Asus won't honor my warranty-- What do? - Nexus 7 General

Today I got my Nexus back from the RMA Department guys from Asus.
After a series of e-mails to and fro, my patience has been tested and I have no clue what to do.
The only issue I had was a screen that cracked itself. I was watching Game of Thrones happily on HBOGo when the screen just shattered. This problem is a known issue and I found some people over at AndroidCentral that got their RMA honored with the very same issue, I cannot get in contact with them though.
If you have had issues with your Nexus7 screen before you know that the screen and digitizer are an all-in-one assembly making perfectly certain that any sizable crack will disable the touchscreen, making it a regular old LCD...
SO... I have 2 options.
1. Use the information I hopefully gain from the people that (again, hopefully) post in thread.
2. USB OTG Wireless Mouse.
What would you do?
Thanks so much in advanced,
Nacho!

Replace the screen yourself. I'm in the process of waiting for my new screen to come in today so I can fix my N7.

And, as a reminder to all tablet owners, a Square Trade drop and spill warranty is the only way to really have piece of mind.
Apparently these spontaneous screen cracks aren't uncommon on iPads either....

Happened to a friend of mine. Asus warranty is awful.
Sent from my SPH-M830 using xda app-developers app

Well they aren't full warranties. 99% of screen cracks are from physical damage to the unit. They are hard to prove otherwise and so they just don't do it. I'm actually surprised I've heard a few of them replaced from Asus.
But replacing the screen is a long and tired process, so I've heard. They are also expensive. I also find it hard to believe that the screen just exploded during a movie. Regardless, whatever happened, the screen is busted. With the new N7 due out within weeks, I don't know if I would even drop the cash buying or repairing the old one.
You might try to buy a Square Trade warranty on it, wait a month, and call it in. That falls under some bad karma, but I guess in the long run it doesn't matter whether you purchase it day 1 and break it 2 years later, or purchase it day 100 and replace it 30 days later.
I would just be careful with it and use it as long as you can until the new N7 comes out... then sell the broken unit for parts. Too bad the N7 doesn't have HDMI out or you could just repurpose it into a dedicated Android TV device.

I would personally buy and replace the screen myself. I would also probably make a point of boycotting Asus if they gave me trouble, fortunately, I have not had to test my warranty or their services.

Since when did warranties start covering physical damage?

Gotta play devil's advocate here... should a warranty cover a broken screen if someone pots their N7 in their back pocket and accidentally sits on it?

Only the extra cost extended ones like Square Trade.
Anything else is a 'good will' and entirely at the discretion of the company.

Square Trade isn't just a 'warranty' it's also theft and accident protection.

Don't bother replacing the screen. Mine cracked with a very minimal impact..... Putting it onto a table. The screen themselves cost almost as much as a new 16gb unit and breaks as easily as a wet piece of tissue.
Get a new tablet that are more durable, I.e. Samsung tablets and drop test videos prove it.
I opted for an iPad Mini instead as I prefer a app orientated tablet.

Its a known issue that screens can shatter watching game of thrones on the n7???

That is exactly why I bought mine at Walmart and got the extended warranty, and my 2 year old constantly plays with my tablet so I thought it would be 30 bucks well spent Lol and I still have not used the warranty

My screen spontaneously cracked a while ago. Called Asus and told them I had minor screen lift (which I did) and it then all the sudden cracked. The repaired under warranty for free.

They don't usually cover broken glass and just like me I'm sure they are not buying that it broke so by itself. Sucks but electronics are fragile.

I dropped my nexus 7 of the roof of my car onto tar and I did not break.. it dropped many times actually seeing as 2 kids are always using it. It is very durable and fast and spending hundreds more for a worse tablet is not the answer for sure.
I have had 2 of them and neither of them had any screen issues. They are very durable bit glass is glass. I do not believe any of these break all by themselves. If it did ever happen I bet it would be 1 in a million devices.

The screen lift is a valid issue, and could contribute to screen breakage. That would be justification for covering under warranty.

cracked screen :( what do I do ?

