Hi,
I recently installed the 10.1.3 and I love the stability of the ROM. I recently tried to read some magazines on the Nook & I'm facing a peculiar problem where I cannot open any PDF files, EPUB or even Video files. I tried putting the files on the Nook memory and the SD Card too. All Apps (Aldiko, MX Player, etc.) return back the error "Could not load file".
I can't seem to understand what could be the problem here. All files work well on the computer, but nothing on the nook. Could it be a file permission restriction?
Any help would be much appreciated.
I can't help but I am also running 10.1.3 and don't have your issues. I didn't change any settings other than for the launcher. Could there be a problem with the gapps version you installed?
Sent from my BN Nook HD using xda app-developers app
Open the web browser and if you can read a normal pdf and view a video from youtube then your files are simply not compatible.
Suppose they could be getting corrupted. You didn't say if you tried them from the computer via the sdcard.
I transferred the files from the computer to the internal memory and the SD card, but to no avail. It says "Video could not be loaded" or "File could not be loaded", if a pdf does load - it usually comes as a blank white screen.
How do I check if I have installed the correct Gapps version? I did try and open a pdf from the web browser, I faced the same problem.

Go into Google play and download "Foxit MobilePdf". You should be golden.
[I may have forgotten earlier, that possibly all mobile web browser's can't view pdf files, or at least the one(s) you have can't do so. For instance, Firefox downloads them, but can't view them. You would still need a viewer, which I think you never installed one on android and hence your problem.]

I am having a problem with the Nook app on CM7 (using the 4th nightly and the OC kernel.)
Doing some quick searching and extensive looking hasn't yielded any results directly related to the following issue.
When looking in my library, if I try to download a book it just says "No such file or directory" and my other books that are on my SD card don't show up/can't open them with the app (No Application Found).
So, just wondering if anyone else has got this working, I would really like to use this as an e-reader.
Thanks
Ran into the same problem last night

Tried that solution and it doesnt work when trying to download books. I always get file type not supported. You?
yes, it does work when downloading books. make sure you follow it exactly.
you have to set the EXTERNAL_STORAGE value to /sdcard like it says and NOT /mnt/sdcard

