Rooting 11.3.2.1 - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to root a friend's kindle fire hd 7" 2013 running 11.3.2.1... the problem is I do not have a factory cable. I can't seem to find anywhere that explicitly states that one is 100000000% REQUIRED to get to fastboot for this device, but if anyone can clear that up for me that would be great. I'm under the impression once I get to fastboot, then this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50985251&postcount=347 will work...
Any help would be fantastic.

Right- I understand the steps that I am supposed to do, and I actually ended up with the "11.3.2.1-root" zip you linked... I guess I just linked the wrong post.
Well without this factory cable I guess this won't be going anywhere. Oh well. Thanks for the reply.

you can build youself one, search for it, just wire the red cable with the unused pin on the back at the micro usb side
(i holded it during the flash in my left hand because I have not soldered it )

I might try it- I do have a lot of microusb cables floating around, but I also just made a realization - there doesn't appear to be any custom roms for the 2013- soho (all appear to be for 2012-tate). If I saw some for 2013 then I'd probably just say what the heck and try to make a cable but unfortunately that's a pretty big deal breaker.

That shouldn't matter, I've done the fastboot commands with both Moto and Samsung usb cables. I'm gonna guess that you having the usual permission/wrong fastboot problem. I can tell you first hand that Linux, Root, and SnapDragon Fasboots have never once failed me for any flash command (that's supported by our phone). I've never done adb from Windows, but from what I understand ya gotta right click the snap-fastboot.exe and enable Administrator Permissions for it.
To make life much easier for you, download the correct fastboot from Batakang and overwrite any fastboot.exe on your system with it if this is your only android phone that uses fastboot commands and do the permissions crap for all of them (how many can there actually be ).
If its not the permission/fastboot crap then reinstall any Motorola or Android driver you have. For some reason for some people they just quit working properly and need a reinstall...that's just proper Windows maintenance .
/I've always believed that Windows wasn't named after its windowed desktop, but after actual windows because, like real windows, if it breaks its just easier to install a new one versus fixing the old...I mean, yeah you can get a crack or a star filled, but ya gotta be covered by insurance (pc warranty) or cough up the $$$...And, just like glass windows, if you don't know how ya gotta pay to install the new one.
//Kids, learn how to use tools, some basic home maintenance skills, and enough auto mechanic skills to at least do a complete tune up, a brake job, and install an alternator\bolt on engine parts.
so i feel like a tard was battery close to dead problem :-x just outta curiousity when flashing i get to step 17 flash "system img" then phone returned fail phone connected
take it no one has a clue ?

I don't, not for Windows anyways. I've had that error, but it was because I typed fastboot flash instead of snap-fastboot flash...what I rename them to so they don't conflict with the Android SDK from the AUR.
I didn't realize you had replied....but yeah, I've had my low battery flash scare. After 2 days the Bravo would not take a charge, wall, pc, car, and I was desperate. For me I ended up taping speaker wire to some razr (flip phone) batteries and wiring them to the connection prongs on my Bravo, put actual Bravo battery in and flashed the sbf... it worked
If possible, do this all on Linux...doesn't really matter the distro or version. You'll hardly have any errors or issues with our fastboot as root on Linux.
While it won't help you now, I've been looking into Manjaro's system builder tool to make a Manjaro system with adb and fastboot setup, various programs I use...basically the crap I use on a daily basis to make an installer for myself so I can install my custom system wherever I need it. It would also be worth sharing cause it would be an easy way for a new Linux user to get started and not have to follow multiple mile long guides on xda just to install a bunch of crap to get started.

[VIDEO] How to root/flash a Chromecast with FlashCast

Due to the confusion on how to setup flashcast and install pwnedcast, I decided to make a tutorial Video. Sorry for the crappy video/audio, I need a new webcam.
NOTE: this will work on a chromecast that has not been setup yet, and we recommend rooting a device before setup to prevent any accidental OTA update.
Files Download Link: http://pdl.team-eureka.com/other/Chromecast-Root.zip
Hope this helps!
also, bonus points for anyone who finds the "teaser" in the video.
Thanks

Good Job. I was actually going to do the same tonight, guess I don't need to do it!
I also think it could be mentioned that you could just flash Flashcast and Pwned before ever setting up your chromecast (eliminates the risk of connecting a brand new Chromecast to the internet and getting the update). I just tested it out on a Chromecast I got for a family member.
Sweet! I have been trolling YouTube for the last 1/2 hour looking for just this video with no luck. Came back here and "poof", here it is!
I have 2 Chromecasts that have been sitting untouched since release day, waiting for a comprehensive tutorial. Thank you!!

