I have had my Nexus 4 for a week now. It was sitting on the table this morning, and it managed to slip off, I cant remember what I set it on but when I was looking for it I couldn't find it. So I rang the phone and found it under the table.
There are 3 chips now on the screen. They are like little dots, they don't seem to be the same as scratches as they are deeper on the screen. Is there anyway I can smooth them out. They are almost like small grains of sand stuck on the phones screen. Very annoying.
Sorry to hear that happened. Looks like if it is dropped on a hard surface it is hit or miss.

The exact same thing happened to me. The phone is super slippery on some surfaces. I put it on a desk and after a few minutes I heard the phone hitting the floor. Screen totally cracked and not responding.
I did catch the phone almost slipping off the a coffee table before but I never expected it to do it from my desk because it looked like it was resting on its surface firmly.
Buyers be careful. Make sure you use a case.

Yeah sorry for your loss, but I don't define dropping a phone from 3-4ft onto a hard surface as " easy to break". Basically any phone in that situation has a chance of breaking.

how are your phones just slipping off tables? are your tables slanted/ or is the table sloped. Get a level and check, phones just don't slide off level surfaces.

That's the point, it didn't look like it was slippery in the desk when I out it there...but I guess it was it slippers right of the desk. I'm not going to level every desk I'm going to put this phone on. Sadly it was so new that no cases were shipping yet otherwise it would be in a case day one.
This is just to advise other users to pay good attention or use a case.
This is coming from a person who never ever dropped or broke a phone before. The N4 is almost a floating phone on some surfaces.

I'll take that to mean you've never used a phone with a resistive screen. The screens on my old WM HTC phones used to scratch easily but on my Desire Z, the screen looks like brand new even though the phone is 2 years old and never had a screen protector on.
Hope the N4 stays this way.

This video helped me with the protector. Posted it and have had it about a week. It's kinda similar to another glad protector out there. I love it. The clarity is amazing and the finger flow on the glass is great. U do have to wipe the smudges off after a bit but no biggie. The function of the S pen is great. It was a concern for me but as soon as I got it on the S pen was the first thing I tried and no problems.
I've gone through a couple other protectors because I use the S pen a lot and hated the marks left on the screens so paying the $30 didn't concern me. The only thing I have issue with us that at the edges it looks like it's not fully connected but it is. Don't really notice it unless I focus on it but all in all a great protector for someone like me that was looking for something that was sturdy and didn't leave marked when u use the pen.

Did you buy an add-on home button? Did the screen protector make it harder to press the home button since it is much thicker. Is there very much Loss of touch sensitivity?

No I didn't buy the home button. It's a bit recessed but it's not bad and I don't have any problems with turning on the phone. So fast no loss in touch sensitivity, I love this protector. I wanted a protector like this for a long time and now that it is I'm happy. A lot of smudges but a quick wipe and clear as anything.
I ordered another one for my wife and it seems the order is delayed. I haven't heard anything from the company but my last order took 4 days to get to me.

The purple protector is actually a static cleaner. You use it after using the cleaner to take off any lint or scrap that might be on the screen just before adding the glass screen so its clean and no items. My second one is taking a bit longer to get but received en email from Mime today letting me know that it has been shipped and should arrive shortly. My wife will soon enjoy the protector.

Thats what i'm thinking of, if this is true, then this one I have is telling the truth, at least is stated korean design and made in china, whiles the mime say it's made in the USA.
I actually ordered a spare one and received it, when I posted this in another thread, and during the installation there was a bubble that will not go away, even when I removed this protector a few time, I though it was a uneven glass, and suddenly it turned into a like a oily patch like rainbow effect, and thought it was just my sample, well just last week, it gone away, so now I have a spare one.
Don't get me wrong my spare one is not for sale, so please don't PM me.
I'm really happy with this and at a price i paid, can't really fault it, and a highly recommended product, whether it's my chinese version or the mime branded version.

read my post 15.
I was wondering about this one and its s-pen responsiveness.
I'm a little sick right now. On accident I slid my phone on its screen on a very smooth table and I now have scratches everywhere. All on the corners and a ton on the bottom by the touch buttons. At least the good thing is you can't see it unless in the light. But its pretty obvious. And of course I have slight OCD so this is bothering the **** out of me lol. They almost look like big scuffs all over.
Edit**: I just wanted to update you guys and say that now that I've gotten used to it its not so bad. Yes it still bothers me a lot but the good thing is you can't see them unless under a light or outside. So on usual use you can't see them.
Also to all the idiots who think I'm stupid or something. 1. Yes I do know gorilla glass scratches easier 2. Do you idiots really think I just slide my phones around on their screens on purpose or something?? Its called an accident 3. Stop jumping to conclusion saying how stupid this thread is, it was mainly for the people just getting their nexus 4s and telling them to be careful with the screen so they dont make my mistakes.

