Holding power + home doesn't bring up recovery either?
You'd then need to adb flash the recovery or make an sdcard bootable and put the sdcard recovery on there which would then be started by the device and then you can fix from there. Go with the one you have already available first.

no ive tried holding power + home but all it does is turn off the nook and i have tried using a bootable sd card but the nook doesnt seem to want to boot up on that either. As of using adb i have tried to use it but it will not connect to the device for me to flash anything to it. It may be to my lack of experience using adb or fastboot.

You are holding power too long. Hold power and n together for a few seconds releasing power first followed by releasing n. It should boot to recovery (either stock or CWM).

i have tried all sorts of button combinations including like you just said. the nook powers on for maybe 3 secs shows the word "nook" and cuts back off not enough time to do anything with

Your emmc is messed up. I suggest you go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread and make a new bootable CWM SD per item 1a and then use that to install a plain stock zip from item 6. That should repair the files on emmc and you can start over with CM11.

If you mess up the internal emmc recovery, your nook will behave exactly as described.
(trust me, I've been there).
The cure is to (re)flash a working recovery from a sdcard recovery.
Some people complain that it's hard to get their device to boot from sdcard.
Sometimes it helps to plug in your nook to entice it to boot from sd.

[Q] NooB questions (1 of 4): Boot into recovery

Absolute NooB to the NC here, so please be gentle!
I've got four issues that should be no-brainers but they are beating me up. I've split them into four separate posts to keep things clean.
1. Booting to recovery
What I've read is to power the NC off, power on, hold down power & N key until boot screen (which I assume is the "Touch the future of reading" screen), then release both to boot into recovery mode.
Certainly sounds simple.
I can't make it work. Been trying for days.
So, does this actually work? What is the trick?
Timing on that can be tricky, so don't get frustrated. When the 'touch the future' logo comes up, continue holding N and power and count to about 4. Hopefully that gets you, but if not, try 3 and 5 counts. If it powers back off, you held too long, but it won't hurt anything!
I have the same darn problem with mine---but I never see "touch of the future" script, I see " loading". I always see "loading".
CM7 on the sd card.
I have never booted into recovery.
?
I usually reboot to recovery from rom manager.
Thanks! Got it down now. Once I got the timing down, tis as easy as on my original Droid.

That's my preferred method (on my original Droid) but it doesn't work for me on the Nook.
Maybe because I am still booting CM7 from the sdcard?
I'm on the same boat here cant figure out how to get into recovery mode.
I tried the power/N button combinations, reboot into recovery from CM7 desktop, and ROM manager still doesn't get me into recovery mode.

Problem fixed, stopped using stable build 7.03 and used nightly build 102 and now I could get in and out of recovery mode with no issues.

[Q] Can't get nook to boot in recovery mode???

Ok, so I just got a nook and went through the steps of rooting it by following this tutorial here: http://www.the-ebook-reader.com/nook-color-cm7.html which eventually led me to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957. I then tried to put gapps on my nook so I could get android market but I can't get the nook to boot into recovery mode! I started searching through alot of forums and noticed many people saying you need to have ClockworkMod Recovery which I thought I already had. But in my rom manager it says "You mush have the CLockworkMod Recovery installed to flash and restore ROMs!" So apparently I can't go into recovery mode because I don't have it?? I don't know how to install it either because all the tutorials start out with a stock nook and my nook already has gingerbread on it. I'm extremely cautious to try anything because this is my first time rooting. What do I do????
Well, I figured out how to install Clockwork through the rom manager and I just noticed an update in the bottom bar. It just gave me the option to add google apps and it's downloading as I type this. Confused about recovery mode and the little penguin now.

Idk if you figured this out yet but in case you didn't, what you were supposed to do is download the latest gapps which is 200110613 if your using latest cm7. Then put that zip in the boot partition of your sd card. Put the sd card back into your nook and boot into recovery by holding down the N and power buttons. When the loading screen appears you release the buttons. It then will install gapps to the sd card and power down when its done.
Tip: If you cant time the release of N and power to get gapps installed. Just let cm7 load up then hold power select reboot then select recovery.

What I ended up doing actually is rerooting it to run nightlies instead of the stable version 7.0.3. It rebooted into recovery mode and worked like a charm.
When am I supposed to see the option to Boot to Recovery? I have tried timing holding N and power and that didn't work. I tried holding the N till script appeared but only option ended up booting to B&N Nook Color.
How do I forec a Recovery boot?

