[Q] How does one "launch in to recovery" while with TWRP installed? - Moto X Q&A

Before I unlocked and installed TWRP on my Moto X, I had the option to restart into recovery mode which gave me system write access. But now with TWRP, when I press launch to recovery, it just launches my custom recovery; TWRP. How do I reboot into recovery like before, or is it not required anymore once I've unlocked the bootloader?

Since you have TWRP installed you already have read write access.
Have you flashed SuperSU to gain root?

Not required for what? Tell us what are you trying to do. The final goal.

I don't even... What I'm getting from your post is that you unlocked your bootloader and flashed a custom recovery but don't understand why you did it nor what the benefits of each are. Go read up on unlocked bootloaders and what their benefits are. You'll get your answer a lot quicker that way.

[Q] How do I root developer edition?

I just received my moto x developer version. I must be an idiot because I can't find instructions on how to root it. Every post I can find is about rooting the locked version. People talk about the fact that I don't need an exploit because my boot loader is unlocked. I get that but I don't know how to root. Can someone kindly point me to a tutorial on how to root if my boot loader is already unlocked.
Install a recovery from the dev section. Either TWRP or CWM will be fine.
Then download SuperSU
flash supersu in recovery.

Thanks! I'll give it a shot. Much appreciated!
There are a few threads... but to elborate on what gunnyman has said... If your bootloader is unlocked, either Dev Edition, or you have a phone from a carrier like T-Mobile or Sprint that allow you to unlock via Moto's web site then its pretty easy to flash alternate recovery, and root from there.
Steps see -> https://plus.google.com/110773150384694258853/posts/VhtJtg92sTP (has links to the files you need too.) and there are threads in the General and Developer sections here too.
Same process works if you have 4.2.2 or 4.4 on your phone.
Is there a way to root the developer edition and keep stock recovery ?
Pete
Flash custom recovery, flash root package in custom recovery, re-flash stock recovery

You don't have to flash the custom recovery, just boot into it. Once you have the root .zip on your phone reboot into the bootloader and fastboot boot (recovery) and flash the root zip from there. You will have root and stock recovery.
The reason I'm asking is to retain the ability to recieve OTA updates ?
How does one boot into a custom recovery without loading it?

When you enter the fastboot command, use "boot" instead of "flash" and it will just temporarily boot into the recovery without flashing over the stock partition. You can flash the root zip as normal and when you reboot your phone, the custom recovery will be gone.
As far as receiving OTAs, I'm not sure if you'll get them or not. If you go modifying things like kernel, ROM, or even things like the build.prop, chances are it won't work or will break something. The good thing about having an unlocked bootloader is that it's nearly impossible to hard-brick the device unless you're reckless.
Are you sure this works? When I try 'fastboot boot recovery.img' it gives me a "failed command" error. I kicked off another thread asking how to do this since this is what I typically do with Nexus devices. I know that fastboot now has a -c command that might help but I don't know the magic to put after -c to make it work.
If anyone has been able to 'fastboot boot recovery.img' on a Moto X, please lemme know. This would be my preferred path rather than flashing the custom recovery and then the stock recovery back.

What happens when you just type fastboot?
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
This has been said already but you can just "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img", flash your superuser zip then "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img". You are using the correct image name in the command, correct?
Yes, this was said in the thread I started but then I saw someone suggest what I'd been wanting to do. To answer the questions, if I just type fastboot it gives me the help output like it should, fastboot devices shows my device, fastboot reboot works, fastboot reboot-bootloader works, etc. Essentially, I believe that either there is a command string that I could hand to -c or this just won't work on MotoX's like it does all the Nexus devices that I've played with.
Fortunately I did hit Moto up and they gave me permission to download the 4.4 image so I do have the stock recovery.

Custom Recovery for ME170cx?

I think the answer is no right now, but I wanted to check. I see that TWRP is available for a few models but not this one. I noticed hen attempting to access recovery mode after updating to 4.4.2 and rooting the tablet that there is no recovery installed. It is possible to use the ADB or Fastboot modes, and you can do a factory restore, but no recovery per se.
Same problem here please help!!!
With the locked bootloader, there is no "by the book" custom recovery. You will need to use a temporary CWM session. ROMs can be made and installed, however with the locked bootloader, the unsigned images will fail to install.

