I'm really not impressed by the S5 at all. HTC it's yours for the taking.
What are your thoughts.
Heart rate monitor is pretty cool. Looks the same as the s4 so if you like that look you should be happy.

As long as you slap a cover on the S5 it won't matter if it was decorated pink and covered in flowers. If the M8 does have that bezel and soft keys like the numerous leaked pics show then you're going to have to get creative on how to hide that monumental f-up. My brother is looking to upgrade his EVO LTE and as much as I've refrained from recommending Samsung I just can't get over the M8's apparent waste of screen space.
Don't people consider the unnecessary hardware buttons by Samsung a waste of screen space? To me the M8 looks much better. I don't think the HTC label at the bottom is all that bad either.
There used to be a guy around here, I think in the EVO 3d days, that always said he didn't care if the phone was pink and had pictures of dicks all over it cause he would always put a case on it. Rank just reminded me of that guy lol
Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk
Not exact comparison but you get the idea. Samsung's hardware button doesn't have the same impact as HTC's bezel-software combo. It almost looks like the M8 has a bigger bezel than the One but can't tell for sure. Rumor is the M8will have a 0.3-0.4 screen increase over the One, and judging by the illustration that isn't enough to overcome the real estate being used by the software keys. No idea how newcomers will feel but I know if I bought the M8 in this form, every time I look at the screen it will remind me of the extra room I had on my One. I mean, what did HTC do with the extra room inside? Did the extra lens up top mean they had to move things around toward the bottom? I would love to hear HTC's excuse for this, it really irritates me.

haha that wasn't me but its true. I bought a clear case for my One because its a crime hiding it, otherwise all phones look generally the same when protected properly.
Well rank just go ahead and get your self the s5.

Seriously, if you look at the grand scheme of things, the fact that HTC is using extra screen real-estate for their logo is a isn't that big of a deal. It's petty, really. The fact is, if HTC comes out with a phone with nicer pictures, video, form factor, and other features, you're not going to care after you buy it.

I use this heart rate monitor by runtastic on my one and it works great - I've tested it against a real polar hrm, and it's incredibly accurate. To the extent that I think having one built in is just a gimmick.

No thanks, not seeing anything worth the price of upgrading which says a lot given I'm an annual upgrader. My main point was cases hide ugliness, for the most part.
I'd rather use my HTC without a case but i don't want it damaged. It's by far the most beautiful phone I've seen. If HTC pulls a Samsung and releases the same thing with new specs i'd take my fanboy ass down to the store.
Is the s5 water tight? That gotta be a cool thing. also, how did they do with heart rate? I don't think put the phone in your pocket you can get heart rate.

I don't get it. People have so many issues with this HTC one. I own my htc one since day one and I've never had any issues, no purple camera tint, no WiFi or Bluetooth issues, no heating issues, no battery issues, no design issues, no signal issues, no 4g issues, and no slowdowns and speaker blowing. My 4g signal is always on, I barely use my WiFi at home and my optimum WiFi when I go out. Seems unreal but I guess I got extremely lucky.

My concern as well. We have immersive mode, but it takes a little tinkering to make the ascetics of the screen seem nice while staring at it.
From what I've read most of the reasoning behind this change is so SENSE can become a lighter UI as it relates to future ANDROID updates. It should help future update processes become a smoother transition. Changes like soft keys potentially help them market the point that HTC will update future flagships fir 2 years.
Crossing my fingers for them to get creative with the HTC LOGO at the bottom of the screen.
We can all pick apart what any said manufacturer or designer does or does not do, but my take on HTC is they have made a company wide change in philosophy, implemented herr in the US and in UK to have a grassroots touch with their customer.
They want our input and to me it shows.

Gotta, thanks guys, looks like you'll have to hold your finger to the heart rate sensor for some time for it to pick up. It's kinda not so practical, not like a fitness watch that will sorta keep an eye on your heart rate as you go. How often will you put your finger to that sensor to get your heart rate?
so to achieve water tight, do they give up the battery cover or something?

Well, I had really bad 4G issue before. I found my One works great all the time, but the 4G was horrible, not only because the coverage(fake coverage map on Sprint), but also when in the 4G area, it won't keep on 4G, dropped all the time back to 3G, until last December fix.

Have the similar feeling about that bezel thing. I can't understand what are they thinking, for brand awareness? if that's the case, why don't they just keep the One style with two hard buttons, maybe just make the htc as home button, which makes great sense.

