HTC One dots instead of name - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Maybe one week before I found that I have dots instead of name of the menu.
Sometimes I can see the name sometime I can see only 3 dots.
The issue is observerd on camera and mail HTC sense 5.5 applications.
HTC One M7 4.4.2 stock, latest updates
Can you help me how to solve the problem?
Please find attached two screenshots - one with the issue seen and one when everything is ok.

Try to reboot the device and see if that persists

I already tried that, it's ok for a while but then again the same issue. I found one strange relation (maybe) when my mail accounts start to sync the new messages and the issue happens immediately. I'm not sure if there is connection.

I have the same issue also. Only just got the One yesterday, and updated straight to 4.4.2 OTA and have noticed this. It seems to do it on random apps. Sometimes in Messages, sometimes not.
Also in Messages if the name is long, it doesn't sometimes stretch the little dropdown arrow for the entire name.
Looks like there are a few niggles in the latest update.

Wow sometimes Android shows with the strangest problems. See if clearing cache and dalvik cache will clear it up.

Can I do it without root and customer recovery. I'm running full stock 4.4.2 without root. I want to avoid reset to factory settings.

Oh I thought you were rooted. But wiping cache and dalvik cache needs a custom recovery. It's even more surprising to see this happening on a stock device.

Experiencing the same
Hi all,
I am experiencing the same issue.
Non-rooted, stock 4.4.2 running sense 5.5, Verizon
I've tried changing my system font size & the text sizes, anywhere from Small to huge, I've rebooted multiple times. I am still experiencing this issue.
Ive attached four images to this showing what I'm experiencing, the gray boxes are information I've edited out, but the dots are still there.
It's happening in most system apps, Messaging, Mail, Gallery.

FYI this is the official answer from HTC support regarding the issue:
=================================================
In regards to your enquiry, please try the following steps:
- Please try to Soft Reset the phone (restart your device)
If this doesn't resolve your issue then unfortunately you need to perform Factory Data Reset of your phone. You can do that by:
Please press MENU on the Home screen, then tap Settings> back up and reset > Reset phone.
NOTE: Resetting your handset to factory or manufacturer's default setting will delete all the data stored on your phone memory, please back up your files first.
We hope that this has helped you with your issue.
if it will not help you , you might have hardware issue , so we recommend to you to contact our repair center through our point of collection
==================================================
If I make factory reset who will install/configure all my applications/news/mail accounts.
Android should have much better system for deleting cache and dalvik cache other than root.

I spoke with HTC Support, they told me to run through a few steps, started with a reboot to safe mode, clearing the sense cache, and a factory restore.
The factory restore resolved it for a few minutes, but the issue reappeared.
It seems to be related to the pinch-to-change text size in the messaging application.
EDIT: I'm reaching out to HTC Support again-

LastPass is the culprit
I've been through multiple factory resets and adding applications one by one.
The problem is caused by LastPass. The auto-fill into apps feature.
I've sent a support ticket into LP, I suggest you all do the same, but it does not appear when that is disabled. Appears when it is enabled, and goes away once I disable it.
Seems like it doesn't play well with Sense :/

You are the saver !!!! Thanks a lot for this valuable information.
As soon as I disabled Last Pass autofill options in "Accessibility" screen everything went back to normal.
Thank you once again and have a nice day!

One ticket with the issue opened in Last Pass support system from my side also!
Let's see what will happen

It's funny. I'd kind of had a hunch it was that. I turned it off on my phone as all apps had been installed, and hadn't seen it since. It must be something to do with the new overlay feature they have, which is really useful! Good spot though

Caller ID Not Working Correctly (Help plz)

I am not sure what I have changed (if anything) to cause this, but my Caller ID has been rendered almost useless lately. For some reason, caller ID neglects to show up until I hit Menu, and enter my unlock pattern. The phone will vibrate and ring, but nothing is shown on the screen until I do this.
The two applications that I thought might have been causing this were Autolock (used to set a custom timer to invoke the lock screen) and Handcent SMS, due to its msg preview function that displays an incoming text as an immediate pop-up.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any suggestions?
Thanks.
What rom do you have, that is a rom specific question and fixed in some of the newer cyanogen builds.
My phone started slowing down and eventually started doing the same thing. Clear out your data and cache from apps like browser, google maps, and street view. Then go to terminal and clear out dalvik-cache.
Code:
$su
#cd /system/sd/dalvik-cache
#rm *
#exit
$exit
Then reboot your phone. It will take awhile for it to boot back up like if it was a fresh install. This worked for me.
Sorry I should have mentioned the ROM I'm using - made that first post in a hurry.
I am using Cyanogen's latest stable build (4.0.4). I will try clearing the cache and see if that helps, though that seems somewhat annoying if that is the only fix and will need to be done routinely.

