SD card usage after updating to Windows Phone 8.1 dev preview - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a small SD card (1.83 GB) inserted in my Lumia 525 that I'm using to store some music and images.
Before I updated my phone to Windows Phone 8.1 dev preview, I had roughly 100 MB of free space. Upon updating, it had suddenly gone down to 0 KB. Yet when I added up the data in the memory stick, it was only close to 1.7 GB, and thus should've had ~100 MB free.
I couldn't figure out what was happening, so I decided to format the memory stick. After formatting, I clearly had all of 1.83 GB free. Then I copied around 800 MB of music and around 600 MB of images. But after that, instead of having the expected ~400 MB of free space, I have just 12 MB. Just like before, the space had vanished magically. (Note that I did nothing other than just copy the files, though I did notice that copying the images took a long time unlike before.)
Even now, if I check the size of all the folders in the SD card, they add up to only 1.35 GB.

Yet, only 12 MB is free.
What is happening here? And no, I haven't installed any apps onto the SD card, and new apps are set to be installed into the phone's internal memory.
I was planning on buying a large SD card now that apps can be installed onto it, but if the space is just going to be eaten up, I'm not so sure.

Do you have "Show Hidden and System files" enabled in Folder Options?

Yeah, I do. "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and "Hide protected operating system files" option is unchecked. These are all there is in the SD card.
And now not just the SD card, but it also happens in the phone memory. Had 1.9 GB free. Copied 600 MB of images. Suddenly only 900 MB free. Might have to reset the phone to get that space back now. This is a real annoyance.

Mtp could hide a hold file system. Some of the elic hidden folders can be watched with mediaajdio2 plugin, but the best ghing you can do for investigate is to pu off the card and check the fs with a card reader. But there might be some morereally fs hodden folder, but 99% therd wont be

Thanks for the idea of using a card reader. That helped me get to the root of the mystery, though I don't know how to fix it yet.
Alright, so I formatted the SD card again, copied my music into it again, and checked the free space. No problems.
Next, I copied ~100 MB of images. Again, ~160 MB space was lost instead of ~100 MB.
And then, I put the SD card into the card reader. Here, it showed a hidden folder WPSystem. Inside, as shown below, it's as if it's keeping a slightly downscaled copy of every single image I copy into it.
This is where the space is going. And this is extremely irritating. I read comics and manga a lot on this phone, and they're most of the time in the format of seperate images, totalling upto several hundereds of MB. When each 100 MB means I lose like an additional 60 MB, it becomes a huge waste of space.
Does anyone know why this might be happening and what I could do to stop this? This wasn't happening until I updated to 8.1. If someone here has some time to kill, I'd be glad if they could copy a few hundred MB of images to their phone and see whether this occurs. Copying this much of image files into their phones is not something most people do, so this bug might be overlooked.

Swapper [0.1.3] - tool for creating and using swap

Simple application for "extending memory". Helps when you need some memory for non active applications (like music player + browser + maps + etc...).
Idea taken from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=482228
Requires root and SD/SDHC card.
Warning: SD card will be used as swap space. It can (and will) shorten SD card lifespan.
Application creates/rewrites swapfile.swp file on sdcard and mounts it as swap. It can use swap partition too. It can change swappiness behaviour ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3331080&postcount=33 )
Phone switches between tasks slower, but can run more programs in parallel.
Changes remains until reboot. Disable swap to eject/mount card.
It's my first application for Android. It goes as is, without any warranty. Use at your own risk.
Sorry for my English.
If You have any problems, please check http://code.google.com/p/a-swapper/wiki/Settings , it could contain some answers. If not, please feel free to fill bug.
Requested features
Configurable swap size
Configurable location of swap file (fixed location reset bug)
Autostart (some reports says it doesn't work)
Threaded swap creation
Widget
Memory buffer flusher (from pagubg)
Swap partition support
Permission fix
= finished = finished, needs testing = not finished

Consider changing the default swappiness behaviour, as described in my post at page 3 of the thread. With the default value, 60, the phone uses the impossibly slow swap too much and after some use the entire system becames unusable.
Lowering it to a lower value, like 20 or 10 makes it swap rarely, while still using the swap to not force applications to unload and the system is usable, even after long time use.
Does this really work? I tried it and set the swappiness to 10 and 20 and then went to the browser and loaded a bunch of "heavy" websites. After that I switched to the home screen and there was still a significant lag.
its working yes, program is probably good but swaping in embedded devices with so few memory like this is a terrible idea, keep testing anyway.
what maybe is worth the effort is looking at the kernel code and and recompile it removing first netfilter and some other unused things (or compile it as modules) to gain 1Mb or two, and gain significant speed removing the debug features that normal users doesnt want/need. there isnt much which can be done until someone figure out how to recover the other missing 128 mb who is said are eaten by graphic framebuffers.. i dont believe that.
Yes, there are some lags, but it's the best "user friendly" way now available not to close nessesary background applications as far as I know (correct me, if I'm wrong).
Working for me (I wrote application for easy turning it on and off - using swap only when nessesary, not all the time).