I'm beyond upset......I knocked my tablet and the screen cracked and is now unusable. What is the best thing to do? ideally i'd buy a replacement screen and fit myself, but as it's a new device I guess replacement screens are either non existent or only available from asus themselves. I'm thinking it may be an insurance job but as my excess to pay is £100 i'd like to explore alternatives if available. Any advice appreciated.
did you buy it from google play or a 3rd party store?
I own a mobile device repair company and a product as new as the 7 you need to pay the insurance or have Asus fix it. The cost of the parts right now are expensive/not available yet.

It's not Gorilla Glass so it'd be interesting to know what it took to destroy the screen.
I believe i knocked it when getting into my car so technically i bent it rather than dropped it

That'll do it every time, even if it had been Gorilla glass it would have gone, flexing is probably the number one breaker of large screens.
Could you claim on your household insurance? I know that some policies include damage to items outside the house.

Dude... Gorilla Glass is still glass.
It's engineered to be scratch resistant, not shatter proof.
If it makes impact with something sharp/pointed or if it makes contact in just the right spot, it will shatter. It's just physics.
If the shock can't disperse evenly or if it's absorbed entirely by the screen, it will shatter. That's what bumpers are for.
Either way, you dropped it. That's not Google's fault. They didn't sell you a defective device, they sold a device to a clumsy person.

LG said:
This is the way the warranty service works here: The warranty that we offer is valid for 12 months with the copy of the receipt and it covers only manufacturing defects, no liquid, physical or cosmetic damages, otherwise charges may apply for the repair on the unit. The process takes 5-7 business days, and the only cost that you need to cover would be shipping and handling by sending the defective unit to us and we cover the shipping back with Fedex.
michelle: If the phone is out of warranty, you can still send it in to us, we can evaluate it and check if it is repairable or not. If there’s a repair cost, we will inform you how much it is and then you decide if you want to pay or not for the repair on the unit.

My main question is . how much more protection does a cover gives is there a drop test ?
Second question. Dude don't you have a home insurance or anything like that ?if it broke at home you are covered . check your bank account if you're paying for it you might have an insurance on it.
And this is what I'm going to do. Get an insurance for my phone and won't even use a cover or bumper .if it breaks I'll get a new one

Only because the phone is 300 dollars will I be buying one. Going to buy 3 and get one squaretrade warranty so whichever one breaks first can use it.

That sucks, my friend's Nexus 4 cracked a few days too, lower left side of the screen is unusable. If you want to do a DIY repair, the Screen+Digitized+Frame can be found on eBay (shipped from California). Unfortunately, it's pricey ($200+). I think LG is going to charge around $160ish for a repair. Let us know what they quote you.

LCD cracked under glass in my pocket.

So I pulled out my phone at work, turned it on and 3/4 of my screen was black, there was a tiny crack on the very edge under the glass. I have a hard case and screen protector. Took it to Sprint and asked how it was possible, they said pressure cracks with these are common, but since it is physically damaged I'd have to pay $150 thru Asurion, fantastic. So be very very careful with these because apparently ANY small amount of pressure on these will crack the LCD, even with no other physical damage to the phone.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda premium

If this is true that its common then make sure you find a complaint and talk to the highest supervisor at sprint to get this reversed if its later found to be a known defect. Worked in the past.

I really hate to see this post in the Sprint section. Was hoping that maybe this issue was a problem with the manufacturing line that is producing the GSM varients. This does seem to be a fairly widespread problem for the S4 and it indeed has to be a defect. There is no way that this should be happening on such a wide scale just by having the phone in a pocket....even if it is skin tight. The international S4 thread as well as the AT&T and T-Mobile threads are littered with this same issue as the OP here stated .It really makes me nervous and I hate having to be extra careful with this phone.

