[Q] Rooted i9295 won't boot into recovery - Galaxy S 4 Active Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted my i9295 using the Chainfire Auto-Root instructions listed in the second response here. Sorry, can't external link yet.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2462814
I now have root and SuperSU, but my phone won't boot into recovery. I can boot into download, but when I try to boot into recovery the phone just shuts itself off.
I live in a country where warranties mean nothing, so thanks much for all the help so far!

I also forgot to mention, it is Android 4.2.2

[CWM][ROOT] Flash CWM recovery to locked tab with ODIN

***WARNING***
Before you do this, remember that it's your $500+ toy and your responsibility, not mine. I'm just this guy, you know?
Here's a quick way to get Clockworkmod on a locked (and even unlocked) Tab:
-Get this ODIN flashable CWM 4.0.0.4 for GTab 10.1 WiFi. This is only for the WiFi model and will boot to a black screen on any other model. If you have an LTE, you must use the image in this post.
-Follow this procedure, but instead of flashing the file listed there use the one you just downloaded
Congrats, you are now running CWM. If you want to return to stock retail use this image instead.
Image creation procedure detailed in the last three steps here.
Nice thx bro. Some really good stuff from you lately
Pokey,
Once I do this mod and have CWM running will I be able to flash files via CWM?
I have a locked bootloader and am not able to select a zip to flash when I am in the stock recovery.
I guess what I am asking is if I do your mod will I be able to use CWM to flash the root zip so I can root my tab?
Thanks
Super thanks!!
It worked like charm in my locked retail 10.1!!! I've also installed su, busybox etc. Titanium backup works with su!!
Thanks
Yes, Just did it!!

Did you have to flash the exploit zip after or were you rooted after odin installed CWM?
Did you have the debugging mode checked when using odin?

I installed the exploit zip after odin using the CWM. I put it in download mode as described.
Has anybody else used this method on a retail tab with the locked boot loader?
I only see one person posting that it worked for them and am wondering if anybody else has been successful?
Thanks
Is it necessary to flash a new kernel after flashing CWM in order for it to stick? Or does this permanently flash CWM?

This flashes CWM permanently. This gives the same result as the other locked root procedure if you ODIN this file then flash the stock rooter .zip.
ok, i just did it myself and everything worked flawlessly.
Just run Odin, choose the zip from OP in the PDA field, leave everything else as it is.
Put the tab in download mode and flash using odin.
After that download the root exploit and flash the zip using CWM.
Stalls on SetupConnection for me.
does the locked tab allow you to flash a kernel?
will this work on the first galaxy tab sgh-t849
model: gt-p1000?

Yes, only the stock locked recovery prevents you from flashing a kernel, so replacing it with CWM lets you flash whatever.

Maybe this process works for the original Tab, but the image I posted here is for the 10.1 only.
so the ability to flash kernels means if ICS doesnt make it to the 10.1, we can get it through CM or some other ROM? Thats the only thing keeping me from buying the tab, i want to make sure its future proof, software wise.

Samsung could lock down ODIN or start requiring signed kernels and ramdisks by updating the bootloader with an OTA. Even the nvflash unlocked retail and I/O Tabs aren't entirely safe since the security fuses can be blown from software. I can't see a reason why they would ever want to though since they'd piss off a lot of customers.
alright thanks a lot. It seems a bit odd that samsung even locked the bootloader in the first place, given that they dont lock their phones down. I'll probably end up getting one. Thanks for the help.
noob question, but this isn't going to wipe my data is it?
Just flashing CWM will not wipe your data, but if you plan on flashing a ROM, or the TW update then you will be required to wipe

Stuck in a bootloop - please help!

Hey guys.
So, I was on 257 - downgraded so I could root.
Installed Dual Recovery and installed iHackers, it worked fine, now on 4.3 and rooted. however. I forgot to flash recoveries after the rom and as it stands at the moment, I cannot access any kind of recovery.
Everything works great. just hope this is something easily fixed. thanks as always for all the information and advice.
You will have to start a fresh from 534 as you need root to install recovery and you only have partial root on locked bootloader thats why you cannot flash a recovery I had the same problem when aroma crashed while installing :silly:
It installed room or but I couldn't install recovery lol
Thanks for the quickly reply brocky. I would actually like for this to go perfect
The thing that confused me was this page for downloading the duel recovery : http://nut.xperia-files.com/
which of these do I need for the c903?

What i need to know to root?

Hey everyone. I just recently bough a new Atrix HD since my other phone broke but anyways...
1. i noticed i can access the root of the phone (like / partition) but i cant edit it? so is this sign of root? I tried installing superuser binary and it didn't let me so i guess there is no root.
So
How do i boot into the boot loader?
What is the best method for rooting and instaling SU on my atriix (running 4.1.1)?
How do i flash a recovery and which one is best if i want to get cm11? (on my other phone i needed a completely different recovery to get kitakt)
Do i need to unlock bootloader first then root or vice versa?
So the more details the better i will understand if THANK YOU ahead of time.
sorry for such noob questions
PS yes i did google on how to do this and its a bit choppy. like no step 1 step 2 step 3.

