When I flash a ROM is there anyway to make sure my telephone stays working. And most of my basic stuff keeps running? I have done 2 separate nandroid backups is that all I'll need to have? Any and all suggestions, advice, help, or just plain instructs are greatly appreciated!

For "major" ROM upgrades, like changing ROM from one to another version (stock to custom..), or CM7.0 to 7.1, etc. it is recommended to do a phone wipe. This means all your contacts, apps etc. will be gone. The sdcard will not be wiped.
What you can do about this:
- Enable sync for your contacts and calendars. This will most likely happen automatically when setting up your Google account on the phone.
- Install a backup program like Titanium Backup. This can backup stuff like apps, app settings, wifi passwords, contacts, etc. Then after you installed the new ROM you can easily restore your apps+settings, etc.
- As I understand, nandroid backups will backup your whole phone. So in case you have a 'bad flash', you can restore the whole old ROM and data. But I think you want to transfer your data to a newer ROM version, so this is not what you want to keep data.
Hi,
general question about upgrading a new firmware.
When I do that and I got a "wipe" firmware, I usually wipe and reinstall everything and reconfigure all my apps.
It takes a while but, as seasoned windows user, I know this is the best way to have a clean and full speed installation so to avoid "registry" cluttering.
Is this applicable also to Android? Or using Nandroid or Titanium I can restore my apps with "messing up" with my shiny new firmware?
It is quite quick to put your credentials on facebook or foursquare but all the word learnt by swype or all rebuild all the folders structure is taking a while...
Thanks
Sergio
Using Titanium Backup, you can just backup user apps and data, and leave system apps alone. Then when you upgrade to a new firmware (I recently went from KK5 to KL8) you can use your Titanium Backup just to restore the user apps and data you backed up, and leave the system apps and data alone. That way you'll have only the system app data from your new ROM, but all the user apps and data from your old one.
When I flashed my new ROM, I went ahead and selected to restore all user and system apps and data. Of course I can't tell you how my phone's performance compares to if I hadn't done so, but I can tell you that my phone is faster (because of the new code, I'm sure) than it was before, and I'm having absolutely no issues whatsoever.
I do my ROM backup using ROM Manager by CWM, app + data backup using TBP and EFS folder using kTool. It always works well.
In one of the stock LA1 firmware threads in the dev section (stock LA1 is a wipe firmware) a user has reported success by restoring his data partition from a previous Nandroid backup.
Haven't tried it myself, as I agree with your approach of starting from a "clean" slate. Android doesn't have a registry, but the DBDATA partition could be considered similar?
I prefer the clean slate approach, but after I instructed my Custom Dictionary for one month and organized all my apps in nice folders I wanted to understand if there are risks here.
It is not clear for me what are also the information related to a certain fw that an apps saves... is that possibile for instance to do a restore in ICS of a backup done in Gingerbread?

I have a stock (not rooted) Note running KK2.
I will be updating this recently posted LB2 and hopefully improve my battery life amoung other things.
Question:
What good backup program (free or pay) should I use to backup my Note prior to updating to the (non-wipe) LB2?
Things important to me in considering which backup prog to use:
Important:
Network stuff (i.e. wireless networks, APNs)
Contacts
programs that came installed with my device (Video Maker, love this)
Personal media (pictures, videos, ringtones)
Not (as) imporatant:
Apps I've added since I had the device (I think I've added 2 or 3 apps from Android Market which I don't think would be very hard to to re-install)
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks

Since you say you are in stock-non rooted,There is no app i know which is upto the mark and since you say you dont need apps downloaded from market,I'll tell you some tips.
1.Its better to jot down your apn, network settings. It must not be a great problem.
2.If you are going to upgrate from stock to stock you can use kies to backup your contact, videos, musics etc...
3.The apps which came installed when you bought the device are standard and will be included in every stock rom released by samsung/network provider. But your app data will be deleted when flashing roms which you cant backup unless you root your device.
4.Your personal data like photos, musics, videos, files on your memory card should be intact but it is adviced that you back it up by connecting your phone to pc in mass storage mode and copy the content of your sd card to your computer.
Now you are good to go and enjoy flashing.Be sure to read the instructions for flashing the rom. Finally hit thanks button if I have helped you

But you cant backup app data.So if you restore your back up your app will respond like newly downloaded one.Since he said he has 2-3 apps only its better to install from market itself