Most if not ALL surfaces have some form of dust/sand particles on it. Sand scratches glass no matter how "tough" it claims to be!
/end of thread
Gorilla glass 2 just means it's a thinner protective layer compared to the last generation, not twice (2) as thick nor protective.
Sorry to hear bud. At least you didn't claim they came from "nowhere" like half the other threads like this one. Props to you sir.

Just a side note, apparently Sand is tough enough to grind down granite. This is because of small but tough grain in sand (sand has several components to it).

I'm pretty sure that most of the ppl here knows that Gorilla Glass, no matter what version, isn't scratch proof.
That isn't really a negative for the N4. You basically let your phone's screen nakedly rub against a surface (very smooth or not). Do it with any phone and you'll probably get the same results.

i learned that lesson with my scratched (gorilla glass) asus transformer.
on my n4 now i have a screen protector on the front and a slim hard shell on the back, with a slight lip that keeps the front screen above surfaces if placed on its front. I've also drilled a couple of mounting holes in the case for a wrist strap.
belt + braces!
delete.
Flat glass against flat glass is a formula for disaster. With no air between the two surfaces, the smallest imperfections like dust will scratch the hell out of your screen.
I have this on my galaxy s3 and my galaxy nexus, when I sell it on eBay I'll be letting people know about it but I feel they won't understand just how small the scratches are.
For my nexus 4 I've already got a screen protector and a back skin because of this same problem.

Sorry to hear this. I too am pretty OCD about my devices. I love the look and feel of my N4 without cases and screen protectors, so this is of course a nightmare for most of us. I'm just glad to read that you're not one of the many users who thinks that just because someone puts the word "Gorilla" in front of another word must automatically mean its the most durable thing on the planet. I dare some of those people to go kick a set of gorilla balls and see how durable they are.

Ignore the critics mate.
I did this early on with my s2 and was gutted. Seems the glass in whatever form has a long way to go before it can resist sand and general grit.
I hate cases, bumpers, screen protectors, skins blah blah but when I get a new device always buy loads.. Sad thing is novelty wears off and in 3 months it'll have none of the above on it and I'll have fallen into my bad ways of keeping it in a pocket with change or keys etc!
Moral of the story - what seems bad now you'll get used to and start to ignore! Doesn't make it a huge bummer tho.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Sand is powerful!! Lol.. Anyway thanks for reminding us though..
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Will never understand why people don't use screen protectors and cases for their phones.
There have been so many posts about broken glass and mysterious breakage, etc. Because of this I feel it's only fair to have a thread where people can post close calls where the glass did not break.
Last night my phone feel off the top of a beauro onto cement! Was in my basement. When I heard it land I did not even want to pick it up because I was sure it was gone. I had just taken the case off to clean it after getting some dirty fingerprints on it. I had a flash back of reading all those broken glass threads.
I picked it up and I could not believe it! There is just a very small scratch that can barely be seen on the chrome bezel. The phone was laying on its face when I picked it up and was covered with dirt and sand. I was careful not to slide it at all and instead of wiping it I went into my garage and blew it off with the air compressor. I then cleaned it as I usually do with a lightly damp cloth, the ones you get for cleaning eye glasses.
I literally spent 15 minutes going over the glass and the entire phone under a bright light to look for damage and there is not a single scratch on the glass.
I am usually very careful but there have been a couple times I have had the phone in my pocket with keys and one time a metal flashlight even and still not even a small scratch on the glass.
I have had other phones and have had an iPod touch, other tablets without gorilla glass and all of them had very minor surface scratches that could be seen under light. This glass is durable and pretty awesome at stopping scratches.
I think one simple way any phone can be scratched though is either when cleaning or even using the phone with dirty hands. All it takes is some very small sand particles on your finger or on your even when you clean it. Make sire your hand are always clean and the screen too and you should have no problem with scratches. As for breakage, I have had 3 drops so far, 2 of them fairly bad drops so I guess it just depends on how it lands but overall I have found this phone very durable despite being made of glass.
Anyone else want to share?

