HTC One S-On & stock rom erased! - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys,
I previously submitted another thread with my issue. I just really need some help on this. I was trying to flash another rom on phone but did not notice S-On until it was done. Going thru the custom rom install, I wiped everything even my recovery backups. All i can do now is boot into HBoot, Fastboot, or TWRP recovery. How can I get pass this problem? Is there a way I can get S-Off in fastboot mode only? Please I need access to my phone
Thanks

You don't need S-OFF to flash ROMs.
Please post a "fastboot getvar all" so that so that we can see what your current state is, also what twrp version

I think flashing the ruu from this thread will help you out. Browse the thread first . It appears your bootloader is already locked. I don't think recovery matters.

As soon as I do that, I'll let you know my results. Last time i tried flashing a RUU using the .exe file I got a black screen with HTC logo and the program said failed. but I'll try this and let you know.

Since you have a custom recovery, extract boot.img from the zip, flash via fastboot : fastboot flash boot boot.img
run twrp, and install rom via sideload, like the previous guy said you don't need S-Off, with S-On you can't flash boot.img via twrp so it'll have to be done via bootloader

I am a complete noob, so how can I sideload? I tried to push using adb push but that wasn't working for me and I'm sure I have all drivers installed. When I use ADB devices cmd in cmd prompt, nothing shows, but if I do fastboot devices, I do have something show. And if I were to have assistance conducting this method, can I flash any rom this way?

Unistall htc sync and htc drivers and install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261088 these drivers, then use adb command 'adb devices' and hopefully it shows up, to sideload, it's a simple adb command. have the rom.zip in the adb folder. then use 'adb sideload rom.zip' then wait until 100% and it'll automatically run the script on twrp

You need to be in recovery to do adb devices.
You need to have the phone connected in Fastboot USB mode to do fastboot device.
These are NOT interchangeable.

Correct, either custom recovery like TWRP or CWM, or booted into OS with USB Debugging option enabled.

[Q] Phone will only succesfully flash certain roms

Hey guys!
I have a problem, and to be perfectly honest I am not a massive expert at this sort of stuff, but bare with me.
I am trying to install Virtuous ICS Rom RC2 on my Incredible S, but once I've done so it won't boot past the HTC logo. Tried a clean wipe (factory reset/cache/dalvik cache), and even changing from EXT3 to EXT4 and back, but nothing works. Now, I've had this problem before with other various ROMs, and it seems that I can only get flawless installs and boots from Cyanogenmod 7.1 and MIUI (not the ICS version).
Currently running 4EXT recovery and MIUI, but I want the ICS rom really bad, and other Incredible S users are flashing without any problems, so I'm not sure what gives.
Any and all help would be appreciated (and sorry if this is a noob-ish question and/or in the wrong forum)!
Make sure you have the newest ClockWork Recovery Mod installed. If you do try reinstalling it and an engineering hBoot. I would say the problem would be that one of those are corrupt.
I will try both of those and get back to you with the results! Thanks!
Okay, so I updated CWM to 5.0.2.0, which did not do anything. When you say reinstall, do you mean a completely removal of CWM and then installing it again? Because I'm not sure how to do that.
Also, as usual, MIUI 1.2.30 installs just fine, but I just tried installing MIUI 2.12.13 and ended up in a bootloop. So, thus far, I can only flash two roms; CM7.1 and MIUI 1.2.30. These two were the first two roms I ever flashed, not sure if that has anything to do with anything but I thought it might be worth mentioning.
Unlocked bootloader with htcdev? You might need to reflash the boot.img from your desired rom's zip file with the command
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
i think you should flash the new ROM image

Read the FAQ sticky post for info on how to flash the boot.img file in a custom ROM.zip file.
Will do, thanks guys, wish me luck.
The correct first question is: Is the OP S-Off or HTC unlocked? if it's the latter, follow Nonverbose's advice.
My phone is S-OFF.

Okay, so I highlighted FASTBOOT and pressed the power button, then plugged in the USB and it changed to FASTBOOT USB. However, my PC doesn't find my phone, so I can't run the cmd prompts. Should I just go through the steps listed in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337105?

No that would not be applicable in your case from what you have told us. If you are S-Off and have a custom ROM installed, then you probably don't have HBOOT 1.16 or 2.00. That is why I wanted you to get the Fastboot getvar all information.
Have you installed HTC Sync on your PC to get the appropriate drivers set up?
Just installed HTC Sync and got all the appropriate drivers. Still won't show up as a disk when I'm in Fastboot, but I'm guessing it's not supposed to either.

