Bootloader Situation - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

This time around it looks like AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile will have S5 with locked bootloader. (Only Sprint's S5 will have unlocked BL).
1. AT&T started with S4 and continued the tradition there after (G2, N3 etc.) (Also no dev edition AFAIK)
2. T-Mobile started with LG G Flex and looks like it will continue the tradition with S5. (Source) (Also no dev edition AFAIK)
3. Verizon started who knows when? (At least verizon is nice enough to have Dev edition, albeit expensive as hell).
What does all this mean?
Well you can't have "traditional" custom recovery so that means NO ASOP, NO custom Kernels etc.
You can have a recovery called "Safestrap" which will allow you to flash only TW based ROMs and simple MODs such as bootanimations but nothing more.

Wow! Thanks for the info. I am shocked T-Mobile locked theirs down too. I would just love to ask, why? I wonder what changed T-Mobile's mind on bootloaders. The Note 3 shipped with an unlocked bootloader.
Anyway, as long as I have root I am fine. If TW is smoother this time around, I'll have no plans to eventually root. Still shocked on T-Mobile's move. See, they're growing and getting bigger and perhaps more greedier now.

WOW! That's some BS. How can it be rooted for roms? Makes no sense. And I thought T-Mobile was with it these days.

not sure why in two places? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2692167

A REAL droid 3 petition

If you're looking for something to ask motorola that will make our phones better, is possible for them to do and is almost somewhat expected (I keep thinking about how they say they're striving to work with the rom development community ...) feel free to post your thoughts for motorola here. An unlocked bootloader would allow us to run a custom kernel on our phones, I imagine CM9 would be up within days of motorola offering a bootloader unlock solution!!
Excellent point! I think begging for an early upgrade is silly, but asking for an unlocked bootloader would make our phones that much better. I would rather have a D3 with lots of Dev support, than a locked down D4. I came from a droid Incredible and the Dev support was great, and it breathed life into a phone that was somewhat dated.
Dear Moto, please unlock the bootloader.

Running CM9 now... only real issues are Camera, B key not working on keyboard, and the data being somewhat flaky for people, although it works fine once you get it going. Just be patient, we have great devs and don't really need an unlock. It would be nice though.
Motorola is okay with unlocking the bootloader from what I've heard but Verizon doesn't want it. From locked bootloaders to forced bloatware to removing Google Wallet from the Nexus, its clear that Verizon just loves to screw with Android. When are they going to learn the most people only want to use your network, we could care less about anything you have to offer.
I would sign that petition
xt860, android 2.3.5, Eclipse 1.1.1
I'd be happy with an unlocked bootloader. This phone has the power to run ICS. Even if they never give us ICS, make it easy to make on our own...cause we sure as hell will.

idk y Verizon would let samsung unlock bootloaders and not motorola. Nexus is unlockable. Google Wallet is blocked becasue Verizon (+partners) spent $100Million (or something ridic) in a very similar banking product.
I was referencing a story where Verizon removed the option to unlock the bootloader on the Razr.
http://techcrunch.com/2011/10/24/mo...oader-tool-for-droid-razr-verizon-removes-it/
maybe we should start a petition to verizon to get a unlockable to all of there phones because its more and more on verizon then the companys, HTC listen, Moto said they would be nothing from Verizon

Since it is a development phone for the new OS, I think that the Nexus *must* be unlockable. It's the same reason why the Xoom is unlockable - it was the reference device for Honeycomb. So, if the next Nexus phone is Motorola, and it's on Verizon, it should also be unlockable.

I wonder if they would consider that when they disallow rooting in the first place. More likely a play to insure that phone's stay locked to their network with their software. I can also see it from a support perspective but with custom roms available you change your first support step to "restore the original software, does it work now" and continue like normal from there.