Yeah I saw that video a couple weeks ago and thought the same thing. For it to basically be an all glass phone it held up well. That was the main reason I decided to just use a bumper instead of a back covering case. I figured if it can hold up to the back and side drop like that, a bumper should be fine for me (I'm not rough on my devices).
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The front panel is mostly glass but the back is made out of plastic and covered in glass. What is amazing is if you take the phone apart you can see just how thin the rear glass is. Crazy thin!

I had kept my phone for charging on a table(unfortunately close to the edge ) about 1m in height . 3 missed calls later it was on the floor(tiled floor) and I heard the sound when it fell down. It was on its back with the front facing up and I thought it had cracked for sure. Turned it around to see no damage at all no dents on the chrome too . all I had on the phone was the glass protector for the back that comes with the phone.

Dropped mine from about five feet onto marble. There is a 1/4" dent in the chrome bezel. Front and back glass still look new!

i dropped mine down the stairs and onto a concrete floor and mine didn't break
It makes me want to cry... I went straight to the Zagg store and had it done up front and back, I was waiting 24 hours to put the bumper on to allow the screen protector to dry. What are the chances? :crying:

I still think zagg makes a nice compliment to a bumper, but i wouldnt go bumperless again, i will just wait patiently for the zagg to dry next time before using the phone
A screen protector is not meant to keep the screen from cracking...
Don't blame Zagg

If it makes you feel any better, I dropped my black naked phone 3 feet last night on my patio while drunk and there's not a scratch on it.
Sorry about your luck. I nearly cried when I realized I dropped it. And again when I found out it was pristine! (tiny scuff in the bezel but I won't cry about it)

Damn that sucks! I've been keeping my phone with no case or screen protector and doing well so far.

LOL! I don't think that's going to make him feel any better that your phone survived and his didn't! =)

Frankly speaking, you guys can't handle it. I am using my Nexus 4 since the ever first shipment with NO CASE, SCREEN PROTECTOR or anything. I am a pretty normal user and the phone has never fallen from my hand. I wonder whether you guys are just too reckless in the first place.
I had a case on mine first few months I had it but found it bothersome and annoying. It is now going no screen protector or case (as it has been for 5 months) and it is still pristine! Not even micro scratches that you have to hold the phone under the sun to see.
But that would definitely be very... Emotion wrecking.
Should have went with a dry apply protector from SGP.

I baby my black nexus 4, got an oem bumper on it but nothing else. Use to use screen protectors but they just peel, bubble or smudge to much. I am thinking about trying it naked, but sods law will probably come in to play and I will be without a phone then.
I have had my GS3 without a case OR screen protector for 9 months without a single incident. I decide im going to take better care of this phone and then this happens. currently using gs3 again until i receive the repair kit. this is costing me $140 to fix. On the other hand its still cheaper than i paid for my gs3.
I see there are a couple different videos on youtube for replacing the screen. Has anyone had any experience with replacing screens? if so, which tutorial/video did you find most helpful?
edit: the phone being black on the front is a blessing in disguise when you go to order replacement parts the week the phone launches lol
Ouch, I feel for you, pictures like this make me realise I should buy a case :/

I cracked my naked N4 I received just before christmas after about 4 months exactly like the OP and I nearly cried. Fortunately got a replacement through my insurance and got a poetic bumper for it. No more risks as I dont think I can handle that trauma again!

Be careful my friend. In my experience you now have the attention of all the bad spirits out there.
I don't hope so, but I wouldn't wonder if your phone falls down and cracks in the next few days. Waiting for the update....
I never bother with wet application skins exactly because I don't want to wait for 24 hours to use my phone while the dry ones can provide the same, if not better, protection.

The only reason i go with Zagg is the warranty. As soon as my replacement parts arrive next week im going to fix my phone and then ill peel the zagg off the shattered glass and have them reapply a new one. Its within 14 days so technically they shouldnt even charge me the installation fee again lol.
Do your self a favor homez!!! Ballistic case and Dbrand skin your glass you'll be glad u did I had my N4 for 2 weeks b4 I even switched to a micro sim just waiting for a case and skin and even then I'm still very careful to not have change in my pocket or drive with it in my lap or nothing No chances with this Black Beauty!

