[Q] Phone will not connect to LTE until rebooted. - Sprint HTC One (M8)

Anyone notice that the M8 often does not connect to LTE even though there is a strong signal? I am currently carrying around both an M7 and an M8 and, usually after driving to or from work, the M8 will refuse to connect to LTE until I reboot it,or toggle airplane mode on and then off. (Just disabling mobile data and re-enabling doesn't fix it, but rebooting does.)

Probably have a tower that direct have csfb enabled yet

[Q] HTC One signal drops

Hi all,
I have bought a Htc One M7 handset recently and I have noticed time to time there are No Signals (Limited Service) on it. When I switch off/ switch on or if I turn on the Airplane mode and turn off again, the signals will restore. This is happening around 2 times per day and really annoying. Need to know whether this is a known issue for the model.. I still didn't change the SIM and check. Please help!!!!!
Thanks alot!

I have the same thing
To add some detail for diagnostics see below:
- I travel into London every day and sometimes when signal drops in the tunnels it will never pick back up again after leaving them whereas my old One X did not have this on the same journeys.
- It even dropped out mid call and came up with the sim card icon at the notification bar as if no card inserted (but no selectable notification) first time its happened to this extent.
- Do you have a 4G SIM/connection or are you on 3G like myself? I'm thinking perhaps its something to do with trying to pick up 4G instead and completely disregarding the 3G connection that is available.
- I have also noticed that ever since getting the handset its never had as good signal as my One X which was pretty much always full signal in my normal areas (home, work etc) This may just be the way the handset gauges the signal not the signal itself but something to note anyway.
I'm having the same issue here in the US. It's prolly my only complaint with my phone.

I'm also having this issue but more sever with an all-day no signal. After reboot, I gain signal and I can't make and receive calls.
Try to turn 4G off.

How does one do that? Having the same problem, both wifi AND mobile network drop off. Wifi comes back on its own after a few seconds, the mobile data connection often comes back (obviously if not on wifi away from home), but the mobile network stays as no signal and doesn't come back, unless I reboot or cycle aeroplane mode. I know there's some problems with touching antenna, but this is happening a lot in the car, when the phone is powered and sitting in a cradle.

To turn off 4G you go to Settings -> Mobile data -> Network mode and then select "3G / 2G"
don't know if it'll help though, but trying is worthwhile

Thanks. The problems seems to have gone with that change. Perhaps it is some system thing kicking me off the network because I don't have 4G on my contract and my phone was trying to get it.
Now, if you can just tell me why my lovely 3-4 bar indoors signal on EE has dropped to 0-1 outdoors (as they deny there is a problem)

Are you sure it's not just cosmetic? Try going into Settings->About->Network and see if the signal (dBm) is dropping.

I have it constantly on att - I have to turn on airplane mode and turn it back off to get my network back, I have tried different roms and updates and still the issue is across all roms.
Maybe try this: in your dialer type *#*#4636#*#*. Once the menu is opened, select Phone information, then scroll down to Set preffered network type and choose one of the options (im from Serbia, europe, and I usualy go with GSM auto (PRL)).
Issue with 3g only
Whenever I keep it on 3G, it drops signals for 2 to 7 seconds at random intervals. People often complain that when they call, they get a message that my phone is switched off.. I am probably gonna try another ROM and SIM to see if that helps before dumping this phone forever.
how to solve limited service or loosing service on htc one m7
Hello
it seems to be a hardware fault where the radio is not staying on higher band
it seems to be having issues on 2100 and all umts and hspda or lte networks
however switching back to 2 g can resolve this issue and phone ( hope so) will never lose signals or drop then again
i tried this and for me this works fine so far over 12 hours now no issue
give it a try and see this should work
setting>data>network>2g only
by this you wont have option to use fast internet though but at least you can phone can be used for voice calls messaging etc and also wifi too
I was on stock lolli pop and tried to flash cm12.1 but does not help sort the limited service issue
enjoy and leave your feedback
Edit:
some people cant find 2g in settins>mobile network>preferred network type> lte or 3g only, the solution is go to *#*#4636#*#* phone info>set preferred network type>gsm only( this will put your device into 2g mode)
hope this work

Have the same issue when I'm on cdma/lte mode, then I switch to cdma auto, the signal becomes fine.
I don't have the lte coverage in my area.

I have lte in most areas but where I'm at for this week there is no lte. Though as I'm sitting here it will lose all signal randomly for just a few seconds then come back. Happens at least once every few minutes

Happens to me too, we just got lte where I work, same thing still happens :/
happends to me also
Glad that I am not alone. Use to listen to Tune-In while on the road and now it cuts out for a few seconds every other minute or so. Sometimes I reach a stretch of road that I have no data. Also turn on Scout and it constantly says network connection has been lost, and network connection has been restored.
All the time the signal bars show that I have service.
Took my phone to the Sprint store today and all they did was a data reset, 786 I believe. This is the second one that I have had data signal issues with, the first one they said that it failed a radio test one and they replaced it. Also my girlfriend's phone seems to do the same thing. Never had issues like this with my HTC EVO LTE. Might actually reactivate and see if I can isolate to the phone verse the network.
Now the question is phone (which I would tend to be the case), or the network. If it is the phone, is it every phone issue or a bad batch?

How is LTE signal strength?