Question about development

Moto X has been released in the end of summer and yet it looks pretty dead in here. What gives? Not a developer friendly phone?
I'm a new user of moto x (bought yesterday) and I think that devs are waiting for more upgrades to kit kat in all carriers and versions (VZ, ATT, GSM, rogers)
Not a lot of devs bought the phone. Also most people are happy with the phone as-is.
any phone with locked bootloaders will be not be super active with development. Also most people want aosp roms (CM, AOKP) etc, so we already basically have aosp on here anyway, so there isn't a lot of negativity about the lack of development
The Stock ROM is perfect, xposed framework makes it even more beyond perfect. If that's possible
Sent on my Moto X
I figure camera and screen colors could be tweaked .....I heard those are weak spots.
I suspect sales of the Moto X are not quite as good as anticipated, which is a real shame since it's such an excellent phone.
Additionally, and most importantly, the two biggest carriers - AT&T and Verizon - have locked bootloaders for the subsidized versions, which comprise a vast majority of phone sales. Offering a dev edition isn't enough if you can't get that edition subsidized, since one of the major drivers of development is the popularity of a phone.
To boot, Motorola only recently changed their policy on unlocking bootloaders to not void the warranty, which may have driven some people to buy subsidized/locked versions rather than springing for the development edition. Aside from the development edition being ugly (IMO), it's hard to justify spending $500+ on something that has no warranty.
I dont get the point of dev edition phones that are so hard to root. i just spend like an hour reading here and still dont know how to root tmobile MX, and i've rooted all my phones with breeze starting with N1

If you have a Dev edition Moto X it should take 5 minutes to root......
Flash a recovery in fastboot, then flash a SU package.

I dont believe anyone has the AT&T variant in hand, but if history has taught us anything its that AT&T will have it locked down.
AT&T will 99.99% lock the bootloader on the S5. They stated they will lock the bootloaders: "To ensure a safe and consistent experience on your wireless device, we do not support unlocked bootloaders."
I just wish T-Mobile would improve in my area because they are doings things right. Like selling the 32GB S5.

LokiDoki was bad ass lol. I had kept it on my s4 all the way to the end. Everyone kept saying there would be another exploit, but there never was. The AT&T S4 doesn't see much development nowadays. Safestrap is good, but not the same. Maybe there will be a developer who can actually UNLOCK the bootloader instead of finding a way around it. These devices have become so hard to root, flash, and restore to stock with these locked bootloaders. Glad T-Mobile is getting in for the fun. It's almost sickening how much they publicly hate AT&T and Verizon, then they go and lock the S5 bootloader just like them.

Im guessing T-mobile started because people were buying their devices for use on AT&T because of the unlocked bootloader. They dont make money on the devices they make it on the service and locked bootloaders will discourage this practice. My theory, not fact.

I am sorry but I put 0 credibility behind the "SOURCE" for this statement that TMOBILE will have a locked bootloader - I have not even been able to confirm that the LG is locked - it may be that I am looking at the world thru rose colored glasses but I need to see something more than converstationwith an unknown person who may or may not know what they are talking about. The odds are that the S5 will be unlocked on TMOBILE - as an ATT customer using a TMOBILE NOTE 3 - I sure hope that is the case as I plan to buy the S5 when it comes out - if it is locked, I guess I will return it - but until I see more definitive proof - I don't believe it will be

If you are talking about the excerpt of the chat session the insurance guy posted online - then no, that is not enough to convince me. Do you have something more official from TMOBILE that says it is locked? I would love to see it if you do - I don't know who that person was at TOMOBILE - if it was a customer care person from the web site - I give them no credibility at all - you wouldn't believe the number of things they have said that have turned out to be totally untrue -
or are you talking about some sort of official notice that I have not seen?

Wasn't that T-Mobile's official twitter account? Anyway, I hope it is unlocked because everyone has the right to do what they want with their phone, as they own it. As an AT&T customer who used the T-Mobile Note 3, I can tell you that I will not be doing that again in the future. T-Mobile's Note 3 fully supported all of AT&T's bands, but I found LTE reception to be very bad. It was awful in places with low signal, and often would sit on HSPA+.
But my flashing days are over with. I pay for my devices at full price, and I won't risk bricking it with these very hard rooting/flashing procedures. Its just too risky nowadays. Maybe I got spoiled with the easy rooting/flashing methods we had before.
Back to the bootloader... I can see them locking it for the reason that many bought their device for use on AT&T. If the S5 bootloader is locked on T-Mobile then that's a shame. Looks like the "uncarrier" just made a selfish "carrier" move.

