Always Listening PROOF of Concept - Nexus 5 General

Hey Nexus 5 owners,
Just saw this break my news feed:
https://plus.google.com/106978520009932034644/posts/H4CiUhBRghi
Proof that we can have Always Listening on the nexus 5. Hopefully this gets some big attention because it's one of the most wanted Moto X features available!
Sorry if this is a double post, but I don't think so considering it's 6 hours old.

Incredible! This deserves to be posted in general!

Rated newsworthy. Hopefully this gets featured on the portal and gets the attention it deserves. Can't wait to see what comes of this! Thanks for the post.

That would be so awesome if they could port that; it's the feature I miss from my Moto X the most (besides Active Display)

This is amazing because they can use that hack to use the low powered core for other features like tap on and music playing.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

would be awesome making it usable for every N5 owner! Looking forward to it!

I'm surprised that this has not caused the Nexus 5 forum to XpLoDWilD. Guillaume does some excellent work.

I to think this a big seller for X. I am anxious to see what the X2 is like. But also really love me N5.

I read somewhere that we can't have always listening because it needs trademark from nuance, both moto x and note 3 have it but nexus 5 doesn't.

The main reason we don't have an always listening feature is because of the complications and licensing at the hardware level. Google chose to use the low-core processor for a step counter, which I think is a lot less useful thank touchless control. Hopefully Guillame can prepare a version free of copyright infringement or trademarks/licensing and allow us N5 users to make full use of our S800!

Sorry for the slow reply! I was debating between general and apps but ultimately chose this section because I thought it was more related to an app, but I still hope everyone sees it It's proof that our S800 chip is capable of more than just a pedometer.

You can message a mod and ask them to move it for you. It would definitely get more attention there.
I agree. I would much rather have the always listening feature instead of a pedometer. I still have my Virgin Mobile step counter/pedometer from my old job. I can't login to the site anymore or anything, but it still works fine if I want to keep track of my steps.

Moved.

Funny that this is a built in feature of the snapdragon 800 CPU.
Wonder why it hasn't been used on any phone yet....

The question is did Google keep that patent or hand it down to lenovo
As the deal was they sell moto to lenovo for stock and cash and keep a handful of patents but the rest goes to lenovo question is did they keep that active listening patent

I hope google kept that feature since that was the most talked about feature of the Moto X. Maybe the next Nexus will have that feature.

I'd like to have this on my Sony Xperia Z Ultra

This would be amazing to have on the Nexus.

This would be fantastic if we see it on the N5.

So I take it that google just doesnt care about the consumer experience.

Just got a nexus 4 for a friend and I am appalled at how average the screen still looks with stock kernel, how on earth has google not fixed this yet? Why does someone need to install franco kernel or whatever to get the best use of the hardware? Wasnt sheer optimization the hallmark of nexus? What is google doing it doesnt even care.
Similar was the story with the nexus S. You needed custom kernel to unlock the audio capability of the phone because google didnt want us to listen to such audio quality? It was simply appalling and did not make any sense at all especially after listening just how much difference it made to the sound quality and power.
I dont have much experience with the galaxy nexus so I cant say but once again the same old BS with the nexus 4, install custom kernel for blah blah cuz google is too lazy/doesnt care. Franco kernel makes such a big difference to the screen and there is obviously no "drawback" to this that I can see so what is google doing? It doesnt want its users to use their smartphones on a more beautiful screen with no cost added? The nexus 4 stock screen is even worse than the i9023 nexus S, what more can be said!!
PS: I am a power user and have no issues installing custom roms and kernels but due to google's indifference on so many things it seems like the nexus isnt that great a phone for noobs as it could be.
The screen looks much better now in Android 4.3
"Noobs" probably don't even know about the N4. They all buy the Galaxy S3/S4 or iCrap.

I think the screen is pretty good on my stock nexus 4 and thats from someone whos been a amoled user from the very start and i dont think google is the only one which didnt unlock its audio capabilities as samsung did the same with their galaxy s, that needed a kernel change i.e voodoo sound to release the full wolfson power.
Most people I know never even heard of the Nexus. I have to explain to them it is a Google phone. It isn't that Android doesn't care about the consumer. It is that this phone isn't targeted towards the average consumer. It is more a developers phone and such being the case, tweaking can be left for the great developers here.

