Guys,i have Retail 1058 Moto X with unlocked Bootloader,TWRP(latest and rooted) and i want to upgrade to 4.4.2!
Some guys already received the 4.4.2 brazilian update via OTA,and extracted the zip file,but,since im on custom recovery,the OTA doesnt reboot the phone into stock and go straight to TWRP,therefore,doesnt conclude the update,and keep restarting!
Since i need the phone,i did a factory reset via TWRP just to get things going!
But,i want to upgrade to 4.4.2!
Is there a way to do that?remove TWRP ou something else?
I've seen some people saying that i need to flash the 4.4 img which it is inside the zip but,i dont have that zip anymore!

if you take the 4.4.2 update you will loose root and wont be able to get it back till who knows when.
but you need to flash your phone back to 100% stock just like you did when root your device but instead of using the 4.2.2 CU firmware use the 4.4

your device is a Att model so you should be able to flash the ATT 4.4 firmware but im not 100% sure but maybe you will find your carrier listed there.

yeah,i know,aware of loosing root,but,mine is retail,and i've found the brazilian retail one(Blur_Version.143.44.8.ghost_row.Brasil.en.BR)!

there are two ways in this guide i like the manual way. but your choice make sure you read everything because if you do this wrong you can brick.

One questiona buddy managed to get the fastboot img for me,if i just flash the stock recovery img and then try to update will it work?

idk i dont like to doing things half way there have been way to many bricks lately.
If he has an unlocked bootloader, why would he not be able to get root back?
I thought when the bootloader was unlocked you had free reign over the device. Shouldn't he be able to upgrade to 4.4.2 and use SU and TWRP to get root back? I don't get why he wouldn't be able to do that.

this is why i dont read on my phone i miss crap anyway if you flash 4.4.2 yes you can flash the 4.4 TWRP and then SuperSU with a unlocked bootloader.. sorry for my miss read thanks for the catch

Can someone else please chime in on this? I have a Dev Edition VZW Moto X, and when the 4.4.2 update is finally available, I want to know what to do. My phone is unlocked & rooted with TWRP installed. Can I just flash the factory recovery and then take the OTA? Or do I have to revert to 100% stock? If I only flash stock recovery and take the OTA, data won't be wiped, will it? That is the big reason I would like to avoid going back to 100% stock if I can.

My hope is that someone on here will repackage the OTA for us to sideload. That would be the best case scenario.
If not, I think you just need a stock recovery, but I could be wrong. I've seen someone say you need to flash stock system as well. I have the same questions as you if we don't get a side loadable zip.

It's not the end of the world if I have to wipe data and restore everything from TiBu, but it's still a PITA I would like to avoid if possible. More importantly, I don't want to run into any issues when installed the update. So if there is any question as to whether stock recovery alone is sufficient for the update to install properly, I will probably go back to full stock to be safe. I guess I have some time to let smarter people figure it out, since there is no update for VZW yet.

What I've read is you need to go back to stock recovery and also make sure any /system files are unchanged. For example I renamed my old exchange apk's (in /system/app) when I put in the new ones from the nexus 5 on 4.4.2, so I would need to name those files back.

What have you done to take you off of stock?
I just have custom recovery and xposed. Xposed shouldn't cause any issues.

I guess nothing, other than TWRP, Xposed, and obviously root. I have seen several people say that you have to unroot before installed an OTA, but I don't know if that applies to the Dev X or just the standard version. A lot of people seem to indicate that you have to go back to stock, so I just want to clarify what is really required.

Good questions. I'm not sure. We certainly root differently than a non Dev edition. They might have some files modified that we don't have to modify. Also, I wonder is going to stock recovery will unroot us.
I guess we wait and stay patient.

Unfortunately you can not take the ota if
1- you have custom recovery
2- root
3- changed any system file
It will bootloop
Clearing data is always required after any ota
The only hope you have is if someone decides to take that factory image and runnit through kitchen to make it a flashable zip. You will also need the updated modem from either 4.4 or 4.4.2 to prevent system settings from fc ing
This goes for any moto, retail and or developer edition
You may also attempt to flash the sbf firmware and remove the delete userdata from the XML but no guarantee that you will not have issues

To take an ota you must be stock. Meaning everything. As long as you haven't flashed an updated bootloader you can just flash system.IMG and recovery.IMG from the sbf your phone is currently on you can take an ota. A successful ota does NOT require a data wipe.