[Q] I think I killed my phone :s

Hi um I'm pretty new to Android phones, and my Captivate's stuck in a bootloop...
I had CyanogenMod 9 on it, based on ICS 4.0.4, which i still have the .zip for if necessary. But I think I did something stupid... in the recovery (which said something about CWMrecovery) mode, I absent-mindedly formatted the /system directory... derp....
Now basically the phone shows the AT&T logo, then shows some kind of recovery screen, it only flashes up for a short time but I can see in the background both an android, like stock recovery mode, and the logo from ROM manager (or something very similar). There is some text at the bottom but it's very small and only flashes up for a split second so I can't read it... and what's worse, it won't boot into recovery...
I'm not exactly sure how to even do it, but random combinations of the volume & power buttons and home.. screen-area-thing work eventually.. but it's just not working now, as i hold the buttons it either just keeps rebooting before it gets past the AT&T logo or ignoring it completely, showing the recovery screen then rebooting again anyway
Sorry it's kinda long.. I tried to be detailed XD
tl;dr CM9 rom Captivate, formatted /system, stuck in bootloop, recovery mode won't work
Any help would be much appreciated
Edit: Forgot to say, I've searched around already but I haven't found anyone else who's bootloop is caused by formatting /system -.-
re flash the rom. you erased the rom.
dont wipe dont format just flash the rom again. you should be back as if it never happened.
If your in a boot loop you might want to invest in a jig, only $6 on eBay
You also said recovery doesn't work? Have you tried putting it into download mode?

If not google Samsung captivate boot loop. Lots of info on how to fix out there. Sorry I don't work on many Samsung phones. Primarily HTC.

jig will not help bootloop.
you are freaking out because of the bootloop and not holding the button combo for recovery long enough.
take out the battery. and replace
hold both volume buttons
then hold power
keep buttons held for 5 seconds AFTER screen comes on.
if your phone turns on and starts to boot, you have recovery and download.

Tried that, isn't working :\ it just ignores it, shows the recovery screen realy quick then reboots again...
I've had this happen on my captivate...only option is to flash back to a stock ROM and work your way back up to CM9 or whatever you were trying to flash originally. To do this your gonna have to get into download mode. A jiff is your best friend in this situation as suggested by several others. however if the button combo for download mode works for you, that is best. Try unplugging the battery, wait for like 10 seconds and plug back in. Have a PC running, and make sure you have the drivers installed. have the USB cable plugged into your computer, and while holding both the volume buttons down, plug the cable into your phone as well. This should put you into download mode and your good to go.

thanks cmilldrummin (and everyone else)
I got my phone into download mode fine... but i don't think I have the drivers :s (googling still, but can't find them so far)
Also I got it into recovery mode earlier, re-flashed the same custom ROM but when I tried to load it it just kept loading with the blue android on a skateboard until the battery ran out (It was the same one, CM9)
Is the like actual android system openable in download mode? so I could re-write the /system folder? if not I guess I'll just try to re-flash a stock rom then upgrade.. *crosses fingers*
Best way is to flash back to stock and start fresh.

Np Dolei, but yea back to stock is best, gives you a nice clean slate, with no glitches or errors

TRusselo is right. The other posts here are taking the sledgehammer approach for a simple fix. If you cannot get into recovery mode - you're doing it wrong, try again. reflash your rom from recovery and all done.

Try doing this, this has worked for me since I can't get into recovery with the traditional button combo method of holding all three buttons at the same time.
Turn the phone off. Hold the power button, vol up, vol down. Once the ATT boot screen comes on, let go of the power button. Keep holding the volume buttons and voila, you're in recovery.
Agree. Definitely go back to stock if possible first.

CM10.1, can't get to recovery to install gapps

I installed CM10.1 from this thread and everything went smooth and works great. However, no matter what I do I can't boot into recovery mode. I've tried the hardware key combinations, the power menu in 10.1/4.2.2 and I've also tried ROM Manager from CWM (to install the latest CWM and boot to it). Everything just boots like normal.
From what I've read I'm guessing I have a recovery that isn't compatible with my ROM? If that's the case, what recovery should I use and how can I install it using nvflash???
Finally got ADB working and was able to install gapps using the method found here (with minor adjustments): http://www.keyables.com/2012/05/use-adb-to-install-google-apps-includes.html
Very cool.
It would probably still be nice to be able to get into recovery if I ever need to... oh well.
Power Off
Press Volume+ and Power and HOLD THEM
Select option 2.
Please put questions in the General section as this is for development only.
I am havIng the same issue with recovery but when I press and hold volume+ and power I get the samsung custom screen and I see recovery in very small blue font in the upper left, I am still holding both keys and then the phone just boots up normal. Any ideas?

[Q] CM11 - never boots?

I've been using CM11 for quite some time now on my 16gb HD+. I've updated the nightly several times before. The other night I downloaded & installed the latest nightly. ( I think it was cm-11-20140512 from cyanogenmod )
Now I can't get past the loading. When I put in the SD card with the recovery on it, it sits there and hangs on "Cyanoboot universal bootloader". When I don't have the SD card in, it sits there and hangs saying "Nook".
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Is there a way to completely reset it or something?

I had trouble getting a couple of the recent nightly updates to boot, but the most recent nightly update works okay. I had to reinstall a good build from recovery mode, but I have recovery installed on my Nook instead of on the SD card.
Erm... that doesn't really help me since I can't get it to boot into recovery.

Yes, I have. It hangs at the screen that I mentioned before.
When I hold the power button down on the hang it turns the nook off, so I can't "hold the power button down + n, see the CM logo, release power, and hold it again" like it says on how-to guide.

It is sounding like you have a bricked emmc. A bricked emmc will boot neither emmc or an ordinary bootable SD since even that needs some of emmc working. Search for verygreen's noemmc posts and see if you can get it working with his modified files.