A Stock ROM and Bootloader that will leave bootloader unlocked?

As per another thread, I am having issues (bootloops at the android/moto logo screen) after replacing my Turbo screen. I am unlocked and rooted. I know this cause I was before I replaced the screen (used Sunshine) and had RR custom ROM installed. Still unlocked because I can get to the bootloader screen (Power + Vol Down) and it says "Phone is Unlocked. Status code: 3".
To try to at least get a booting phone: Is there ANY stock ROM and Bootloader that I can flash that will still keep my phone UNLOCKED? I don't want to re-lock it and then have it locked forever (which I think the latest stock updates does). I am thinking that if I can flash a stock bootloader and ROM, then I can reflash TWRP and custom ROM (and get rid of the bootloop).
I would assume that if I had put something together incorrectly then it wouldn't boot at all and I wouldn't be able to get to the bootloader screen.
Thanks for any info/advice.
P.S. I did try just reflashing TWRP but it still bootloops at the same point; and I can't get into recovery.
So, when you boot to bootloader (Phone off, then power and volume down button at the same time), and you then arrow up to "recovery" when you push the button to go there, what happens? Is TWRP not still installed or something? the only reason it wouldn't be installed is if you flashed stock firmware and wiped it out with stock recovery.
Use the hardware method
First of all, you have to turn off your phone.
Then, you need to press Volume Down button and hit power key.
Bootloader mode will be then displayed on your device.
From there, use volume up and down buttons in order to scroll up and down and power key to select.

________
If your Droid Turbo bootloader is unlocked, flashing stock firmware with bootloader won't lock it. The newest firmware is to PREVENT the bootloader from being unlocked by Sunshine. It won't lock it back.
However, with stock Marshmallow you will have to re-root with older SuperSu beta for initial root. Flashing with newer SuperSu causes bootloops. After you have initial root then you can update to newer SuperSu.
But first tell me what happens when you try the hardware method of getting to recovery.

also you can force the phone to boot to TWRP, even if you don't have TWRP installed on the phone...
fastboot boot recovery.img
Where "recovery.img" is your TWRP file on you PC.
if you named it TWRP.img, then the command would be
fastboot boot TWRP.img
If you need to force the phone to go to the bootloader, the commad is
adb reboot bootloader
and then from there
fastboot boot recovery.img
(where "recovery" is whatever you have named the TWRP file.)
It's basically "temporary" TWRP. It doesn't install TWRP, but makes your phone boot to TWRP from your bootloader screen. It uses the TWRP file (whatever you have named it) from your PC folder. You then will boot into TWRP, can install stuff, make a backup, whatever you want to do. From TWRP, you can even install TWRP!
But you can reinstall your custom ROM, or you can restore a backup -- whatever you want to do from the "temporary" TWRP.
I used this a couple of years ago to use TWRP to make a backup of STOCK Kitkat image. I was booted into TWRP but TWRP was not installed on the phone. The phone was still pure stock, so I could easily make a backup image.
Then I rooted the phone! And made another backup image. It was rooted stock, still with no TWRP installed.
And then last I actually installed TWRP, was rooted and made a backup of that. And posted all those images for people to use. But a lot of people forget that you can BOOT TO TWRP even if TWRP is not installed on the phone. And that "temporary" TWRP (one session) will still allow you to do anything you want.
It's a useful trick to know!

Flash TWRP without using fastboot?

Hi everyone,
I had a fully rooted P20 Pro -- unlocked bootloader, flashed TWRP, and installed Magisk. I tried to update the firmware from CLT-L04 8.1.0.107(C792) to CLT-L04 8.1.0.109(C792)-FULL, but kept booting into TWRP without installing the update. I found this thread and flashed the provided stock recovery to try to install the update -- didn't seem to work either. Moreover, now whenever I tried to reboot into bootloader or recovery, the phone just reboots into system, which means I cannot flash TWRP back using fastboot. As well, the phone seems to have lost its root permission.
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

That is not possible. What did you do to reboot into bootloader? Did you try adb reboot bootloader?

Yes, when I enter "adb reboot bootloader" into command prompt, the phone would restart, but back to system. This happens whenever I enter "adb reboot recovery" as well.
I was able to wipe everything and upgrade with eRecovery. Afterwards, I can access bootloader again. Thanks!