You cannot flash any of those through twrp! If you want to flash 4.4.2 you need to fastboot the system.IMG and boot.IMG and you will need to wipe your data. If you choose this route you will not be able to take the ota when its available you'd have to wait for the sbf file to be released and update through house of moto, rsd, or fastboot.

some questions.. and comments...
I agree with #1. You must have STOCK recovery for an OTA to install properly. And #3, because the OTA generally has a file list with check sums to compare against what is on your device to make sure all required files are there and the correct version/size/etc before it will start to install.
#2 I have a question on as I've not had an issue with this unless the root process makes changes to system files (thus causing a problem for #3). I've lost root taking an OTA, but that is it.
Then again, I have a Dev X with unlocked bootloader, and I don't know enough about RockMyMoto, SlapMyMoto, etc was of rooting the X, except that initially they replaced the recovery partition with an image that when selected/booted allowed write to system, etc. This would cause issue with #1 (no longer have stock recovery on the recovery partition), but not sure what, if any system files get touched or altered from stock.
Finally, you mention clearing data being required... This would wipe you back to factory defaults and remove your apps/data. I don't believe its "required" but rather just suggested as it can make the device run smoother after the update is done.

Depends on how you rooted.
If you've downloaded the SBF file for the ROM on your device (if you don't have it, see if its available from -> http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0 ), you can unzip it, and fastboot flash the stock recovery from it onto your device, take the OTA, and then later fastboot flash TWRP back on and install SuperSU again to root.
This assumes you did NOT touch any system files the update will check for prior to running/installing. If you did touch system files, edit build prop, removed/renamed any APK's... then fastboot flash recovery and system before taking the OTA
Any chance there'll be one done sans the bootloader? Btw, I'm referring to the DE model.

Yes, I doubt someone will go to the trouble of modding the OTA for a custom recovery when it would only be saving you a few minutes of flashing stock recovery, stock system, OTA, custom recovery, root. It is after all developer friendly.

but it just makes common sense to do this since i'm having to figure out how to get stock recoveries for other variants. where is the sbfs?????
I, for one, would prefer to have a flashable zip to use via twrp. I've followed the instructions for restoring stock recovery, uninstalling xposed... But the ota still fails.
It shouldn't have to be this hard on a DEVELOPER device.

Try flashing the stock system partition... might be something else on system that you missed.

Man, I'm hitting a wall at every turn. I don't know why this is overly complicated on a "Dev" device.
Its not complicated. You need to be fully stock...no modifications for an ota. Or...wait for flashable files. (My choice usually)
If you want the ota and can't wait. The easiest thing to do...in my opinion ...is rsdlite to stock rom. Take ota. Reroot after. Simple. You will get your phone completely wiped tho.
Having a dev edition has no benefit for any of this. The ota is meant for stock...unrooted..."regular " customers.

As someone who has a Dev edition I think it's never been easier. I have been on a 4.4.2 build for weeks now. Just fastboot flash and go. I didn't have to wait for flashable zips, with minor research I was able to easily do the work myself. That is the point if the Dev edition isn't it?

Are you getting an error message? Have you frozen or deleted any System apps?
AGAIN, missing the point, i have the same doubt, i have the ota update of 4.4.2 claro chile, and i have the fastboot version post camera, there is no flashable firmware for that, only for 4.2.2 pre camera, so i want to manually do the flash of the ota....can this be done?

Full restore to stock would be to SBF back to appropriate version.
To just flash a recovery, simply download one, move it to ADB folder then run

Yes, if you use RSDLite to flash a SBF you are flashing the full stock rom, recovery, boot, etc.
If you want to be on stock 4.4, why not just use RSDLite to flash the 4.4. SBF?