Yes but its an old story now, I havent heard of any such thing with the S3 and S4.
I think you've missed the point of the Nexus line. First and foremost it is a developer oriented platform. If it was meant to be pretty and have tons of near-useless eye candy and apps you'd be looking at an iPhone or Samsung or HTC. Customize the Nexus however you want, it is meant to be a blank slate.

From the sharp mind that brought you 'all android apps have lag' and 'I don't understand why people complain about on screen buttons'... Here comes another epic thread.
Please everyone, take a look at the wonderful content that comes out of this guy's mind.
Look at it and lose the last hope you had in humanity!
Just kidding , don't.
He's a lame troll, don't feed the critter.
Pretty much the Uwe Boll of xda, top quality content.

Thanks @drakester but I think the best thing is that honestly I don't think Gambler even owns Nexus 4.
So I'm not sure why to crap with all the negativity against it or Google and in this day and age with so many choices I can't even comprehend why not to go with the device you like instead of complain or sit down and start tweeking the way you want it - its Android! And please don't say there are limitations to what you can do with the customisation...
Or as an alternative please construct proper discussion and not complain.
Edit: please.... Power user? Or maybe yes you are right just a user indeed. So if yoy have so many issues why not to create something that everyone else could use it and enjoy it and you can set Google example how you believe things should be done.

One of the reasons why I get a nexus. Everywhere I have gone, it grabs attention. People used to seeing S3s and iPhones go 'that's a cool looking phone, which one is it'. Has even been a good conversation starter for me a few times. One time when I said it was from LG, this guy was like 'lg makes such nice phones too?!!'? LOL
N4 is relatively unknown, Google intended it to be that way..... imho, that's the only thing that makes any sense. Had the n4 had half the marketing the s3 or s4 had I think the n4 would've really made some noise.
What a shame, so many miss out on experiencing pure vanilla awesomeness

to Flex or not to Flex

ive been with XDA a while now and it keeps me off the streets and away from drugs and alcohol. I have had the Infuse, Note 1 and now the Mega 6.3.
I have rooted and flashed more times than I can count, even if I take my shoes off, except for the Mega. (stooped bootloader)
having a few minor issues with my Mega and have been given the option to trade in. even with its issues, I love the real estate of 6.3 inches. who wouldn't right?
once you feel the girthyness, a 5.? screen just doesn't cut it.
so in the store I discovered the Flex and was surprised to find out it is a 6 inch screen. that I can deal with.
I have been doing some reading here as to the satisfaction with the device. I do trust the majority of folks here on XDA and would like to solicit even more feedback. maybe some inclination as to the possible future of development here.
let her rip
I can attest to the awesomeness of the screen real estate for sure! It is a 720p screen so keep that in mind, but videos and pictures do not suffer bc of it.. I absolutely love the way it feels in hand, in pocket, and during a phone call. This is the first phone I've used that I can pinch between my shoulder and cheek, and not have someone complain because they can't hear me anymore.. The phone is only lacking in one area, IMO, and that would be the lack of integration of the screen.. The lock screen effect is cool, but I'd like to see that utilized in menus, Chrome, Google Now and the like..The battery is a damn monster, no doubt about it! I easily get two days worth of use and 6 hours screen time every charge cycle!

I did mean to add that I love my flex. As to development it's looking like a bootloader bypass is in the near future with several devs already saying they're bringing AOSP based ROMs and I know I'll be releasing a stock based with light theme work (i.e. no more ugly grey).

I recognise your avatar from the Note threads, or was it the Infuse? Although I havent seen it in a while.
As stated, I did see and have read 2 or 3 post with the like or dislike agenda in the threads. I am also aware if the many threads that exist in the context of "what is the best rom".
The future of the development was intended to be the main question. I got the Mega in hope of a real future in development for the phone and now it is all but dead, for At&t variation that is. I was attempting to not walk down that road again.
With your experience here and a recognized face sort of speak, I tbought that your XDA experience, and others alike, might see that and offer the valued insight I seek.
But I thank you for your very predictable response.

