I just bought a new xperia z when i opened it the device said there is a new update so i updated the phone however after two weeks i filled the internal storage and there is no space left so i asked my friends they told me that i need something called root which will void my warranty ( i don't really have a warranty it's an international one ) so that weekend i searched for the root but i didn't find a thing because i am 4.3 which has no root so i need some help here are my questions
1. Is there any way to root sony xperia z on 4.3 ?
2. If there is no way to root on 4.3 what should i do ?
3. If i rooted the phone what is the next step to move the apps into external sd card ?
4. I heard about something called CWM what is that ?
5. If i bricked my phone will there an easy way to fix it ?
as i mentioned i am new to android i am literally Noob so can you tell me everything as simple and detailed as possible
Thanks in Advance
1. You can just root the 4.3 if you unlock your Bootloader. That means also you loose the warranty. Rooting your phone does not void your warranty.
2. Flash a prerooted rom. There are many in the Z forum.
3. It isn't possible to move the apps to the ext. Sd-card.
4. CWM is a recovery.
5. Easy is it for guys which know what they do. But you have to know there are 2 types of bricks. A softbricked phone you can unbrick. After hardbricking a phone, you can put it in to the toilet. So if you hardbrick, it is over.

First of all i would like to thank you sir for replying
Second can you please send me a link on how to unlock the bootloader and rooting the device
Third when i was surfing i read that it's possible by using programs like link2sd and folder mount
Finally what is hard hardbricking to avoid it

First you must to be on Android 4.2.2 firmware 10.3.1.A.0.244/2.67 to root it
Rooting guide here
For unlocking bootloader is to use custom kernels / KitKat / CM ROM
For bootloader unlocking guide here
And for Link2SD i think it don't support
Lastly hardbricking means you flashed Xperia Z2 kernel / ftf on your Xperia Z,that will cause hardbricking...
1. can you send me a link on how to downgrade my firmware ?
2. Am i going to lose the apps i installed ?

Yes, you will lose all the apps who are installed. You can reinstall them later though.
Downgrading is easy, just download a 4.2.2 ftf file, for example this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/general/stock-rom-xperia-z-c6603-10-3-1-2-67-t2464364
Next is to install flashtool, and all the drivers :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/orig-development/tool-z-flashtool-version-0-9-11-0-t2162907
Then flash this .ftf file and make sure to wipe the phone

There is no direct method to root the phone. You need to downgrade first. Use this guide to get root on .290 first:

Just unlock the freakin bootloader already like i did last night. and use flashtool 9.11 instead of 9.13 for some reason it keeps installing the wrong driver for the phone which results in a header error.

I don't know if you know that the v.9.11 is not recommended with Z1 and you risk to brick your phone. Unlocking Bootloader is needed for Custom Kernel only and if you do that you will lose Warranty and some features. Just follow the Video and you will be fine. BTW, windows installed the drivers for me and all was fine.

The finally way to get full Root was:
Downgrade to .134 (NUT's provide) Root and Install the last XZDual Recovery (NUT provide)
In TWRP Flash iHakers 2.1 (minimal) Before boot to system, Flash Lastest XZDual Recovery (NUT provide) and flash lastest Supersu Zip Flashable (Chainfire provide)
Boot to system and restore all my apps with TB open each and every one app that needs root to get it (root)
Go back to TWRP and Now Flash .136 (NUT provide) With only wipe cache and dalvik cache (this is important because is the only way that a could gets the root in .136) Flash again last Supersu.zip flashable.
Turn off my phone And flash the properly stripped.ftf provided by NUT, turn on my phone and get full root.
(in other ways only gets partialy root)
In the NUT thread some people have same problem like mine (Even NUT comment it)
Sorry my english, to bad
Thanks all for your help.