It won't need to be done routinely just whenever the cache starts filling up. Its just like a pc, after awhile you have to clear it out.

[Q] Droid 3 front facing camera problem

Everytime I try to use the front facing camera on my Droid 3 it says "unable to intialize" and I have to power off the phone to reset the camera. I've found lots of people that have had the same problem (why didn't I find these posts BEFORE I bought the phone??) but I've not found any solutions.
I have not made any modifications to the phone. It is not rooted. It says my system is up to date.
Is there anyway to fix this?
Thank you for any help I can get. I am beyond frustrated
Factory reset? Probably a software problem.

Tried that (more than once, just to be sure). No luck.
Any other suggestions?
Which version of software do you have? Go to Settings, and go to the bottom and tap that and look at the version (post a screenshot or picture so we can tell).

It is System Version 5.7.906.XT862, Android Version 2.3.4
(Sorry for no screenshot,I tried a handful of screenshot apps and didn't have any luck with any of them working right.)
I have the same problem with minomoto
Do you have any third-party apps that use the ff camera? For example, have you installed any anti-theft security apps installed that may be set to use the camera if somebody has stolen the phone? Is it possible that one of those running in the background is not releasing the camera for other apps?

I didn't install anything like that and I don't think any of the bloatware has anything like.
This same issue suddenly struck my Droid 3 a week ago. I'm running stock .906, rooted, most Verizon bloat removed. Never had an issue with any camera apps accessing front or back cameras, then suddenly my front camera either shows black or won't initialize. I searched the web pretty extensively, but haven't found any definite fix. I've tried clearing the system cache and deleting the camera app's data with no result. I'm hoping to avoid a hard reset if possible, as I hate having to set everything up again, and by the reports I've seen it's only helped a few people.
You could create another ROM slot and try that from Safestrap. But it might be the hardware going pfffftt.
I know some others have had the same issue I believe they had to sbf. If nothing else if the issue survives an sbf you will know it's hardware

Problem seems to have shown up after Google+ apps started to populate phone.

[Q] No "stickers"

This is a minor problem, yet a problem nonetheless. Stock rooted, under the effects in gallery, there's a "stickers" option. When I tap it, it brings up a screen that has multiple blank spots that I would assume have fun little effects to add on. When I click any blank square, it gives me a gallery has stopped error and just goes back to the picture I was trying to play with. I'm wondering, when I unlocked the phone and /data was wiped, did I lose the stickers, kind of like unlocking wipes the HTC calculator?
Like I said, minor issue, but I'd like to have all of the features I'm supposed to have. Any help would be appreciated.

That happened to me after rooting. Apparently the stickers are in the folder "data" which gets wiped when rooting. You need to pull the "data" folder from the stock ROM or OTA zip and push it over.

Got it. Preload push did the trick. I figured it was something like that. Thanks.

Got Annoying Lag on Lollipop? Here's a tip that can save your Nexus 7!

If you go to Settings>Developer Options, tap "Enable View Attribute Inspection", then boot into recovery and clear cache, your Nexus 7 will run like new, no lag, no freezing.
If you need help doing this, there are steps below for you to look at.
*HOW TO GET DEV OPTIONS IF YOU DON'T SEE IT*
-Go to Settings>About tablet.
-Find the build number.
-Mash it until a message telling you that you are a developer appears.
-You're done!
*HOW TO GET INTO RECOVERY AND CLEAR CACHE*
Do this after you enable "View Attribute Inspection".
-Power off your Nexus
-Press the power and volume down buttons until you see a screen with an Android guy with an open chest and some device info and options.
-To scroll through the options, use the volume up or down buttons to show an option, and use the power button to select it. The option we are looking for is "Recovery".
-Once you select it, the Google screen will appear and after a couple seconds, an Android guy with his chest open and the words "No command" appear.
-Don't freak out now! Now press the power and the volume up buttons and count to 3. After you count to 3, let go of the buttons, and a menu will appear. And again, to scroll through the options, use the volume up or down buttons to show an option, and use the power button to select it. Now highlight "Clear cache", and select it. The Nexus will do its magic, and when it's done, highlight "Reboot to system" and you will reboot to Lollipop.
Hope I helped!
I'm guessing that wiping the cache does more than anything else. Otherwise, its a harmless enough tweak to try. Like most of these things, for some it'll work, for others it wont.
May I ask what that View Attribute Inspection option does exactly? I know that clearing cache helps but its only a temporary solution and needs to be done regularly, but I have not heard of that option before so, what does it do?
Tried this on both my N5 and N7, with some strange (to me) results.
When I did it the first time on my N7 (maybe about 3 weeks ago) the wiping was pretty much instantaneous, whereas on the N5 it took close to ten minutes (!).
Did it again today on both devices, with the wiping being complete instantaneously on the N7, while on the N5 it took maybe about 3 minutes this time.
Any particular reason why that would happen?
I own the same devices, and I can confirm this weird behavior is, I think, normal. Wiping cache takes a second on the N7, and several minutes on the N5.

