Unlocator DNS service has announced that their free beta period has now ended, and everyone who signed up is now on a 1-week free trial. After that it will cost $4.95/month. That's the typical price level set by competing services, of which there are at least 20. Some cost as little as $18/yr, and there are a few that are still free for the moment, but they might not all work with the Chromecast since it requires device-specific testing.
Any other free alternative?

Currently SmartDNSProxy and TunnelTo.us, but nothing stays free for long.
Most of the DNS services offer a 1-week free trial per email address.

Thanks OP! I gonna try, Do u know which one is better or which one you use?.. Thanks:good:
I have tested many of the DNS services using their free trials. I think they all work for the basics, although since they don't generally test the Chromecast, you may find that some sites don't work on the Chromecast with some DNS services. Unlocator didn't work with Pandora for me at first either, but they eventually fixed it - it just takes a while to get started, and then you may have to disconnect and reconnect to get it in sync with the Android/iOS app. That's true of some of the DNS services as well.
Tunnelto.us is supposedly in the process of implementing Netflix region switching. I don't know if they will support Netherlands or not. Keep in mind that most of these free services under development tend to move to paid subscription once they get Netflix region switching working, because that requires them to make a serious investment in having paid servers in every supported country.
But personally I currently use usaccess.ca, which cost me $18 for a year on a special promotion. Until now I was using Unlocator for Netflix region switching. USaccess.ca is working on adding that, but until they do I guess that on the very rare occasion that I want to watch anything from a non-U.S. region, it will be time for another 1-week free trial with one of the other services.
I switched to unotelly after unlocator. It certainly seems much better, just more stable and reliable in general. It also has the ability to access two countries content at the same time, so if you are in Europe it is possible to see both UK and US content at the same time without switching settings. They also have a really handy android app for switching Netflix regions very quickly, giving you access to much more content than just US Netflix on it's own.
It's cheaper too.

Unotelly also has a Netflix subtitle blocker, which can be handy if you're watching an English language movie with hardcoded subtitles on a foreign language Netflix.

Hey y'all,
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
I'm excited to share my latest new app in Google Play: CLOUDCAST
Cloudcast lets you play online entertainment from one Android device to another, from anywhere on the planet! Unlike Chromecast, Cloudcast is NOT limited to your Wi-Fi network and you can stream content from ANY website in your device!
The idea was born out of frustration with Chromecast. Google released Chromecast in the summer of 2013 but did not allow independent developers like us to publish apps for it. Since I spent months writing code for their "preview" SDK, I did not want all my work to go to waste. That is when the idea of Cloudcast was born - why not use any Android device as a player instead of Chromecast and not be limited to the Wi-Fi network!
So here it is finally! Hope y'all find the app useful. Let me know what you think. It's a free app, requires latest Google Play & YouTube apps and runs on Android 2.2 or above.
Cheers!

Look around the interwebs. I've seen the MK808 go for as low as $30 recently.
I have had one for about a year now, paid a bit more for it, and am quite happy with it.
Does all the Android stuff well and now even XBMC (13 beta7) runs great on it, using Finless v1.7 ROM and kisses 720p kernel.

Does Google Play work in MK808? I heard others had issues signing in. I'm looking to get one.
The one I used in the Cloudcast demo is Evoke HDI, runs 4.01 but it's a lot slower than even 1.2 GHz phones.
http://evokehdi.com/
I picked it up in Fry's, but no one sells them anymore.
I don't understand this part: ''The free version contains ads and can only cloudcast for 10 minutes at a time.''
10 mins only? then what next, because 10 mins is nothing..
Also can I cast all my movies from a Window PC to my Android stick?..Thanks

Sure, when you use Cloudcast you will be installing in two devices - your phone (the browser/remote) and the Android stick (the media player). The free version is for you to test out Cloudcast in your Wi-Fi network or wireless carrier to make sure it's responsive. If you are casting videos < 10 mins then you won't have to upgrade. After 10 minutes the player will stop to give you an option to upgrade or close. You can still continue to use the browser and play locally or cast again. The browser has no time limits. When you upgrade the 10 time limit for the player is removed and the ads at the bottom of the browser are removed as well. Hope it makes sense.
If you are storing movies in a web server in your Windows PC and if you're able to access them from an Android browser (say http://network_pc/movies/...) then you can play and control the movies from your phone to the Android stick. The PC has to stay on and folders shared for the entire movie.
Instead of a web server you can try shared folders, Cloudcast will work if the URL is accessible by a browser (say file:///network_pc/movies...). My Evoke HDI Android box can see shared folders (without a webserver) and it's also possible with a rooted phone. Hope it helps.

