[Q] KFHD7 HDMI to TV could not go full screen? - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi fellow KFHD owners, I just had a strange experience trying to output video from the device via microHDMI to my TV. Basically it could not get the full screen and the resolution seems to be messed up as well. So in landscape mode, I have two black bars on each side of my TV screen.
I tried to play with my TV's setting (set as "just scan" which is the mode I always used for external devices, such as computer and tab). What puzzled me was that this same device used to output fine to this TV, I used it for Amazon Instant Video and the 720p HD videos played fine in full screen.
I'm on stock rooted and it's been a while since I played this device last time so my knowledge might be a little rusty. Can you guys give some advices pls?
Thanks.

I have the same issue. I set my display resolution to 720p with the command "wm size 720x1280" so it would at least be 16:9 aspect ratio, but it's still outputting the display pixel to pixel over HDMI. If I could set my monitor to overscan a large then I'd at least be able to get around the wasted screen space, but it can't do that.

MHL doesn't turn off the screen?

Hi
Any possibility for turning off the screen when I am using mhl tv out?
It doesn't makes sense that the screen it is on with the same image all the time.
How do you plan on doing stuff without using the screen? I can understand if you want to have it turned off during movies, but isn't it possible to turn the screen off and still get the image on the TV (when you're watching movies etc.)?

No, it isn possible.
If you turn the screen off, then the tv doens't play anything, thats because I ask.
For movies or flash on phone streaming to tv I don't want to have the screen on but I can't put it off and continue playing or I don't see how to do it
up ?
probably isnt possible, the same as with conencting a laptop to the tv via hdmi, the laptop cannot be shut and still plays the video
well i have a Blackberry Playbook + Galaxy Note, the playbook has an amazing option (would be great if they could put it in the Note) they have presentation mode for videos, u press it and then u can hit the off button, the screen will go off but the video will keep on playing
I am using Galaxy Note too. The reason why we need to turn off the Mobile Screen while playing movie, is because of the performance.
I read somewhere that the movie playing on TV is having bad performance because the phone has to render for 2 displays, hence it make the playback lags.
I bought MHL cable and it's really a waste that I can't have a smooth playback of movie...
I haven't tried it yet but maybe a combination of the TegraDisplaySelector.apk with chainfire3d will allow us to turn our screens off.
from:
http://dext3r.komodin.org/
This widget app will give you the option to be able to switch between LCD and HDMI output, so you can preserver battery power, and disable any
annoying display enabled on lcd while using your TV.
you need to note, that managing the display is best with a mouse, but you can still use the disabled tablet screen for controlling your screen, but its not easy.
Remember you need to add this to your screen as a widget, thats the only way to access it, and it require root access to run the lcd vs. hdmi functionality. It does not work on android 3.x, as the library does not appear on that release for now

A little off-topic, but yes you can. Windows button + P will shut the computer screen off and only show the image on the TV.
nothing new?
Interested in a solution to this myself. Why burn the pixels when there is no need? Im a bit uneasy trying out the tegra solution presented above. I am heading to the play store to see what is available as far as presentation apps and such.
Wanted to bump this thread back up. Has anyond found a way to turn off or disable the phone screen while using the mhl hdmi out?
Like others mentioned its silly to have the phone screen on at the same time your watching a movie on a tv screen. There should at least be an option to disable phone screen while watching movie.

No solutions yet? Would be nice if MHL mode could disable the phone screen for saving energy while improving HDMI video performance. I'd like to use my Galaxy Note as a netbook with external bluetooth mouse and keyboard, so keeping the phone screen on would be useless.
MHL does turn the screen off - but seems only while using built in player and playing a movie. At least it works like this on android 6 and Note 4. I am interested however in using KODI with the screen off while playing media...

mhl hdmi note 2 - unimpressed

so i just bought a MHL adapter for this in hopes of it looking good on a big screen. connected it to my 19" monitor first...popped up and it looked ok. icons were a little bigger than what looks compared to on the device. so using my BT mouse and keyboard i did some browsing around through some apps...not a good experience at all. then i noticed it cut the edges off on all 4 sides by just a little bit. look horrible. i thought it was the monitor, so i moved it to my 42" tv.
so connected it to my tv, again, cut off the edges, everything got larger. if you get a notification, the bar is so big u need to scroll down, not ideal, looks cheap.
tried web browsing, not as bad but every time you click on something to insert txt, a HUGE keyboard shows up that you have to hit back button on mouse or keyboard to get it to go away. cant get around this because to connect BT keyboard need to have the samsung keyboard active. maybe will be different using smart dock and usb keyboard. the notification bar takes up so much space along with tabbed browsing and address bar that 1/3 of your screen is gone.
the audio sounded horrible via hdmi, didnt try to use a 3.5mm out at the same to see if that would change.
oh and it eats battery.
did anyone else try it and have better luck? will the smart dock do a better job?
To get rid of the on screen keyboard while using a secondary monitor, download "null keyboard" from the play store. Also, I agree that the hdmi experience isn't anything to write home about, but it is useful for watching downloaded movie's, or browsing YouTube. I use a handheld bluetooth keyboard, and it's usable, but not too pleasant.
the reason why the edges are cut off isnt because of your phone, its because of your TV. you have overscan enabled. disable it.
as for the keyboard, yeah, i noticed that as well. it seems to only really go away with the default keyboard. kinda annoying =(
I believe with the smart dock the keyboard doesn't pop up if u have one connected

whats overscan? i tried looking at every setting for picture..didnt see anything ..
The MHL should have a power connector because of the high power consumption of the device. It needs to be plugged in. I get great sound over HDMI, maybe your video has a bad encode?
I will agree, on a 40" TV it doesn't look too great, but then I didn't transcode for a large screen either...
Would running a custom rom stop from the mhl hdmi to work?