The Flex hasn't been out that long. With time development should pick up but who really knows. LG locked it down good and at this time we have no recovery. I'm a flash whore as well but it's nice to take a break and get other things done. lol

It's an awesome phone. Like LG's software better as well. Runs smoother than my note 2 and feels better in the hand. I honestly don't think you go wrong if you decide on this phone. Best thing to do is go to a store and test it out. Worse case you have 14 days to test drive it, just need to pay the 50$ restocking fee.
Personally haven't felt the need to root this beast yet. It does amazing out of the box.

I think I'm going to switch to the Note 3. I have a few apps that I use that don't work properly on this phone, that worked perfectly fine on my Note 2. Also I miss the physical home button. I end up hitting the onscreen home button rather than the spacebar on my Flex, and I hate that.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Flex, and I would keep it if it weren't for those issues. I think if you factor out this issues I have, its a much nicer device

I hated that as well lol. There is the option to swipe the bottom row keys to the right or left. It might help some, but I found that it becomes a nuisance after a while. I was in your boots as well and did make the switch to the N3 and am happy. I miss the curve and a few small nuances of the Flex, but I don't regret switching.
Pretty sure the G2 xposed app lets you shrink the nav bar so you won't hit the button by mistake. LG needs to have that option with stock.

its a great phone, but its not ever going to get any development traction, youre probably better off switching to a note or a g2

long time no talk

Hello everybody!
Yes its been like for ever since i broke my HTC First and moved on and since then ive had an Atrix HD and now have a Red Nexus 5. Running lollipop.
But still i look back to this phone and still think this is probably the best phone ive owned. All day battery, great size and build quality, stock android. Yes development was always a minus, but still.
How is everyone doing?
PS: thinking of getting my sister an HTC First, its a pretty solid device hardware wise and she doesnt care much about software, she is using an old ipod touch and an ipad, shes tired of ios
Good to see someone else converting to the Android master race > lol. I agree with the fact that the battery generally lasted all day, but the lack of speed is what caused me to want to get something better. But yeah it was a good device when I came from a MyTouch 3G and then 3 Windows Phones.
Off topic here, are you seeing any drop in battery life on the official Lollipop update on your N5 compared to an AOSP version from a few days ago?

Haha I've converted to android since 2011 and my sister never likes apple anyways.
Miss this community so much, looks like everyone has left like Abraham and loir.
Um at first battery life was more like battery death but after a reboot and full charge I did manage to get my minimum of 4 hours screen on time. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get 5 hours.
I was thinking moto g, vs the HTC first, but I haven't found anything in it that is better than in the First. Especially for my sis who has really small hands surprisingly (she's 5 years younger but as big as me and I'm 19...)
still using my First and still hoping to get at least KitKat so that i can pair with android wear...
but looks like no luck and i have to change my phone soon.
:crying:
but seriously between first and Moto G, i'll get the moto G
at least you get official Lollipop support. 5 hrs SOT.
The 1st gen Moto G size is not that much bigger than the 1st

Yeah Lloir is no longer here since he bricked his First so he just upgraded to something else. Jmz is no longer here, and I'm not sure if sun_dream is here either. I just hate to see such a good device "go to waste".
I also wish i could port cm11, atleast learn some how, but my only computer is my desktop at home, and internet at 700kbps is not enough to do anything except browse the web. But if internet wasnt a problem id definitely try even though i have no idea how.
CM puts so much effort into mainstream devices that will get updates anyways and never focus on forgotten devices.

Yeah and it's sad because it didn't use to be like that. It's gonna be even worse when CM12 is released because they said that if a device 1) is not owned by maintainers or 2) can't cooperate with the new security measures then they won't support it at all.

I dont want to upgrade also, I know i'll miss the design of the First if I sell it
I agree, First is a great phone, stylish, great design and ergonomics, i will keep this phone no matter what. My daily driver is Moto X, 2013 model. I like to use my phone in one hand, never liked anything over 4.7-in screen size, have had Samsung S3, original Note, Note 2 and Note 3, traded them all, although i really liked S3 the most, couldn't live with the Notes. Htc First has become my backup phone. Previously, i used a Palm Pre Plus as my backup, but i finally traded it in.

Yeah totally agree. I have a nexus 5 right now and it's quite great for one handed use. But looking for a first for my mom

Not that I know of. It's strange considering getting drivers for this chip set should be a piece of cake...

