Like the title says, it's basically like vGet, allows you to play embedded videos in some websites. Compatibility is not as good but the app is free and will probably improve.
In order to get it working correctly i had to select the "cast icon" inside the app and THEN, try to play a video. There's a small search like button to search for embedded video, if it doesn't start playing immediately. You should also try to select full screen mode, if the embedded video allows it.
Seems to work well, I like it.
Doesn't have the non-Chromecast features that vGet does, but if you don't want those, this just seems to work.
The disconnect doesn't work for me, but as you say, it's new.
Web link at the Play Store leads to the help page and you can contact the dev from there. That makes it all even easier.
I've chatted with the dev about the disconnect, he's using a Google library for that and will discuss with them.
That explains why this isn't the only app with the problem.
Nice guy, patient, and very responsive.
I've played with the app some more and I really like it.
If it's casting and you exit the app, it will recover where it was last, including the player timeline.

I think that the kindest way to describe Google is that genius comes at a price.
And yes, I sent the reply from that same account.
It's just the same old problem that MS now has...
At some point you just get too big to be able to handle proper support because there is no way to know who needs to get the report and even if you get it to a department who might know something about the problem, their stuff is good and some other arm of the company caused it and they have no clue who that is!
In this case, let's hope that they listen to the dev.
It's evidently not something that hits 100% of the time. My report was new to the dev here.
Anyway, I hope that Flash or flv containers get support at some point.
I rarely have a use for this sort of thing but would use it more if I could cast some of the news pages I come across and that's usually for wanting better sound.
Meanwhile, I keep my headset handy while I surf.
I did try an anime site that offered HD mp4 content (ad-supported, mainstream, not piracy, as a note to any passing mods) and it worked great. Some of the grandkids enjoy that, me too really, and the Netflix catalog is limited there. That site wants to open new tabs for videos and this app made it easy to keep track of where I was, tabs are supported.

It depends on which "THEY" the dev gets to talk to...Was it the CCast OS team that screwed up? Was the SDK maintenance team? or was it Google Services team that changed something to break the system? I bet none of those teams even live in the same city let alone talk to each other much.
And don't hold your breath waiting for Flash or FLV anytime soon.
Even Adobe is refusing to support it anymore...Until everyone gets onboard for HTML5 Specs flash is going to be left out in the cold especially as far as CCast is concerned. I'm not even sure it can be transcoded properly.

In addition to mp4 files, Kissanime has flv files wrapping H.264/AAC according to MX Player so for some of these I think it's a container issue rather than codecs. I suppose that the H.264 profiles could be different though.
Both of these are from the same site, the 480 one is flv, the second is an mp4 that casted.
Anyway, I don't expect flv support from anyone for all the reasons discussed. Just tossing out a wish.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about this and I realize this is really a Chrome issue but perhaps we can work it out. No one I know in person can get an AVI file to play in chrome and hence cast to Chromecast.
Here is a 20mb sample file.
Can you download it or stream it in Chrome ? If you can tell us your setup.
Personally I have DIVX and VLC installed and it won't play. It just downloads.
Try it and let us know
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1330792/Sample Video.avi
It just dls from dropbox, haven't tried messing with it locally because dropbox is really slow right now lol.
What happens if you rename it to .mp4 or open it in chrome with ctrl+o?
Whatever you do it just downloads.
you can always use plex
I don't really know what that means but I've read performance is not good.
OK so i just uploaded an avi file to my google drive and played it in google viewer, casted in with the chrome extension and it streams flawlessly to my chromecast!
Well that's interesting. Worked for me also but not a very practical solution but it probably tells us something important.

i don't know where you see performance is not good... plex is fine for me but YMMV
(i don't actually know that it works with avis because i only use x264 mp4s or mkvs but it should work)
Well thanks so much, given that I already said I heard performance was bad I guess I already knew that much. Anything else to contribute ?