I did change that but I didnt notice that I had to type out adb shell before typing su for the apk. I get permission denied, does that mean I missed something while rooting my nook?
Edit:
NM adb shell works, just didnt work from terminal emulator. Anyways tried everything from adb and a computer and still no dice. I have no clue why this is not working. The books in my files dont have the cover and when I click on it it looks like it will load then just goes back to my files again.
NM, it seems that the books that were already in my library from when I had the regular nook OS was giving me issues. I went to shop for a new free book to see what happened and it downloaded and worked. So I did it right from the beginning but kept trying the same 2 stupid books. lol Thanks
I'm not sure what's going on here.
I tried following through with the directions posted in the link. But my adb shell seems to be repeating whatever I type after I press enter. It doesn't seem to be working.
Is there something I'm doing wrong?
I'm using phiremod.
Okay, so I found something... I think.
I did export EXTERNAL_STORAGE /sdcard
and I got
export: /sdcard: bad variable name
Any suggestions?
WORKING Nook ereader app on Nook Color running CM7 from sd card
I wanted to be able to have access to 2 barnes and noble libraries on the same device. I looked around and this is what I came up with. You don't need to do any really tricky or invasive mods and it works great. I'm mostly a moron so I wrote this for people who are like me, please don't be offended if you have to say "well duh" alot.
I would read the notes at the bottom of the post after you read this.
1. I prepared a CM7 sd card with google apps!!! using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
***(I used the stable CM-7.1.0-RC-1-encore-signed version + current gapps, but it should work with any current CM7 nightly)
2. I powered down my nook completely, inserted the CM7 sd card, powered it back up, and let the CM7 installer routine run. The installer shuts the nook off when complete, then I rebooted into CM7. After registering to my google acct and getting to the home screen, I clicked on the icon in the bottom left corner (3 little horizontal lines) and selected Settings>Applications>Unknown sources...check that box.
3. Opened the Market app. Searched for "appinstaller" and installed AppInstaller by FunTrigger. Then I completely powered down my nook and removed the CM7 sd card.
4. Then I downloaded an older version of the Nook ereader app (ver 2.5) and put it somewhere in my filesystem that was easy to locate (you will be locating it from linux) from here:
http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/nook
5. Then on a PC running Linux (ubuntu 11), I plugged the sd card I put CM7 on into my computer. In linux you can see all the partitions...in windows all you can see is boot. I opened the "CM7 SD CARD" partition, and I put the nook.apk file I downloaded from freewarelovers right in there.
6. I reinserted the CM7 sd card into my nook and booted it back up. I went to applications, ran AppInstaller and clicked on the "nook.apk" icon and installed it. Registered my B&N account normally and populated my library.
Notes:
* DO NOT add the nook.apk into the native OS. This is only for CM7. If you try to add this app to an OS with the native nook reader working (unrooted/nootered) the device gets stuck in a boot loop which you will have to use CWM or 8 fail boots to recover from.
* I bear no responsibility for any damage you may do to your device by using this method. That said, it is almost impossible to brick a nook color, especially using a sideload OS. If you think you did just look around the forums, there is lots of information on how to unbrick a nook color.
* If you do not have Linux running on anything to read the CM7 partitions, you can google "reading ext4 filesystems in Windows" and figure out how to do that. Mac is Unix based, so maybe you could use a mac and just hope no one finds out. I highly suggest you just make a live CD by following the directions here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
* Incidentally, you can use this method for sideloading any apps into your sd-based CM7 environment.
Why would you need to sideload the Nook app? Is it hiding in the market these days??
No it's there but you can't download it. Either says invalid device or it won't give you the option to install at all.
EDIT: I updated to a current nightly and it allowed me to download the ver 2.6 Nook reader, but the sign in screen is garbled and it won't communicate with the B&N servers. Had a similar issue with Netflix, which I also sideloaded an older version of and works well.
@ mastigia.
Firstly, very appreciate your effort and post instructions for others.
Secondly, why would you want to go with that route?
At least, there are 2 options installing Nook App with ease.
a. Download and install directly from Market. (see note 1)
b. If for sideloading, just use usb cable to tranfer the .apk over, no need to remove the uSD then insert into Linux just to copy the file.
Note 1: If you can't see Nook App on the Market, then fix your Market first.
Note 2: another option (would be 3rd) is using ADB (either over USB or wireless to push file over)
why oh why