Yeah, it has to be a manufacturing defect. I asked 3 different corporate stores how the hell the lcd under the glass cracks without any other damage to the phone, or without dropping, hitting it, etc. They said they don't know, of course. After I ordered my replacement, I tried barely flexing the phone without my case as is if it might in your pocket, and sure enough it cracked underneath in 3 more places
I'm going to call Samsung on Monday, and very nicely request my money back for my insurance deductible due to it being an obvious widespread defect. I shouldn't have to pay $150 for a refurb when it's a little over a month old with absolutely no abuse

What brand/model case do you have? Now, I'm spooked. I've never cracked a screen. I've had Windows PC phones: the 6600, Mogul, original Touch, Touch Pro, Touch Pro 2, and Treo 700wx. Then Android phones: Hero, OG Evo, and Evo 3D. I've always had them in cases. The Windows phones had pouch cases. The Treo had a silicone case. The Evos both had the Best Buy Platinum cases which are Seidios. Most of them I used without screen protectors. Never a broken or cracked screen.
My S4 has a Casemate case on it. It's a 2 layer case: silicone with polycarbonate shell. I also have a 3M anti-glare screen protector on it. I wonder if this is enough? I often put my S4 in my jeans pocket, though sometimes I put it case and all into a sort of pouch in my purse if I don't have a pocket in my slacks or skirt.
Those of you that have had S IIIs and Note IIs, were there any defects with those screens? Thanks.
I've never had a phone do this and I've had pretty much every generation of touch screen device starting from the mogul, and I've NEVER had this happen. Sure I've shattered the glass on a few, but that was from severe drops. I have a clear plastic/rubber case and HD screen protector. The only activity I was doing was squatting up and down cutting appliance boxes open. I didn't hit against anything. The AMOLED should not break beneath the glass, even if the phone were to be flexed from being in your pocket.

I'm glad I ran across this thread good info
I love the 90s good times
I honestly don't think the screens are breaking from just sitting nicely in pockets and purses. Over flexing in pockets makes sense. Its a big long wide thin phone. But its not just breaking for no reason. Just not buying it sorry.
This was discussed before about edge to edge displays on big phones. Maybe some sort of cushions can be used to reduce this effect if its is truly the cause.
A corporate repair store is suppose to replace the screen. In my experience I've seen some corp repair stores are just bad and say no we can't but then I've called sprint and gotten supervisors on the phone and handed the phone to a store manager and all of a sudden the story changes and its then repaired.
Side note... I do not see a fisheye effect on my screen or girlfriends Verizon phone. Maybe the ones that do have a issue and are prone to breaking easier? Idk.
Sent from my SGS4. Go Blue!! Buck the Fuc keyes!!
I've owned 8+ large screen touch phones, that have been dropped, bumped, flexed, etc WITHOUT a case that haven't broken. Now this one in a case, never dropped, never hit, or bumped, suddenly the lcd cracks under the glass? Yeah, call me crazy, but that shouldn't happen. Especially on a flagship $650 device.
And to further explain the damage the crack was vertical about a half inch, right along the power button under the white frame. There is no physical damage, no dings, scratches, NOTHING to the phone.

Simple physics guys..
Glass will shatter if it hits the ground hard. Don´t forget you don´t own a simple phone anymore like a Nokia 3310 Your smartphones are actually very sensitive mini computers.
Gorilla Glass may prevent the glass from becoming scratched very easy, it will never prevent it from breaking though.
This is hard to read. I have an S2 that's I've dropped many times from hip level, no case, and the screen has yet to crack.
I definitely bought a case for this one because no matter how careful I am I can't keep my phone from dropping.

samsung continues to pay good, huh op? "screen being easily damaged" sounds very legit; when i broke my phone screen the first idea is write "easily damaged" (note the "easily", lol) on one of the most famous developers forum where i registered with 0 post. Yeah, good try.

My point was that the S2 has a gorilla glass and it took many falls without cracking. T barely has any scratches after 2 years too.

Now random cracking is an issue, but even 2 inch toughened (laminated) glass will break if it hits the ground along its edges/corners because the stress distribution is concentrated there.

That's just silly.... No offence but sometimes it just hits the floor at the wrong angle. Iv seen iPhone break with the same sorta fall

I obviously agree with your first statement but why do people always have to bring up the iPhone to compare things to. How about an HTC One, or a Samsung Galaxy S4 or an LG G2? People think if an iPhone does something then we can just accept it. I would expect an iPhone to break. It is built by underage kids and is known to get damaged easily regardless of what Apple tells us.

Budddy, Gorilla Glass doesn't make your phone shatter-proof, it's just protecting your phone against scratches.
Sorry to hear that dude.

