[Q] Windows Phone 8.1 AND Interop Unlock, can they stay together? - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
First of all excuses in advantage if my English won't be proper.
I'm a new user and I've searched (hoping in the right way) if this question had already been answered -and found that it hadn't.
So I'm opening this thread to know if someone with more experience already knows if the new update to WiINDOWS PHONE 8.1 can *TOLERATE* INTEROP UNLOCK.
In my specific case I've interop unlocked my Ativ S - thanks to GoodDayToDie, Wolf and the other Devs' guides and tools -, now I'm on GDR3 but some of the features that used to work with GDR2 don't work anymore, But this isn't the point..
My question is: "Given the *nature* of interop unlock and its way of managing the features that it allows us to use, will it be compatible -in your opinion- with the new OS? (I'm talking overall about the third tile row hacking, which should be now manageable directly from the normal settings of the phone, do you think they could conflict?)
Regards.
Gidannifico.

Your english isn't bad, you're completely understandable.
Normally, I wouldn't be able to answer this question, it might be possible for Samsung/Microsoft to patch the interop unlock (I really don't know, correct me if I'm wrong), but wolf just posted he found yet another method to interop unlock Samsung devices, and he'll release the unlock after WP 8.1. (link: https://twitter.com/xda_wolf/status/455374020347965440). So, 8.1 should be safe and good to go for you - but I don't know about future updates.
EDIT: The 3rd tile column is just a registry entry, up to now it was only editable with interop unlock, and the new option should just toggle that entry, so there should be no conflicts whatsoever

thank you 4 the answer Thomas,i'll hit the 'thank button' as soon as I turn on My pc,now i'm with the Ativ-beaSt-
If I undestrood what you mean the most reasonable thing to do Tomorrow is to hard reset My Device in Order not to get any possibile 'complication' with the update, then upgrade to WP8.1 and then wait 4 wolf's 3rd Method release..didn't Know it cause I don't have a Twitter account-poor me-.
in any case My device'll be upgraded and if I'll feel the needing to go back I can Always flash again GDR2(I think there won't be any problem to flash even with WP8.1)
Regards and thank you again.

New MDA: Step by step???

I have been looking at this site (and others linked to this site) for the past three days waiting for my T-Mobile MDA to arrive.
Could someone please post a new phone, out-of-box step-by-step guide to what to do first as far as resets, ROM, unlocks, software, and tweaks??
I have at least a ream of paper with posts printed but can not seem to get it organized into what to do- when.
BTW- I had a Cingular Rzr- after I unlock SIM can I use my Cigular SIM to access my contacts saved on it with my TMobile MDA?
Thanks so much for all of your help.

Detail will make for a long post but here is a few quick steps of poular MDA setups.
Two General Routes you can take with bringing your MDA up to date with the latest in cool additions.
Route 1: Does not require you to flash a ROM
- Apply those tweeks available here, that let you customize your MDA for performance and useability. These are in the form of Registry Modifications. They can be entered manually through one of the popular utilities like Total Commander or Resco Explorer. These tweeks are also available in the form of a .Cab file for easy installation. There is also a really nice app here for applying those tweeks on the fly (Registry Wizard)
Route 2: Requires you to load a cooked Rom (Gives you upto date versions of WM 5, Radio ROM, etc...) which gives you a better performing MDA, plus the lates capabilities.
- When going this route you have to be careful, mistakes can give you a bricked MDA.
1. Buy a 128mb MiniSD (Your going to use this to backup your original ROM incase of a mistake, problem, or you just want to revert back to the old ROM.)
2. Backup your ROM using the method described in the Wizard_Service_Manual.pdf (Found on the FTP server)
3. Now choose one of the great cooked ROMS (Xelencin, MrClean, PDAMobizEdition, etc...) Each has its own customizations. Some even include all the Registy mods.
Good luck.
I realize that it would take a while but possibly it could be added to the FAQ section? It seems that many people have asked for it in the past but one has never been provided. It would be nice not to have to be a return poster asking how to save my brick!
I definitely want to add a cooked ROM. The reason why I (and others) ask for the walk-through (in the correct order) is so we don't end up with a brick and you guys are the best!
I just don't want to unlock my CID with loki if it is unlocked in Eelencin's ROM or forget to add the java upgrade after the ROM, or when (and where computer or phone and Active Sync) I should download registry commander program... do you see what I mean.
I have the information from the forum but I have no idea when to do what-
Please help all you Obi Won's- you are our only help!
thanks again-
The problem is, what one person sees as a necessary step in setup, others dont.
Some say upgrade ROM to latest, others say dont. Some say use the latest from your telecom provider, others from hardware manufacturer. Some say set display to 10% others to 50%...and the list goes on
It is, and must, be down to the individual user. Read the manual (hehe hands up who actually has), try a few things. If it goes wrong you can always Hard Reset and start again. If you get stuck, or want to know the best setting for a particular option, come back n ask.
This is a great thread!
I'm confused about where to start, especially because i have a G4.
I decided to stay with the latest Tmobile ROM since its more difficult to unlock etc. (i couldnt find anything about unlocking a G4 here)
So i got this freeware program called TaskManager and im pretty sure i can edit the registry through it, so i decided i would just tweak the registry eg. change the cache and history to the memory card etc. to improve performance and i wont mind a little overclock either
Can you guys give me a link to a list of registry tweaks?
And do you think im making the right choice by just tweaking the registry rather than trying to unlock it or anything?
And am i missing anything? Like i said im kinda confused about where to start with a G4.
Thanks from a Noob.
hey sup. welcome. firts of all u are way behind. your rom is past due even your radio. why dont u try faria's new rom version 2 but please follow instructions clearly because u do need to unlock and downgrade and all that good stuff to get that bad boy looking sweet. hola
What to do, in what order

