[Q] A noob in need of help.. - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I am new here and I'm having really hard time going around the forums and searching for what I seek and everything is so confusing and I really need someone's help. I've never done this and it terrifies me to screw up my phone. Here's the deal, I want to root my Sony Xperia Z so I can remove the useless built in apps and maybe get a cool theme. I've been looking for threads but there are so many and I don't know which one to take, most talk about some firmware I don't even know what that is but I looked a bit on the internet and found out which is so here are my phone specs:
Sony Xperia Z
C6603
4.3 Jelly Bean
Bootloader unlock allowed: Yes
Firmware thing: 10.4.B.0.569
Any help would be appreciated, thank you so much.

Wrong section buddy. Should be in the q and a section and you can actually ask in the help thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2345372
I would love to answer your question but I'm on my phone, very limited on what I can do atm.

Welcome to xda where everyone starts off as a noob
Don't worry we all make mistakes hopefully a moderator will move it in the right place.
Now to answer your questions
a) A firmware is the software installed on your device you have got it right in your specs.
b) The method of rooting depends on the firmware. The firmware you have does not allow easy rooting.
You have two options since your bootloader can be unlocked
1) Backup your ta partition using the backup utility and store it on your computer. Unlock your bootloader and root your device by following the guide posted by cookie ninja in the xperia z
android development section
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2656698
[GUIDE][ROOT] How to Root 101 Firmware and regain LB
2) Downgrade your firmware to android 4.2.2 by flashing an FTF file using flashtool (you can find these in the development section as well) and then root using doomlords rooting toolkit. You can then upgrade to even android 4.4 by flashing any of the pre rooted roms from the development section.
All the best.

Hi
Welcome to xda
First you cant root 4.3 only if unlock bootloader and the unlock not hard but better try downgrade to 4.2.2:
Download a software called flashtool from here and install it then after install finish go to the place where you install flashtool and find folder called DRIVERS open it and you will find an exe file open it and select xperia z- flashmode drivers - fastboot drivers then install
Get an FTF file for flashtool like that
After the ftf download finish put the ftf file in "frimware" folder in the place you installed flashtool
Open flashtool then click the lighning icon
Select your downloaded FTF
After few minutes you will see screen appear says WAITING FOR FLASH MODE
Turn off you phone
Hold the volume down button then connect your phone with your pc with usb cable
After few minutes you will see your phone downgradedto 4.2.2
THIS WILL DELETE ALL YOU APPS AND DATA IN YOUR PHONE!!! So better make backup!!.the phone must charged to 80%
Now root your device with kingo root this tool not working on 4.3 that why i said must DOWNGRADE
Install CWM and TWRP recovery here
After finish get a PREROOTED ROM like this
Flash it in recovery
Now we finished
Other notes: the flashtool and FTF can repair your phone if bricked so dont panic if that happened just use the lighting icon:angel:
Hit thanks if helped

Sony smartphones are nearly impossible to hard brick, unless you restored a wrong bootloader TA partition.(the one not from your own device)
The worst case scenario which you can get is total wipeout of every data you have on your phone, so always make a backup of things you need before doing anything.
The things you will need:
1.Basic computer skills
2.Knowing the bootloader of your phone
3.Knowing how to use custom recovery (cwm or twrp)
4.Knowing how to use flashtool
5.Keep a backup of firmware files (ftf) in case anything happen
6.Always check the forum in case the old backup of something of yours won't work in your phone after you updated

Thank you guys, you're all wonderful.

If you want stock unmodded one you can do it without root. And if you want a rooted with dual recovery you will need root
But I advise you not to use stock kitkat because its lags alot and low battery life
Try those if you want:
Stock no root needed ( flash via flashtool)
Modded and fast with Root and recoveryROOT NEEDED
Thanks!

I made the mistake of unlocking my bootloader without making a backup of my TA, so make sure you don't make the same mistake. Not an issue really unless you REALLY want OTA updates.

