Don't think you'll get an answer as this question has been asked countless times.
As of last month, you don't need to unlock the bootloader to get root on 4.3
But you need to downgrade to 4.1.2 (257) and root using doomlord's exploit. Then install recovery. After that choose a rom of your choice (based on the latest .266 or .201).
For noob's infor:
a. the downgrade is necessary as you need root and doomlord's exploit for rooting works only up to version .257.
b. rooting is simply needed so that you can install recovery (CWM is good)
c. after which all will be wiped out by the new rom which will be flashed with its recovery and root :good:
And before you ask where these files are: search in the various forum, notably "android development" and "General" sections

You'll need flashtool to flash .254 (full firmware). Note that flashtool will only work if all the drivers are installed in your computer (there is an installer inside flashtool directory, after installation - double click on that to install the drivers)
Hunt around for the .254 ftf and .257 (kernel only) if you can't locate it in the link I gave you.
[The .254 in the link is "kernel" only - you want the full firmware (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2311964)
The link to cwm: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2649923 but I prefer this one (simpler): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2444605

New to Sony, need to ask few Q before root/unlock BL/rom

Hi Sony users
Finally got my Sony Xperia Z1
specs:
C6903
basebans: 8974-xxxxx
kernel: 3.4.0
Build: 14.1.G.2.257
Serial: BH902xxxxxxx
I just tried chinese vroot and it doesnt work, found on another thread it's not yet supported for .257 firmware.
So wanted to check if I can flash another stock rom as this phone is bought from t-mobile and think it's branded
(under software info it says: TELEKOM-LTE_14.1.G.2.257)
Coming from HTC (had few of them) this is another world with different flashing tehniques, bootloader, flashing stock roms, recoveries..
What I would like to know, I need root, which is simpliest way to do it?
Flash another stock rom firmware like this one?
C6903 14.1.G.2.257 Central Europe 1276-4314_R2A
Via flashtool?
Thanks for any info...
Please read the guides.
Read the sticky threads here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z1/development
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z1/general
and read this thread (This one tells you how to get root on .257)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2505796
You don't need to read all the thread, just the first few posts with the info.
Thanks, I've been reading those since yesterday, but one question before I start to recheck.
Currently downloading unbranded central europe 1.534 and 2.257
want to flash 1.534 then root via VROOT and upgrade via OTA to latest, will that go ok or will I loose root?
Also, do I need to to TA backup before proceeding with anything via flash tool? Or is that only before going to custom roms/custom recovery?

Use kingo* root instead of Vroot (They will both work, but kingo gives you an English SUperSU not a Chinese one)
If you root and then OTA you will keep root.
You only need a TA backup if you unlock the bootloader, which you do not need to do to root, or install recovery or install stock based custom roms.
You only need to unlock the bootloader if you are going to install custom kernels or custom roms that need a custom kernel (AOSP,CM etc)
*You should be aware that kingo is currently not supported by XDA, I do believe that vroot is in the same situation. XDA do not believe this is for malicious reasons and kingo and vroot are working on new version which don't do this. However, the only way to root a Z1 is via one of these 2 programs.
Thanks for the tips, re-read needed topics and succesfully flashed .534 fw, rooted and now updating over OTA

Help! Recovery for LB

Hello Goodmorning, can anyone teach me how to install recovery for 4.3(.569) JB?
Thanks in Advance.
If you're already rooted - XZDualRecovery
If you don't have root, then it's a little more complicated, as there is no method to root 4.3 directly without unlocking the bootloader.
You have a few choices -
1. Unlock bootloader to root.
2. Downgrade to 4.2.2, root and flash a prerooted rom.
3. Wait for an exploit to be found to root 4.3.
All this information is readily available around the Z section, so please search in future.

Rooting

I have latest official firmware JB 4.3(12.1.A.0.266).
Now i want to root it.
Is there any way.
Thanks
Yes there is. However you need to unlock your bootloader for this.
Tutorial for Bootloader unlocking: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2354721
Tutorial for Rooting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2646193
However for unlocking bootloader you need to create a backup of the TA partition and this requires root.
So there is an loop in this issue.......
What some users do:
- Downgrade back to 4.1.2 (see my tutorial about Flashing with Flashtool)
- Root it
- Backup TA
- Unlock bootloader/Install CWM
- Install custom 4.3 rom with root

Those who do not want to unlock bootloader are waiting for @DooMLoRD to release an exploit for official firmware JB 4.3(12.1.A.0.266).
I am one of them.