First, find out if you have a G3 or a G4. Since it's new, more likely it's a G4?
First thing I would do is completely unlock it, if it's a G3 by running Lokiwiz TWO TIMES - sim unlock AND CID unlock (emphasis is intentional and very important! - and make sure you get confirmation and reboot after each unlock step). If it's a G4, you may have to pay to get CID unlock.
Next, find out what version ROM you have, and upgrade to the most recent "official" ROM from TMobile if your ROM is not as recent (see the FTP).
Then read every post by Dr. Puttingham, every post by Faria, every post by Molski, every post by Menneisyys, every post by Risidoro, every post by vijay555, every post by me (haha, just kidding - pay no attention to the man behind the curtain) - geez, this feels like my Academy Awards speech - who did I leave out? Read everything you can by every senior member, every guru who's been there, done that, tried it all.
THEN, you can start having fun. Try anything else you want to after that!
this may sound lame but just be patience and keep reading, that is the best way you are going to learn because it is more confusing when everyone tells you different stuff.
Read and ask questions as you go along. That is how most if not all of us start out. There is no dummy guide here. If you ask some people they would say this is not the beginners forums to be exact. Sorry if I sound like an A**hole but it is just straight solid advice.

Can the 'Program tab' be expanded and more…

Hi,
I have two questions regarding my Touch Diamond.
1st) When we look at the program tab we get 2 sections allowing (3x3) 9 shortcuts to a program. I would like to know it this tab can be modified to store more shortcuts
2nd) At HTC.com there is a new ROM update. When I look at my ROM version, it says: 1.37.172.3 NLD (I suppose this is an older version).
I was wondering if installing this update would delete my default programs.
My phone is from Vodafone and has by default certain preinstalled programs installed by Vodafone on it. If I were to lose these programs, I would lose access to certain features that I use
Hope someone can answer this for my.
Cheers!
2) Yeah, unfortunately flashing the ROM will erase all your settings/installed programs.
1) Sorry, I don't know how to answer this one.
2)Yes. With the new ROM, your phone will lose all the installed programs. Contact Vodafone and try to know if they are releasing this update with their programs already instaled.
On the other hand, you can try to save all your programs with an application called "Sashimi" that saves your programs in order to restore them after a ROM upgrade.

1st) yes... you can... but unfortunately I can't remember how. try a search, but I was reading that it's very simple to do...
Thank for you answers all.
Pretty weird that there is a rom update, but that my service provider does not support this. Iow I am forced to keep the current version.
@ Leopardone: That is great, too bad that when searching these forum on 'Program tab' it gives too much results to accurately find something.

Actually, you can't. What you can do, is add more buttons. Unfortunately, you can't put any link in those which makes the whole procedure rather useless.
I thought there was a registry tweak to add a few. I'll check into it.
EDIT: Nope, above poster is right.
There's a registry tweak around here that shortens the distance between icons and fits more icons to Programs panel. Search for it.