If you flashing non wipe, you are likely no need to worry, as it won't erase anything, But i advised to have backup, if anything goes wrong
- There is my backup for non rooted device to backup installed app(no data will b saved, e.g. level of games, as u r non rooted)
- APN usually you will get automatically, but still you can write on paper, setting-wireless n network-mobile networks-access point name- open your APN n simply write on paper. That you have to add back if needed.
- contact - option - import/export - export to SD
- Media won't be erase, even you flash wipe ROM, it remains saved in Int memory/SD card depend on you selected(but remains intact in either case)
- preinstalled stuff will remain as it according new ROM (usually not changing major at least video maker will remain in any ROM)

I think you had mentioned in one your earlier posts regarding this new LB2 f/w that whether needed or not, you do a full wipe before all upgrades to ensure optimum performance.
Would you recommend that I do that in this situaton, even thiough this is a non wipe f/w?
Thanks!

I'd always recommend a full wipe, unless specified otherwise by the custom rom developer. That way you get a proper fresh base with no leftover debris from the old rom.

Yes, I always prefer clean update. You are non rooted, then it is more painful, but this is the one important reason, i do prefer to have root.

thnx Dr..i have taken backup using titanium backup pro, exported contacts in ext sd card and will backup msgs using sms backup ad restore..i want to do factory reset cos i mite be installing any custom roms...once i installed custom rom, whch option i use in TB pro? also how to backup the TB pro?
To backup - as i said earlier - Batch - backup all user app+sys data
To restore
batch - restore user app
if you have taken contact n SMS with other methos, restore it from there
otherwise you can find green colored text for contact storage, contacts in TB, you can restore it from there too.
Backup your whole efs folder with rootexplorer and copy to computer Cwm and titanium backup dont do this. Learned the hard way

Check out My Backup (free trial) and My Backup Pro (paid version) by Rerware, available on the market. Backs up apps and data on non-rooted phones. It may or may not do what you need, but it's worth a look.

To install the last Darklord rooted ROM you have to wipe everything.
To restore all the App (Viber conversation) and settings (Wifi pwd, email account, contacts. SMS...) is sufficient the Backup done with PC Companion or I have to do a Backup with a specific program?
Thanks

You can try with native Backup & Restore app from Sony.

First of all, if you have a Google account, your Wi-Fi, contacts, and some other settings are already backed up to the cloud and will be restored automatically. SMS and app settings are different.
PC Companion backups are weird. I tried them a while ago - couldn't figure out how to restore. If you're so worried about particular apps, do a dirty install (wipe only /cache and Dalvik cache), then backup your SMS and all apps that you'd like using the new version of Sony's Backup & Restore app in 4.3. Then reboot back into recovery, wipe /data, /cache, and Dalvik cache, then install the ROM, then boot and do the basic setup. Once Android is finished restoring everything it could automatically, restore the backup from the Backup & Restore app. Just note that if you receive any SMSes before completing the restore, you'll lose them. Thus, it's best to put the phone into Airplane Mode and connect to Wi-Fi in order to complete the restoration.

I don't know about PC Companion, but I use Titanium Backup to backup/restore all apps, as well as bluetooth pairings, saved WiFi connections, user dictionaries, etc. It also backs up contacts, sms, system settings, etc., but I rather use Super SMS Backup and Restore for handling SMS and Call Logs, Google Account for handing contacts, and hardly ever restore system settings, which I don't recommend unless you're updating to the same OS version, otherwise you might get errors.
I've been doing this for the past 4 years, and have the exact same data with me that has gone through 3 different phones, so I know it's 100% reliable.
I tried TiataniumBackup, but it doesn't work because my phone is not rooted.
Unfortunately I alreday did the update when Sony asked for it before discovering that is not possible to root 4.3.
Try helium
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup
I believe it uses the adb backup method and doesn't need root
I will give a try to Helium
Thanks
Helium doesn't work, because it want the phone set to PTP, but when I connect it to the computer it suddenly automatically change to MTP.
I use a Mac
Any suggestion?
Thanks

For SMS backup you can use this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&hl=en
For Apps & App Data you can use Titanium Backup: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=en
Other stuff just copy paste to computer.
As far as I'm aware its only main data that is wiped yeah? All my music, videos ect will stay?
