I have not seen a unified discussion on this issue yet, only fragments in other forums. I know it is a known issue but it is hardly discussed. I've noticed that the cell signal on stock LG roms are MUCH better than on AOSP/CM11. This is causing issues with my phone constantly refreshing. I dont get very good signal in my office already, but I can make calls and text still. When im on an AOSP or CM11 based rom, it all fails. Also when im on AOSP or CM11 it will connect to the network then instantly disconnect and go into roaming mode then repeat this over and over again. I just want to know if this is a known issue or if there is some kind of fix.

It's related to multisim merges from cyanogenmod. Seems to affect Verizon mostly and 3g. As of right now no fix that I'm aware of. LS doesn't have this bug. It helps to allow roaming. As far as signal bars alone don't tell the whole story. The phone usually gets the same signal check it out with an app called advanced signal status. But aosp has always been slower with data handoffs from 3g to 4g or from WiFi to mobile. But not to say you aren't seeing these issues where aosp can't make calls where stock can but for me I can make calls and use data in all the same places. And I live in a low signal area.

Very helpful info. Nice to finally have solid evidence to my issue. I don't mind the roaming bit. Its the constant switching from low signal to no service that I get that bothers me. It refreshes every app I'm in every time it does it. Its bearable but annoying as hell.

Are you basing this off of bars or db? Aosp Roms typically show less bars for me then stock but the db only varies about -5
The 3g roaming issue is because of cm screwing some files for the vs. It also caused no apn found issue too. Until cm fixes the issue it shall remain.
Turn on allow data while roaming (because the roaming is only cosmetic) and data should work as it normally would.

I'm basing it off the bars. Either way it is constantly switching and refreshing my apps. On my stock ROM I get signal with no switching in my office.

Try turning on data while roaming, and see if that stops it from refreshing.

Seeing how its CM source related and almost all the current AOSP kitkat roms are based on that source, I went back to stock for now. Much more stability with no cell signal issue. Seems like ill have to be patient before we get any kind of stability improvements.

Recently I've notice my mobile data will disconnect sporadically. I'm not sure if it related to the phone or service. Is there a way to tell?
BTW, I'm in the Los Angeles area.
I've been having this problem too. I haven't been able to find a fix yet.
Have you tried updating PRL and Profile?

I had the same problem when sprint was doing NV deployment in my area!
My problem went away after sprint was done in my area!

Do you have sleep mode on or data connection checked in your power saver menu?

I've noticed the same here in VA. It'll drop for a few seconds then come back.
I still have a connection, but I am noticing 3G/4G flickers in northern Virginia. Hopefully our markets go live soon (officially, anywhoo).
I've updated the prl and profile and have had sprint reprovision data twice. I'm not using battery saver or anything either. The only thing that seems to keep data stable is if I set mobile data to 'CDMA only'.
LTE phone in a non LTE area has caused me grief. Could this be the problem for you also?
I've been having the same issue. However it didn't start till after I unlocked my bootloader and flashed a new ROM. I think it may just be bad timing but I've called Sprint to see if they are doing any work and I've been told no. (For what that's worth)
I also have a GS 3 & 4 and neither of them are having the issue.

I'm thinking that is the cause of this issue. About 60% of San Francisco has LTE now and I'm thinking the phone just has trouble staying to one tower or another. Still it's a frustrating issue.I didn't have any of these problems on my iphone 5 before or after switching back and forth.

This is an ongoing gripe of mine. I'm wondering if it's just me or if other people have this problem. When I'm on 4g it intermittently turns off data for a few seconds. The 4g icon goes away and comes back a few seconds later interrupting my connection. Only happens on 4g. If I set the mobile network to just 2g or 3g I don't have this problem. I've tried lots of different modems. So I'm wondering if it's an Optus thing or an issue with my phone? ?

probably poor coverage of 4G network
Why 4G when 3G is enough for watching video etc etc?
And it drain more battery also

I'm literally right next to a big city. Its not a coverage thing. If I have a 4g phone why not use it. I get about 24 hours of battery life from it so that's not an issue

I updated to 4.3 just now and my lte signal dropped to 1 to 2 bars, from a constant full bars. I noticed the performance is equal, meaning it may be just a difference in the sensitivity of the antenna's display of good signal however, it drops from lte a lot and stays in 3g. Has anyone verified the changes in the new modem? Any other bugs I should be aware on the 4.3 update? Also, Dashclock widget doesn't work on htc's widget lock screen.
Looks like before the bars were for voice and now they represent data. That's the way it is in AOSP.

I imagined since there were no changes in performance per se. I just wish I could restrict my one to lte only. Either 4g or no data.

I work relatively close to a 4G LTE tower before updated it showed full 4G with fast speeds, now it shows little to no 4G and would switch to 3G. I tried to Factory Data Reset with PRL and Profile Update and still shows the same, and I'm running all stock no root, and I'm pretty sure it's not the tower.

This is correct. You can verify this by connecting to wifi and then disabling mobile data. Your bars will instantly change.
I like this change. Now I can see that it is not possible to have more than 1 bar of 4G pretty much anywhere in my area. No wonder the speeds are so average and I almost never get 4G, the Sprint towers are all so far off the main roads that by the time the signal gets there it's weak. You can get full bars... if you drive up to the Sprint call center in Bristol, TN.
Before this change it was a lot harder to tell whether you were getting good 4G or 3G reception.
Edit: I just want to say that the reception itself is largely unchanged. When the phone goes from 4G to 3G, nothing will make it go back to 4G except toggling the data off and on.
Just to throw this in the mix. I live in an area that never had 4g but after this update I have it now. My signal strength also shows the one bar but coming from 3g only my connection now is 4g and has increased significantly. Maybe this new radio has a factor that extends the overall 4g coverage? I guess it could be just timing and 4g was opened up in my area but like I said I now have it after this update.
It seems that every so often, maybe once a minute sometimes, my phone will briefly drop 1X and 3G and then pick it back up. It's fairly quick but it's maddeningly annoying when I'm browsing. My phone has been doing this for a while I think, but it seems to occur more often after the 4.3 update and new radio. I have no idea if it's rom related, my phone, or sprints network. I'm using bad boyz. Anyone else experience this?

I had the same experiences when i was running BadBoyz. Thought it was just me, but after flashing Elegancia and now InsertCoin...my connection have been steady at eHRPD with some flashes of 4gLTE here and there depending on my location. But yeah, my connection has never dropped since switching rom.

Anyone having this issue? I'm getting unbelievable drain both on stock 4.2.2 and leaked OTA 4.4.2. I have all location services off so not sure why I have this issue? Any ideas or recommendations greatly appreciated.

That's your phone buddy. Making lots of calls or on hold?
No I hardly ever use the phone ..would changing kernels fix it? I have noticed it is much worse when in bad signal area.
Sent from my VS980 4G using xda app-developers app
Of course it would be, it's the phone looking for signal or GPS location. It's the area you are in. A fringe area causes much more drain like you are seeing being that the radio is constantly searching for a signal. A kernel, not much, modem possibly. I have the RILJ wakelock when my area surrounded by water goes in a low state. Nothing to really be done... I've even tried to have Verizon upgrade tower here as it affects everyone in my location, pretty much service ticketed, loled at, and told about femtocell that I would need to pay for running off my internet..... LOL

this app and maybe others may help, I have not tried it :.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2698432 and http://lifehacker.com/auto-pilot-mode-puts-your-phone-in-airplane-mode-when-y-1556047508 by putting phone in airport mode in low signal areas and only searching at intervals you want.