[Q] Adding Custom Theme/Tile Colors to Samsung Focus S

O.K., so I Chevron-unlocked & interop-unlocked my Focus S yesterday, and then I sideloaded Advanced Configuration Tools v1.5; it installed and runs just fine, but I get an error message that it "can't apply changes" whenever I try to add a new theme color!
I was able to do these kinds of things with my original Focus without any problem, but AT&T gave me a new Focus S to replace the Focus because I had problems with both Focus phones I had.
All I want to do at this point is ADD (not REPLACE) some new custom colors on my Focus S - am I completely out of luck until someone figures out how to get access to this phone's sytem to enact changes like this?
Thanks,
Dennis

damn, really? NO registry access? ugh...
my quantum had a registry editor built into the MFG settings! stupid samsung >:/
Hopefully Heathcliff or gooddaytodie will find a hack to enable the registry editor to work again. It looks like they have moved their efforts from the Samsung 2nd generation over to the 2nd generation HTC's for the moment but hopefully they will find a way soon.
Anyone know if a fix was ever found for this? I just upgraded to the Focus S and am missing my old Focus already. I really loved the ACT and the customization it allowed. Heathcliff's unlock tool worked great on my 1st generation phone. Really hope to see it work for the 2nd gen as well : )
Thanks!

Nope; nothing yet. No one's come up with a way yet to access the registry on 2nd generation WP7 devices.
I also have a Focus S, so I'm eagerly awaiting that, too!

Sad panda. I just got my focus s like 3 days ago. Am very tempted to return it and just wait for the Lumia 900. Though I have no idea if it will be any better as far as ease of customization and ability to access/edit registry.
At any rate, I appreciate the response and wish Heathcliff and company the best of luck! It's people like Heathcliff, Jaxbox, etc. that make me stick with WP7.
Check this out

That is true. Microsoft has made it even more difficult for us to find working exploits in order to do things such as modify the registry and modify look & feel. It will be quite some time before real progress is made. I wouldn't expect for anything to happen soon, but please keep checking at these forums to see if anything has been done.

@snickler: stupid little question to that: shouldn't it be possible to edit the keys in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive?
as far as I know from Windows 7 and 8, editing this hive doesn't need administrative privileges. Am I wrong?

With WP8, policies are enforced to limit modification to just about ALL parts of the registry. With what I've seen, certain apps (Nokia apps for instance) have specific certificates installed that gives them a specific right to a registry key. Basically Microsoft really didn't want us touching ANYTHING.

another silly question is windows phone 8 ever gonna get hacked? I mean did you find anything so far? it seems that you cannot touch the registery in no way ... in other way you cannot send fake xml to phone that it can accepted as developers? (can't we make a fake webservice?!)
well then how can we access this?! did you get any attention for that? how long do you think it will take to get this windows hacked? (even an approximate time will do help much )
thanks
To be fair, that's the same as it was on WP7; apps couldn't even modify HKCU directly (short of being elevated by WP7 Root Tools). The early registry editors used high-privilege OEM drivers, not their own permissions. I'm hopeful there will be *something* we can tweak, but it won't be much until we find some EoP exploit.
EDIT: Asking "how long" is a ridiculous question. It's like asking how long until the current iOS version is jailbroken, or something like that. Nobody knows. Nobody can know. If we had the answers, it wouldn't be research. There could be a breakthrough this afternoon; hell, there could have been one last night. We could keep pounding on it for years. There's no point in even attempting a guess. This isn't something iterative, something where progress can be measured.
the fact that some of the guys have been able to find a way to read (but not write) to the registry is a start, but there's still a long ways to go. Considering Windows Phone 8 has been out since what, oct or nov of last year? There's even HeathCliff that has taken a glimpse in the .cabs. There's a way to run programs out of the sandbox, but even that is limited. Snickler wrote a registry reader, but doesn't allow editing of dword . And we've got GoodDayToDie's Webserver that *JUST* recieved the ability to read the registries, but its very picky. Slowly things are coming together and eventually with everyone looking, someone will stumble upon something. It's taken months to get this far.