You can try not contradicting yourself in your post... just because you heard performance was bad doesn't mean it will perform bad for you.
What do you lose by trying?
Why do you feel it necessary to pick at a post rather than contribute?
For the comprehension challenged, I know what Plex is, I just don't know how to set it up our if it's worth it.

I am contributing, I'm using plex and it's working swimmingly, that's my contribution.
It seems like you're the one picking at MY post.
If you wish to wait for another solution be my guest but the only other solution will be waiting for some media player (like VLC) to integrate a casting option...
So you know about Plex, you've been given it's website, so how about reading the how-to?! (Or are you going to have a snotty answer about that, too?)
As to slow, that depends entirely on what you're running it on. As it can run fine on a Raspberry PI it obviously doesn't require huge resources. It's run very well in the background of my five year old Mac without issue.
But I'm sure this answer won't be to your satisfaction either. Or maybe you'll learn please & thank you, never too late...

I will check out Plex, I promise. But my actual question is how to play AVI files directly in Chrome directly since I can't have Plex in every scenario. I'm confused why some people say it works and many others don't.

plex is very versatile, i can't imagine a scenario where it wouldn't be viable.
i only push this because as far as i can tell it's impossible to just add support for **** inside of chrome without patching in support in the chromium source...
id love it if someone can correct me and tell us how to play avis and ac3 audio in chrome natively though!

It's really odd that it will play from Drive and some people claim it works.
As for Plex. 3 main problem cases come to mind
1} I cannot install it on my work computer that I travel with
2} Someone wants to show a video from their laptop. I can't tell them to install Plex
3} I tried to install on my laptop at home and it's not working. It will not play videos
There's a lot of reasons Native chrome would be better.
I should also note WMV doesn't work either. Plays in the browser but black on the Chromecast.

I haven't actually tried but it seems like Drive has its own media player, that would explain why it works with drive...
As for your first two problems you have completely valid points but I'm sure your third issue is resolvable with more information.
I don't suggest plex as a permanent solution but as a temporary workaround.
I expect the issue is that AVI is a *container*: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_Video_Interleave
Content inside can be encoded using numerous formats, some of which are likely supported directly by the Chromecast device (if it has the proper codecs), in other cases there may be external transcoding for the Chromecast happening (possibly GDrive is doing some behind-the-scenes optimization like it does for PDFs uploaded as books.)
In any case we're in early days yet, doubtless there are dedicated Chromecast streamers & optimizers in progress on many a dev's plate.
I agree on the container but I am using very common one's DIVX for example and testing with various one's. It's possible some obscure one's will work but that seems counter intuitive.
I do agree that this will be made to work at some point soon but this actually appears to be a Chrome problem not a Chromecast problem.
Possibly, or a Chrome + specific DIVX implementation issue.
The truth is DIVX is a commercial, patent-encumbered, codec. There are several slightly different implementations of varying legitimacy. It is entirely possible that some variants, or even specific implementations (this DLL vs. that DLL) are more & less Chrome compatible.
Also, for those that might be unaware, I'll note that both AVI & DIVX have been widely superseded by other, more efficient & versatile encodings. There is a great deal of legacy material out there, but more modern files are typically MP4 or Matroska using H.264 compression.

Bare wit me I'm tired and going to bed in a few min. I started playing with chrome extensions and turns out Plex works pretty great.
Heres what you do in a nutshell. if you use plex already skip this.
1. download install plex media server and set it up using folders with your videos to add to the que.
2. the above might just work with Myplex.com but I have both. So get a my plex account and link your plex server/files to it.
3. install the plex chrome extension.
4. go to myplex account and your library. que up a video and start playing, cast it to chrome then hit full screen on the plex player. your audio and video will automatically size and cast to the tv. how awesome is that?

no it won't work over tablet as of now. really the op is only making people aware that it is possible to stream all your local content regardless of codec through the browser. then it's just casting that tab, it works alright but is nowhere near flawless and the limit is 720p.
i am really really hoping that it gets integrated to the app itself, but it doesn't seem to be a top priority for the devs. i do think they will get around to it eventually though.
I just read a report this morning that the Plex devs are optimistic that they're app will provide support soon.

