J200MZTA1AOK2_J200MUBU1AOK2_HOME_v2.tar.md5 to J200MUBU1AOK2_J200MZTA1AOK2_J200MUBU1AOK2_HOME_v2.tar.
3. now the file can be extracted with 7z or winrar .
4- after extraction is done take the recovery.img and achieve it with the .tar format
should look like this ("recovery.tar")
5 use Odin to flash file to device
-first connect device with device in download mode
-click on "AP" and select "recovery.tar"
6-Start !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