[help] need infos on latest rom and latest root method

hello I am an old Z user , but it got stolen 6month ago...
I just got a new one, I'm not a noob but I'm lost on what is the latest rom to install and the proper way to root it as I'm sure old methods aren't working anymore...
from what I roughly understood, you need to unlock the bootloader now?
if yes I would need help on that!
(I heard about some "framework" stuff to install as well)
thanks for helping !

latest ROM is 4.3 - build number 10.4.1.B.0.101
You only need an unlocked bootloader if you want custom ROMS such as CM, PAC etc with custom kernels. Cant flash custom kernels if on locked bootloader
Unlock bootloader - http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/development/tutorial-xperia-z-zl-bootloader-t2153261
To root you will need to be on a 4.2 ROM, once rooted you can install a recovery then you can install a rooted 4.3 ROM or custom ROM
Follow this method to root on stock rom - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327472
(additional guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/development/guide-how-to-root-101-firmware-lb-t2656698)
Follow this method to gain recovery - http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/general/ub-lb-xzdualrecovery-xperia-z-qa-thread-t2477769
Should be ready to flash stuff
thanks a lot!!!
was lost into all the new infos...
so to install 4.3 - 10.4.1.B.0.101 no need to unlock, right?
(I only need the sony rom)

Correct, you do not need to unlock the bootloader if you are going to install the 4.3 - 10.4.1.B.0.101 ROM.
You can either do this on flashtool by flashing a 4.3 FTF or you can root and install recovery and flash a rom zip file

<SOLVED>[Q] TA backup with firmware 14.3.A.0.683 (Sony Xperia Z1 C6903)

Hi,
I'm trying to backup the TA on my Xperia Z1 (C6903) running the stock KitKat firmware (14.3.A.0.681). From what I understand though, you need root to backup the partition, but to get root, you need an unlocked boot loader. I've seen a few tools that roots without unlocking the boot loader, but I need to downgrade the firmware to at least Android 4.2.2. Downgrading requires an unlocked boot loader.
Are developers working on a root-and-unlock tool for 14.3.A.0.681? Is there already a tool out there?
Thanks in advanced. Sorry for my arrogance.

You do not need an unlocked bootloader to get root and or to downgrade. Although yes, you would have to downgrade to 4.2 to get root. Just use flashtool to downgrade and pick a software to root

Cool
Just a couple more questions. Any suggested 4.2.2 and 4.4.2 firmwares to flash (if you can, link them here)? To root 4.2.2, do I simply click on the unlock icon shown in link?

I've used vroot 1.7.3 english and everything installed fine. However, when I installed the Root Checker app from Google play it reads "Sorry, this device isn't properly rooted."
Here's what I did / planning, in order:
1) Downloaded C6903 14.3.A.0.681 Global 1277-2880_R5C
2) Downloaded 14.1.G.1.534 downgrade FTF [NUT]
3)Pasted the 2 FTFs in the Firmware Folder under Flashtool
4)Flashed 14.1.G.1.534 downgrade FTF [NUT] using Flashtool from Androxyde (latest version)
5)Installed vroot English (1.7.3)
6)Clicked on the Root button. Phones reboots twice
7)After phone first start I was greeted with an error message from "Kingsapp".
8)Installed Root Checker from Google Play
9a)"Not properly rooted" <-- I'm right here
9b)If "root successful", proceed to flash C6903 14.3.A.0.681 Global 1277-2880_R5C
I did some research and people are pointing everywhere, vroot, bin4ry's rooting method, 360 (can't install).
Did I lose my TA partition? My X-Reality goodies?
What am I doing wrong?

Okay so now you are still on .534 firmware right? Do you have usb debugging on?
And also try rooting with bin4ry if vroot doesn't work for you.
Don't worry, you won't lose x-reality unless you've unlocked your bootloader

"Su upgrade failed. Missing root permission"
Yes, I'm on the .534 firmware. USB Debug turned on.
I'll try bin4ry's root now.
Once I'm through TA backup, I just need to flash 14.3.A.0.681 Global 1277-2880_R5C?