The MK808 has had access to Google Play (and Amazon), whether on Stock or custom ROMs, without any issues. There are JellyBean versions out now, but I have mine still on ICS. Good forum for Android sticks (and not-so-mainstream Tablets) is Freaktab.com. Good place to compare the different Android Sticks and set-top-boxes.

Feels nicer than Cheapcast, but I'm realizing these types of apps can never do paid content, right? I can't do netflix. So these will always be a compliment to chromecast, not replacement.
Or, am I not understanding something? How do I play netlfix, hbo go, hulu plus, etc. I have paying accounts for these. Netflix and HBO Go requires you to play in an app. You can't play in the browser, so that means this won't work, correct?
No paid content yet!

Yes, you're absolutely correct. Cloudcast currently cannot play paid content because there is no user authentication at the player end. Netflix won't play in any mobile browser because of their restrictions. Like you said they want you to use their app!
That said, if the content providers offer a way to authenticate in a web browser (oAuth or login), then we can validate the user at both ends (browser and player). I will look further and see if there are providers that offer that option. Will keep you updated.
I'm sure there are apps out there that "cast" without a Chromecast. If there are enough of us to show content providers the value in offering browser based HTML5 delivery model, then they will soon realize that we all don't need to be locked up in Google's walled garden. This is just a spark and I'm hoping to start a fire!
Calling all indie devs who want to cast without a Chromecast!!
Thank you for this great question. I'll be sure to add this in the FAQs.
I am a Plex newbie. I was wondering if Plex allows the ability to stream broadcast (free) TV. I do not have cable and I do not have satellite. I cannot receive broadcast TV due to my location (distance from TV transmission towers and also local terrain). Is there a way for me to LEGALLY get broadcast TV content (sporting events, etc.) and then cast it via Chromecast?
My computer is not powerful enough to cast a tab, so that is not an option.
Thank you.

If your provider has subscribed YouTube channels, Google says that should work.
If someone figures out how to add other dlna servers to Plex, I could try cable TV. I have a SiliconDust HD Homerun with cable card which has it's own dlna server.
Sent from my XT926 using Tapatalk
Plex can't help you with streaming live broadcast network TV. There's only a few sources for streaming live network TV over the internet, and they are generally expensive subscription services and restrictive in their terms and conditions (e.g., geographically limited to residents of one specific state, or requiring you to be a current subscriber to cable or satellite service for those channels). The best bet is probably USTVNow, which offers all the major networks and some premium channels - it's restricted to U.S. residents, but you can use it while traveling after signing up. However it only offers Eastern time zone feeds, and it's quite expensive after the free trial. And of course it's not supported on the Chromecast. You can get the client on Roku.
However you might want to consider what is "live" broadcast TV these days? Virtually everything being broadcast is pre-recorded content that's available from other internet sources within 24 hours of initial broadcast, including the network's own web site. Is it worth a hefty monthly fee to avoid a 24-hour delay in seeing something that was recorded a month ago?
Plex does have channels to stream web-site content from many of the broadcast networks, but that's one feature that is not supported in all Plex clients, and it has not been mentioned as part of the Chromecast support announcement even as a future capability. I suspect Google does not want it and Plex will therefore not support it on Chromecast ever.
Why would it have to be over the internet? It's a local file
The hdhr dumps the file to a URI (not URL) to play.

Yes. I am aware that I can go to the network's site 24 hours later. I'm not going to pay to watch "Revolution" or "The Blacklist" if I can just go to the website the next day. I was thinking something more like a large sporting event that occurs in February.

Keep an eye on XBMC developments....Some users have toyed with the idea of getting some Chromecast support and XBMC support PVR servers.
Plex does not support PVR as it is not meant as a Frontend just as a Backend Server. a PVR is a Server itself.
If Live TV is what you want your better off getting a Slingbox but that won't really help you as far as Chromecast is concerned and doubtful they will ever support it in their clients.
But if your looking to cut the chord then I find it highly doubtful that Chromecast will ever get the support it needs unless the networks who offer delayed full episodes bake CC support into their official apps.
I doubt you will ever see live content on a Chromecast that didn't start in a Chrome Browser and sent to chromecast via the Cast a Tab feature.
And Sports will be even harder to find because most Sports content has it's own PPV system that doesn't allow the networks that show those events to stream those games over the Net. They only have broadcast rights not streaming rights.
I beg to differ. I've already started on this quest and will not finish till I see it complete. I will get my cablecard to stream on ChromeCast.

