[Q] Freeze notification for OTA - Moto X Q&A

Rooted non dev VZW Moto X, want to try and freeze the notification to pull the OTA. I froze "updater" in TiBu and I still get it. I also disabled notifications for framework in the apps list and I still get it. Any other suggestions?

I have XT1053 and not Verizon version. I froze MotorolaOTA 1.0 in TiBu and it took care of update notifications for me. My coworker has Verizon DE edition and it worked for him too. Is that the app that you froze?

Just froze it, we shall see! Thanks!

Are there any other apps that can freeze beside TiBu? I don't have the donate version.

I used TiBu so can't help you. It was worth the $6 to me. But you can just download root browser and navigate to /system/priv-app then press and hold 3c_ota.apk and select rename. Rename it 3c_ota.apk.bak. Then when or if you want to take the OTA, just rename it back to 3c_ota.apk.
Also, you can use root browser to delete the OTA file from /cache. Navigate to /cache and find the OTA and then press and hold then select delete.

Frozen or removed bloat

Is it just me or after the ota, are frozen or removed bloat apps coming back somehow?? I have used titanium to remove VZW tones and navigator and those apps keep showing up. I'm thinking related to the trend of updating system apps in the play store?

Make the changes (remove which apps you want) in the "recovery" mode and then reboot into "normal" mode and the changes will stick.

Can't find apps to block OTA on rooted Moto X

Hello, everyone. Long time reader, first time poster.
I just finished rooting my new Developer's Edition GSM unlocked Moto X. As I started to freeze the usual apps that are necessary in order to stop OTA notices and lessen the likelihood of sending my device into a bootloop by mistake, I noticed that the apps that I had on my Verizon Droid Maxx aren't here. I saw some threads that stated that I needed to freeze update.apk, MotorolaOTA, FOTA, and rename otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak.
Of all of those steps, I've only been able to do two of them: freezing MotorolaOTA and renaming otacerts.zip.
Where can I find the other two apps to freeze? Is it even necessary if I've already frozen MotorolaOTA and renamed otacerts? When I had my Droid Maxx, I was unable to click on System Updates in About Phone without the app crashing. Here, after freezing and renaming these two apps, I can still check for updates, which leaves me a little worried.
Thank you for your help.
3C_OTA.APK is one you want to rename.. It exists in /system/apps or /system/priv-app (I forget which).

Great, I went ahead and renamed that one 3C_OTA.APK.BAK. I can still check for updates in System Updates, which is something I couldn't do on my Droid Maxx after freezing all the OTA apps.
Is that normal for this phone? Are there any other apps / files I need to take care of?
Thanks for the reply!
Any other ideas? The fact that I can still check for an update makes me nervous. I'm just trying to confirm that this was all I needed to do.

MotorolaOTA 1.0 is what I froze on my retail X (while it was downloading an update) and as soon as it was frozen, the download icon in the status bar disappeared :good: I'm not sure where the apk is located to move/rename since I used tibu to freeze it.

Renaming 3C_OTA.APK has worked for me and others who wanted to block OTA notifications..
here are links to just a few times before that it has been suggested...

I'm sure if you searched, you could find more instances of it being suggested, and successful.

[Q] Deleting Apps?

I have my S4 Active rooted and want to get rid of the usless and "have to pay" apps. How can I do this without screwing up the phone?

I installed Titanium Backup and it lets you backup and uninstall apps.

I wouldn't uninstall the apps. Use Titanium and freeze the apps. A lot of people ran into problems when the OTA update came out. If system files were modified or deleted, the update wouldn't go through. If there's another update, simply unfreeze them. I don't know if we'll get any more updates but freezing them is safer

Agreed, just freeze them. I uninstalled all the bloatware, and now I have no screen rotation (which I read is believed to be related to uninstalling Samsung Hub).

launcher FC and other random FCs after android 4.4.4

I unlocked throught sunshine and receive the ota zip. Then I factory reset my moto x. However, many apps randomly FC including launcher.
Anyone has an idea?
Edit1: I am on AT&T
Edit2: I figured out a way to reproduce the launcher FC: pull different app icons to the "app info" on top of the launcher (original launcher). The launcher sometimes gets FC after you enter the app info page.
Try to clear your cache trough recovery.

You must have a conflicting app.
Do a safe boot, at the first logo, hold vol down.
Btw, I use app install history from play to have an uninstall plan when this happens.
What is your carrier?

It restores the whole phone, much more than the sys/boot of a nandroid.

[Q] Diable 5.1 update on rooted Pure?

I have a rooted stock ROM Pure and I want to avoid the 5.1 update for a couple of reasons.
Does anyone know how to disable the update process on these devices?
TIA

Disable MotorolaOTA in the system apps in settings. If you're rooted, you can freeze it in the /system folder using Titanium or whatever else you use. Safest thing to do is to rename it with a .bak at the end, then when you're ready to update you just remove it and reboot.

Thanks for the reply. I froze it with Ti Backup, but I'm still able to check for updates manually and it reports normally.
Shouldn't that function be disabled if the OTA apparatus is truly disabled?
I do see in firewall a process called 'Device Management that I thought I could block MotorolaOTA from communicating, but there are other functions bundled, so I don;t want to do that.
Ideas, anyone?

Motorola will still be able to be communicated to, but the OTA function will be disabled, eg. no OTA will be detected. It is my understanding that blocking MororolaOTA just keeps the notification from appearing and prevents OTA downloads.

Thanks again - that makes sense. I'll see the rollout on my stock Pure (if I still have it and decide not to sell it) and be able to compare in real-time if it does the trick.