Moto X features on Nexus 6

This has probably been asked before but a search didn't yield any satisfying responses either way.
The Moto X has a handful of features unique to itself that are very nice to have. I had the first generation and fell in love with it. With my Nexus 6 I love having the Nexus feel, but I want some of the features.
Have any ROMs ported over some of the software features of the Moto X? Some features are in Lollipop, but I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried to port over the gesture to launch the camera, or try to port over the breathing active display (Google's variant is very underwhelming and not very responsive to light changes). Since Motorola made the hardware, I wasn't sure if there was some cross compatibility, or if any attempt had been made.

Nougat

Nougat coming in the next few months...?
http://www.droid-life.com/2016/09/27/moto-z-moto-g4-nougat-update-release-date-q4/
Sounds good to me! I'm on DL every day, but man there are some haters in the comments lol. It's like Motorola/Lenovo killed their firstborn or something.

I've always been of the mind that people are more likely to post to complain than otherwise. You rarely see, "hey, this is great!" .. I think it is often assumed that posting those kinds of comments add nothing to the discussion, so people don't do it...
Respond if you agree

Agreed. I see what you did there.
If it turns out to be true and even if they they just push it to those who oped in for soak test and whatnot and not a full out release in the next few weeks i am happy with Lenovo and this phone. I love what Lenovo did with the phone. I said updates will make or break it and i was scared about that when they said they could not commit to the security patches. But were getting those patches and have a word on the update so far so good. Hope they keep it up. This is the best phone out all around.
I'll still believe it when I see it. Moto has really been sucking badly on updates the last few years.

But the last few months they've been excelling!
All I know, as a Samsung fanboy in the past... I couldn't be happier that I chose to change to the Z Force... besides not bursting into flames in my pocket... the battery life puts EVERY Samsung I ever had to shame.

I agree 100% the funny part is I decided I needed a non samsung device as soon as I saw that lil wayne commercial that had him dumping champagne on the phone. I told coworkers that wanted the Note 7 prior to the release to get this phone instead because Samsung spent far too much for lil wayne for proper research and development, they all made fun of me...until the note started exploding.

Off topic but the issue is simple with the Note 7. I checked this my self. But its not cheap for them and the "Fixed" ones were not fixed and there was no way for them to fix it.
Simple version. The IC samsung chosen to handle the monitoring of the voltage for the battery was the cheapest they could find. That being said they can be way off in terms of calibration. The note 7 i had charged my battery to 4.9v. Phone would read 4.405v but a fluke on the batt reads 4.921v. And that is dangerous. So for all i know they could be charging to 5+ volts and no wounder they are bursting into flames. Issue has nothing to do with the battery and changing it wont do a thing. Its an issue with the ic on the board. And the IC has been used in other things that handle li-ion and li-po related charging and also caused problems on them.
Back on topic.
So we get 7.0 before the end of the year. Im guessing November. So far so good on the updates. But im wondering if they are going 7.0 or just going to jump to 7.1. Chances are no 7.1 that fast but so far the updates have been good. And the moto mod updates have been amazing. I would like to see 7.0 by Nov. 17th. But we prob wont see the roll out start until the end of Nov.
Does anyone know if Nougat will return the ability to save to SD or move apps to external sd?

It will not. Motorola has removed the Apps 2 SD feature. It was replaced by Adoptable Storage.

Just finished installing the Nougat update on my phone. After updating I tested it out in a Daydream VR and it works!
I wish someone would post the update files
Uuuurgh I wish there was a way to force it. I've been obsessively checking for software updates all day :|

Yes yes yes yes yes. Got rid of my Gear VR and S7 Edge for a PSVR and have been waiting for a good headset for my Z Droid. So it works with the remote and what not?

Yup, works exactly like it does on the Pixel. It runs the Daydream app, supports the VR keyboard, etc.

Not that I'm aware of. I've done plenty of soak tests for previous Moto devices and I got invites for soak tests for the camera and projector (which I don't have either), but I never got one for the phone. The update just popped up for me last night.
So far the only Nougat issues I'm having is the fact that my Ambient Moto Display no longer works. Slightly annoying, but it could be worse.

Great that means it's a general release!
Do a hard reset, it's always recommended to do a hard reset after a major update for optimal performance and user experience.
Strike my last statement. I just got it working. I need up just clearing the data for the Moto app and set it up again. Moto Display seems to work perfectly fine now.