I honestly don't know if that was an Official Tmobile Tweet or not - I guess I do wear rose colored glasses - always half full and all of that. I purchased a preorder of the S 5 so I will find out soon enough - if it is locked I will probably return it.
One reason I can think of that t mobile has decided to lock bootloader (if they have) is to cut down on the amount of returns they get from people who brick their device and then return it for a new replacement, hiding the fact that they were rooted or whatever. We may have become o our own worst enemy. I don't knnow how many hundreds - maybe thouhsands of phones have been returned at one time or another from someone claiming the phone was broken when in reality it was bricked because they tried something they shoulnd't have - or flashed a bad file or whatever. If you consider their side of things - you can understand why they might want to plug that hole....
regardless - I am a flashaholic - it is a disease - I need help desperately - lol - but seriously - I do hope we find that these are just rumours and that Tmobile has taken the high road and kept our phones open and "flashable"

I got an unlocked Note 8. Bad idea, good idea, or does it not even matter?

I've always loved to root and install a custom ROM. If I ran into issues I could always run back to Sprint's default OS. Will there be stock samsung software if I run into issues with flashing?
Also, is there any benefit to getting the unlocked vs Sprint version other than being able to use it on other carriers?
Thanks!
Umm... Bad idea, if you're getting it for rooting. To the best of my knowledge the unlocked version won't be anymore able to root than the sprint version because they are both the snapdragon variants made for North America. Unless by unlocked version you mean the international version? That's the only one that will be rooted for a long, long time, if not ever.
Oh wow, really? That sucks. I like being able to customize my phone. If this is the same with unlocked and the Sprint version, I might cancel my pre order :/

FWIW...From what the Samsung rep told me at my local BestBuy.. the Unlocked Note 8 is fully compatible with Verizon and AT&T. You might have some 'features/functionality' that is exclusive to the Sprint version because of the software tweaks that will only work on a Sprint version Note 8.
As you stated to be someone who roots/installs custom ROMs, think of it as why you need to install certain custom kernels, csc files, etc etc to make certain features work.
All "unlocked" means is that it's not locked into one carrier. It has nothing to do with a boot-loader unlock. I'm not saying it's not going to happen but I think the odds are slim. Someone may find a way to root the device which is all I really would like to see.
That really sucks. I guess I mainly liked not having bloatware which I have heard this phone doesn't have.... But I like to customize my menu and every other aspect of the phone. Hopefully the battery life is good compared to the Note 5

Likelyhood of Marshmallow custom ROM?

Hi all,
I recently bought a used S5 (after trying a Z2 and LG G3) and was looking forward to hitting it up with some custom ROM goodness. Unfortunately it turned out to be an AT&T branded phkne which I soon discovered was a pain in the ass to do anything with...
So I was wondering what the chances are of there ever being a Marshmallow custom rom for this model? I can deal with having to stick with the same version of android as stock, but I can't deal with going back a version just to have a custom rom!
Unfortunately, stock marshmallow is soooo laggy and crap, I don't think I can deal with it long term. It feels slower than my previous budget phone from the same period!
I know that there is only root available on LP, but does that prevent you making a MM custom rom? Surely you only need a custom recovery to be able to do this?
Thanks.
So I guess there is no developers left who care about this model...?
The model is AT&T's fraud, so of course not. Courses have been changed in court (and trade-in) before though, and in sideloading in 2015 when GeoHot's TowelRoot was adequate to go sporting with the secure boot bits and unlock the bootloader to set up alternative ROMs. AT&T (alone) claims to have 3500 security peeps on (which I guess you can test if you have a business contract or work for AT&T just to get half-timely patches.) Judging from the recent conference reports there is plenty of fooling the bootloader around to do; but it's harder to do if it's your daily driver, isn't it? Get your (TT/Helium?) backup regime set and try Woot.com for an HTC One M9 ($137ish?) until the ol' Snapdragon 801 / Knox 2.3 TZ get p0wned...publicly.
Betting that the Samsung Ethereum mining cluster made out of old S5s was not done without ROMming a few.

What exactly makes an AT&T S5 different to any other version? Is it just some code in the bootloader?

Not exactly, but close. If the phone detects an operating system other than official software (or close-to-official) then the phone simply locks up and refuses to boot. It tells you to take the phone to an ATT store, but you really don't have to, you just have to flash official software back via ODIN.
