I'm relatively new to the Moto X and I'm rooted on 4.2.2. I keep hearing these things about post-camera OTA updates and stuff. Does the 4.4 OTA update help out the camera quality? Or is all that handled through the Camera updates through the Play Store?
Basically I'm considering staying on 4.2.2 for a while since I'm rooted and have the OTA updates frozen. But I want to make sure that my camera software still gets updates.

Awesome, thanks for the quick answer!
4.4.2 is even better

Go 4.4.2 and leave the camera in HDR mode. I think it is fine, if I want to be a professional photographer I will buy a Leica!!

At first i want to talk about your phone. it s really nice. I have use it before. And obviously you can get Camera updates from Google Play Store

HRD mode is HORRIBLE in low light. For that reason I cannot recommend leaving it in HDR.
Yep, I have found that out as well. HDR mode should stay in Auto mode.

Hello! First of all, sorry that I posted this thread in the wrong forum before coming here. I will make the thread again here and ask for the old one to be deleted.
Here is the problem: My Z1 camera can no longer focus at very close distance, since the 4.4 update. In order to show you what I am talking about, here are two photos:
i.imgur.com/5pu42ki.jpg
i.imgur.com/OfON30j.jpg
Both taken in 4.4 FW, in Superior auto mode. I also tried in Manual, but the results are also very bad and out of focus.
To show that this is absolutely not normal, here is a photo taken with the same phone in 4.3:
i.imgur.com/cinWn3o.jpg
Here is a photo taken with ASUS Memo Pad HD 7, with a relatively cheap camera that it has built-in:
i.imgur.com/Wqn3nkU.jpg
It would probably do even better in good lighting conditions. I've encountered one more user in the Sony forums with this issue and I presume either it's rare, or people just haven't found out about it yet. Can you guys do a quick test with your Z1s (assuming you are on 4.4) and see if you can get it to focus at very close distance?
Thank you for your time!
Regards

BUMP. Seriously, no one has tried this?
Which ROM? Which FTF? Which version of the Z1? Are you rooted? Have you unlocked the boot? Have you flashed any mods?
Also, that picture you say is fine from the 4.3 rom seems to be taken from further away than the similar one on the 4.4 Rom.
Try clearing data from ALL camera apps in settings.

Hello,
The phone is not rooted, and has the 4.4 FW (14.3.A.0.681). I know the 4.3 pic is from further away, but the other photos are taken with a tablet at quite a similar distance. I have not flashed anything, just updated to 4.4. It doesn't seem normal to me that it can not focus at this distance.
Here is another picture from today. You can see the Windows key is not focused. I do not believe this distance is too small, this does not seem normal to me.

Is it possible to get the Google Camera on the unrooted VZW Moto X?
I like the global panorama feature (Takes awesome pictures of baseball parks and stuff in the summer) and would like to have it. If so, where do I get it?

I recall reading it was possible, but I have no my doubts. I installed the Google camera app from the playstore and when I launched the app it simply launched the Moto version of the camera app.
I like the Google camera app as well since I use it on another device.

You can install the stock camera from the Nexus 5 (or any other Nexus device) and it should work fine without root. However, the panorama mode and Photo Sphere won't work (it'll just keep force closing).
The only way to get the stock KitKat camera to fully work is to copy over lib files (so you would need root for that).

I was not able to do that. I installed the stock camera and it would not launch, it would only launch the Moto camera.

I forgot to mention that if you really wanted the stock camera with panorama and Photo Sphere, you could always install the camera/gallery app from Android 4.3 or 4.2.2 (it fully works without root).

mmm you said you installed it from the Play Store, right? Maybe it wasn't the right file? Because I pulled the apk directly from the Nexus 5 system dump and it worked perfectly fine (aside from panorama and Photo Sphere). Then I rooted, copied over lib files, and now it fully works.

I was playing around with this last night and the Moto stock camera consistently produced better quality pictures. I like the functionality of the Nexus camera more, but not that much more that I am willing to sacrifice the quality. Thanks for passing along the link though, I really wanted to try it out.
I should also add, in case anyone is interested, the Moto camera app shoots a much taller photo, while the Google app shoots a much wider, but shorter image. Might be important for some folks.
Hi, if anyone wants to try the Moto x camera for the OnePlus here is the link . I don't know if I can post it here. I did not make this apk , thanks to whoever did. It works very smooth, its very simple and I think the autofocus works much better then stock One Plus camera.

Works for me on CM11 nightly, but the pictures look pretty bad. Not surprising, since this is Motorola we are talking about.

I've found the moto camera to be better than the Opo camera. Or any other smartphone for that matter.
Works great on Nameless! Thanks!
I installed it but there is a problem. You can only take normal pictures. What I mean by that is like... you cant change it to Night View.. or turn HDR on/off... aqua view.. and so forth.. Camera works but the settings are not changeable.
Coloured line??
I also have the "no settings" thing going on and on top of that there is a white/yellow vertical line while i am taking photos.
But i still prefer this camera app over stock camera app.
Simple point and shoot. Does take great pictures though. Nice find!
Anyone have the latest motorola camera apk working on our phones?
any improvements comparing to the stock camera app?
Who in the world would like to want a crappy camera app that can't even focus on subject. Moto x users rooting their devices to remove that app. and we are trying to install it here. Great

Hello everybody.
We all know that Moto Display is very useful and shows incoming notification. In Moto G and E devices, it activates when the phone is moved from its position, or when a flip cover over the phone is opened. However I have heard that in Moto X devices, it activates even if you wave over the proximity sensor.
So I thought of making a small app that does the same. It is on Play Store.
MotoDisplay handwave
This might be helpful to some people like me. Do hit the Thanks button if it helped you. Also rate the app a five star ??
TO BE USED ONLY ON STOCK FIRMWARE. NO CUSTOM ROMS SUPPORTED
This is a great app, I was missing a lot this feature when moving from Moto X!
Please consider using the Android ActivityRecognitionAPI to trigger the moto display only if the phone is in the "STILL" state. Otherwise the battery will be drained pretty fast when carrying the phone in the pocket, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion, will obviously look into it.
Regarding battery drain, the proximity sensor is always on even if this app is not used (Moto Display activates if you keep the proximity covered for some time and then remove the cover).
Also the app has been designed so that it won't activate MD if the phone is in pocket.
Thanks for the clarification, I was not aware that the proximity sensor is always on. You are right, the Moto Display turns on when the phone is taken out of a pocket, etc. Now I just wonder why Motorola decided not to offer this as part of the stock application. To protect Moto X sales?

Not a stupid question. I did mention that the ROM needs to be stock ROM. So this confusion might arise.
This app has nothing to do with root directly. It doesn't check for safety net. It will work whether you are rooted or not.
There is however an exception. If you use any root based utility to uninstall Moto Display apk from system, this app will no longer work.
Hey! Nice work!
I can translate it to brazilian portuguese!
Loved the app.
I also can translate it to PT-BR
