Galaxy Gear Software "Bugs"? - Samsung Galaxy Gear

Hey guys, just recently got a new Gear from the Best Buy promo, and i'm running into a couple things about this.
1. I'm a flashaholic, but i think i noticed that every time i flash a new ROM or even, reinstall the Gear Manager app, i'm forced to wipe everything on my gear (aka reset it) in order to pair and use correctly...is there anyway to fix this? because this is just dumb imo
2. How is the Gear's compatibility with the Galaxy S III? I have a US variant, and i think i'm missing some features like Smart Relay..?
3. Also, not sure if this is device issue, but the Gear does not open up that options/settings menu when i double tap the screen like it's supposed to...not sure if this is due to device compatibility or what not?
Thanks all, other than these things, i'm loving this little thing, and it's definitely been turning some eyes.

bump...anyone?

You have to double tap with two fingers. And I agree with the reset thing. It is dumb for it reset but again there is hardly anything in it needs confuguring

Recent apps

Anyone else noticed that if you hold two fingers on any screen on the Gear you get a list of recently opened apps?
Much quicker to navigate this way sometimes.
You can also close the apps by swiping each one to the left.
Awesome tip. I didn't know that. Thanks.

Hmm ... Too bad that we can't clear the open apps.
I think we will see a lot of changes from Samsung with the gear. They rushed it to market, imho, without it being very mature. But then every new device has this issue.
I remember when people were complaining that the amount of available apps for Android paled in comparison to the iSuck devices.

You can also double tap
I knew about this but also if you double tap 2 fingers you get instant shortcut to volume / brightness settings and battery level
Wow this is a nice tip. Is this something that was in the manual that came with the device. I never read them
Doesn't this tip appear on menu that came with the box?

Rooting my gear tonight... Question

I was told if I root my gear I can use bluetooth tether and essentially run apps on my gear. The apps I'm looking to run are for my car alarm and ingress. So what I was wondering is what I was told true? And do I just have to root my gear or does my phone have to be rooted as well? Because right now I have the Note 3 completely stock and unrooted.

You dont need to root your gear in order to run custom apps, depending on what type of app it is tho they may or may not work..
I would read up on side loading applications first, test the waters out.. the apps you require may work straight out of the box by simply side loading them to your gear with out rooting.
Alternatively if you find the apps dont work, you can try loading my rom which includes a few library's, unlocked features & other various functions that some apps require in order to run correctly.
EDIT: Here is a simple guide on how to sideload applications: HERE

Thank you bro! Very helpful

Awesome thank you! I'll have to read up on how you sideload apps. I saw a YouTube video where guy was actually playing ingress on his watch, what was on his phone screen transferred to watch screen same for his car alarm app, he just didn't say if it was rooted or not I just figured it was lol. Sorry had to edit my post. I do think you probably needs to be rooted to run something like ingress since it's an online game and the gear can't run anything online like a game or Facebook so I guess maybe that's why it has to be rooted and use a Bluetooth transfer lol I'm a very big newbie when it comes to the gear.

Bluetooth tethering is the easiest way. If you root your watch you can actually install play store and download as if it's a tablet tethered. Some apps may need to be wifi spoofed with is a xposed module included in null.
Keep in mind your phone needs to be running an international rom. I had to get rid of my T-Mobile rom for an international to enable Bluetooth tethering. Wasn't the watch holding me back, rather the phone itself

front soft keys are gone!!

so, my front soft keys somehow disappeared, and I cant get them back; in the settings menu, there is no longer an option for them, and I have no clue how they went away...
any suggestions?
I uninstalled xposed framework, and gravity box, in case that was the issue, and have rebooted many times, but still not there..
thanks!
Not sure if you can or if it would help but did you try another launcher? Maybe a reset but not sure if that would even work.

