Ho Xda,
I am a VZW retail moto X user, currently running 4.4 via safestrap on top of a 4.2.2 post camera fix bootloader. Basically , flashed 4.4 over stock slot in safestrap does the trick because kernel and baseband can load since they are digitally signed.
My question is, will this method work for 4.4.2 once the firmware is released to the wild? Is there anything about 4.4.2 that would not allow me to keep my system on 4.2.2, like I am now?

I am also interested to see if this works. OP if you do this, please post results.
There's a thread dedicated to locked bootloader issues like this.

Do not take the ota, wait for the sbf firmware and flash with rsdlite, I have seen and read more problems due to accepting an ota, patience my friend. No guarantee that you will have an issue but its better to be safe than sorry

SAme here, but what If I unroot via toolkit? Dangerous?
If you have deleted system apps, flashed a custom recovery or things like that then either SBF back to the original 4.2.2 firmware or 4.4 when available. If its only root you can just take the OTA. It will kill root during the process.
Title might be a bit confusing, but this is the current status of my phone:

My questions is, how do I get Android 4.4 and have it stay rooted (for the purposes of tethering)
Check out the "slap my moto" thread in original development. It'll take you through the process of installing a back door for root (not actually rooting yet) on 4.2.2 and then upgrading to 4.4 with root

this is a easy answer have you ever install 4.4.2 firmware via rsd lite or fastboot
if yes then your stuck with 4.4.2
if not you should safely be able to flash 4.2.2 camera update or 4.4 with no issues.
but what version of bootloader is 30.71??? i have seen only 30.b3 and 30.b4??one for 4.4 and the other for 4.4.2, so what with 30.71?

Go to settings -> about phone. What Android Version does it show? 4.2.2, 4.4, or 4.4.2?
Unless you or someone else has flashed another firmware on the phone, then the bootloader version will match the OS version.
Its 4.2.2 i think is after the camera ota

30.70 = original 4.2.2
30.71 = 4.2.2 with camera update
I guess one thread wasn't enough, so you opened up another one

Do I have to go back and find the 3rd one that explains how you messed up your first moto

Thanks, thats it.
Flashallthetime, i dont want to touch my phone again, i know that i was only one bite to kill it, i just find something weird (the 30.71) and was asking about that.....anyways, since the problems with moto x bootloaders, and the thing with the post and after camera updates, i would like to know what blootloader i am installing (if i do this in a future) with every rom i find, that's the readon for my other tread, only to know more about what i am installing, i thinks that's valid or not?
I just got my 4.2.2 GT-i9295.
Here's too much confusing information, can someone please answer:
Root the device now? with what? (a link please)
OR let it install the 4.4.2 OTA update first? (if the ~200MB one is 4.4.2??)
or can I just flash a pre-rooted 4.4.2?
I looked through various threads over the last 2 hours, I'm confused now... one says 4.4.2 will lock the bootloader and KNOX will screw things up, but another says that's only for AT&T versions, I have INTL... and another says everything is not a problem, KingoApp can do it. And another says I have to downgrade to 4.3 again ?!?
4.4.2 isnt out for the i9295 yet. Im in the same boat and just waiting for something definitive which will probably be OTA.

can i get the i9295 4.4.2 rooted version yet?
also in the same boat,
reading all these different threads about 4.4.2 and rooting but getting confused, Seems a lot of the instructions are for the i537.
I'm currently on 4.2.2 with I9295 unlocked and rooted. build number is jdq39.i9295vjuamg3. would like to upgrade it to 4.4.2 but absolutely want a rooted phone. looking for a straight forward guide to follow. FYI i have ti backup pro and busybox installed. can anyone point me to the correct thread.
normally i stick with the stock versions but if there is a very good and widely recognized non stock 4.4.2 version with everything working and maybe some of the bloat taken out i'd be happy to give that a try. again if anyone can post a link to the thread with some relatively straight forward instructions that would be great.
or do i need to wait a bit longer for the rooted version of 4.4.2 for the i9295?
thanks folks
bob
I have a used Unlocked XT1064 US Version with build 21.85.23 and I want to upgrade to lollipop but it does not work OTA. I am assuming it's because this phone has a custom build? (it seems to also have TWRP). So I believe have that I have to do stock recovery, but my question is which stock recovery firmware do I need to install that will allow me to get the latest updates OTA? and Is this the best way to upgrade?
Thank you
Look in the "G 2014 Android Development" forum at a thread by Shawn5162 titled "Windows Tool Restore to Stock". Sorry, in this app I can't pull up the exact thread. Also it's going to matter who your carrier is since a few carriers won't push out an ota ever.

It will. Also, look at the following post. The first 6 steps are a step by step for getting back to a stock kit kat phone. Everything after 6 will be for going up to Lollipop. You can get the image from Shawn's post for 21.85.17 and do it manually from the link below, or use the tool.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/how-upgraded-consumer-cellular-moto-g-t2938151
Since it's a 1064 I'm guessing it's for use in the US. I'm also thinking that it won't OTA because either you need to drop back to 21.85.17 or you're on a carrier like Consumer Cellular that doesn't do OTA at all. If you still can't get OTA and want Lollipop, then you can do what the poster did in the above link and use all those steps to get to Lollipop. I would suggest what ever you do, read all the posts if possible because sometime you get helpful hints that make the process a lot smoother.
Also ignore the fact that the above is for a Consumer Cellular phone. They're standard 1064's, but will never get OTA's.