Just curious, coming from EVO 4g LTE I am really hoping for an improvement in LTE antenna with the m8.
The antenna is better - but not quite as Strong as the G2, N5, or S4. It's about on avg 2-3dBm weaker than the G2, depending on location...on Band 25 LTE. It is however about 8-10dBm better than the M7, according to numerous reports.
The Nexus 5 has by far the best radio on Band 25.
bad signal strength
I don't have numbers to back it up, but what I can tell you is that I have worse signal strength when compared to the M7. I used to toggle back and forth at work between 3g and LTE on the M7, but I never even see an LTE connection at work on the M8. I would also play poker on my break and never have any disconnects on 3g with the M7, but the M8 can't seem to say connected long enough to play 3 hands in a row! I also noticed when I put the M7 and M8 side by side (M7 is connected to another line on my plan now) that I show 5 bars on the M7 and 0-1 bars on the M8! Did I just get a bad phone???

I also have an M7 and an M8. The M8 has a 2-3 dB better signal, but on LTE the number of bars displayed is not accurate. The M7 was like that for a while too until Sprint fixed it with an update. Even with a very strong LTE signal the M8 will show 1-2 bars. That is nothing to worry about.
As for the eCSFB, allegedly only like < 1% of sprint towers still have this problem. Basically if there is a tower with LTE but does not have eCSFB, the phone will deliberately NOT connect to the LTE because doing so would mean that it would not receive incoming phone calls (due to lack of eCSFB).
However, what I've noticed with my M8, is that often, after I drive for a while, the phone will just NOT connect to LTE no matter what. Even in an area with a STRING LTE signal, and working eCSFB, the thing will just not connect to LTE. When it happens it will stay that way forever, until I either reboot it, or toggle airplane mode on and off.
Very annoying. I miss the 2nd radio and SVLTE.

I didn't mention this because it did it on both the M7 and M7, but I constantly miss calls (phone never even rings) when I am at work. I hate that my 3g is so bad that I can't even use my phone at work anymore!
i should edit my post to ask users in spark areas if they have been able to connect to spark? on other forums i found some complaining sprint spark was not working well

I don't think it scans for LTE if 3G is active. So if you're streaming something or an app is syncing it will never pick it up. The default scan rate is set at 300 seconds, not sure if 3G needs to be dormant that long or not though.

Living in Denver where they are FINALLY deploying LTE but in my area it's strong. Also notice the same that it's taking my phone forever to switch to LTE. Compared to my M7, the M8 stays with LTE longer and the speeds are faster.

HTC One M8 reception worse than M7

I just got my new M8 today. Did the update, activated it, did the profile & PRL update, etc.
I am constantly getting the message that I am roaming on data. It seems to go back and forth between roaming and not roaming. Even outside I only get 1 bar of LTE and the LTE signal is a good 10dBvm worse than my old M7. My M7 never switched to roaming in the same location.
Anyone else noticing worse reception on this phone than the old HTC One?
I'm having the same issue.

I was worried bout the same myself. In the office with the M7, I wan't able to get LTE, but luckily with the M8 I am able too. I would have your phone checked at a corporate Sprint Store to see if it's faulty

I had the same issue yesterday when I upgraded my radios to the new version (1.54). I was stuck in 3G roaming at my house which was normally low end LTE service before the upgrade. After flashing the radios I did a Profile and PRL update using WIFI, then restated my M8. After the restart I am back to having LTE coverage floating around -90-95 dBvm. I also notice that if LTE fails to connect swithing airplane mode On/Off helps as well as dialing *18 from the dialer. Hope it helps.

I already did the profile/prl updates, and my phone isn't stuck on 3G. It will go 3G roaming, then 3G on sprint, then LTE. Seems to not be able to make up its mind. On my old phone it would usually toggle between LTE and 3G in this area, but NEVER did it go roaming. Even when I'm on WIFI I still get the annoying roaming notification in the notification bar every 5 minutes.
I also noticed my WiFi download speed on wireless AC is significantly worse than my M7. I used to be able to get 70mpbs on a speed test, this phone won't even break 12mbps. When I first turned the phone on it would only work on WiFi for the first 3 seconds after connecting and then it would stop. I had to keep connecting and disconnecting to WiFi to limp the software update download along. After it updated it at least stays connected and working on WiFi, but a lot slower than my old M7.
This phone was purchased on a SWAC account so I'm not sure if a Sprint store (which is 40 minutes away for the nearest one) would swap it for me.
Moved to Q&A...all questions should be posted in Q&A.
Thank You,

[Q] Bad firmware flash effecting 4G connectivity?

My M8 has had pefect 4g and 3g connectivity since I got it. It was a replacement for my first one that was horrible at connecting to anything. Over the weekend I noticed 4g not connecting as frequently as it should, in areas supposedly blanketed by lte coverage in my area.
If I toggle airplane mode, 4g connects and usually stays connected, so it can't be a circuit fallback issue. But when I travel away from that tower, it reverts to 3g and almost never reconnects to 4g until I do another airplane mode toggle.
Is it possible I've mucked up something with a firmware flash? I've flashed the harman/kardon firmware early in the week last week, but since these issues I've tried going back to the stock firmware and also the OTA firmware, but the issue remains.

I'd go to a sprint store and compare behavior of your with one on display.
Some people believe after firmware updates their M8 started active up. But usually it's loss of 3G. But anything is possible.
But I'd get a reference first. 4G will be available on one spot on my drive to work one day and not the next. Not sure if it's bandwidth thing or tower work or what.
Parameters of when to go on to LTE may have changed in firmware. So it's less likely to bounce between 4G and 3G.
