just by making wipes will not solve your lag problems
you have to uninstall unnecessary apps and have to root your phone so that you can change its governing settings with apps like no frills cpu from conservative to performance and to flash scripts like fly on mod which improves speed upto an extent

[Q] Performance Question

Hey
I just updated my Galaxy S to firmware 2.3.3, JVQ through kies
I was just wondering if there would be any dramatic performance advantage if i used a custom ROM or something?
Also another question, when i updated through kies i didnt do a factory reset, Should i do one now? would it make any difference to my phones poerformance?
Thanks for any help
If you are currently experiencing nothing out of the ordinary (errors, lag, etc.) then I don't feel doing a factory reset would help in any way.
Custom ROMs are made for plenty of different things. If you like what Samsung has to offer, keep at it. If you feel you'd enjoy more speed, power, etc., then try a custom one. That's literally why people make one—to improve on an area where they feel could use improving. Personally, I use CM7. If you're after power, that's the ROM for you.
Thanks for your reply, I do sometimes get a little bit of lag, sometimes apps freezing up...
What im really asking is how noticeable would the difference in performance be?

I use CM7 with Glitch's kernel, and I usually have my phone running at 1.2 GHz. I never, ever experience lag in the launcher—opening the app drawer, transitioning between homescreens (filled with widgets); for the most part, my phone doesn't lag when using/multi-tasking between apps (although some apps still take time to load, of course); I virtually never, ever have any lag whatsoever when browsing the web (I use Opera Mobile); and I rarely have any stuttering in games, although I simply bump my CPU up a bit more if I need the extra power (some games are fairly intensive).
For the most part, I don't experience lag. When I do, I feel like I haven't tweaked my phone quite right. I quickly jumped off the Samsung boat once I realized that there were different, more performance-oriented ROMs available—and I must say that I am extremely pleased with both the performance and elaborated settings menu of CM7, which leaves for a truly customizable experience. If you're at all interested in an experience like this, I'd start looking into custom ROMs. It takes a little bit to wrap your head around it all, but once you learn the basics and set your phone up just right, you'll have a much more enjoyable experience. I certainly have.
I found ram tweaks had the most effect, there's a thread in the dev section on optimizing your phone, or you can use the simplicity rom, I think it has those tweaks all pre done.

[Q] Is this a safe setup for my Galaxy S i9000?

Hey everyone
Just a simple question; Is the following setup safe for my galaxy s i9000? What I mean is, will the phone face bootloops and other problems soon?? I am currently using it and the performance is....well lets just say unrealistic. Phone boots up and is ready go in less than 15 seconds. The reason why I am paranoid is because im coming from the stock 2.2 Froyo and the performance gain really is unbelievable.
Setup is:
- Stock XXJVT odex
- Dark Core kernel 4.1 for JVT (It has some lagfix activated or something)
- Adernaline Shot v13
- Current governor (through setCPU): Ondemand -> As recommended by Adernaline Shot thread.
I wouldn't worry to much. The performance gain from Froyo Stock to JVT is really impressive!
I had a pretty similar setup for some time at it was running very well. Some random reboots may occur as with all firmwares (Stock and cutom) I have tried before.
Also, I overclocked it to 1,3Ghz with no loss of stability.
Have fun.
Nice and clean setup. You should not face any problem.
Hello!
Just reporting back on this setup....
The performance really is amazing. Phone runs very fast, apps load and close instantly, no heating issues, browsing is incredible, and not to mention this voodoo sound thing that turned the speakers into boom boxes, and massively improved in-call sound and volume. I haven't had any random bootups yet.
However, the only grudge I have is, and hopefully u guys can help me out, that the GPS signal quality is very lame with Google Maps. Also, Google Maps is VERY laggy, sometimes impossible to use because I can't even scroll around or zoom-in/out because it goes down to like 3 fps. It is just shocking that heavy 3D games can be played for an hour without any stuttering or slowing down, yet Google's own application Google Maps barely runs.
I would really appreciate it if you guys can help me out

Lol ya after doing some searching I found that this is a pretty common problem. However, its not the GPS locking that is bothering me; The Google Maps app itself is VERY laggy, im currently on version 6.0.0 and it is unusable for me. Scrolling around and zooming in/out is like 2 frames per second. Do you know why that would be?

[Q] O2x performance degradation.

Got a sim free o2x and immediately upgraded it to gingerbread using LG's tool.
I have noticed that the performance degrades over time especially noticable with scrolling web pages and youtube.
From a clean boot, i fire up youtube and can watch big bug bunny in 1080p full screen and very smooth. When I come back to it a few days lastr, the same video stutters and the audio also skips. I can create this effect a lot quicker by playing something with the built in video player. After having played a video on SD card, i go back to youtube and its a stutter show again.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this using standard gingerbread on the O2x? I'v tried killing various apps and uninstalling others but nothing very scientific and the only way I can get back to normal performance if with a reboot. Any help gratefully appreciated!
Sounds to me like the ram is busy. Just try an app that cleans up the ram.
Stock kernel has bug in memory management. Solution is to flash for example Spica's kernel, latest r11-c is very very good.
Evidently that supposes to root - instal clockwork mod recovery first.

I have a problem with Spica's kernel , I think that it doesnt support netfilter (iptables) thus I cant use Droidwall, any solution?
Thanks
Instal iptables from market?
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mgranja.iptables
Edit: the app says that iptables is already installed in kernel, not in the latest version but present. That's perhaps the problem. Only thing is to ask Spica to update to last version.
Ohhhh, i will check it later! thanks!!!
Have tried some RAM clean up apps, unfortunately it makes no difference. The amount of RAM free seemed to make no difference, i had it running smoothly with 82mb free and stuttering with over 100mb ram. If something like this was happening on my linux box I would assume something is hogging the cpu but the apps i have tried seem to indicate nothing is consuming a lot of cpu resources.
I don't want to consider reflashing with another ROM if I can avoid it. Is there anything else I could try?
Kernel problem. Read above.