The Whitelisting will be the key issue with that I believe...
I'm sure Sling folks could make it happen in a day...But will Google accept it as an acceptable use.
I sure hope most things that go out of their way to support Chromecast will get Whitelist approval until it goes away entirely (which may never happen)

Yep, I saw that and Aereo is basically saying. Yes, let's go to the supreme court to get a final ruling on this once and for all. If they win it's pointless for anyone to try to make another lawsuit and if they lose they close the doors. The problem right now is that they are winning these lawsuits but it's costly and time consuming so a supreme court ruling would put an end to the BS...
remote potato does live TV streaming if you want and is free
Aereo will most likely win in any court...
But that won't be the end of it...
TV Networks will be stupid as they usually are and start pulling their signal from the free airwaves (FCC would love to have their Spectrum back anyway to give to the Cell Companies)
And the Networks won't realize just how DUMB A MOVE it will be until it comes time to negotiate with the Cable Companies and realize that if they don't make a deal NO ONE will see their signal until they settle!
This is why I say the TV industry is going to eat itself right out of business because it's too damn greedy!
Makes 90% of it's revenue from Advertising which is based off how many people see their signal and they spend all that revenue on STOPPING PEOPLE from seeing their signal!
Just stupid!
The TV networks can't pull the signal off the air. They are there for people in cases of emergency like hurricane and other national disasters.

Also do suggest any free alternatives or ways to get Avia support for free since google wallet isnt supported in my country even though paying 3 dollars for an app isnt much trouble.

Oh, only saw him state that he can't use Google wallet, they accept credit cards too, or do they region lock those too? Maybe contact Plex and see what they can do, they are usually pretty accommodating.
I'm currently using Plex Media Server on my desktop to host my music (app is free for the PC) and then use Avia on my phone or tablet to access the Plex Media Server and stream to my chromecast on my home theater. Its a good work around until chromcast features are free on Plex.

Avia is on Amazon App Store too, and that version should use Amazon's in-app purchase rather than Google Wallet.
Can you get Google Wallet to activate using a Google Play redemption code, rather than credit card, or is it completely unsupported for your country?
Seems the first purchase (even a $0.00 purchase) requires adding some funds either through credit card or Google Play redemption code.
I can use amazon but Avia requires an in app purchase which is only available through google wallet. And Plex is the same story since its only available on the app store and not on amazon. I hate that google restricts regions like this. This is exactly the same reason why I had to buy my Nexus 5 for about $500 rather than for $450 through the google store.

It really depends on what your media library looks like.
In actuality they aren't head-to-head competitors much at all.
Avia is better if...
All your media is in a Chromecast-compatible format, or you are willing to convert it to a Chromecast-compatible format
You have a lot of media on your phone/tablet that you want to play and is Chromecast-compatible
You have a DLNA server that is not a Plex server and you want to cast content from it
You don't want to have a media server running (you don't have a server, or a system you're willing to have running for media playback)
Plex is better if...
Your media is not in a Chromecast-compatible format or you have no idea what that means
You have no clue what transcoding means, or you know what transcoding means, but you are unwilling to transcode your media library to make it Chromecast-compatible
You are okay with running Plex Media Server on a system for media playback
You have multiple playback devices (Roku, etc) that you use
Note that Chromecast support for Plex is currently limited to PlexPass members, but is planned to be released to the general public later.
I could be mistaken, but I believe someone said they use Avia to cast from Plex Media Server?
That actually made things really easy, Avia is the choice for me since I mostly only play mp3s and have my library stored on my Nexus 7 or 5. I wanted to ask, if I use a friend's credit card from the US and buy the app on my account would I be able to use the app outside the US or would I be able to download it on my device while staying in my country which doesnt support google wallet services.

Well if your only trying to stream content on the unit I do not see how location restrictions apply.
Apps aren't usually the reason for locations restrictions, The Content that the App makes available is usually why it's here but not there!
and it should be pointed out to everyone who complains about Google not making things available outside of US that is usually because of Import restrictions the EU has enacted not because Google doesn't want to make it available or can't!
So if you buy the App I see no reason why where you use it is going to be an issue especially since your intention is to stream your own content.

Yes this is what I do currently until the Plex app's chromecast feature works for free.

why dont you email them and ask, then come and post it here so everyone knows.
I wouldn't expect them to make it public until they have all the bugs worked out.
Most notably the issues with the transcoder.
And even then they might wait until Music and Picture support is implemented.

