[Q] Stop Update - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to stop the new update that is rolling out on the Note 3? Will it auto update? I am having trouble finding this information and I would really hate for it to update my things with all the modifications I have.

Since you're modified, freeze the app "at&t software update". Then it won't update no more. Unfreeze it when you want to update.

i tried the way you have talked but it`s still update the things automatically.

I used an app called "root uninstaller" and had it disable the updates. I haven't been hit with any updates since.

So what does one do when there is no such app (at&t software update") in my app drawer? Why can't I find it?
My phone is modified, but I have not purchased Titanium Pro, how do I "freeze" an app?

If "att software update" isn't under the "all" tab, then you deleted it. You can't get it back unless you did a backup. In order to receive any updates now you can try with kies, or find the thread titled "restore to MJ5" and update from there.
In order to "freeze" an app you have to use an app manager. Like titanium pro, or do some searching for a different one.

Well, you didn't say anything about purchasing an "an app manager" like titanium pro, you said "if your phone is modified", and mine is.
I found it. It was NOT in alphabetical order with all the other at&t apps. "force Stop" and "turn off" are greyed out, as is the checkmark in show notifications

What kind of modifications have you done? Gaining root access isn't really a modification. Your just gaining access to what you didn't have previously so you can modify. The "turn off" feature for at&t software update app is greyed out because it's a system app. No one said you had to purchase anything. There's free app managers out there. Did you even try to search for one yourself? Titanium backup pro is highly praised in this community. Pay for it, or search for an alternative. It's will worth it. I've used it for 5+ yrs. It probably paid for itself in the first year.

Listen up bro, if you want to help, don't be so vague please. "modified phone" . (the moment one changes the font size the phone is "modified")
Your first post said nothing, just wild vagueness. (you could have easily said "you need to have an app manager that can freeze apps, like titanium pro")
And just cause I couldn't "guess" the exact modification you speak of doesn't mean I'm stupid or lazy.
-
An if a person can't find an app, don't tell them it's cause "you deleted it", (I don't delete anything, per suggestion of the majority)
-
Also, I find it offensive that you have the gall to ask me, "Did you even try to search for one yourself?" You're asking ME that?
I appreciate your help in the past, but that does not entitle you to treat me like a turd now.
I'm NOT a flippin' idiot, and I don't appreciate you treating me like one !!!!
ps, thanks for your help jerry, appreciate it. :good:

I was wondering if there was an app that could update all your apps and install the updates automatically without having to go through them one by one. That gets really annoying.

The best I know of so far is aTrackDog. And it's really not so great. You have to manually check for updates and install them each individually.
I would love to hear anybody else's suggestions. This really does get annoying.

i read something that when the dev test a new app but is not ready to be released. it still shows up as an update. just look at it as it will soon come out. at least you know the dev is updating apps
what atrackdog does is take info from everyone who uses atrackdog. so if you see an update that isnt out yet, that means that the dev(s) of the program use atrackdog and its picking up the unreleased version they're working on. atrackdog is one of the best apps for ANY android phone.

Ok..the thing is that this thread is asking for an app that will automatically update all the apps so that you don't have to do it manually.
So I guess I am asking for an automatic app updater and installer...if that makes sense.

For the purpose of this thread, it doesn't meet what he's requesting. I'm not saying as an app it isn't good. I used to use it all the time. For what it does, it does it great. But for what he wants, it doesn't.
Ok, let me rephrase my previous statement.
The app you're looking for does not exist.
Ok then ^^
Would it be possible to make an app like that?
Bump. Please someone tell me if it's doable!

Removing Internet Browsers

Hello,
First off let me say I'm not great at rooting my phone. When I had a Samsung Infuse I did it on accident pretty much and now that I have an Atrix, I'm no good at all. I'd like to be able to remove my internet browsers, the default one and Chrome, and I'd like to remove the Google Play store too. Basically, I just want my phone to have my email, 2 or 3 other apps I use, and that's it. Last time I removed my browser on the Samsung Infuse, I lost my data connection. Does any one know an easy, safe way to remove both browsers and Google Play? I'd almost be willing to pay for this if it's possible.
Thanks!

Why would you want to remove the play store? and only have 2 or 3 apps on a phone like this? why not get a dumb phone? If you really want to though you can root your phone then use titanium backup to remove the apps.