Full rooting guide for xperia t lt30p build 7.0.A.3.195

After having many problems rooting my xperia t james bond phone, I decided making a noob-ready tutorial on how to root the xperia t and probably other phones aswell.
No technical stuff, just follow the steps and you will be rooted in no time.
I did this with:
android version 4.0.4
build 7.0.A.3.195
So the very first thing you should do is unlocking your bootloader. Sony has made their own tutorial on how to do this, but It can be a little complicated. Im gonna link you to it and to a videp which explains it very well. I prefer the video myself.
http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0e1DYnoxUm0
After that you will need to unlock recovery mode. You can do this in 2 ways but I prefer the easy one.
The easy one is:
Installing a custom kernel with recovery mode integrated in it.
Use this link to download the kernel or go to the forum thread where I found it:
http://www.mediafire.com/?n4v89r2fvri2wlb
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1922925
Now that you've got the kernel with recovery mode integrated downloaded, we need to flash/install it into the phone.
You need to do this via flashtool. That's atleast the easiest I think.
You can download flashtool from the following website:
http://androxyde.github.com/
Install it. If you have problems installing the drivers for flashtool, you can use this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOC57DfI1zo
Now you need to make sure your phone is on and connected to your pc.
Open flashtool and click on the thunderbolt in the upper left corner.
Select fastboot mode.
Now select "Reboot into fastboot mode (via ADB)"
Wait for it to reboot. There should be a blue light turned on, on your phone.
Now look at your pc screen again. Click on "Select Kernel To Flash"
Select the kernel that I Gave you in the beginning of the tutorial.
Wait for it to install and your mobile probably reboot etc. untill it is on.
Now download Superuser zip file : https://rapidshare.com/#!download|939p5|3415386268|Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip|1324|0|0
Place the Superuser zip file on your mobile phone memory card or internal memory.
Now Turn off your phone completely.
Now we are gonna go into recovery mode to install Superuser.
There are several ways to do this but the one I use is holding both the volume buttons down and then holding the power button aswell.
(I did this when my phone was connected from my pc) or you use this video (skip to 3:31)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fMk0PhA_qc
It should boot into recovery mode. You can use the volume buttons to go up and down and the power button to select. Browse to the sdcard for the superuser.zip file and install it. (the most easy part).
Now go back to the start screen of recovery mode and select reboot into system.
Done, you have now got a fully rooted xperia T lt30p
Please tell me if I missed something. My first post ever lol
This post helped me alot:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1903137
Many thanks for your input here, but it is just a replication of the all in one thread instructions.
Also, to enter recovery mode you just need to press the volume up button when the purple led appears at boot up, you dont need to press all 3 buttons.
Also, you can download the SuperSU.apk directly from the market instead of flashing it in recovery.
Never the less, this is quite comprehensive and i have linked it to the all in one thread.

Yea, I know it's just recycled stuff but it is just for a nooby that doesen't know how to do stuff. I had like 10 tabs opened trying to root my xperia t.
This brings that number down lol
Well its certainly nice to see someones first post as a contibution rather that just asking for questions when the information is already out there.
If your bootloader is locked, to root, just use this, tested and working with a LOCKED bootloader on the Xperia T firmware 7.0.A.1.303 :

This method only works on the older firmware, as is mentioned several time in the all in one thread. If you have updated to the newer firmware 7.0.A.3.*** then THERE IS NO METHOD TO ROOT PHONE WITHOUT UNLOCKING THE BOOTLOADER!

Update via SUES or PCCompanion if your firmware has the official update. If not you can still upgrade via flashtool, just read the all in one thread. All information is there.
However, if you update the only way to root is unlock your bootloader.

Have you checked if you can unlock the bootloader yet? If you cant then you will not be able to root.
Make sure you read the all in one thread fully so you know what you are doing. It would be better if you ask questiosn there, I monitor that thread closely

[Q] Sony Xperia Z bricked after custom 4.3 Rom

Hi All,
Hoping for some advise and hopefully a fix. Been scouring these forums for 4 hours and cannot find a problem the same as mine or one that seems like it would fix.
I've always stuck to nexus phones in the past so the xperia z is new to me. picked it up this weekend but i've already had enough of sony's custom skin so thought i'd get a custom rom.
I updated to the latest software version using the pc suite and then used the xperia z root tool (v16).
After this i downloaded root checker and verified i was rooted
i then downloaded cwm recovery and installed
i then downloaded the 4.3 google edition rom for the xperia z, put it on the sd card and went into recovery, selected it from sd card. said it all installed ok so selected reboot...
after this it didnt come back on and just vibrates once when you press the power button. tried the hard reset thing where it vibrates 3 times but after this it does nothing.
it isnt recognised when plugged in to pc and the only sign of life that i can see is the light flashing red when plugged in as if charging.
Any ideas? never had something not switch on at all before.
Is your bootloader even unlocked?
4.3 roms and all other roms with non stock kernels cannot be flashed on a locked device.

Easy. Just repair with SUS
or
Download flashtool, and download the corresponding firmware you need (should be .ftf format) (i.e. if your a UK generic user download UK generic ROM) and flash the firmware.
fixed
Thanks guys. Flashtool got me back up and running.
Now, just because I'm obviously a complete tool does anyone know off the top of their head if it is actually possible to put the Google edition 4.3 on here after all of that or should I quit while I'm ahead???