Is your expanded desktop on from xposed?
Try factory reset as your last resort. Did you mess around turning them off with xposed?
Sent from my LG-D959 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
-tried a different launcher, and it didnt work
-re-installed xposed, and gravity box, and made sure expanded desktop was OFF, and it didnt work
-rooting had nothing to do with it, as I rooted a week ago, and everything was fine until last night
thanks so much!
This is one of the reasons I've been leaving my Flex stock til we get a recovery. I know with the G2, zips were made to shrink the keys. Not sure if you could even get them back if you had a zip like that. Maybe you can search G2 threads and find a way. Sorry I can't help ya.
yeah, I even did a factory reset just now, and they are still not there; even in the settings menu, the "front screen buttons" entry is gone..
I guess I'll take it back to T-mobile today and tell them I want it replaced..its only 11 days since I got it, so it shouldnt matter..
I cant imagine rooting had anything to do with it, since I rooted a week ago, and its worked perfectly until it just went out last night

Before you do that you should try restoring with wolfgart's thread downloads. If you're going to be changing stuff, its good to know how to fix a brick.

good advice; but frankly, after only 11 days, I dont even want to mess around with that.
plus, I am not sure if there is even a complete restore for Tmobile version yet
Can you pull your build.prop via adb and enable the software keys like that and push it back?

i thought about doing that, actually, but it was alot easier to just return it and get a new one today.
If it happens again, which it better not, I will try that.
I think Gravity Box was the culprit, after reading through the 500+ pages of that thread; it seems to play havoc at times with soft keys, so users beware..
That was one of the reasons why i was debating on getting this phone. Nothing beats a physical button.(that works...)

Omni ROM NO Samsung Hub

I recently installed the Omni 4.4.2 20140306-tolte-NIGHTLY on my Tmo GN2 because I need the Bluetooth tethering option. However, I need Samsung Hub so I can install gear manager on my phone. I tried installing the apk file with no success. Can someone please help?

I'd bet this is yet another case of Samsung designing software to break on anything than their own firmware.
Most likely. I've read that as long as I have a deodexed international custom ROM, I can make it work. The international ROM gives me the Bluetooth tethering option I need and a deidexed version skies me to install Samsung apps.

The whole point of many people working on projects such as Cyanogenmod and Omni on Samsung devices is to remove all of Samsung's bloatcrap.
In the case of Gear - Why would anyone purchase it when there are cheaper and better options that are fully compatible with all Android devices instead of Samsung's restricted bull****?
It's utterly stupid that the Gear, which (given all of its onboard processing resources) should be able to operate in a more standalone fashion than any of the other smartwatches out there is, instead, the MOST dependent on its host device!
I appreciate the feedback. When I purchased the Galaxy Gear, I guess I assumed I could make it do what I wanted to do since we all pretty much have those capabilities when it comes to rooting and third party custom ROMs. I'm sure there is another way, a back door, if you will to get through installing gear manager. My first thought was to find the APK file and install it that way, but the procedures I've tried doesn't seem to work. If there isn't a way yet, then this is something for the techies to try and sort out.

I think I might've found it, but I can't verify because I don't have my gear with me, but I searched aptoide, found gear manager and installed it to my phone. I'll reply later if this works with my device.

No luck. Back to square one. The application downloaded and installed and even paired to my device, but nothing else showed up on my gear.

Gear Manager UI Changes

Check out these 2 screen shots. Some days I have one version and the other days the next. Does anyone have any idea why it changes?
Thanks.
The second one looks like its for Gear S.
But why does it change on it's own?

Every couple of days it changes. It did it again over the weekend. Very Strange.
I've noticed the same oddity of the very useful transfer buttons coming up only initially, then quickly going away. Even when they were there, the transfer to gear failed.
I really am looking towards android wear now, Samsung isn't keeping up with a unified experience using only Samsung devices...

I've had to revert back to Android after not getting notifications on my Gear. I'm looking into getting the Gear S if this keeps up and hope whatever app market Samsung uses has the Gmail app.