Ok...
a. I CAN see the app on the market. The app currently available is ver 2.7 which from the previous build of CM7 I was using had "Incompatible Device" where the "Install" button would normally be. So, I updated to CM7 nightly 209 thinking I was an idiot. And hey, whaddya know, that made it possible for me to install the 2.7 reader from the market. But it was garbled and would not communicate with the B&N servers and caused me some really crappy synching issues later which I won't go into here.
b. This is just for getting the nook.apk onto CM7 loaded on an sd card. The prob with just moving the file over usb is that windows (which I started off using) will only pick up my native emmc because the sd card partition I want to move the .apk to is in an ext4 partition. Using adb wireless I was unable to find the mount point, once again probably for the same reason.
So, to clean that up I would say just plug your nook into linux and move the file over usb and that would probably work and thanks for the suggestion, I just did not think of that.
Ya know this is kind of a silly and unique issue. I got my gf a nook color, she wants her own library and an unrooted nook (warranty). She also wants access to MY library (which has alot of books she would like to read) and apps like netflix (which also requires a legacy version). Books are the primary reason we got nooks. So for someone like ME, thats the post I would need.
Anybody having force close issues with the latest Nook app? I'm running 213 and I can download but anytime I try to open anything I get a force close.
Hi, i just followed a procedure to install the Quickoffice.apk on my Nook Color. In this procedure i unistalled the quickoffice_viewer that the Nook has for reading the PDF files. This is because it can not be two similar apps installed.
The issue that i have rigth now is that when i try to open a PDF file from the Nook Home it doesn't work, like it was trying to find the quickoffice_viewer and dont find it.
Is there a way t´hat i can tell the Nook Home that for opening PDF or Office files it has to use the new Quickoffice appliucation installed instead of the quickoffice_viewer?
Thank you
Hi just looking for some advice with drm pdfs on the rooted color nook using the cm7 sd card boot .
I joined the singapore library . I can down load epub direct to my rooted nook using overdrive media console . However with drm pdfs I have to download to my computer first and sideload . I have digital editions installed and an adobe id set up .
I can view the drm protected pdfs through digital editions on my computer. I can also view these files on my stock nook color after sideloading . However I would like to be able to view when running the cm7 on sd card .
I have aldiko premium on the rooted nook and i have authorised the rooted nook with the adobe id the same as my computer .
Now I installed dropbox and I get asked what to use to open the drm pdfs . I use aldiko premium but it comes up can not open file . Then I tried the dropbox public folder with the calibre library and the calibre2opd . I set up under catalogs in the aldiko premium. The adobe id is authorised but when I go to open the file it says cant open file .
I have uninstalled the digital editions and redone the authorisation 3 times . Just not sure what to try yet . I was under the impression that aldiko would open drm pdf files with authorisation .Any help would be gratefully accepted
Just a shot in the dark...try to freeze drm.apk in system/apps/ with titanium and see if that will work..or delete the file with adb...or rename that file with root explorer...what needs to be done is get rid of it....make a backup first of course...do one of the above and reboot..I don't know if it will work..I always remove that file on all my android installs and never had a problem.
I installed astro file manager and the issues I was having resolved
Now that the Galaxy Tab 4 Nook is out, how hard would it be to pull the Nook files and create a cwm-flashable zip so we could get access to the Nook app store and potentially a better reader app and the UI on our Nook HD/HD+ running CM11?
I have been wondering the same thing for my devices. I actually went so far as to get the apk for the apps. However, when I loaded the apk and logged in, the device would run the apps but I could not do anything once inside and the kids section would not show the books that I have. I could see the books I had in the regular books section but I could not read any of them. It gave me a message about not being able to download to this device. I have no knowledge of editing the apk for use but I'll put it out there for people to work on.
Anyone have a idea of how to modify this apk to get it to work on CM11 or other ROMS?
The app probably has a build-in prevention to not allow the non-stock rom to run.
OK, I'm certain I'm about to show my ignorance but, why does this link not download NookApp.apk?
That's what the link says but the actual file downloaded was NookApp.zip, and there is no apk file inside. Is an apk file just a wrapper, similar to epub, so that I can change the name from apk to zip to look inside? Can I just rename NookApp.zip to NookApp.apk? I want to poke around with this but I'm confused.
Thanks.

Yes, an apk is really a special zip that has been renamed so that it can be installed in android. So yes, you should be able to just rename it to apk so it can be installed. And any apk can be renamed a zip and explored.
Edit: It really does download as an apk. Your software may have recognized it as a zip as part of downloading and renamed it to a zip. (Or Windows may just be displaying it as a zip if you have Windows set to not show extensions of known file types). But what I said above holds.

I see you're right. I was using IE11 and it downloads as a zip. If I download using Firefox, it downloads as an apk. Strange. I've never ran into that before.
Thanks.

Alright. The nook app let's me log in and empty categories. However I do not know what directories it is looking for things in since nothing has anything in it. Also shop will not load, as in it loads, but says no data found.
Using cm11, m11 build.

So we should be able to create/modify that folder to trick it into working or is there more to it than that. It will see some of my books but I can't access them.

Thanks hmiem81 for posting the apk. I can also see my books, but not download them. Also, it says not authorized on this device. That makes me wonder if messing with the build.prop might fix it? But I don't know the info for the Galaxy Tab Nook.
Update: it created a NOOK folder, so I assume files should be placed in the appropriate subfolder. However, it won't recognize that any files are there. Also, even though it registers as an epub reader, when I try to open an epub from a file manager it crashes, so it can't be used to read drm-free epubs either.
Does anybody have the latest apk for version 1.2.1.120? I'd also be grateful if somebody could post the build.prop from a Galaxy Tab Nook. Thanks.
Hello people it's just to report and see if any of you have faced a skmilar problem and how To solve it.
The main problem is that all files pdfs, jpgs or any other that are sent to me via WhatsApp it's impossible to open with any app. All apps say the file is corrupted or something like that. The same happens with Edison Mail (app) I use it to have all my mails synced, but the same happens all mails that contain attached files are imposible to open the external apps to open pdf or image files say it's impossible or file corrupted.
Nevertheless, and the main thing is that those files are NOT CORRUPTED whatsoever, if I look for the files on the internal storage and open them with any of the apps that said that the same files were corrupted, the files open without any problem.
I was going to reinstall WhatsApp, but in the end I didn't because it's really time consuming to make a backup and because I realized it was happening with other apps (probably with others I haven't come across).
I have checked permissions, disabled /enabled them but with no luck.
Any thoughts or similar experiences? Any workaround?