Kind of a personal thing, with the main thing being I love the phone, but don't like wasting time with the internet. And if I have access to the internet, I'd be stuck on it all day. Thus, I'd like to remove the play store to block access to doing that. Just using the apps I normally already use and keep those and remove the rest.
I've tried rooting Super One click but that doesn't seem to work. What is the best/easiest/fastest way to root my phone?

super one click dosen't work on this phone. If you go to the adroid development section of the atrix hd there are 2 root methods. An easy one if your on ICS a hard but still possible one if your on JB.

Basically what you need to do is flash the stock ICS image (4.0.4), root it, then install an app called "Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper" (on Play as "OTA RootKeeper" by Supercurio). Then you "temp unroot" via Voodoo and apply the 4.1.1 update. After you install the update you install Voodoo OTA Rooteeper again, and voila, you can restore your rooted phone.
There are posts in the thread I linked where people ask "can you flash 4.0.4 over 4.1.1" and have been answered "yes," but I didn't have to do it personally.
One of the steps is to update superuser and then update the superuser binary. There are 2 ways to do this, one through the app store & with the superuser program, and the other to "replace the apk in /system/app with the one in /data/app." I struggled with this step. I could update Superuser via the app store, Superuser would detect that its binary was out of date and then try to download the new version, but the installation would always fail. I ended up copying Superuser.apk and "su" from the Superuser website and copying them to the phone using ADB. Since you've said you suck at rooting, this might be too much for you. I don't now how necessary it is, maybe others can comment.
Good luck! Although I'm somewhat in agreement with other sentiments regarding your post ... a dumb phone & a dumb iPod would solve your Internet-distraction problems for a lot less hassle... plus put a decent wad of cash back in your pocket.

Well, I've thought about that, but I really like several apps that I don't want to lose, such as Google Maps/Navigation, Google Music, Sermon Audio, Google Drive, and Bank of America among the main ones. Thus, I'd rather keep the phone with data and rid myself of these 2 other distractions and nuisances.

Yea, like I said, I didn't try it myself I was relaying the experience of other posters. I found the thread where they said they did it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33326640&postcount=78 ... I also see that you posted that you tried and couldn't.
Anyway my first answer was dumb and I don't mean to argue. There's a JB tutorial right here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2143437 .

Alright, this thing is ticking me off a little. I think something went wrong around restarting samba servers: restart: unknown job: smbd
Also, my phone won't recognize the remote storage. IP address is either 192.168.0.8, or 192.168.0.255, and I've tried both.
Any ideas?
Ok, here's another question:
If I buy a Nexus 4, which comes unlocked, from Google, should I be able to just install Titanium Backup and remove what I want?
Anybody know??

Thank you all for your help!

[Q] So I'm rooted now..

So I'm rooted and I have SuperSU installed.
I'm not interested in flashing a custom rom just yet as I'm not having any problems with stock.
If I was to root, I was told to look for vanilla or vanilla based roms....so if anyone has suggestions there...
Anyway, I would like to remove a lot of the bloatware.
What program can I use to delete apps that I couldn't delete while non-rooted?
Titanium Backup.
Backup all the apps you delete though, because if you accidentally delete an important piece of bloatware (oxymoron), you'll want it back.

Thank you.
Do we have a list of apps that are safe to remove?
Generally all Sprint labeled apps are A-OK!
Also, many are available on the play store.
If you install the MoDaCo toolkit (look in the forums for the link), there's an option called "button mod" that will let you disable all system apps. If you don't really know what you're doing, disabling is much safer than outright removing, especially if you're considering staying with stock.
There are a number of stock-based ROMs, but rooted+stock is probably a better way of getting started.

I don't disagree, but MoDaCo is free and provides an integrated solution (the stock app manager) to just get your feet wet with what you should disable/really, really shouldn't. It's also not particularly hard; like Titanium Backup it requires two apps installed, and you check a box in one and you're done.
Not that I have anything against paying for apps. Titanium Backup is one of my most-frequently used apps, but I can also remember some major disasters I brought upon myself when I was first learning how it worked.

I had it done on my M8. They have to send you a link to the app, and you have to install it, they can't just do it without your permission.
The app will also block any access to keyboard (when they used it, I had to type everything and it specifically states that all access to the screen is currently blocked when typing anything), it basically just lets them use the device a bit, and check some settings to make sure everything is proper.
Just uninstall the app after, and done.