Then finally follow instrustions from here and flash this rom : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2389823
It is an advanced build of 4.3 based on CM 10.2.
Remember to fastboot flash boot.img of kernel before flashing it form recovery.
If all that seems too complicated then i advice you don't attempt it right away, read around the XDA forum and familiarise yourself before attempting to brick your phone :silly:
Dude does your bootloader unlocked? If not maybe it cause u a soft brick. Try to flash the original ftf for xperia z use the latest flash tool then reflash it. Hope it helps you. Btw welcome to the SONY world ;p

Which needs unlocked bootloader, correct?
Which additional drivers need to be installed?
Is there a way to downgrade with locked bootloader? I am actually ok with the function of .199 but not with it's tons of bloat, and no way to install certain apps. No root is almost like having no sex ever.

Of course yes, flashtool is both for locked and unlocked bootloaders! The drivers I always install is something called "Gordon Gate driver", the FlashTool itself and this is enough for the phone to be recognized while plugging. Be sure to plug in the phone one time in flash mode before the final flashing so that the PC recognizes it and installs drivers, after that unplug it for a while and turn it off again because it will probably turn on, it always happens in my case when I plug the phone for the first time after f.e. installing a brand new OS and not every drivers are installed. Then run FlashTool and you can start the magic!
But, you can always disable certain apps in Settings>Apps>All. You will be actually freezing them (just like with titanium backup) but it's pretty useful. Aaaaand there are two ways of flashing recovery on locked bootloaders so that you can i.e. flash SuperSU .zip file with the app and appropriate binaries (you can find it on its dedicated thread here on XDA), that's what I'm always doing.
My phone is T. Xperia T.

Ok, I have still a notebook somewhere in the corner running XP. I'll see what this one can do. If I can downgrade to 4.12, then I can rrooooot that one. At least I would not feel so naked and vulnerable anymore.
Can Flashtool make a mirror or image of the current ROM?
And thanks bunches for your helpful answer!
Here are the rough steps to downgrade:
- use a PC which runs Windump XP or 7
- install Flashtool
- install drivers (in the Flashtool drivers folder)
- download a 4.12 FTF of your choice. Nordic and Singapore seem pretty good.
- switch phone to USB debugging
- open Flashtool, click on the flash symbol and chose flashmode, follow the instructions, don't disable any of the flashing options
- after successful installation root with DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v17_perf-event-exploit
- after successful rooting update SuperSu
- install recovery CWM4XperiaT_v8i_JB
From here you can install a rooted 4.3 if you can live with it's shortcomings, or any 4.2. I choose Pure-X-Blaster 4.2.2.

[GUIDE][HOW-TO][T/TX/V]Root Guide On Android 4.3 For Locked Bootloaders

IMPORTANT:
This method is now obsolete and not needed, we are able to root directly onto 4.3 now thanks to geohot, please see towelroot thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783157
OLD METHOD:
I see many threads about rooting Android 4.3, especially with locked bootloaders, along with many users getting confused about it so decided to make this guide on how to get root on your Android 4.3 device
Unfortunately there is no method to root directly on the Xperia T/TL/TX/V with Android 4.3, we must downgrade first!
Step 1, Getting flashtool installed:
You need to download flashtool and install the latest drivers, this can all be found here and here
Step 2, Getting your device running Android 4.1.2 which is rootable!:
You need to download a 4.1.2 FTF file, I recommend using this one if you are an Xperia T user,
Use this one if you are an Xperia V user.
Use this one if you are an Xperia TX user
although any will do as long as has a build number earlier than 9.1.A.1.141
Next what you need to do is open up flashtool which you installed in Step 1. Next click on the lightning bolt button which is the flash button, flashmode should be selected by default, click OK!
Now you are in the firmware selection area, navigate to where you downloaded the FTF file using the browse button in the top right.
Select the correct firmware, then click OK!
It'll process a bit, then will tell you to connect your device, firstly put your cable into the computer/laptop first, then hold down the volume down button on your device and connect the micro USB part to the device.
If all goes well it will start flashing, finish and tell you to restart the phone, the process could easily take 15 minutes, so be patient.
Step 3, Lets root the device:
Try rooting with the root option within FlashTool
Should that not work try this:
You want to download bin4rys rooting toolkit, which is found here and here
This part you will be walked through in the command prompt of the toolkit, it will tell you what to do and when, it is very simple!
Step 4, Now we're rooted, we want a recovery:
Now we need to get CWM recovery for locked bootloaders installed!
Download CWM installer here
Next extract the folder to somewhere on your computer, connect your phone to the computer, remember to allow unknown sources to be installed and to allow usb debugging, these can be found in 'security' and 'developer options' respectively.
Once done, double click on 'install.bat' and let the installer do it's magic.
If you have issues with this step, take a look at the 'Unable to enter recovery' section in the CWM for locked bootloaders thread here
Step 5, Download a rooted 4.3 update:
If you are an Xperia T user download from here
If you are an Xperia V user download from here
If you are an Xperia TX user download from here
Now transfer the package to the SD card on your device.
Next you want to power off your device, once that is done power back on, when you hit the first vibrate you should see a blue led, start repeatedly pressing the volume up button, the led should turn green and you will enter into CWM recovery.
RECOMMENDED: Now you are in recovery you should do a complete wipe data/factory reset, now this can be skipped but if it leads to errors and problems then you may need to go back to step 1, you have been warned!
Head to install zip from SD card and locate to where you downloaded the file, then flash the file!
Step 6, Enjoy:
You should now be all up to date with Android 4.3 and have root access, feel free to comment and ask questions in the thread if you are having problems or things didn't work as they should.
You also now should have PhilZ Touch Recovery installed which will allow you to install mods, make backups etc. To enter it is the exact same procedure as for CWM earlier on!