True, forgot to mention that in the video. Will add to OP, thanks.
Thanks for making video. I had a hard time the first time I did this. Did not know when, and after the first boot that it auto formated for me and I needed to upload the eureka zip file. For it to complete

What are the benefits of a rooted chrome cast
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
This might be OT but under the heading of what a CC noobie might do wrong!
I have a new CC but waiting on the OTG cable. I'm getting ready so I didn't have a standard USB flash drive but had a USB/xD adapter and a 1GB xD card on which I put Flashcast. After watching the video and the caution about trying to open the USB drive I decided to redo it. Win32DiskImager errors out at 97%, I forget the error number and Windows can't format it either! I was able to put it back into the camera and format it.
Just wondering if say someone tries Flashcast only to find out that they have one of the new bootloaders(which could be me too), what do they do with that USB flash drive or what will format it now? Or is it just something to do with the adapter that I used?

The biggest benefit is you get to keep your unlocked bootloader, and gain the ability to flash mods such as Kyocast to get around google's app whitelisting.

If you flash flashcast to a jump drive, and try to boot it on a chromecast that is already updated, it would stay on a black screen on your TV, and the jump drive would never format. You can just re-format the jump drive from your computer to return it to being a normal jumpdrive.
question, the other end of the OTG cable is plugged into your computer? where do chromecast get its power?

yes, I was using my computer to power the OTG. you can also use the stock power adapter if you want.

That's if your able to succeed but if it fails do to having the wrong bootloader? Are you still able to format from your PC or right after using Win32Diskimager to put the bin file on the USB drive, are you able to format, etc. then? Maybe using Win32DiskImager the second time corrupted the memory card??
in either case I must have the 3 way OTG? im asking this because I have the normal micro usb > female USB otg, there isnt a 3rd cable out to power the device. Appreciate your reply.

Well if it fails to boot due to a locked bootloader, it will not format. At that point even formatting it yourself (which would break flashcast) would not make it work as the bootloader is preventing it from booting.

For flashing the chromecast you need a powered OTG cable, but some people have reported success using a powered USB hub. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2465642

It's not the process or lack of completing that I questioned, it's the condition of the USB flash drive if it fails. It might be better to ask, if Win32DiskImager is used to place the BIN file on a USB flash drive and it isn't used to flash a CC or fails to, how or with what is used to formatted it for reuse?

The flash drive can certainly be reformatted. I've seen reports of Windows being unable to format it using the standard explorer menu option for some reason, which is a bug in Windows, IMO. The format operation is exactly the same regardless of the contents of the drive, and Windows shouldn't be looking at the contents at all. Nevertheless, it doesn't work for some reason, so what you need to do is go into the Disk Management application as described here, delete all the partitions on the drive, and then create a new FAT32 partition which takes up all the space. (If someone is willing to create a guide with screenshots, I'd appreciate it, as I don't currently have access to a Windows machine.)

Un-Root Back to Stock

I am having a ridiculous amount of trouble with my kindle. I had rooted it and was swapping through roms quite frequently trying to find something I liked. Somewhere along the way something got messed up. I just want to wipe it completely and start fresh. No root. I have looked for several hours on the web and cant seem to find anything. I need a barney style breakdown step by step with all download links and everything. I get the basics but the terminology gets confusing. Thanks in advance.

You need to download the SDK package as well. Here is a video tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaNM-lt_aHw

Why are you using Kindle Fire utility? Do you wish to turn your Kindle into a paperweight? KFU is for first generation only. You need a fastboot cord. Hold the powerbutton down on the KIndle for 20 seconds until the Kindle powers off? Plug the fastboot cord into a USB port and then into the Kindle. The Kindle should power on and show fastboot on the screen. Is this what it does?
Edit: Or are you using a first generation Kindle and posting in a Kindle Fire HD 7 thread?

[Q] Kindle Fire 2 running 10.4.8

Hello folks,
I posted this in the wrong forum earlier. Im a bit confused and need some direction.
I want to unleash my KF2 to full android tablet, So...I know i need to root it, I want to go with KitKat style rom but want 100% reliability (so will go with the most stable platform), I have been looking at the guides and how to pages for a week now and there is a lot on conflicting or different information. Can someone point me towards a guide or someone who can help me please.
My KF2 is stock with sideloaded apps at present its software version is 10.4.8 (which i can find no information about regarding root or other hacks)
any information will be gratefully received.
Many thanks
Andy

root with kindle fire first aid, think it also has a option to install twrp and 2nd bootloader for you, not sure how reliable that is considering you are going to have to downgrade the bootloader and stuff, for some reason fireflash never had kf2 support added to it, which i find odd considering it uses the same method to do it, minus the fact it needs a different bootloader. Long story short, root with kffa, then either use kffa's option to install twrp and 2nd bootloader(if it has it) or use the tutorial for your device in the android development section made by hashcode. You must downgrade your bootloader though if you do it manually, just a heads up so you don't get stuck with a redscreen that only a fastboot cable will fix.
Thanks very much