If it was new device, I don't see how they would do that unless they were going to use ATT Locker (which I hate). If to external, then it's just a setting in the phone that'll move everything to the external.
Still, she would have to ask for your permission, which she did. I wouldn't worry about it, they can't get that data anyway.

I called att once when I had my s4. However I had that phone so locked down even they couldn't get a connection established. When they would try to connect they would get a rejection message and my phone would force close the app. They use this to trouble shoot our phones when we call support. They ask you to accept a text link which grants them control of your phone. What you see they see. I do not like this because they can see notifications like text messages in the status bar. You will also be asked to install an apk. I don't like this idea because I have private information on my phone. But someone who is not very literate with phones may need this type of support to fix their phone malfunctions.

Not giving choice of "Just Once" and "Always"

As the title said, the phone doesn't give me the choice of always or just once, there's only a menu and I can click the app that automatically becomes the "default" app... It sucks as I need to save a pdf from Outlook to One Drive to then open it in write pdf but it won't since one drive is the default app and I don't get the choice...
How do I fix that??
Experiencing the same.. Any fix? And the menu button [(long-press) back button] sometimes doesn't work well.

I don't think you can "fix" it but you can undo the default by going to settings then applications then going into default applications and clearing that apps default.
I hate this "feature" depending on what I am doing I always want to use different apps to open files. Come on Samsung (or Google) fix this. I think it is Samsung as I had a G4 and had the option on my G4

You can always reset defaults, but once you open a link in an app with a specific app, dont you want to keep that choice for the future? I don't mind the change
This is frustrating! I'm going to check out that app. I'm commenting to be a part of this thread for future fixes.
The problem in note 5 . I have note 4 with lollipop 5.1.1 and has no problem
I hate the disappearance of (just once and always) option that i used frequently, hope to fix it in next update
You can go into default apps and clear it. Then choose your app when you open that file. Or, use ES File Explorer to open as. There's no problem with the phone. There cut out unnecessary crap, which I think is better. That screen would always come up and piss people off. Haha.

Yeah, this annoyed me too. Certain things you want options for. Like wallpapers, ringtones, ECT. Someone in another thread mentioned "better open with" app. Works well

There's no fix for this, at least for now, I talked with Samsung Customer support they did like that to "please their customers" (I don't understand); it's not a lollipop issue, other models like core prime and others with 5.1.1 still ask always or just once, it's really frustrating, but even more frustrating is to find people out there that is happy with this change, ''unnecessary crap'' they call it, since they do not know how to use their phones looks like they want everybody else to suffer, it's so simple if you do not like it! just click ALWAYS and leave the rest of the people that use their phones for more than just calls, chat and listen to music to keep using our amazing JUST ONCE and let us be happy!!!!, what else we will have to take from Samsung?
NO SD CARD SWAP
NO WATER PROOF
NO BATTERY SWAP
COPYCAT DESIGN
EAR PHONES PLUG AT THE BOTTOM
AND NOW THEY TOOK OUR OPTION TO CHOOSE!!!!
this company it's going backwards or what?
this happened on my note 4 as well with 5.1.1.
the change was completely unnecessary, as people could just click "always" if they wanted. why remove the option?
but for those of us who open diff links in diff apps depending on the context. we are screwed?
has anyone found a fix?
Don't be selfish

Don't call unnecessary crap to such a smart option just because you only use your cellphone just for chat and Facebook navigation, it's very simple, it's just two options and by simply clicking ALWAYS!!! you can be happy! and leave the rest of us, those who really use our cellphones as smart devices enjoy our freedom to CHOSE!!! and let us be happy with our choice that we miss so much ''JUST ONCE''.

If you hate the phone so much, why did you buy it? Relax man, it is what it is. You yelling here isn't going to change anything.
Exactly... Sell it on swappa and move on if you hate it so much...

You shouldn't give useless advises, I would if I could, first I have to wait up to 6 months for another swap and second I can't sell it for the price that I paid for the phone which it's dropping very quickly.
Luckily it's not all over and this app will fill the emptiness in the heart of those who miss the liberty of CHOOSING, the app "Better Open With" will make your life easier, it worked for me and don't ask for any information.

Thanks for this app. Just noticed this same issue on my S7 and sometimes I use different browsers for search. So having to go in and clear out the default each time wouldnt have been cool. I like how the app has a countdown and pause as well. Great suggestion.