Seems like the most straightforward method to get to fully rooted (with r/w) on 4.4.2 would be to SBF 4.4 to return to full stock. Take the OTA to 4.4.2, then unlock.
Is there a way to root without a custom recovery? I was under the impression that it was much more simple with an unlocked bootloader. The guides I've seen for installing TWRP are certainly much more simple than the SlapMyMoto process, but I thought it was as simple as just installing SuperSU or putting the APK in /system or something. I guess I was mistaken on that part.

You can unlock your BL regardless of what version of android you are on. I just wanted to get back to stock so slapmymoto was no longer active (which is kinda a workaround for root imho, but it works and does its job.)
To root with an unlocked bootloader, all you have to do is download the TWRP img file and the supersu.zip file. Push the supersu.zip to your SD card. Use fastboot to flash TWRP img file. Boot into the recovery you just flashed and install the supersu.zip file. Bam you're rooted.

Well, you can unlock your bootloader at any time once you have the unlock code. The Android version on your phone doesn't matter.
Flashing TWRP, booting to it and installing SuperSU is how you root with an unlocked bootloader. No matter what rom is on your phone right now, if you have the bootloader unlock code, you can unlock. You don't have to be on a special version to unlock your phone's bootloader once you have the code.
The OTA's are incremental updates. They require pre-requisites be in place or they fail. You must be on a specific previous ROM, and "step up." They check for specific files/version/check sums to be on your phone before they install. If your phone doesn't match the version the OTA is looking for, or a particular file on your phone doesn't match what the OTA is looking for, the OTA will fail. To put it another way... to take the 4.4.2 OTA, your phone needs to be on 4.4. To take the 4.4 OTA, your phone needs to be on the 4.2.2 w/camera fix version. To take the 4.2.2 w/camera fix OTA, your phone needs to be on the initial shipping ROM version.
SBF's are complete roms containing every file/partition/modem for that version. You can flash the 4.4.2 SBF directly over any other ROM version. It wont stop you.
Just remember when flashing an SBF, there is a line in the XML that RSDLite uses that controls whether it wipes your data or not when flashing. (The thread about returning to stock using RSDlite explains it.) BUT since the process of unlocking your bootloader will factory reset your phone which wipes the data anyway...RSDLite erasing your data isn't a problem if you do it right before or right after you unlock your bootloader.

SBF's are complete roms containing every file/partition/modem for that version. You can flash the 4.4.2 SBF directly over any other ROM version. It wont stop you.
Just remember when flashing an SBF, there is a line in the XML that RSDLite uses that controls whether it wipes your data or not when flashing. (The thread about returning to stock using RSDlite explains it.) BUT since the process of unlocking your bootloader will factory reset your phone which wipes the data anyway...RSDLite erasing your data isn't a problem if you do it right before or right after you unlock your bootloader.

For the most part, you can use mfastboot to flash just system.img and recovery.img, this will get those two parts back to stock, which is often enough to allow you to take an OTA update, however, if you've touched any other part, your phone wont be 100% stock. And then, how long does it take for the OTA to install and reboot? Now, in fury683's case, the phone is on 4.4 and he wants to go to 4.4.2. But if the phone was on say either of the 4.2.2 versions and he wanted to go to 4.4.2, then you'd also have multiple OTA's to install.
Using the full SBF and RSDlite will flash all parts, gets you to 100% stock, and immediately on the version you want. I don't know everything that SlapMyMoto and MotoWpNoMo touch, so I can't say for sure if flashing system and recovery are enough to totally remove them, or just remove enough to allow you to take an OTA.
System.img takes the longest to flash via either mFastboot or RSDLite, the rest are really quick, so the time spent using RSDLite to flash everything isn't that much more than manually flashing just system.img and recovery.img via mfastboot.
So considering that the mfastboot oem unlock does a factory reset anyway (so data is going to be lost), and flashing with RSDlite flashes all parts as 1 batched operation (i.e. you don't have to individually execute mfastboot lines...) using RSDLite can get you to the final destination, and ensure 100% stock, more easily.
I did mine last night from 4.4. I unlocked, got a clean 4.4 , took ota, flash twrp, install su. If you do in the right order shouldn't take more than 30 mins to be up and running again. If you use Titanium backup be sure to pull your files to computer before doing the bootloader unlock.