Hdmi sound is digital. Something is wrong with your setup

Greetings i just bought the original Samsung MHL for note 2 and galaxy s3 today .
To be honest if you want to play games , or do what you normally do with your phone its very laggy and bad quality picture.
If you want it to watch movies, youtube, music, Photos e.t.c ( Multimedia) its great . The video engine its totally different so the video output on screen its very nice and the sound very good.
So if you dont have a media center home or smart tv or whatever its good to have . If you have then its a bad investment you can not do much on screen even with BT keyboard.
Oh , browsing its ok...
I expected more but unfortuantly thats the deal, i dont know if someone running 4.1.2 can confirm better performance on mirroring , games etc. i run stock on latest update 4.1.1 .
Cheers

I own the Smart Dock and the virtual keyboard doesn't pop up when connected to USB KVM.
As far the display not fitting the screen there's a tools button on the Samsung TV's remote that allows changing the Picture Size to Just Scan so it fits properly.
For the most part it works well except for a few minor quirks but it may be related to me connected to an Avocent KVM to use one set of monitor, keyboard and mouse for all my devices. For anyone with Smart Dock, does holding down both shift and space bring up English(US)?
Yes this is overscan. This is common place with home theater pcs. Typically tvs don't have much functionality when it comes to dealing with over/underscan. Luckily with pcs, gpu drivers do.

You can turn overscan off. Just look in your televisions picture setup. The scaling should be done by your phone. Not the telly.

The stock video player plays full screen and correct aspect ratio. Random regular apps like gtalk display full screen and correct aspect also.
Netflix squishes into 4:3 for no explicable reason.
It's not the particular video on netflix since it looks right on the phone screen and it looks right on the tv too if I use my ltevo to play the same vid via mhl to the same tv over the same hdmi cable instead of the gn2.
Stretch to fit doesn't correct it either. No zoom/aspect option corrects it.

Yes netflix is squished into 4:3 on the smart dock too and probably on the allshare cast hub but I don't have that to test it.
The squish thing Netflix does is just Netflix and whatever coding they did for the app. I think it does same thing on the GS3.

[Q] Nook HD+ HDTV Adapter and versions of CM

Recently I bought the HDTV adapter for my Nook HD+ and I'm trying to find the version of CM that will work best with it. I could not find this information through searching the forum.
My Nook had CM 10.1.3 the first time I tried it and it did not work particularly well. It was in the wrong resolution and did not display full screen. I did some searches on the forum and found that updating may fix the problem so I updated to CM 10.2.
CM 10.2 seemed to work better. Video looked much sharper, but 1080p video was choppy (probably because the Nook is playing the video on both screens) and still would not fill the screen.
Is there a version that has perfect or near perfect functionality? I really just need:
-not choppy 1080p video, games and emulators to play in full screen
-when playing a movie the Nook will normally display, "Playing on TV" so that the nook only has to render video on one screen
Are both of these possible?

I think that depends on your tv. I have two tvs at home and one shows as full screen with default setting, and the other one doesn't.
Try to change the scale setting of your tv.

I appreciate the response. Unfortunately I have tried to change the aspect ratio settings and none of them fix the full screen problem. I've tried every screen setting on multiple TV's and there's no way to get full screen. I also tried the Resolution Changer app and that did not work either.

I do have MX player also that's a good player. I updated to CM 11, Wiped data & factory reset, cleared the cache and video seems to be in full screen now. It still plays on both screens though, but I guess that doesn't matter. I wonder if anyone knows how to make the video only play on the TV?
The HDMI adapter was originally $39. If I paid that much for this piece of $hit, I would have shot someone. It is garbage and not worth the hours of your life you will spend on it. Even with it works, it stops working if you fart (literally) or bump it. And when it does 'work' the resolution is for crap. If I could roll back time and have given a homeless person $13 and never have seen this disaster, I would have done so in a minute. It is the single most shockingly low quality piece of trash I have encountered in the modern era of electronics. Spend another $15 and get a raspberry pi or something.
I'm disappointed in the HDMI adapter as well.
The fine print in the specs rate it at 24fps @1080P, which is unacceptable.
That's part of the motivation to get Wi-Fi display/miracast working, plus the latter doesn't need a cable.
With Wi-Fi display working and wiimote support, one would have a nice functional media center using xbmc/kodi.