It's just a phone, so I hold it to my ear. But you could do both, I guess. The phone is very large, and it is a little awkward the first few days, but now it feels great. The screen size is really sweet. I have to admit I've nearly dropped it once already.. It's kind of unwieldy sometimes. I'm always super careful, I've never dropped my HTC HD2 (4,3 inch) even once, in over two years time, and I've never dropped my classic iPod which I've been using for over 7 years or so. But this phone is so big, I've nearly dropped it in just a few weeks. I'll have to be extra careful with my Note. But other then me being scared of dropping it, the size is fine. It's great, actually. In tablet mode at 213 DPI, you can fit an entire a4 sheet on it in portrait mode, and still be able to read the text!
Seexxxxxyyyy!
No seriously! Feels normal, completely normal! Have been using it for one and a half months now and now when I use other phones, they all feel TOO small. Even the HTC One X, I tried it today, felt too small.
And yes, I am waiting for the 5.5 or 5.7 inch version. 6 inch.. Why not!? My first worry before getting note was the size, after a few days using it, it's the best thing about it!
Im not ashamed of pulling the big boy outta my pocket and answer a call!
It feels amazing! I'm so glad I dumped my iphone 4s for galaxy note! I couldn't be happier about the decision. All those years what a waste... [email protected]#k apple and genius bar asshats!
I LOVE MY GALAXY NOTE!!!!!
There's no shame involved! I have the flip it case which replaces the battery back with flip screen cover attached - protects really well adds virtually no bulk at all and you can use the phone with the case closed as it has earpiece cut out. After a day the phone size really didn't bother me - there's such a big advertising push in UK at the mo a lot more people know what it is rather than a month ago. Can be a conversation starter and a simple play of the Samsung demo vid blows most people away with first experience of Samoled. I honestly believe we'll see even bigger phones (well maybe different aspect ratio) in the future.
Of course if you had to have the case open to use the phone...

Awkward at first, second nature after a few weeks in my case.
Only problem still present is that I'm unable to dial one handed, but having my frequently dialed numbers as shortcuts on one of my panels is a good way and quicker way of dialing.

Not bad. For long periods of talk, i use a Bluetooth ear phone
I have used BT headsets for years, and tend to use one with the Note while on the move. If I am with people I tend to turn it off, and then I use the Note as a 'normal' phone.
I find it quite normal now after 4 months. Nobody else seems to bother about it, but I am a large bloke, 1.93m. I too get the amazed requests to see it, but generally when I use it as a tablet. At least two people have bought one based on seeing mine.
Feel ok for me. I using a bookcase type of flip casing. Initially, need some getting use to flip open the cover and slide to answer the call. Still a two hand operation when call come in when the cover is closed and latched.
As a phone, it never fails to amaze me that the Iphone looks terribly a miniscule/midget device than my Note.
As a phone and a tablet, it surely blows away the Iphone, no contest at all.
As when taking calls, I don't feel awkward holding it on my ear as my ear is actually also a bit large also (than a regular person's ear), , so the Note fits perfectly to the tee.
I have had my Nexus 4 for a week now. It was sitting on the table this morning, and it managed to slip off, I cant remember what I set it on but when I was looking for it I couldn't find it. So I rang the phone and found it under the table.
There are 3 chips now on the screen. They are like little dots, they don't seem to be the same as scratches as they are deeper on the screen. Is there anyway I can smooth them out. They are almost like small grains of sand stuck on the phones screen. Very annoying.
Sorry to hear that happened. Looks like if it is dropped on a hard surface it is hit or miss.

The exact same thing happened to me. The phone is super slippery on some surfaces. I put it on a desk and after a few minutes I heard the phone hitting the floor. Screen totally cracked and not responding.
I did catch the phone almost slipping off the a coffee table before but I never expected it to do it from my desk because it looked like it was resting on its surface firmly.