All Windows Phone Comunity are trying to hack the OS, but for a lot of problems (secure boot, ecc), it's so hard.
Essentially the current roadblocks for flashing custom roms are Secure Boot and BitLocker, not to mention knowing how to write back to the new ROM files. For accessing internal apps and stuff, we are having trouble finding how to set/change permissions. There's a ton listed in the registry, but its not fun finding out the how atm.

Unhide MMS settings on Lumia Icon after Denim
AR2186 said:
Ok, I was able to get it to work using a modified version of the Windows 10TP for non-supported devices work-around. I edited the WPFlights.xml file to replace the "enable tethering" with "Unhide MMS APN". I am now up and running with on AT&T with my Lumia Icon (also tested/working on HTC One M8 for Windows from Verizon).
If you want to do this on your phone, basically follow the instructions here HOWTO: Install Windows 10 for Phones on Non-supported devices (and other hacks) but replace the WPFlights.xml with the one I have attached. One heads up, I had to install the full version of Fiddler and enable HTTPS before I could install the certificate
Warning: This could brick your phone, so use it at your own risk.
Thanks @RustyGrom r the awesome work you did on the workaround, this is a very powerful tool. Thanks @AlvinPhilemon for the help finding the registry location

Yes, I should have clarified I AM NOT running the Windows 10TP on my Lumia Icon. I only used the method for the inherited permissions so I could write to the registry.
I actually couldn't get this working in Windows 10 TP, only on Windows 8.1 on a Lumia Icon w/ 8.1.1 and an HTC One M8 with 8.1.1
Edit: I have now updated the original post for greater clarity

Thanks for the quick response! I browsed through the xml file and it appears that it makes other changes. I could be misunderstanding it.
Do I need to reset my device before applying this workaround?

No, don't reset your phone or you will lose it since it reverts back to the original OEM/Carrier settings. I left the XML basically intact except for the last part (see below) because I don't have a lot of experience (computers, and even more so xml/programming, is just a hobby of mine) and I figured it was safer to replace the "Enable Internet Tethering" option than try to add another option below and risk messing up the XML completely.
The Windows Insider App isn't all or nothing like Preview for Developers, so you can choose among a number of different options that seem to write to the registry in different locations or ways. Once you get in the app, you will have a few options. I don't believe it makes any other changes to the registry when you enable the MMS APN with my method, but if someone can find other changes than I will attempt to rewrite the method to make sure that doesn't happen.
Here is the XML that drives the registry change. Its found right at the bottom of the document, and my changes are in bold

I haven't risked updating the Windows Insider app to get it to work at the moment, waiting to see if they can figure out a workaround. That said, there is a thread in the WindowsCentral forums about getting it to work by installing and then deleting Nokia Access Point. Can't vouch for the method, but others have gotten it to work on T-Mobile.
Could anyone be more specific on how to enable those settings on Lumia Icon? I'm using it in Europe and I'm unable to use mms, so any help here is appreciated.
Cheers.

Please make sure you actually read the thread with the instructions, as it is clearly stated how to accomplish the hack. If you have further questions, please be specific.
For the Lumia Icon you need to have: A) Windows 8.1 and B) the OLD version of the Windows Insider app. You can then change the WPFlights.xml file to include the registry keys to unhide the APN. Basically you need to be able to take on write-access to the registry, and the updated Windows Insider app doesn't allow the hack to work.
For other phones with an SD card, you may be able to accomplish the same using the CustomPFD Registry Editor hack.

There is no way to get the MMS APN settings to show up unless you have the old Windows Insider app still and use the method I described. That said, people have had success getting the Icon to work on T-Mobile by hard resetting it without a SIM card in (see Windows Central Lumia Icon forums), inserting the T-Mobile SIM and setting the Internet APN settings. I imagine that could work on your M8 as well, but no guarantees obviously.
I was able to use my Verizon M8 on AT&T through the Windows Insider trick, but it was a bit finicky with SMS.
Hi,
I am a bit new here, but i really appreciate what you guys are doing. I have a question, because I do not succed in what is described here.
Indeed, I have a M8 with WP 8.1.1 (Verizon edition), but when I do the "How to install windows 10" tutorial, with or without your WPFlights.xml file, it failed at step 11: I have nothing except unauthorized, (empty screen under enroll). On the PC i do have "sending custom flighting response".
Can you help me to fix that ? Is it because I do nothave the "old" version of the app that you have mentionned ? How can I get ?
Thanks a lot !