I read the same thing and it appears they are only saying that due to a tweet from last week that they had ordered some. In the plex forums the only thing that a developer has said is that they won't start working on it until they have their devices. i do expect them to add the functionality, but i doubt it will be in the next few weeks. they generally aren't the quickest at adding new features.

Yeah, good to know. I'm still hoping that the developer of MX player decides to update the app. That would solve all local streaming issues. Just connect to LAN on ES File Explorer and then stream the video using MX Player.
I emailed the dev from mxplayer and they said a new app would need to be made. Apparently the app can't support both the chrome and android sdk. I'm not sure how accurate that is maybe they have to look into it a bit more. I think there is some confusion since the sdk for the chromecast is chrome sdk not android.

As was said, tablet apps are different, this is glorified mirroring. it's not perfect. it's more or less a proof of concept. I'm sure if you messed with buffer rate it would probably speed things up a lot. I was up all night and just kind of knocked off my seat when I saw audio reencode on the fly. What's kind of crazy is the plex plugin seems to figure out what you want and tries to do it for you. I don't see how the plugin is resizing when you hit full screen mode It's like it's interfacing with chromecast. Like for example if you try to play a avi by dragging it into chrome you get no audio but if you kick it into plex the audio gets turned off on the pc and put to the tv. I think plex guys should have this golden in a short time. as a fairly long time plex user. almost 2 years on roku. they rarely announce their Dev stuff they just one day release it.

I guess that you mean that you can't find channels in English. The channels loaded by default might not be in English.
The nice thing of Sopcast is that every time there is an important sport event it's streamed via Sopcast, but the links to those events don't appear in the channel list but in some websites.
I will send you a link via PM because I guess I'm not allowed to post it here.

Is there an update on this? It would be great to have casting for sopcast, and I assume now that the SDK is out not too hard to implement.
However, right now Chromecast is mostly US and UK, so not sure if the developer is interested in going that route.
Let's submit a request to their website. The forum is down, but this might work http://sopcast.com/info/contact.html
I might be wrong but I think Sopcast is very unknown in US and not so popular in UK like in other European and Asian countries. So I wouldn't expect to have sopcast support for Chromecast anytime soon...
I tried to contact sopcast developers several times in regards to other issues related to their Android app and I never got a reply. I just know that sopcast developers are from China and it's not open source software.

I think Acestream is very similar to Sopcast and you can use the Chromecast with Bubbleupnp transcoding with Acestream. I have a video showing how to do it.

Most are using it to watch Sports that aren't broadcast locally.
The channels you find in the app itself are very limited, Most of the content available for this app is not listed there and found on the web which then launches the sopcast player to stream it.
chromecast doesn't support live streams format it need to be transcoded
even if you manage to cast chrome cast isn't able to play
the best way i found is this for acestrem which is something similar to sop cast

Yes, I was able to get Sopcast to play on the Chromecast using VLC Transcoding but after transcoding, unfortunately the picture goes from crystal clear on the computer to low quality on the Television. I'm not sure if there is a better Stream Output String than the one I'm using that would transcode a clearer picture. Bubbleupnp transcoding seems a bit better but it always gives me a cannot find Mime-Type error. This is the VLC Stream Output String I am using.

I'm betting for now that the answer is NO...But there may be ways with a Hacked Rooted CCast.
I would be guessing but I expect there to be DRM in those that requires a player that can decode the DRM stream.
Netflix has one for the CCast and until Amazon supports CCast natively I wouldn't expect it to work without direct streaming whatever is on the Tablet screen directly to the CCast via Allcast or some other app that requires a Rooted CCast..