the monitor resolution is 2560x1440, it handles the resolution. I am using the laptop on it with this resolution. The dex show the option for 2560x1440 but it is grayed out?
Same here, even though the monitor and cable is 4k/60Hz capable. Supposedly the Samsung dock and pad work in WQHD, so that would mean they are using a chip ID verification to make sure the 3rd party gear doesn't give full resolution. Just guessing though.
Same problem here... All cables used that came in the box, using a Sony Bravia XE90E.
That panel is well capable of all funky resolutions, certainly 1440p as well.
Mirroring works fine, but what good is mirroring worth really. Nobody bought a DEX Pad to just mirror.
I wondered this too few days ago when I first time tested it with a cheap adapter from Amazon. I also read somewhere that the highest resolution is only available with those "pad" device(s). Not a biggie for me, since the 2560x1440 doesn't scale nicely to a 4K monitor, but the lower FullHD resolution does. It is not like I'd be doing my main work with the phone anyway, but it is a "nice to have" in some random situation where I didn't drag my heavyweight laptop with me.
Would be nice if the resolution selection would give a clear text explaining why that choice is disabled, though.
I read somewhere that only the original samsung pad with the fan allows resolutions over full hd because going overheats the phone too much and damages it, I do not know if it's true or not though.

@jesadac Are you able to test with a regular cable, and see if the resolution support drops to FHD ? My cables work fine on a MacBook Pro for WQHD, but when connected to my Note 9 with latest version, won't go higher than FHD, even if everything supports it. I am trying to confirm that Samsung locked the higher resolution to their products.
They seem to have at least tried some partial locking, or it may be a technical reason (e.g. ability to drive higher bitrates in specific situations), or whatnot.
I managed to get the highest resolution with one 3rd party USB-C hub, but it allowed DEX mode only when that hub got external power (and thus also charged the phone). Another hub (claimed to support 4K) didn't give highest resolution even when it was also getting external power, so it is obviously a bit hit/miss..
EDIT: The better working hub shows mirrored screen without external power, at that 2560x1440 resolution. There are some random temporary screen artifacts with that hub, though, at least for a while after DEX gets turned on, and sometimes phone-hub-monitor protocols don't quite get it right, showing some really low resolution DEX view with a popup saying something about that too low resolution

Ah.... that's very good info. If a 3rd party can, then it's likely a capability support issue. I don't see why on earth a different device could display a higher res than the Note 9, when all is the same, except the source.
I'm ok in FHD on the monitor. While not as sharp, its workable. But on a 70" 4K TV, its so pixelated, it's not funny. I would pretty much like the higher resolution to make the movie playback and picture browsing a nicer experience when the out laws are in town.

I actually prefer the FullHD on a 4K monitor, because otherwise non-integer scaling makes some things worse, at least for text. OTOH, movies and photos are indeed likely better with higher resolution even with non-integer scaling. I did use it at highest resolution on a 4K monitor for a while using 1:1 mode on the monitor, so that there was no scaling (but lots of black margin). I'd naturally prefer 1:1 at 2560x1440 to my older 2560x1600 monitor (so just a little black on top and bottom), but seems that the older monitor does not support the full resolution through its HDMI inputs or something
EDIT: Oh, and at work I connected the phone directly to 4K monitor with the monitor's included USB-C-to-USB-C cable, with keyboard and mouse connected to the monitor's USB ports, and phone being charged by the monitor through that cable. Everything worked just fine, but I'm not 100% sure did it allow the highest resolution.. I think it did.

Ah... bliss. That is the example of why I love USB type C so much now. A bunch of thunderbolt 3 rated cables is all I need really now. Likely hitting the menu can confirm the resolution. I like the wide resolution as its native on my monitors and TV (16:9 aka WQHD). I just ordered a DeX pad. I will sell the old dock if that works fine at the higher resolution. It's not bad and compact. I found a good price on Amazon, so it's not too bad in the end I guess. Pair it with a portable keyboard trackpad and I may leave that in the living room.
I'm using a third party USB-C hub that allows Dex to work on Galaxy S9 with and without external power. The thing is that my S9 only works at FHD while using the same setup with a Galaxy S8 allows for 2560x1440. It's frustrating. Sadly I can not provide detailed info about the TV set and the S8. If anyone has any suggestion on how to set up my S9 to allow higher res it would be much appreciated.

Based on my Amazon order history, it was this:
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B07FRZCLGB/
Whether it is still the exact same hardware, who knows (sometimes these no-name things change technically without revealing it), but at least it is "Amazon's Choice" (pfft) and "Dispatched by Amazon", and seems to still get good ratings (and bad ones, too).
As it is such a no-name thing, it is totally up to random chance whether it can be found in other amazon sites or not. If no luck with direct name and model, then with some extra luck, one might find it by the exact same look (and possibly even exactly same photos) but with different brand.

Appreciate that. On Reddit/SamsungDex I'm trying to put together a list of non samsung hubs that give greater than 1080p resolution in dex mode.
If you remember, do you mind sharing what phone and monitor you were using with that hub and what resolution was selectable in dex mode?
Much appreciated.