Fair enough, if it works for some people they can go this method. OTA updates with root isn't fool proof though so some users may find they loose it.
This is also more for people who have already OTA updated and don't have root

If you are on 4.1.2 then you can root and backup your data with Titanium Backup, If you're already on 4.3 and have to downgrade then you will have to wipe, otherwise you can get into problems

First of all we have many dedicated threads to teach you step by step about rooting XZR.
For help I can give you a hint of how you must do it in short :-
1. Downgrade your phone from Kitkat to jellybean 4.1
2. Download doomloard's toolkit to root phone without unlocking bootloader.
3. As now you you have rooted your phone, now download Backup TA toolkit to backup your TA so as to keep bravia and warranty for your phone for future. Save this TA backup file with your life.
4. Now Upgrade to Kitkat. As now you have your TA backup, you can unlock bootloader from Sony Developer site help.
5. You can look for a software called Flashtool and download it. This is going to help you in further things.
6. Now unlock your bootloader.
7. Now Flash a boot image which has a recovery and is for XZR.
8. Download a flashable zip file for installing SuperSU.
9. Flash that file using that recovery.
10. Flash the kernel from the downloaded firmware of Kitkat using flashtool.
11. Start your phone and you may find SuperSU installed in your phone.
12. Now comes the part to keep your Bravia engine alive. As you have taken a backup of your TA, open the Backup TA tool after activating developer mode and USB Debugging.
13. Then connect your phone, restore TA partition to your phone.
14. Now what you have is :- i). Rooted Kitkat on phone. ii). TA partition for future restoring of your TA after unlocking the phone.
All these above steps I have written here have a altogether a complete explanation. Now it's your turn to read them from here XDA. Go ahead and read more before asking anymore. The more you read, the less noob you are. :good:

Thank you for this guide. I really really appreciate it.
1. Wanted to know if it's not a problem to downgrade directly from 4.4.2 to 4.1/4.2?
2. No special things required to do? Just back up user data?
3. Use androxyde flashtool and use any region 4.1/4.2?
Just wanted to really make sure before i try doing this. Since i bought the phone recently and kitkat is just killing me with sdcard restrictions.

What you really need is right ftf file for your phone region isn't the problem and yes there is nothing special required to downgrade from any version to any version as far as ftf file is correct and is for correct device. You are good to go :good::good:
You can try root your zr kit kat use Towelroot. Some of the z and zr owners managed to get root even in lock bootloader. I already tested on my zr JB 4.3. Lockbootloader. Work flawlessly.
I did it!

You did nothing wrong. Link2SD or alike won't work on 4.2 and up . If you need to move apps to the SDCard you'll have to use FolderMount. You can move up to 3 data folders with the free version and it works great especially if you have apps with big data folders (like games). However, if you need to move more than 3 data folders, you'll have to get the Premium version.
Good going.

Our friend here is right. These apps were made for gingerbread mainly, and alas they don't work on JB+. So what you need to do is understand more about folder mount before starting to use it. Learn more about it before making your move.
Silly question perhaps i don't know about. I'm on a stock ROM, rooted, still locked bootloader, and I cannot enter stock recovery. How do i possibly do that? I used the power+volup, power+voldwn, used root power options to boot recovery but I cannot.
Any information should help.
Thanks guys.

There is no recovery in stock.
Install one for XZR. @sijav has nice working dual recovery on the forum here for XZR, I personally use that as it doesn't require us to unlock bootloader. Here you can find it :- Dual Recovery
Press thanks if I helped