The OTA's are incremental updates. They require pre-requisites be in place or they fail. You must be on a specific previous ROM, and "step up." They check for specific files/version/check sums to be on your phone before they install. If your phone doesn't match the version the OTA is looking for, or a particular file on your phone doesn't match what the OTA is looking for, the OTA will fail. To put it another way... to take the 4.4.2 OTA, your phone needs to be on 4.4. To take the 4.4 OTA, your phone needs to be on the 4.2.2 w/camera fix version. To take the 4.2.2 w/camera fix OTA, your phone needs to be on the initial shipping ROM version.

Thanks for your help. The process was much less painful than I expected. Aside from downloading the SBF file, whole process to SBF, unlock, flash TWRP and root took about 20 minutes.

I recently unrooted my Moto X 1053 DevEd (GSM) in order to accept the Lollipop 5.1 OTA. I got the update and it's working great.
Now I want to re-root my phone, but first I want to be sure that I have a copy of stock recovery.img for Lollipop 5.1.
How can I back up recovery.img from my phone without my phone being rooted?

is temp booting custom recovery still possible... I haven't messed around with stuff in a while, but I think if you can temp boot twrp recovery (fastboot boot twrp) you might be able to use it to back up the stock recovery... you should google for more info on that, make sure it doesn't flash instead of boot.
otherwise you can't backup stock recovery without root. it's kind of a catch 22: you want to back up stock recovery before you root, but you can't do that on the device without root.
normally you can get the recovery from the stock firmware zip file. but I don't think Motorola is handing them out for 5.1 yet - if they are then it will be in that file. if not I suppose the next best thing is to rummage through the OTA file. I haven't unzipped it myself but it has to be in there right? some info that might help: the recovery size is 10mb. That is a really, really helpful post, dtg7. I had hoped Moto would have posted the firmware, but I guess I'm too impatient. As I didn't have a separate copy of the OTA, I'm doing as you suggested and grabbing the OTA from the site you linked to. I'll try to extract the recovery.img file from there. I'll post my results.

This is precisely my problem. I get semi-proficient with phone stuff every now and then when I'm changing things around, but then I forget almost everything I need to know to do the most basic geek maneuvers. When I had an HTC Sensation, which was a favorite for ROM-makers and modders, I was swapping out the ROM nearly every day between meals. With the Moto X I haven't done this much, maybe because I've gotten older, but mainly because there don't seem to be as many custom ROMs for the Moto X (nor is as much need for them, with Xposed and with a decent stock ROM.

I've got Lollipop 5.1 on my phone, and "About Phone" lists it as 222.21.15.
It's actually system.img from 222.21.15 that I'm trying to get ahold of.

file name ... references the build your phone must be on to accept the update, not the version of the update itself. That is how Moto has done it for some time now.

I'm in the same boat, only I need the recovery to kick off encryption. My process was, test the TWRP lollipop build, backup data with TWRP, flash 4.4.4 stock, OTA upgrade to Lollipop, install TWRP, restore data, can't encrypt now without stock recovery.

Maybe I didn't look hard enough.
I *did* find the 4.4.4 recovery.img in the uncompressed file I requested and received from Moto. It seems like Moto sometimes uses the same recovery.img from release to release, but I'd be skittish about using this with stock 5.1 until someone can give it the all-clear. As of right now (27 june 15, 9:00 GMT), Moto hasn't posted stock 5.1.

Thanks! I'm not sure if I want to try flashing just the recovery or not, I've been having lots lof radio active time so I migh full wipe/flash to try to clear that up.

No the new updates do not relock the bootloader. I suggest you first try out the Lollipop by flashing it through latest version of TWRP. If you think you can live with it than just flash complete stock through rsdlite or manually by fastboot. Reason I say that is because once you take the OTA it will update both bootloader version and the partition tables which means you won't be able to revert back to a lower Android version without the risk of bricking your device.