No it won't show as a disk drive. Open a command window and set the working directory to the one where you installed adb.exe and Fastboot.exe and then type:
Fastboot devices and it should respond with your device serial number. If it does then you can type:
Fastboot getvar all

Ok you still have S-Off and now that you have fastboot working I would try reflashing CWM 5.0.2.0 recovery image in fastboot mode.
Copy the CWM recovery.img file to the directory where you have fastboot.exe. If you have a zip file for CWM5.0.2.0 then open the zip and copy the .img file.
Then in fastboot mode type the command:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Then I would try flashing Virtuous ICS.
Hm, sadly that didn't help, it still just bootloops and/or get stuck on the bootscreen (depending on the ROM, tried both the Virtuous ROM and the new MIUI).

[Q] OTA update on stock ROM, but custom recovery

Good morning, all:
I just got my HTC One the other day and, in the process of transferring content from my Galaxy SIII, I rooted and installed CWM recovery, but kept the stock ROM because I liked the change from what I'd been using on the SIII (CM).
Unfortunately, in the last day or so, an OTA update was released for the One and, as I found out (and you likely know), you can't perform OTA updates with a custom recovery. The constant notifications are enough to make me want to update, besides the obvious benefits of increased stability.
I was wondering if I could flash the recovery found in the [Recovery] Stock HTC One post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2158763) to the device so that I could update? Also, would this break my root/superuser? The device is a TELUS model (if they differentiate by carrier) with software no° 1.29.661.5.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

UPDATE - 2:38 PM
------------------------------
Hey, guys:
Sorry for all of this noise, I figured things out and wanted to delete this thread, but can't seem to do that.
For those of you experiencing similar issues, who followed mike1986.'s Complete Flashing Guide post, the process for restoring your stock Recovery image to do OTA updates is actually super simple:
- Connect your phone to your computer and pull the backup you did of your device before flashing the custom recovery image.
- Open the folder and move the Recovery.img file to your Android SDK folder.
-Boot your device in fastboot mode (like you did during unlocking bootloader - power off the device and turn it on using power + vol down buttons and select "FASTBOOT")
-Open up command prompt ( Start > Run > type cmd and hit enter ). The window that appears is called Command Prompt. <click here to see the image>
- Navigate to [your SDK directory] (type in Command Prompt: cd c:\[directory]).
- In the Command Prompt type following command: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Using this method, you could flash your stock recovery back onto the device, perform the OTA, then flash the custom Recovery.img back onto your device all in the span of 5 minutes.
This is probably standard stuff for most people on this forum.
[DELETED]
Could you please post your custom recovery?
I need to do the same procedure as yours, and I am currently on same fw, from Telus.
Many thanks.

Sure thing, millicent.
Tried attaching it to the post, but that wasn't working so here's a DropBox link: HTC One Stock Recover (1.29.661.5). Happy OTA updating!
I've tried this, but the OTA update package won't install. Flashing the Recovery.img isn't enough.

I assume you're running a stock ROM, so did you delete any stock apps(i.e bloatware)? If so, you will need to NAND restore to a stock backup or get those apps back. First thing an official OTA does is check the signatures on all the files it'd expecting to be on the device and if any come back wrong or missing, update aborts.

So I was just wondering, if i install the bloatware/default apps back manually (using the .apk files) and flash the recovery back to stock. Will I be able to do an OTA update Without loss of data? If that´s possible, I wil flash the custom bootloader back after performing the OTA update.
Guys, thanks for helping me out. I've done an OTA update without any data loss, you can read about it in thishttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42122514#post42122514 Thread.

My HTC One came with s-off already?

Hi,
After i've been playing with samsung phones i decided to buy an HTC One, but today i started to follow some guides in order to unlock bootloader, root and s-off my device.
My surprise when i pu the phone in bootloader mod is already unlocked and s-off, however when i put in recovery mod the screen was dark and then showed an image with a phone and a red triangle inside i presume that there is no recovery installed and the phone is not rooted.
Here's the bootloader information of my device:
***UNLOCKED***
M7_UL PVT SHIP S-OFF RH
CID-HTC__304
HBOOT-1.56.0000
RADIO-4A.23.3263.28
OpenDSP-v32.120.274.0909
OS-4.19.401.9
eMMC-boot 2048MB
Feb 7 2014,01:06:01.0
I need your help. What am i suppose to do now? Root my device and install a recovery?
Thx
Technically, there *is* a recovery, just a stock recovery (the red triangle is normal with the stock recovery).
With S-Off, you can do anything. Of course a good place to start would be to flash a custom recovery.