This problem isnt occuring for me. It opens for me fine. Maybe it could be an issue with the pdf reader?
What do you mean when you say, it is impossible to open pdfs in external apps?
Im assuming you have tried different pdf apps as well? Try opening the file from the pdf app itself, as in navigating to the file from inside the pdf app, rather than opening it directly in whatsapp.

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.
If I open the files directly from the pdf reader (I've used several, acrobat, xodo, drive, onedrive, etc) or opening the files from a file explorer (solid explorer, xiaomi file explorer) they open, they are not corrupted.
The problem is when I tap on the attached file on the whatsapp chat or on the edison mail (app) The prompt to select an app to open the file shows up but no matter which one I select it will FC or say the file is unreadable or corruupted (depending the app). That is why I believed the problem was regarding some permissions in whatsapp or edison mail, but I've enabled and disabled them with no avail.
If you google this problem, hilariously you can find a very similar one on an Adobe forum but of course there's no solution because the adobe won't provide a solution that is not directly caused by their apps. The only good comment there is that apparently it's an andorid 11 problem on MIUI devices.
Some mention to disable MIUI optimizations, which I've already tried enabling and disabling because I usually have them disabled.

Yes, it certainly seems like an miui problem or the A11 problem. Okay, do one thing, try opening the pdf file via chrome browser, or any other app, maybe gmail app.
Also, before you do that, download matlog to log what happens, maybe we can try pin pointing the issue.
If its just an app thing, then maybe reinstalling should fix it. But i doubt it is. And the only real possibility seems like reinstalling the rom.
Heres a suggestion, since we dont have twrp yet.
Download the latest full rom, a few issues happened to me earlier, when i installed miui in one of the incremental updates.
So, what i did was, downloaded the entire recovery rom (not fastboot) and just updated the system via system update by locally installing it.
Just google how to local upgrade on miui if you're not clear about it. As i wasn't since this is my first miui phone.
This would essentially dirty flash a stock rom, and should iron out any issues without having to reset the phone.
Is your MIUI optimisation option disabled in the developers options? If so, try enabling it and try to open the files again.

Here are the logs. Actually by doing so, I discovered that also sharing a zip file from the matlog to any app to upload or share it (whatsapp, gdrive, onedrive, etc.) also resulted in an similar error (this part is not included on the logs).
The logs include trying to open one file in two different apps. Gdrive pdf reader and Xodo.

Actually I hadn't tried that, Just did and leaving MIUI Optimizations enabled makes the problem disappear, in fact, the promt to select the app to open the file is different.
But what if I want to leave MIUI Optimizations disabled?

I don't think there's a solution for this. I think the best workaround for this problem would be switching to Xiaomi.eu rom (since they have MIUI optimisiation disabled by default) but it's still not released yet.
I could be wrong though.

Im assuming the miui has its own code for the app selector and the underlying android 11 app selector code is disabled. Probably to speed up the process of switching apps. Maybe if there is a way if you can enable the original android 11 code for it then you could disable the miui optimization setting. But then, if this is just for the app selector, there could be other underlying issues, that you might have not have experienced yet where miui uses its own implementation and has disabled the original android implementation. I wouldnt recommend that unless you decide to switch roms to the EU version for this specific issue like @brzi6 mentioned but i think theres no point as it could cause other location based hassles.
Firstly, miui optimization is garbage anyway.
Secondly, the problem is with app permissions. If you can get your pdf viewer of choice to have access to your file system then all will be well.