I don't want to go back to complete stock, I want to keep bootloader unlocked and root. Is there a stock rooted rom out there I can flash w/ TWRP without having to do OTA or flashing the recovery back to stock?
Yes there is its in the development section. You'll read the thread something like xt1053 stock flash-able. It contains only the kernel and system files so you should be good.

First off, there is no Verizon 5.1 yet. So any 5.1 you try will be for a different model, and if you flash a full rom, it will have different radios (which don't work for CDMA that Verizon still uses for voice/3g data. If you keep your stock VZW radio files, keep in mind they will be on a different version than the rest of the rom which could cause some inconsistencies and issues. IF you do flash a FULL SBF, you will be stuck with no SAFE way to revert to 4.4.4 due to GPT.BIN/Motoboot.img (for more on this, see the link in my signature), and you'll have to wait for the Verizon 5.1 SBF to get back to Verizon's rom.
Next, to install an OTA update, when it becomes available, you need STOCK RECOVERY on your phone. The OTA also does a pre-flash check/validation of your phone before it flashes, so if anything it looks for is not what it expects, the OTA will fail. Because of that you need to be 100% stock, or very near to it.
Finally, NO, an OTA will not relock your bootloader, nor will flashing an SBF.

That being said, if you TRY a 5.1 rom that is out there for another model you best bet is to find one that is a TWRP back up of 5.1 installed on someone's phone, since it only updates system.img and boot.img. It may not work 100% (because part of your phone will still have the 4.4.4 files), but it will give you a taste and you could later revert back to the stock 4.4.4 which you currently have on your phone. IF you flash a FULL SBF, you might be stuck with no way to revert to 4.4.4 due to GPT.BIN/Motoboot.img (for more on this, see the link in my signature)
Hi Bushako, I've Moto X Verizon XT1060 and it's struck in 4.2.2 android. When I try to update using setting, about phone and system update it show there is no update available but the android version on it is 4.2.2
5.1 is available for Verizon Moto X 1st gen now isn't it? I am googling for a detailed process on how to update from 4.2.2 to 5.1 and keeping root but not having any luck finding anything. Is it easy to update from 4.2.2 stock rooted to 5.1? The specs of my phone are the same as the original post:

Aug 1, when I last posted in this thread, Verizon 5.1 wasn't available. It is now.
As for updating and keeping root, there are a few ways to do it. Since you say your Bootloader is unlocked, the best way is flash 5.1 SBF, and use the process of flashing TWRP and SuperSU to root and have Write protection Disabled (see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/how-to-how-to-root-5-1-unlocked-t3140217 ). If you're bootloader isn't unlocked yet, and if you are on 4.4.2 or lower and have NEVER upgraded to 4.4.4 or 5.1, use Sunshine to unlock the bootloader FIRST

Bootloader is unlocked, I get the warning every time I restart the phone.
Where can I find the SBF files? Every post I find from a search the links do not work.
Are the SBF files stock or from someone else's phone?
Do I flash the files with my currently installed TWRP?
When I flash the SBF does it remove TWRP so I have to re flash it?
Are there any radio upgrades/do they get done w/ the SBF?
Sorry if these are basic questions, I have not done much phone rooting since my old HTC Incredible.

There is a link in my signature to a thread containing the known places that were hosting the SBF/FXZ files. That is the only place I can suggest you look.
SBF/FXZ files I'm taking about are stock, and digitally signed by Motorola. They can be flashed on phones with locked or unlocked bootloaders. NOTE: make sure you get the SBF for your device model and carrier!!
You flash these via Mfastboot or RSDLite. When using these tools you are flashing back to stock. After you get the SBF file, see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61142892&postcount=2 and read the REQUIREMENTS section, and pick either Option 3, 4 or 5 to actually flash (only use one option. which ever you find the easiest. Do NOT use Option 1 or 2 as they would not apply to your situation). I usually recommend option 5.
Yes, the process of flashing the entire SBF will overwrite TWRP with stock recovery. You'll need to flash it later as part of the rooting process.
Yes there are radio updates in the newer SBF files.

I only say this because 5.1 seems more stable (and less buggy) if a factory reset is done before/during the upgrade process.