You probably can't, I'm guessing it has some kind of drm.
I meant using vget for sites like putlocker or other storage sites.
What I do is use vget as a dlna server and read it through avia.
Works as a charm MOST times.
For some reason some files won't play through dlna or streaming, and I have to download them with vget
Sent from my EndeavorU using Tapatalk 2
As far as I know...Anything that can only be played through a proprietary portal and their proprietary software (This includes NetFlix, GPlay, and Amazon) are most likely protected with DRM so that they can only be played on their proprietary player.
Which means it is pretty much up to them to incorporate Casting to CCast before you can cast those content items.
No way around it that I can think of.
Netflix activates an app on the CCast that knows how to decode their DRM encryption to play.it's streams.
It's a safe bet GPlay does this too and Amazon will need to create the same system they use.
While we all want Screen Mirroring and Local casting...The truth is the DIAL technology was always meant to be used in the way NetFlix uses it.
Thankfully it is flexible enough that we can get those other things as well.

That makes sense. I just hope that sooner, rather than later, Amazon decides to open up their videos to all the android users...I mean for crying out loud, there is an app for the Wii and nothing for Android yet. Ridiculous.

Yeah, I'm waiting for Amazon too... can already do it on my TV, but my TV's interface is klunky.
I think they will get there but it's a huge company whose software divisions are pretty much focused on their Kindle and Internal stuff.
Unfortunately I don't see them listed under the Dial Registry Database at all right now...
http://www.dial-multiscreen.org/dial-registry/namespace-database
Now that posting could be out of date and it may not mean they aren't working on it just that they haven't registered their Name yet.
They may be waiting for the public release of the SDK. Not sure how close they are with Google as far as development goes to be right on top of it.
I tend to avoid buying any music or content with DRM. I would rather buy the disc and rip it into a DRM free format so I can keep it on the Media Server or NAS.

Totally my attitude as well though recent life changes have pushed me to more of a "wherever, however" methodology, heh. Still won't pay for DRMed stuff as I've been burned too many times in the past, but I'll rent/subscribe for streaming now. Scary. I finally subscribed to Netflix... but mainly because I had the code from Chromecast. Nice bonus, the $8.99 1-month DVD+streaming gift card I bought years ago redeemed for two months of streaming service ($15.98 value). :victory:

Netflix is a pretty good value when you get right down to it. I just signed up for the first time last month as well. Not sure I'll keep it but at the time Plex didn't support CCast! LOL
Truth is I got it as much for my Mother to use the account as for me! I may only keep as long as the MidSeason Break is on because there is nothing but crap on until January! LOL
Netflix is worth every penny imho.
Well, American Netflix. The other ones ain't so hot but if you have an open mind, there's plenty to watch.
If you are more of a 'up to date' guy, then Hulu might be the better alternative.

Split Browser version 2.9.0 (and trial 2.4.0) are Chromecast ready! Give it a try and let us know what you think. Cast away!!

Why didn't your post the playstore links?
Tried the app, couldn't cast anything (hoped for entire tab casting, later saw it should allow only casting various videos on various webpages).
Maybe it works and would appeal to some but it's not really intuitive..
This gives vGet some competition. Thanks for letting us know.

Does this only cast sites of services already compatible with chromecast? I tried it on videos at amctv.com and couldn't get it to work.

Check out the Chromecast description, not all videos will cast, and that makes sense.
Amctv.com videos aren't in a format that the native Chromecast player understands.

Thank you. Tab casting is cool idea, but it will drain the phone battery just like screen mirroring (Miracast). Let's see if we can make that happen with Chromecast.
Added the links to Play store as well.
How long did it take to implement this?

About a month initially with the Chromecast "preview" SDK and then a week to update it after the final SDK was released. It took longer because we didn't use the Cast SDK's companion library. We didn't like the default look and feel of Google's remote control buttons all squished up in one corner of the screen. Hope it helps.
...and with the latest update of vGet and its unusually high cost, this browser looks like a sweet deal. I might give it a better test this time around
Maybe this would be a good community to post a beta on for a version that supports 4.4

Dude, this needs a lot of work. It is pretty much unusable

10 minute trial = license patch
Sweet but 10 minutes champ? That wasn't long enough to get me past stealing it to buying it .