If you want to root just flash latest twrp recovery (2.6.3.3 or 2.6.3.4). enter recovery then exit and you'll be prompted to root your phone.
You'll be prompted with something similar to this:

swipe to install then when the phone reboot, go in your app drawer and complete the root installation by opening the SuperSu app.
either ''play'' or ''twrp'' methos should work with s-off.

open a cmd prompt from your adb/fastboot folder

Yes, with s-off you can flash either a sense based custom rom or gpe custom rom. Be sure to use a rom intended for M7_U or M7_UL. Don't flash any sprint rom (WLS). Also make a Nandroid backup of your phone trough twrp before you flash a rom and save a copy on your computer.

Your firmware version is 6.09.401.5 and you have used a reset rom version 3.62.401.1 hence why something went wrong when you have attempted to install the ota update.
Now to fix it you'll need to flash twrp recovery 2.6.3.3
push the 6.09.401.5 rom to your phone internal storage
install the rom
flash the 6.09.401.5 stock recovery
so we'll go step by step, this will be easier for you I think.
So download twrp 2.6.3.3 from here.
Save it at the same place where "minimal adb and fastboot" is installed on your computer. Should be C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot.
make sure your phone is booted in bootloader / fastboot usb mode
start "minimal adb and fastboot" (start --> Programs --> Minmal adb and fasboot --> minimal adb and fastboot)
type:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.3-m7.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
then in bootloader, select "recovery" to boot in twrp recovery.
Reply when these steps are done.

in twrp select "wipe" then "format data"
when format data is done, reboot the recovery. You can reboot the recovery using this command:
Code:
adb reboot recovery
or by holding power and vol down and select "recovery" from the bootloader menu
Download this rom (this is the stock rom for your version) like the recovery, save it in C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot
When the download is completed and with your phone booted in twrp main menu, type this command:
Code:
adb push One_6.09.401.5_odexed.zip /sdcard
this will transfer the stock rom to your internal storage. Your command prompt will be unresponsive for a few minutes (5-10 min). When you'll see a message in the command prompt saying "X KB/s (Y bytes in Z seconds)", this mean your rom was successfully transferred to your internal storage.
in twrp main menu, select "install" and browse your phone storage to find "One_6.09.401.5_odexed.zip" then swipe to flash the rom.
Data Format Complete
E:Unable to mount '/cache'
is everything all right?
and u said
adb push One_6.09.401.5_odexed.zip /sdcard
but HTC doesnt have a sdcard, but i shouldnt be worried about that since its just a name for a folder?
@alray
okay i did everything, I didnt reboot yet. Can u please tell me how can i install stock recovery so i can install OTA updates?
And as for thanks on forum, can i click thanks on every single of your posts, or there is such restriction about them like one for topic or something?
im not sure if i should wipe cache after flashing rom, so iam waiting with reboot ;c

exactly, your internal storage is an emulated sdcard not a real sdcard. /sdcard is linked to /data/media/0 so when you push a file to /sdcard it will in reality push it to /data/media/0.

Yes, flashing a recovery, stock or custom, is done using the same commands

fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader

Yes thats what I'm doing every time. You will loose root after an ota update, but all you need to do is to reflash twrp and apply root.

Your issue wasn't caused by root privileges, it was caused by a software/firmware mismatch. You shouldn't have any issue like this one because you have rooted. Anyway you can always use twrp to make a backup of your phone before modding it so if something goes wrong, you just have to restore the backup using twrp and your phone will be back in the same state it was before.

Needs a bit more explaining I think.
I don't know why, but at first, fastboot didn't work for me.
I tried many things found on the internet, many guides, many drivers but every time, while my device was on, my computer could detect it and interact with it using cmd and "adb" commands, but every time I rebooted to bootloader, and selected "fastboot", nothing worked. The drivers wouldn't install correctly and even "fastboot devices" wouldn't work. My phone was on Hboot 1.54, and my computer was on a Windows 8.1 x64
I then installed Windows 7 on my laptop and had no problems installing the drivers and flashing the firmware.zip using fastboot.
Today I wanted to try again to make fastboot work with my butterfly (hboot 1.57 now) on my windows 8.1 PC, and...it worked ! I'm no expert, but I guess Hboot 1.54 wasn't "compatible" with win 8.1, whereas hboot 1.57 has no problems.
Just wanted to share this here, in case it can help someone else in the same situation.

The MD5 file is just a checksum which lets you verify that the download went without a problem.