I hate ZAGG now, I went through 20 of those between the 3 different phones I have had... They have rainbow scratches to easy lol
Just got xtremeguard and it is working awesome but the back piece came off when I took off my case.

Today I got my Nexus back from the RMA Department guys from Asus.
After a series of e-mails to and fro, my patience has been tested and I have no clue what to do.
The only issue I had was a screen that cracked itself. I was watching Game of Thrones happily on HBOGo when the screen just shattered. This problem is a known issue and I found some people over at AndroidCentral that got their RMA honored with the very same issue, I cannot get in contact with them though.
If you have had issues with your Nexus7 screen before you know that the screen and digitizer are an all-in-one assembly making perfectly certain that any sizable crack will disable the touchscreen, making it a regular old LCD...
SO... I have 2 options.
1. Use the information I hopefully gain from the people that (again, hopefully) post in thread.
2. USB OTG Wireless Mouse.
What would you do?
Thanks so much in advanced,
Nacho!
Replace the screen yourself. I'm in the process of waiting for my new screen to come in today so I can fix my N7.

And, as a reminder to all tablet owners, a Square Trade drop and spill warranty is the only way to really have piece of mind.
Apparently these spontaneous screen cracks aren't uncommon on iPads either....
Happened to a friend of mine. Asus warranty is awful.

Well they aren't full warranties. 99% of screen cracks are from physical damage to the unit. They are hard to prove otherwise and so they just don't do it. I'm actually surprised I've heard a few of them replaced from Asus.
But replacing the screen is a long and tired process, so I've heard. They are also expensive. I also find it hard to believe that the screen just exploded during a movie. Regardless, whatever happened, the screen is busted. With the new N7 due out within weeks, I don't know if I would even drop the cash buying or repairing the old one.
You might try to buy a Square Trade warranty on it, wait a month, and call it in. That falls under some bad karma, but I guess in the long run it doesn't matter whether you purchase it day 1 and break it 2 years later, or purchase it day 100 and replace it 30 days later.
I would just be careful with it and use it as long as you can until the new N7 comes out... then sell the broken unit for parts. Too bad the N7 doesn't have HDMI out or you could just repurpose it into a dedicated Android TV device.
I would personally buy and replace the screen myself. I would also probably make a point of boycotting Asus if they gave me trouble, fortunately, I have not had to test my warranty or their services.

Since when did warranties start covering physical damage?

Gotta play devil's advocate here... should a warranty cover a broken screen if someone pots their N7 in their back pocket and accidentally sits on it?

Only the extra cost extended ones like Square Trade.
Anything else is a 'good will' and entirely at the discretion of the company.

Square Trade isn't just a 'warranty' it's also theft and accident protection.
Don't bother replacing the screen. Mine cracked with a very minimal impact..... Putting it onto a table. The screen themselves cost almost as much as a new 16gb unit and breaks as easily as a wet piece of tissue.
Get a new tablet that are more durable, I.e. Samsung tablets and drop test videos prove it.
I opted for an iPad Mini instead as I prefer a app orientated tablet.
Its a known issue that screens can shatter watching game of thrones on the n7???
Wow! Thanks for the heads up!!

That is exactly why I bought mine at Walmart and got the extended warranty, and my 2 year old constantly plays with my tablet so I thought it would be 30 bucks well spent Lol and I still have not used the warranty

My screen spontaneously cracked a while ago. Called Asus and told them I had minor screen lift (which I did) and it then all the sudden cracked. The repaired under warranty for free.

They don't usually cover broken glass and just like me I'm sure they are not buying that it broke so by itself. Sucks but electronics are fragile.

That is crap...
I dropped my nexus 7 of the roof of my car onto tar and I did not break.. it dropped many times actually seeing as 2 kids are always using it. It is very durable and fast and spending hundreds more for a worse tablet is not the answer for sure.
I have had 2 of them and neither of them had any screen issues. They are very durable bit glass is glass. I do not believe any of these break all by themselves. If it did ever happen I bet it would be 1 in a million devices.

The screen lift is a valid issue, and could contribute to screen breakage. That would be justification for covering under warranty.

All depends on how you "drop it". I guess i got a unit with manufacturing defects, probably only a limited number of units are affected.
Did you have the speaker buzzing issue as well or.........?