In Flashtool uncheck "Wipe Data". In PC Companion use Backup & Restore, Update and if you lost something Restore with PC Companion.
Guys i got the phone recently, i unlocked my bootloader yesterday and i am on 136 now... I dont want to bother with downgrading and so on but i don't have root nor recovery... can't i just flash something rooted with flashtool so that afterwards i'll be able to just flash through recovery on the phone?
I moved from an Xperia S and none of these issues existed there...
Thank you in advance.
Oh nevermind gentlemen, thanks for the help
I Solved the issue by simply installing Ihackers advanced kernel.img trough Flashtool with the fastboot method... Pretty simple it got me an instant recovery and trough it i rooted and then installed SuperSU from the playstore... I finally understood the general concept...
P.S. I am with an unlocked bootloader so thats why i managed to install the kernel...
Hey guys. i have bought the xperia z1(from INDIA) four months back, model- C6902, firmware- 14.2.A.1.136 android version 4.3
Today i heard that the kitkat update that is coming to my z1 will not have the xperia Z2 features like 4k recording, smart call handling etc..
But i am desperate to get those features.. so i am thinking to root my phone and use those apps provided in xda..
Before rooting my phone i just need your help guys.. i have gone through many threads to know about rooting and flashing.. But as a newbie i have several doubts..
1. I found somewhere to root my phone i need to downgrade to 4.2.2.. Can i root my phone on 4.3..??
2. Which one should be done first.. Rooting or flashing..??
3. Should i need to flash any rom to use the xperia Z2 apps..??
4. How to backup the original ROM of my phone so that i can restore it later..??
5. After rooting the phone will sony provide me the update of 4.4.2...??
and the most important one..
6. I know rooting will void my phone's warranty.. But in case i do something wrong and my phone goes dead.. then..??
i have accidental damage warranty for six months.. If i break my phone into pieces and then submit it to the service center, will they be able to know that i have voided my warranty..??

1) If there is a way to root 4.4 directly then there will be instructions given on how to do that in that thread
2) If not, then you downgrade by flashing a 4.2 ftf, root, install recovery flash a pre-rooted rom. All instructions are given in the relevant threads about flashing FTF files, rooting, installing recovery and how to flash a pre-rooted ROM. These instructions can vary slightly so its best to read the instructions from the OP of the relevant thread.
Okk mate.. One more doubt..
Can u plz tell me whether they can know my root status thru their online database or not??

There is no such thing. No Sony phones are released with an unlocked bootloader. (Please don't confuse sim unlock with bootloader unlock)
they can tell if you have an unlocked bootloader very easily when connected to PCCompanion and then PCCompanion will say it wont update your phone.
Thanks mate... Now i can feel free to root or flash my phone.. If anything wrong happens then i will smash my phone and ask for a replacement
Thanks to accidental damage program by SONY :good:

That's a bit extreme (Not to say fraudulent)
You can just flash a stock FTF or use the official Sony program (PCCompanion) to repair your phone without the hassle of smashing your phone up and making a fraudulent claim which just bumps the insurance and cost up for all users.
Can i repair my phone via PC Companion if it gets bricked..??

No, that's the definition of a brick. But you wont brick your phone if you just root or flash roms.
You may "soft" brick it, but that's not really a brick, and in that case you can repair using flashtool and/or pccompanion
I am just acting like i have understood everything
I will only understand about these things when i will experience on it.. BTW thanks a ton mate.. you have helped me a lot.. :good:
Hello everyone,
I am new here and I'm having really hard time going around the forums and searching for what I seek and everything is so confusing and I really need someone's help. I've never done this and it terrifies me to screw up my phone. Here's the deal, I want to root my Sony Xperia Z so I can remove the useless built in apps and maybe get a cool theme. I've been looking for threads but there are so many and I don't know which one to take, most talk about some firmware I don't even know what that is but I looked a bit on the internet and found out which is so here are my phone specs:
Sony Xperia Z

Any help would be appreciated, thank you so much.