I tried this, and it worked like a charm. Thanks for the great tip!
And as for the business of wiping the cache without following Wish39's Developers Options change: Nope. I've been wiping the cache on my N7 since the update, and things are noticeably faster now.
Do it; it'll make you happy.
cheers,
john
The reason why I recommend wiping cache is this: Your Nexus 7 may still lag or stutter after enabling the view attribute inspection (happened to my Nexus 7 after discovering and enabling the option).
So to summarize:
If your Nexus 7 is fast enough for you after doing the tweak, don't wipe the cache unless you really want to.
If your Nexus 7 still lags like hell, do wipe the cache to speed it up.

Thank you man, I did the tweak but few minutes ago but the tablet seems smoother and snappier indeed. I didn't even clear the cache (which I already did a couple of weeks ago).
My only concern is about what this option does, can you tell me more about the actual meaning of this checkbox?

I've actually done research on that. What it does is it opens some sort of new view into Android System Manager. But even I can't understand why it speeds up your device.

Nothing to understand; it doesn't.
Whoops. Guess my memory is a bit fuzzy. I looked it up again and this is what I found.
"Enable view attribute inspection: Inspect views’ attributes in Android System Manager." -http://www.droidviews.com/guide-android-developer-options/
So far so good. This has made a significant difference for me. Many thanks to Wish39

Does that mean that this option has no effect on the performance? Because I did enable it and saw no actual improvement in performance, though there might have been something very small, but not sure if it was due to the option.
I didn't see a noticeable change in performance. Chrome still brings the Nexus 7 to its knees when it comes to performance.
i'm doing this procedure but in the recovey menu I don't see the option clear cache
I see
1. Wipe cache/factory reset
2. Wipe cache patrition data.

FWIW, I went through both releases from Goog of L on my N7/2012/WiFi and in the end found it just "that much" too irritating.
Last couple weeks (3?) I've been running the nightly CyanogenMod 12 release and I haven't had a real reason to *****. I update my CM12 edition weekly, not nightly, and the last two weeks it's been pretty solidly non-irritating. Kindle App, Zinio, Firefox, Chrome, Facebook Lite, some others.
The only app which seems performance constrained so far is Rocket Player. Sometimes it hiccups. Haven't played with any tweaking though to get resolve it.
If you're interested in playing with CM12 nightly => https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=grouper&type=nightly
Cheers.
well this method works temporarily 2-3days it will soon starts to lag... so i'd be 50-50 neutral here. does speed up a lil but will lag few days later on.

Agreed. My n7 is lagging again... I think I'll opt for a faster custom ROM based on Lollipop.

swype for huawei problem

I am having a problem with swype keybord for huawei. I did no happen on emui 2.3 i started on emui 3.0 around March but I have emui 3.0 since January. When I change the position of the cursor to edit some previous word - dictionart switched off- and i go back to te end of the text to proceed texting, the cursor goes back to the place where it has previously been - in the place where I edited something- and pastes the same text again -the same that i wrote at the end of the line. It often even delites the previous edition. I have tried to remove cache. Helped for a while but yhe problem has returned. I want to avoid factory reset for there is to much to set up again. Obviously I am using android keybord now. Do you experience similar problem on this phone with this app? Checked the internet people have it on other devices - advice cache wipe, factory reset, other keybord. I wonder what xda developers can advise on that matter.