Reboot your dam phone then.... pcs also get laggy when they have been on for a long time, so reboot and or flash a decent kernel.
Use stock kernel\rom from 20o
I have the same problem. After about 36 hours, the phone becomes laggy. It lags when waking up the screen, it lags in menus, etc so i have to reboot it every 36 hours or so.
Speaking of kernels and roms, i've tried them all by now. From CM7 (which i could not get along with, functionality wise) to Topogigi, spica, Thanatos, carburano, gueste and erestor.
I am now on gueste 2.1 stable SR1 and the problem persists.
After about 16 hours wake-up and the lockscreen lags, after about 24 hours scrolling becomes choppy, after 36 hours dialer, contacts and other apps start slowly and lag big time.
This is the same behaviour in all roms and kernels tried (except CM7 which is a no go for me).
L.E.:
Of course, rebooting solves the problem for the next 20 hours or so, but its quite inconvenient.

[Q] Big lags in CM 10.1 + 3.4.37 kernel

Hi !
I have a question. I finally decided to unlock bootloader and install custom ROM to have longer battery life + less lags. I've decided to flash CyanogenMod 10.1 (from 2.06) and kholk's kernel 3.4.37. I did a hard reset before and after flashing ROM and kernel. But I was quite surprised:
-now this phone just feels heavy to use - lags almost everywhere (in launcher, when browsing apps, when choosing apps, everywhere)
- games like GTA became unplayable due to low framerate (very low)
- even simple games (like Hill Climb Racing) became quite laggy (on stock they were running perfectly
I yet to check battery life.
Is it normal for this MOD + kernel to be quite laggy? Or did I do something wrong? Or maybe i should just change to another ROM?
Thanks for advance !

change to another kernel. test out which rom/kernel combinations work best for you.

Change your cpu governor to INTERACTIVE and you will see the difference
Check your kernel setting
Check your kernel setting : min/max freq and governor.

[Q]About governors.

Hello, i recently rooted my phone with the bootloader still locker. The main reason for me to do this was to remove the scrolling lag i noticed.
So after the rooting i installed pimp my z1 and changed the governors of my cpu to performance. After that i started testing again and the lag was gone! No more jitter and stutter anymore. I tried the other governors but they all increased the lag, with powersave being the worst.
The default setting is ondemand, which works quite well, but gives a little lag on apps like phonebook and gmail. Although i guess it's better for the battery etc. But seeing this, i started wondering why the default settings aren't working well, while the hardware really is good! Is that sony failing at improving the performance of the roms or making it work smooth with kitkat? Or what is the cause for this situation? Also because i'm a bit scared that using performance all the time will reduce the battery or even wear the hardware down faster.
Is not Sony fault, you are messing around with Custom settings and Apps. BTW, Pimp my Z1 should be coordinate with Custom Kernel like the Doom one, but you still on Locked Bootloader then you are working on Stock one which do not have the option to be tweeked. In this case half of the Setting in Pimp my Z1 will not work or will not work properly, so do not complain. Try just to find the best settings with what you got.

Yeah, that's why i posted this topic. If i use pimp my z1 (or i guess any other kernel tuner/oc app) and change governor to performance, all lag is gone. While using unrooted stock rom with standard governors gives quite some lag and stutters when scrolling through standard apps like phone and gmail. I'm just trying to find the cause of that. Also because i can't believe that this hardware has problems simple actions like this scrolling.
I also read that on other devices like the xperia z people have problems with lag in the ui like this. So maybe it's also because of android 4.4 or something.

The "performance" governor is the least intelligent governor there is. It has no clocking logic. All it does is "keep CPU at maximum speed at all times". I'm sure you can see why this is a bad idea on a device that can (and does) overheat when the CPU is at high clocks, and where the power consumption should be restricted to make the battery last more. You shouldn't use performance as your day to day governor.
But it is smoother, of course. Since there is no logic, it runs at full speed all the time, while other governors only drive your CPU to 2.3GHz when it's absolutely necessary. 1GHz is more than enough for the UI (and this is in fact how "project butter" is implemented on Snapdragon phones: when there is a finger on the screen, the minimum clock goes up to something around 1GHz). The fact that you can detect lags mean that Sony didn't go nuclear and just make the CPU run too fast.

The best governor for me is SmartassV2 set to 1 core and the rest on either ondemand or interactive. Use Doomlords kernel along with Pimp My Z1 app for per core governors. I'm not sure of you can do that for UB. If you cant, then just change Rom for me ihackers is the smooth on stock governor, which i think is onDemand - im currently using CM11 just moved from iHackers 4.1 2 days ago
yup owns Z1 and stuff. Also if I've helped you don't forget to hit THANKS - actions speak louder that words.

So getting the minimum clock to about 1ghz using interactive governor should be enough?

Wow, if you use performance all the time then your CPU is at max all the time. No matter what you are doing, no matter if your screen is off or if you have just put to one side...
It will kill your battery and burn out hardware very quick.

I got that, that's why i'm looking for better ways to do that. It just doesn't feel right that i have to do stuff like that to get a smooth working ui. Maybe i'm a perfectionist, but this s800 hardware should be able to do the call log/phonebook and gmail without stuttering right?
I'm using interactive governor atm with minimum clock 600. I notice that helps a bit already.