Welcome to xda where everyone starts off as a noob
Don't worry we all make mistakes hopefully a moderator will move it in the right place.
Now to answer your questions
a) A firmware is the software installed on your device you have got it right in your specs.
b) The method of rooting depends on the firmware. The firmware you have does not allow easy rooting.
You have two options since your bootloader can be unlocked
1) Backup your ta partition using the backup utility and store it on your computer. Unlock your bootloader and root your device by following the guide posted by cookie ninja in the xperia z
android development section
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2656698
[GUIDE][ROOT] How to Root 101 Firmware and regain LB
2) Downgrade your firmware to android 4.2.2 by flashing an FTF file using flashtool (you can find these in the development section as well) and then root using doomlords rooting toolkit. You can then upgrade to even android 4.4 by flashing any of the pre rooted roms from the development section.
All the best.

Hi
Welcome to xda
First you cant root 4.3 only if unlock bootloader and the unlock not hard but better try downgrade to 4.2.2:
Download a software called flashtool from here and install it then after install finish go to the place where you install flashtool and find folder called DRIVERS open it and you will find an exe file open it and select xperia z- flashmode drivers - fastboot drivers then install
Get an FTF file for flashtool like that
After the ftf download finish put the ftf file in "frimware" folder in the place you installed flashtool
Open flashtool then click the lighning icon
Select your downloaded FTF
After few minutes you will see screen appear says WAITING FOR FLASH MODE
Turn off you phone
Hold the volume down button then connect your phone with your pc with usb cable
After few minutes you will see your phone downgradedto 4.2.2
THIS WILL DELETE ALL YOU APPS AND DATA IN YOUR PHONE!!! So better make backup!!.the phone must charged to 80%
Now root your device with kingo root this tool not working on 4.3 that why i said must DOWNGRADE
Install CWM and TWRP recovery here
After finish get a PREROOTED ROM like this
Flash it in recovery
Now we finished
Other notes: the flashtool and FTF can repair your phone if bricked so dont panic if that happened just use the lighting icon:angel:
Hit thanks if helped

Sony smartphones are nearly impossible to hard brick, unless you restored a wrong bootloader TA partition.(the one not from your own device)
The worst case scenario which you can get is total wipeout of every data you have on your phone, so always make a backup of things you need before doing anything.
The things you will need:
1.Basic computer skills
2.Knowing the bootloader of your phone
3.Knowing how to use custom recovery (cwm or twrp)
4.Knowing how to use flashtool
5.Keep a backup of firmware files (ftf) in case anything happen
6.Always check the forum in case the old backup of something of yours won't work in your phone after you updated
Thank you guys, you're all wonderful.

If you want stock unmodded one you can do it without root. And if you want a rooted with dual recovery you will need root
But I advise you not to use stock kitkat because its lags alot and low battery life
Try those if you want:
Stock no root needed ( flash via flashtool)
Modded and fast with Root and recoveryROOT NEEDED
Thanks!

First of all we have many dedicated threads to teach you step by step about rooting XZR.
For help I can give you a hint of how you must do it in short :-
1. Downgrade your phone from Kitkat to jellybean 4.1
2. Download doomloard's toolkit to root phone without unlocking bootloader.
3. As now you you have rooted your phone, now download Backup TA toolkit to backup your TA so as to keep bravia and warranty for your phone for future. Save this TA backup file with your life.
4. Now Upgrade to Kitkat. As now you have your TA backup, you can unlock bootloader from Sony Developer site help.
5. You can look for a software called Flashtool and download it. This is going to help you in further things.
6. Now unlock your bootloader.
7. Now Flash a boot image which has a recovery and is for XZR.
8. Download a flashable zip file for installing SuperSU.
9. Flash that file using that recovery.
10. Flash the kernel from the downloaded firmware of Kitkat using flashtool.
11. Start your phone and you may find SuperSU installed in your phone.
12. Now comes the part to keep your Bravia engine alive. As you have taken a backup of your TA, open the Backup TA tool after activating developer mode and USB Debugging.
13. Then connect your phone, restore TA partition to your phone.
14. Now what you have is :- i). Rooted Kitkat on phone. ii). TA partition for future restoring of your TA after unlocking the phone.
All these above steps I have written here have a altogether a complete explanation. Now it's your turn to read them from here XDA. Go ahead and read more before asking anymore. The more you read, the less noob you are. :good:

All these above steps I have written here have a altogether a complete explanation. Now it's your turn to read them from here XDA. Go ahead and read more before asking anymore. The more you read, the less noob you are. :good:

Thank you for this guide. I really really appreciate it.
1. Wanted to know if it's not a problem to downgrade directly from 4.4.2 to 4.1/4.2?
2. No special things required to do? Just back up user data?
3. Use androxyde flashtool and use any region 4.1/4.2?
Just wanted to really make sure before i try doing this. Since i bought the phone recently and kitkat is just killing me with sdcard restrictions.

What you really need is right ftf file for your phone region isn't the problem and yes there is nothing special required to downgrade from any version to any version as far as ftf file is correct and is for correct device. You are good to go :good::good:
You can try root your zr kit kat use Towelroot. Some of the z and zr owners managed to get root even in lock bootloader. I already tested on my zr JB 4.3. Lockbootloader. Work flawlessly.
I did it!

Well as you have backed up your ta now you can choose any rooting methods available. It could be conventional method that we already know our it could be the towel root that our friend here is talking about. Enjoy being the real admin of your device

You did nothing wrong. Link2SD or alike won't work on 4.2 and up . If you need to move apps to the SDCard you'll have to use FolderMount. You can move up to 3 data folders with the free version and it works great especially if you have apps with big data folders (like games). However, if you need to move more than 3 data folders, you'll have to get the Premium version.
Good going.

Our friend here is right. These apps were made for gingerbread mainly, and alas they don't work on JB+. So what you need to do is understand more about folder mount before starting to use it. Learn more about it before making your move.
Silly question perhaps i don't know about. I'm on a stock ROM, rooted, still locked bootloader, and I cannot enter stock recovery. How do i possibly do that? I used the power+volup, power+voldwn, used root power options to boot recovery but I cannot.
Any information should help.
Thanks guys.

There is no recovery in stock.
Install one for XZR. @sijav has nice working dual recovery on the forum here for XZR, I personally use that as it doesn't require us to unlock bootloader. Here you can find it :- Dual Recovery
Press thanks if I helped

Is there a way to unroot?
Hi everyone!
I have a question about unrooting the XZR.
Can you, after you have rooted the XZR make the root without problems again reversed (unrooted)?
I imagine that, it should work but if you reflashing an original Sony software with the flash tool, then it should be in original condition.
I dont know a counter for root till now.
Because if that were possible, then the "disputes" in a warranty claim would be gone. Easy original rom flashing over it with the flash tool and ready.
Or is there my way of thinking wrong?
Greeting Lemmi.
Flashing the stock rom in flashtool should be enough to get it unrooted

Correct
No need to unlock bootloader for rooting now
Hope that root will stay after next OTA to .233. This is needed cause of the Google Service akku drain problem.
Maybe it will come soon and new root method is still working.

Temporarily disabling location made my phone not drain battery as much.
Other way to uproot the zr is thru superSU. Download from playstore. Open the SuperSU go to settings then looking for full unroot. You will prompt a message. I use this method unroot my zr last time.

You can unroot your phone by various methods. But be sure you relock your boot loader and put back TA partition (DRM keys) so that sony service centre won't find out you had done anything wrong with your phone

Looking for a simple way to root XZR
Guys. Is there a simple method to root your phone?
For Ex: I had a Samsung device earlier
Just download the root ZIP file and place it in SD card and then flash it using a simple method. Hold Vol + power button it will take you to the recovery mode and then you can flash the ZIP file.
Next : Power on your phone and then install Titanium backup and give it root access to SuperSu and easily you can move apps to your SD card after opening the Titatnium backup or Apps2SD.
Guys your opinion please