The only reason I brought up the iPhone is due to the "popular opinion" that it has the best build quality.. Not that it's my opinion though

I find it really disrespectful when people talk down on people that drop their phones and say they should be more careful.
The reality is we are all human! human's make mistakes! Some make less than others, but we all make mistakes. If you have never tripped, said the wrong thing, accidentally dropped something, well then congratulations you are a perfect person! But no need to put down others.

cracked screen

that was fast
24 hours, slipped out my hand when bent to tie my show, 2 feet off the ground it landed flat on the ground. Shattered.
I want to blame myself but this wasn't an epic slip, I guess there's a magic spot you dont want to hit if this thing falls but if its that easy I think alot of people are going to be doing the same.
Maybe someone at support is having a good day, doubtful. I can;t buy another one tho if it breaks so easily. I've never actually cracked a screen before.
it looks like a tall iphone now

I'll just stop you there. It's a smartphone. Without a case, if dropped, it will break. Period. I'm sorry for your situation but this is why cases are so widely used.

i have dropped my GS3 face down while riding a bicycle and it's fine. Then probably 20 times in a similar instance to just now all i have on that are some some scraches.
Trying to get in touch with LG see what they charge for screen replacement, a post on the LG G2 forum says $105 plys shipping.

If that's accurate that isn't too bad! I know when I cracked my Galaxy Nexus screen last year I just called Google and they sent me a new phone, charged me the full price of the phone, then when I returned my broken one they refunded all but $100. It was a damn good deal in my opinion. You might want to give that a try instead of dealing with LG.
No one to blame but yourself. That sucks though.

Ive only dropped one phone in my life time, htc one x, and the first fall equaled shattered screen =(
I have done the same to gs3, nexus 4, HTC one (yes I am clumsy) they are all as brittle as each other. I just make sure I have insurance!

Ouch. I cracked my Nexus 4 screen 3 times. Sent it o LG every time lol. The last time I sent it, they actually just fixed it for me for free, which was really nice of them.
Anyways, if it really no a $105, this isn't bad. It was around $150 to fix the N4 each time I cracked. The digitizer was literally right on the glass in the Nexus 4, so even the smallest chip could render the entire screen unusable. As was what happened to me.
Nexus 5 has Gorilla Glass 3. I really hope that makes a difference.

Gorilla glass prevents scratching, not cracking.

I usually run totally naked. I love the feel it. With anything on it just seems as if it is not necessary.
On that note, i have never dropped my phone.

I got google Nexus support on the phone and went the "come on do me a solid bro" route. The guy at google put me on the phone so I guess he asked someone, but he said he couldn't do anything. I'm on with LG now to find out the price. Maybe try google later and will get lucky.
LG says $40 - $100 depending on extent of damage. LG tech said the digitizer is attached to the screen and very hard to separate. But total turnaround time is 5-7 business days, from time they receive the phone, evaluate repair charges, confirm cost with me and do the work. That's impressive. I could probs sell the thing broken to some of the impatient fanboy nut jobs out there.
Had the nexus 4 for almost a year and dropped it a dozen times from various heights (even shoulder height, and 6' tall) and not crack. Then two weeks ago it fell off my chair about one foot and cracked the bottom of my screen and rendered part of it unresponsive. So it just depends on how it falls. It could fall a hundred times or just once.

picture?
Oof, that's too bad! I'm trying very hard to baby mine so far, will be ordering a tempered glass screen protector and a case some time this week. I think the glass screen protector will be enough to prevent a cracked actual screen, so the case is just for situations where I'd want some extra protection (say, hiking, or going to a state fair, etc.). I used a tempered glass screen protector on my Galaxy Nexus for a long time, and it saved my actual screen twice (screen protector cracks, real screen underneath was fine). Best $30 I will ever spend on phone accessories.
Pic or it didn't happen.
I shattered the screen of an iPhone 4S that I dropped down a flight of stairs (on accident?) and ran over an EVO 4G with my car when it slipped out of my pocket getting in. In both incidents neither phone was in a case, and in both I absolutely was to blame. You stay calm and carry on, as the kids say.

You can tell his screen is cracked because his shift key doesn't work anymore.
The plastic they used on Nexus 5 is very very soft. I mean the bezel cannot provide any protection to the screen when it falls on the sides.