Hello,
Been following this thread for a couple months now, almost bought the xz, but seeing both took their sweet time to launch and one's finally available...
So just returned from a mall, seen it in 2 stores, live.
It looks really nice just as pictured by everybody in these forums. The screen looks amazing, very sharp, cannot compare to anything else. Sound thru loudspeakers best I heard in a phone.
However..
The built quality seemed to lack.. Alot.
The metal parts didn't seem to be aligned properly to the point where visually they were protruding out; the corners felt rugged, especially where the metal will stick out. There were minor gaps, albeit too visible on both models.
Now, surely I have heard about these possible issues. Wasn't too worried before as consider myself less picky about things in general. But after seeing the store model, I am a little worried. I know I get to bring it back if not happy my question is how the store demo version compares to the actual thing? Aren't the demo units supposed to be better, at least in build quality? One thing I am sure of, will carefully inspect it in store.
As an aside, all my phones past 10 years bought online: I wouldn't take the same chance with one whatever return policy.

I had a few issues with build quality on my first few handsets , rough edges etc and then on my last one (which didn't suffer from the capptive button problem) I decided to just take care of the rough edges myself and used a bit of 2000 wet and dry sand paper on the polished edges and white band, now have a perfect handset

Pixel issues are going to increase as pixel density has more than doubled over the last few years. No way around it. We also need to remember that it is in no way HTC fault and that every single phone manufacturer has similar failure rates.
From what a fair few people on here have said, the most recent builds are fixing these issues.
I myself have a model with very minor build quality issues but it's not enough to make me want to get a replacement or switch to another phone.
The phones so good that these minor issues can be overlooked, by me at least.

Checked a little bit on the issues I seen or heard of before, mechanically it's almost perfect, alignment and all, no dead or stuck pixels, call quality seems alright, sound recording and playback.
The only issue if I may say so, on maximum volume there's a bit of distortion on loudspeakers.
I will get to play more with it this weekend, can hardly wait, but so far it seems like a nice replacement for my sgs2.

So s5 has the best mobile display, one of the best cameras out on a smartphone, the best battery performance in the market, has water resistance, heartbeat and fingerprint sensors..guess this should clear up any doubts people initially had about this phone being just an incremental update to the s4

This video honestly surprised me, the sheer resilience of the thing is incredible but I would guarantee the screen would have cracked had he put it face down and then ran it over but nonetheless it is still an incredible feat.

Wow, color me impressed. Not only was the car test impressive for the front screen, but I was at least expecting the back plastic to crack. Damn. I was already impressed with the S5 to begin with, but this just put it over the top for me.
Just one more week...
Think I have now made my choice between the S5 and M8 now thanks!
Pre ordered mine today from at&t. I can't wait.
That was tough to watch, but I'm impressed!

Lol, isn't it? The gravity! Those cracking sounds! Like a horror movie.
S5 always wins. Always landed further than S4 , how weird.

What do you guys think about this drop test?

Not bad. It seems the S5 takes most of the everyday drops well and far better than it's predecessors, anything from human height and you'll be all right, unless landing face down, which still KOs the screen.
BTW, is there an article out there analyzing the likeliness of a face down land? You know, pulling out of pocket and dropping, slipping while taking a photo, someone accidentally knocking out of the hand and dropping from ear... out of 100 drops, do we know roughly how many lands face down?
HOLY GORILLA GLASS BATMAN!!! I think I need a valium after that. I would really like to see some of that old batman animation added to this video. You know, POW, CRRAACK!, KAPOW!, THWACK!, ect. You get the idea.

I dropped my S5 twice but it still intact 1 is from a phone receiving height to concrete floor and another from my bed ( which is about 35cm high) with no problem. Phone in good condition even with the bezel ....

This is the best test I've seen and it makes me feel good about upgrading. Also saw it go against an iPhone 5s and the iPhone went to pieces while the S5 soldiered on.

Hello Everyone,
As the title states, I'm curious as to what you all have to say about it. I recently went with the M8 but I'm not sure if I made the right decision.
There's something about the M8 that just doesn't feel right. I think it's the height. It's kinda awkward to hold.
Anyway, what do you all think? What made you go with the S5? Should I return the M8 and get the S5??
They're both great phones. Stop worrying and enjoy your phone. I choosed S5 coming from S4 and S2 before that. It all depends on your personality, if you care about metal case and / or superb front speakers, you made the right decision. If you want removable battery, water and dust proof, then you better switch.

I left an M7. Had to get a new phone with carrier change. Went with S5 for fingerprint scanner and removable battery

I had a play with a m8 and I didn't like the length and wasted bezel space. It looks and feels very premium, but a bit slippery in the hand.

I did consider it before it was released, but the moment I heard it kept the sh1tty 4mp camera it was out of the question.

Understandable. How's your battery life been? The M8 had better life than my Note 3 so far.
I want the best build quality on a phone and the htc one can't hold a candle to the gs5. So no, no htc for me lol.

