I tried the OTA on my rooted C5303:
Setup stops after reboot: not possible to install new software, please retry..
Keep 12.1.A.0.266 - It looks like OTA is not possible on rooted phones (like in the past)

I downgraded my phone to 303.ftf using orange UK and rooted and applied CWM but when my phone was attached to PCC I got a massage saying update is available to JB. I am wondering if I applied the update I will be able to keep the root and CWM ?

does voodoo ota rootkeeper work in preserving root if we update from 254 to 257 via the sony official ota update and not via FTF files? just curious
still waiting for my update to arrive; on Generic UK (from clove) and located in MN, USA.
thanks!

I'm not 100% that the .257 update is available via ota, you have to get via SEUS or PC Companion, and i dont think rootkeeper will work, as the .257 firmware patches the exploit previously used.

ahh.. good to know.. from what i had heard, i assumed the update would come via the phone's sony update center app. i think i may try to hold out for the update to come ota if possible to see if i can keep my root
thanks again!

The update is available via Sony update Centre, and it will obliterate ROOT. Hopefully a new exploit can be found
There are prorroted stock .257 roms in the development section
I didn't use any OTA root keeper and updated to 257 via OTA, and root was kept.

You are referring to the 257 update via Sony Update Centre app? It will not remove root when you update.

My apologies, I installed the .257 via Sony Update Service, which treated it like a new phone. For some reason the OTA update won't install on my phone, it always fails. I rooted with vRoot, so not sure if that helps or hinders :/
hi guys, I heard from many Chinese users on Gfan bbs, that they actually have a ROOTED 534 and just did an update via OTA (yes via the phone, NOT PCC or US) and their ROOT STAYED!! hearing around 4,5 people already who confirms it.
I gonna try it soon with my wife's white Z1~I thnk

Yes, root will be kept if you update to 257 via OTA.
Can anyone tell me which FTF I can use from. 253 that get OTA updates?? The global one is not getting ota updates.

You have ftf of generic ROMs and if you flash 534, generic, you'll be able to flash via OTA (you'll get update right away) and update to 257 and preserve root

Hi ya'll
I bought a Xperia Z1 second hand on eBay and found that even though its stock ROM and bootloader is locked - its rooted with some dodgy chinese superuser app. It is running 4.2.2 and keeps saying update available but it keeps failing when I try to install an OTA update that seems to be available.
1. Is it failing cause its rooted?
2. How do I unroot it so I will get the 4.3 OTA?
Thanks in advance.

Yes you can't update via OTA if it's rooted. grab a ftf in one of the firmware threads on here for the Z1 and do it manually.

Use flashtool to flash a stock rom
Thanks for the quick responses. Do i grab a 4.3 FTF file or 4.2.2? If I grab 4.3 will my bootloader unlock camera fix not get installed? Is that installed via OTA only?

Actually no, OTA still works even on rooted phones. That's how people can have root on 4.3 firmware with locked boot loader - they get the root on 4.2 and then update it via OTA. I did it myself, so I'm sure it works this way.
Seems like OP has different issue.
Still, solution is flashing an ftf, yeah.
OTA definitely works on rooted phones. Try installing SuperSU from the playstore, that will get rid of the chinese spam, then run the update again. if that fails just go for Flashtool. good luck!

Yeah. I ended up flashing 4.2.2 then got the OTA update. Now running CM11. Had a scary moment where I flashed TWRP from a thread here into the boot partition and I got the red blink of death, but must have been the wrong recovery to flash.

So.. I was on 14.2.A.1.136 (4.3) stock firmware.. I wanted to root and I had to downgrade to 4.2.2 then root then flashing 14.2.A.0.290 (4.3) firmware.. Thanks to @shem2409 and @[NUT] for this method.
Anyway.. After rooting and flashing and all of that.. I received an OTA update for the stock 14.2.A.1.136 firmware.. And I was really surprised because what I know is that you lose the OTA updates and pc companion updates capabilities after you root your phone.
So my Question is.. If I updated the firmware OTA will I lose thr root? I can't afford to root it again for at least 3 weeks because my laptop is on the maintenance right now ..and I need the root privileges.

How big is that OTA update?
Try, if you can flash it it could work and you could actually preserve root, maybe even recovery but in 99% of cases you'll get error.
OTA update can't be flashed on rooted device (but, as I said, there were few times it actually worked if it's small, few mb update)
But this is update from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 so I doubt it'll work.

OTA updates with root are fine, but you may well lose root, just as you would flashing a FTF or updating via Pccompanion.
The issue with OTA updates is if you have an unlocked bootloader.

That's not correct mate.
Try to downgrade, root and install recovery then try to update via OTA - you'll fail.
Only one or two OTA updates worked on rooted Z1.
I have rooted Z1 with locked bootloader and OTA will always said - error while trying to flash, update your device through pc companion.
I'm 100% certain...

OK, the few times I tried it I had no problem, but I have only ever done it a couple of times..
It's 154.5 Mb, my bootloader is still locked only my device is rooted so I will go ahead give it a try and see what happens if it fails or I lose the root I can again downgrade and root right?
Yes, but you can also just root the FW anyway

If you want to update, then download FTF. You will loose root. Or use NUTS pre rooted rom. If you want to root yourself, look over to cross development and use easy root tool v8. Then also download nuts xzdual for locked boot.