The Plex employees in their forums won't speculate, but they definitely aren't implying that it's soon. The more experienced long-term Plex users seem to be suggesting to expect around 6 months based on past experience. But for all we know it could be tomorrow, and they're just doing a really good job of keeping it quiet.

Truth is the Plex Pass fee is really only required for the Plex Player apps...
The Server is free! And truth is the Server is the most important part of that system because it works with any DLNA/UPnP player.
Right now aVia is the only player other than Plex that can play to CCast.
But it won't be the only one for long....
So it makes a ton of sense to be running a Plex Server (or any transcoding DLNA server for that matter) despite the fact you won't get all the features of it until a better player app that supports DLNA and CCast fully (With transcoding) comes along.
I'm using the Plex for android and stream media to my CC without any problem for about a week or so. It worked after they made an update recently. you just need to buy the app which is about 5 bucks.

No just buying the app isn't enough...
CCast support requires PlexPass account. You can run the app and stream to your device but the CCast streaming shouldn't not work unless you have a PlexPass subscription.
I will note someone had a link to a developer version of the Plex App that bypassed this requirement but I wouldn't trust it...
I have had Plex for some time now and they are right, it is a anyone's guess when the support opens for casting. The developer version works just fine in my opinion as well. Avia does most of what I want anyway so if you want to put your money in the right place now, get the avia app honestly.
Isn't a month membership only like $3.99? I imagine that would be worth it for the time being. Just pay the few dollars dude. Not a big deal.

It's not the cost... I purchased the plex app. That is what is needed for my use. I have also purchased the a avia app as well. I don't want to pay four bucks a month for a service that I rarely use. Four kids in college and all that.

Quite Understandable....I'm not even sure you can buy just one month as I thought the Sub Options were a Year and Lifetime.
I understand why CCast support is PlexPass only at this point. If you're a regular visitor to the Plex Forums you would see a myriad of issues being reported regarding the transcoding and specifically surround Audio. This is on top of the usual problems we talk about here such as loss of control, Network, Router and Connection issues.
Right now the PlexPass users are sort of acting as the Beta Testers for this since they are the most familiar with Plex and it's workings.
To open it up to the Public right now would probably overwhelm the support forum rehashing the Bugs they already know about and add the reports of things that are not broken just because the user didn't know there is a setting in Plex set wrong they didn't know exists.
I would guess that when the Transcoder is running perfectly you might see CCast support go Public.
But they may also wait until they finish their Music and Picture support which at this point does not exist at all.
aVia does work provided your library doesn't need transcoding but if you do then it might be worth paying for the PlexPass at least until they release it publicly.
Plex right now is the only system that works exactly as Google intended it to when they developed the CCast.
Mobile App tells the CCast to load a player app and play a stream direct from a server without needing the device that launched it once it starts.
Plex is the only system that transcodes local files for playback as RealPlayer requires you to upload to their cloud to get a transcoded stream back.
Perhaps the announcement about the 10 Apps with CCast support being added was a bit of stretching the truth for Christmas Shopping Marketing Purposes...
Cause lets be honest none of the options for Local Content are perfected or issue free. aVia has had at least 10 Updates since the announcement maybe even more....
Most of the work on the Plex side has been done to the server side because I haven't seen any updates to the Android apps itself, certainly not as many as the aVia Player has....
All the Local playback App options do the job better than CCast did before they were released...
But thats about all you can really say about them. They are all still learning how to crawl at this point and none are what I would call a perfected and Mature option that does everything we expect they should yet.
It's going to take time...What CCast does it much more complicated than what Miracast, Roku and Airplay do.
I need suggestion, I want the best VPN for my Samsung mobile
I have seen the cheapest deal of FastestVPN, they are offering 92% discount on 5 Year plan cost just $49.95 further they have also 10% extra discount coupon "FAST10"

nordvpn and pia
stop using free vpn noobs
I would suggest ProtonVPN. Been using it for over two years. Had Pia and NordVPN before but they heavily rely on ads and sponsored reviews. Not bad companies but I just prefer to know where my vpn servers are located. Proton also has a secure core feature where they route your traffic through two countries.
Out of all the VPNs I've tried EspressVPN has the best speed for me. It's the most expensive out of all of them, but it's worth it for me since it's almost always connected, to a USA server and I'm in Romania, I've never seen content buffer, in Youtube or Netflix.

I use Express as well just because it has an app for the TV.
I've been using ExpressVPN for about 2.5 years now. They are pricy but I love their apps and the fact that at home I set up my home router with their services so anyone on my network is hidden/secure.