Just to summerise,
I root with KFFA,
I install TWRP,
Then a 2nd boot loader,
Then I can do custom Rom,
In a nutshell oh 1 more thing, what's the best Rom to go for and at what point do I need to downgrade my bootloader ? Cheers

O you don't need a fastboot cable, fastboot cables are only to kick it into fastboot mode when bricked, you can get into fastboot from a working kindle with commands such as
Code:
adb reboot bootloader

you could still do it all you need to do is run a simple "adb reboot bootloader" from a command prompt while cd'd into the kffa directory. Thats the equivalent of what it wants to do.
I'll give it a go, you have been a great help, thank you, I owe you one......if you need to know anything about cars or mechanical engineering I can sort you out lol

Sweet those are 2 fields I'm always interested in, I took a lot of autotech courses back in highschool because I have an old 75 corvette that sat in the driveway for about 10 years. Already replaced all the brake calipers, master cylinder, rebuilt the carburetor, and did the most ghetto fix to the tachometers circuit board to fix a blown circuit you will ever see. xD
I'll stop digressing before there's a huge paragraph about this, long story short it still isn't drive able yet because the transmission needs some serious fixing (some kinda vacuum issue makes the engine die when going into drive unless you rev it a lot while doing so, and occasionally it blows ATF all over the place from the dipstick/fill hole, was told by my teacher a while back it is probably a blocked vent or something, don't remember the term right now because its been awhile since I looked into it, but I digress again)

ok i'm still here to help, also now i recognize who pm'd me the other day *facepalm* sorry i've been gettign on xda like right before i fall asleep lately because of a frustrating project i'm working on thats a bit above my knowledge. Rather than donwload the big sdk, look for a tut made by me in my threads (theres not many threads i created) and it has a zip with adb and fastboot in it and thats it. Way smaller and easier to use, just extract it to a directory and then shift right click the directory and hit " new command windows here" and you can run the adb and fastboot commands. Also drivers are in my signature. They are the kind that you right click the device in the device manager and hit update driver on to use. Any questions feel free to ask.

There is no point in doing this if my computer can't connect to my kindle

I tried to install the recovery mode on my rooted kindle.
When I tried to do go into it, the Logo pops up for 3 sec and then disappears. Then it does it again in a endless loop.
Is there a way to fix this?
Please reply as soon as possible.
Thanks!

Looks like you missed the stack override while installing 2nd bootloader and TWRP. Buy a fastboot cable and use Kindle Fire First Aid to restore stock recovery. Then use FireFlash or my Flasher to install TWRP.

Can you make a step tutorial? I just don't want to mess up again.
Is there a way to make a fastboot cable?

Sure,I'll write you one once I get home. And it's possible to make one by soldering pin 1 to pin 4 and wrapping it up,but I recommend buying one from http://shop.teamblackhat.info
With the fast boot cable, am I just using it to make it in fastboot mode?
I think I can do that without the cable

I have managed to make the FastBoot words to appear but not sure if anything is actually happening. I have not tried the programs you listed yet.
Do the programs you listed work on the kindle stuck on the logo screen. I have tried another program and it did nothing.
Fastboot mode doesn't do anything. It's a mode. It's a means for you to interact with the device.

Ok, I'm sorry. I can't wait any longer. Is there a place other than amazon (my kindle is rooted) that I can send my kindle.
Low Cost?
Can I send it to amazon? I don't have any warranty anymore but will they accept it?

Sorry, been busy for the past few days.
If you have fastboot cable and a booting kindle, you can restore it at home. To do this, use the fastboot cable to boot into fastboot mode and use the Kindle Fire First Aid to go stock. You can also use the Kindle Fire System Restore Tool to restore it to 7.2.3

Many people have gone to great lengths to write some great tutorials one here. Why don't you try reading them a few times and then give it a shot? Put some work into it, you won't regret it.

I really just want to know if I can send it to amazon. I don't have a warranty so that stuff does not matter. Will they accept it is the question I want answered. (I also have not seen any tut on fixing the bootloop)
I also think it might be a battery problem. I have seen people have similar problems and people saying the new bootloader turns on a bootloop when the battery is low. The only way to fix it is to get the original charger (mine broke) or charge it at a shop.

Sounds like a waste of money to me. They may accept it, but by the time you pay for shipping & labor, buy a used one for < $80

I really don't care how much as long as they can fix it. Does anyone know for sure if they will accept it.
If not, is there any other people/companies will fix it.
I think you're barking up the wrong tree. Folks at xda aren't going to have the information you're looking for. Contact amazon directly.

Trying to make this as free as possible.
No, you must have a fastboot cord.