No, its far from choppy. The only root method that works on 4.1.1 is Motochopper, and thats an automated script. So how you can say its choppy is beyond my understanding.
Since you are new to AHD, I highly recommend you reading this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2350721
I also recommend you download Mythtools, which is the all in one tool for AHD http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2262726
And download Philztouch recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2552622
Bootloader locked = enjoy stock forever
Bootloader unlocked = you can customize
Flashing a ROM is the same as with any device, boot to CWM/TWRP recovery, wipe down, and flash

OOps my bad. By chopy i meant things i found on google. like they just say "this is how you root it" but do i have to unlock bootloader first like on htc or do i root first? etc
I just used motochoper and everything runs great.
i get how to flash a rom haha but do i unlock bootloader first then recovery?
Never mind.
Thank you so much this is so much simpler than my HTC (coming from an lg where you just plug and play) so pretty much this is nothing new to me.
Thanks again.
Now....which kit kat rom would be best right now?

Yes. You have to unlock the bootloader to flash anything, including a custom recovery.
Um....okay the fastboot part....
How do i flash CWM after i have unlocked the bootloader which i just did. I just kind of wonder....do i have to dowload the 400+ megabyte .zip for fastboot?! or im getting something wrong.
okay awkward....
i flashed the recovery and it said the recovery (i got cwm from official cm instructions) and it said it installed fine.
The phone boots and stuff...but when i cant do the following
1. Reboot into recovery using volume down and power button
2. Reboot into recovery using fastboot command (it reboots but instead of a recovery it gives me an android with an exclamation point in a red triangle)

You're booting into stock recovery. You have to change install-recovery.sh to install-recovery.sh.bak You should find it in /system/etc I believe
Then reflash the custom recovery

Not sure, personally I'm still on stock 4.1.1. I came from the A4G and the furthest we got was 4.2.2, so yeah, you could say that I'm staying with what I'm comfortable for the moment.

[Q] Where's my recovery?

So I just recently decided to flash the unbloated OTA offered in the download section. I was on the 12 radio before running a regular ROM with ROM Manager and everything working perfectly. I flashed everything and all went smoothly. I flashed the OTA and the other required .zip. I then tried to root with IOroot25. Well my phone is detected, but when it goes to reboot into recovery, it never really does. So I tried to adb reboot recovery and the same thing happened - not going into recovery, just kinda' sitting at a very dark, though barely lit, screen.
Everything functions fine but it appears I do not have any sort of recovery at all. How would I go about fixing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What debloated ROM did you flash?

It got removed, you need to downgrade the aboot to install a recovery once you upgrade the firmware to 24A. 24A plugs the exploit that was being used. Easiest route is to use the AutoRec app in the LG G2 Development section.

How can I use this program if I can't attain root? It says it requires root, which IOroot25 cannot do due to not having a recovery to boot into to apply the .zip.
I'm going to try the KDZ method here to flash the factory version in its full glory. Hopefully that will restore recovery mode and allow me to root the thing. I'll report back with my findings, and whether or not I was able to do this using the above link, IOroot, and AutoRec.
I am having the same issue. I was running CM11 on a verizon lg g2 with CWM recovery. I flashed prerooted 4.4.2 from MicroMod777 along with the KK baseband. It worked, but I lost root AND recovery. Now when I tried to use ioroot 25, my phone won't boot into recovery at all. It appears that I lost recovery. Is there a simple way to install recovery back?

Return your phone to stock, let it take the OTA then rroot and install recovery.

Running TWRP and am happy with that but would prefer CWM touch recovery. Have tried several methods to install from various XDA treads with no luck. Any info you know of on that?
CWM installed fine for me using their purchased app and just flashing the touch version after selecting my device model.
I have also installed it using .img files provided in the forums and using Flashify to flash them.

I was able to use .img files in the forums with 11a...I never took 12b...just stayed on 11a and ignored the update.
I returned to stock to get to 24a and was able to root but can't for the life of me get CWM recovery installed. I have tried flashify, installing zips, pushing .img with adb...no dice. I get error messages every time or the black screen you described in this thread's original post.
Just tried to load the zip from TWRP...no dice.
I purchased touch through the paid version of CWM and chose my device...nada...it's killing me!
I can live with TWRP but love CWM touch. Really at a loss.
Are you running 24a? If so, can you point me toward the forum link you used to get CWM loaded?

With 24a I pushed it with adb instead of flashing it via Flashify and it worked decently for me. Personally, though, I do like TWRP more, albeit it doesn't have that convenient application like CWM does.

So you took the OTA and you're on 24A now? If thats the case you need to push the 12B aboot first before you can flash recovery. AutoRec will do all that. And flash recovery for you. After its finished you can flash CWM touch if you want.

Have you ever seen this? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jmz.soft.twrpmanager It flashes recovery for you, you can manage backups, with a donation you can even make live backups while still booted in Android. I haven't tried it yet because I keep forgetting. Sounds so cool though.

As you stated your bootloader is locked, you cannot flash any custom recovery. Your only option is SafeStrap, search for it.
SafeStrap
I have SafeStrap downloaded on my phone, I pressed "Install Recovery" and "Reboot to Recovery" but nothing seems to be happen. What can I do?

First, make sure you are rooted. Next make sure you have the correct version of SafeStrap for your version of Android. If your on NH3 I think you need SafeStrap v3.75 but you might want to check. If you still can't get SafeStrap to install, then you need to post your questions in the SafeStrap thread where somebody will help you.