Yeah the camera is cool but it isn't very good when I compared it to the GS5 when I was at best buy.
I owned the M8 for 5 days before I got my S5. The M8 looks nice if you're not using it. Then when you start using it you realize how ridiculous the bezels are, how tall it is, how heavy it is, how cumbersome it is to hold, how slippery it is, how fragile it is, etc.
Then when you use it more you realize how mediocre the camera is and how mind numbingly boring Sense is.
So in my opinion, make the switch lol.

Whoa whoa, hold on a second. Are you saying the GS5 had better build quality than the M8? Cause that ain't true lol
Seriously considered M8 and then was forced to "consider" it again for 5 minutes in store. The 4MP camera was a deal braker for me.
I want a phone to replace my aging S2, which takes great pictures but sometimes there is just not enough pixels to give you the details (especially since there's no zoom). A 4MP camera is so 2008.
Also I don't mind the plastic at all. I would even go so far to call it a feature. There are all kinds of dents on my Mac Book Air's alumium body while my old Thinkpad looks as good as new. I am going to put a bumper on my S5 anyways, plastic or not makes no difference to me.
I must also say replaceable battery is a must-have for me. When my S2 was at the end of its 2 year contract, the original battery was only giving me 3 hours of life. The two "genuine" replacments I got from Amazon(!) have both swollen and giving between 5-8 hours of live. I cannot imagine how I would get through these two years without three batteries to rotate.
Also with Samsung TVs and blu-ray players, I am more or less locked into the ecosystem...

Yes, it is true. Polycarbonate is more durable and resilient than aluminum. Fact.
Drop a M8 and S5 straight on their back and let me know which one has more damage. Also, look on Swappa, eBay, Craigslist, etc and look at how almost every M7 being sold has damage. Dings in the aluminium, scratches, etc. Then search for S4's and tell me what you see.
In short, yes, the S5 has better build quality than the M8. If you want to talk about design or aesthetics, then that's a different story. But build quality isn't the same thing which is maybe where you are confused?

I see what you are saying. I guess I don't consider durability = build quality? Idk when I think of build quality I think of how well it feels and how solidly it is constructed.
But yes, if we are thinking of it as which is more durable, then yes definitely the S5 wins there. This is what is making me consider it even more. I constantly feel like I am going to drop my M8 and am nervous that it'll break.

So are you saying your one can be dropped from a second story onto concrete and still work? How about in the washing machine for an hour? Or in boiling water for like 5 mins. How about driven over by a car? Please... lets be real here.
Well I'm on the M8 switched from the S4. I am thinking of exchanging this for the s5 but I don't think any stores have one in black I hope they get some in stock before the 14 days run out. I do like the m8 it's VERY smooth but the real estate the buttons take away is huge to me. Also the m8 is pretty heavy and the aluminum will get abused pretty easily and I don't like cases. Who else is or was in my situation? I also want the better camera as I sell a lot on eBay.
I glanced at the M8, but never even considered it. I want a removeable battery, the fingerprint scanner. I don't need a metal phone, since mine will always go in a case.
I looked at the M8, played with it quite a bit, but that thing is ridiculously heavy, hate that huge bezel at the bottom, hate aluminium since it's so easy to scratch, no removable battery, no fingerprint scanner, not water/dust proof, horrible camera and Sense is a joke
Grabbed a Galaxy S5 instead. I love the fact that it's made of plastic. By no meas it feels cheep. It's a SOLID phone, very durable and still has a removable battery. Not to mention how light it is. I couldn't be happier. BTW, I had a GS4 before then.
The thing about both these phones, and the biggest argument I see is the camera. Just because the S5 has more megapixels doesn't mean anything. Take a picture in low lighting in example with both M8 and S5, see which does a better job, and which one takes a better picture in broad daylight. Each camera is made for specific strengths. The "bigger number, bigger performance" reason is downright the silliest thing ever imagined. For example, I smoke 5.0 mustangs and even 6.0 gtos with my roughly 1.8 liter RX8, all day any day. I agree, all of this is preference, and mine is, I'd stick with the M8. Touchwiz has too many gimmicks and useless things for me, Sense seems more streamlined, and straight to the point. Numbers don't always mean everything.

Did you read the OP? It's meant for OWNERS not somebody who owns an EVO and has never had either phone.