First off, nice work with my initial idea
Questions however: Can you make the swap space size configurable? Also, I see that you went with my original hunch of /sdcard/ . This poses some challanges: it is required that swap is turned off before you can mount the card as a flash drive in your PC. There are also other issues I will probably be able to think of when I'm not so tired.
A configurable option of either /system/sd/ (for LucidREM's JFvMod build) or /sdcard (for those who havent moved the Apps/Data/Caches to SD) would be ideal!
Thanks for making a great quick gui! I have no idea where to start with java.
If any of Swapper users use LucidREM's JFvMod build - please test swapspace placing to /system/sd/ . Thank you!
Question
Yep, I'll be that first guy to ask the question. I will accept the consequences. Where can yo direct me to better understand the settings/configuration options available? I would like to understand this before I make changes. Also as a starter if you could recommend an appropriate config for an 8gb class 6 sd card, I would appreciate it.
Thanks to all!
Just to remind you. Set the Swappiness to 10 before or immediately after creating swap or you would experience incredible slowness in a couple of minutes.
Settings:
Swap size = size of file for swapping. Here info for reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swap_space
Location = path where to place swap file (Locations button contains predefined paths, one is /sdcard/swapfile.swp, other is /system/sd/swapfile.swp - for those, who divided their sd cards for application sorage).
In program you have swappiness option - range 0-100 - how much you would like to swap. My tests showed that best performance/usability (for my sd+phone) is 32 MB swap and swappiness = 10. Your preferences can differ.
Changes are saved till system restart. After restart you should reenable swap and reset swappiness. Configuration about swap size and location is saved in program. Before configuring swap path please disable swap.
In default place swap is blocking mounting procedure of phone to pc. If you want to mount it, you should disable swap.
About sd configuration - here is one link with instructions. I haven't done it myself yet because of slow sdhc ("quick" sd card is only 1 GB) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=480582
thanks
Thanks for the info. I apreciate not only the answers but a source to learn from. Rock on.
It makes the camera usable! Thanks!
I've been trying every convievable combination of swap size, location and swap levels.
I started with 32Mb and 15 which proved to be unstable then 10. So then 16Mb w/ swap @ 15 and 16Mb/10 which still provided to be unstable.
All the above combination tested on both /sdcard and /system/sd.
Is a class 4 just to slow for this to work? I'd imagine it wouldn't be but I cannot get this to run stable period.

I think it was discussed somewhere else. You need at least class 6 if you want to get any speed out of anything, especially "apps/caches on sd". Not sure about this swap deal. Sdhcs are considerably cheaper now days, I got my class 6 (8gb) for $18 from MicroCenter.
Good luck
So how do I revert to factory swap settings? I know I can set the swappiness back to 60, but what tells the system where the swapfile is?
when i run the lucidrems location save button, it doesnt start teh program. My cache is moved to the sdcard so i thought i should use this one. When i do it doesnt work.. if i switch back to the defualt it works fine again.. is it ok?

I haven't tested this, it's theoretically working, but I haven't made mod myself. I'm now waiting for new SDHC class 6 card from ebay, will mod and test it. At the moment I have slow SDHC card. Swapper + mod will be too much for it
If you can, please check (after launching swapper swap on), do you have file named swapfile.swp in /system/sd.
This works great, I'm using 16mb/10swappiness on a class 2 and it works great with no crashes thus far!
is this bad for your SD card? Because it says " * SD card will be used as swap space. It can (and will) shorten SD card lifespan. "

Yes, it is bad for your SD card, you "quoted" that sentence from the OP.
SD cards have a limited write cycle (10.000 or 100.000 times per "sector"), using it for swap in a specific region will shorten your card life.

"Not enough memory delete some items"

Hello,
I am new with Android and I need your help...
I recently bought the 8GB galaxy s. I have about 13 applications installed from the market in the internal sd and I have bought an external sd of 16GB yesterday where I placed all my music and photos. Suddenly today I try to open the galery and the "Not enough memory delete some items" comes up. I checked the internal SD card and from a total og 5.78GB I now have 160kb left!!! I checked where alla the spce went and it went to a file called Adroid. I think this happened since I put the external sd. Does anyone know what might have happened..
Thanks,
Chryssa
Make sure that the directory you copy your music files are really the microsd card. Lots of people get confused between these two directory.
Other than that check what directory in the android directory are taking up the space. The name of the directory will often correspond to the application.

Thanks for replying. The directory is the right one. I found the problem the file named Android which had inside a folder named Data and in there com.cooliris.media- cache was eating all my free space for thumbnails of photos! I deleted itand I got back all the space with no problems. I wonder why it did that though....

Bug most likely. Glad you resolved the problem.

Keep in mind there is a different between RAM (512Mb) and Storage space (8GB).
the error message could also have been referring to not enough RAM memory, rather than not enough Storage memory.

I get this message from time to time recently as well. I have lots of ram space left and lots of internal memory left as well. Whenever I get this message, the phone cannot read the internal and external sd cards. I usually solve it by wiping cache.
Anyone else with this issue?
Yes! I just tried to download an app yesterday, and the phone told me I did not have enough space. I have 1.7 GB left of internal storage not to mention the 1.6 GB of Internal SD card storage. Any idea what is causing this?

You can't absolutely make everything go to the SD card. System apps won't go and even if you go to the individual app settings and if offers you a "move to SD" option, many times it's only moving some data and often very little of that. In the camera, you do go to settings and change your storage location to SD card don't you?

Go into settings>Apps and on the 3 dots at the top right choose "sort by size". You'll see what apps are killing your storage. Facebook can be a storage killer also, mainly the reason I don't use the official app. Use the Samsung+ app and look at the storage also. You can delete all your apps cache there and maybe see what else is using a lot of storage.

On the very bottom there should be a setting to force allow apps on external. Then you could just move them from there.
But I would agree with the other users in this thread. Check which apps are using the most, clear all cache, and sometimes I'll uninstall and reinstall an app to reset the amount of storage it uses. For example, after clearing cache and data for Facebook, the app can still take up 200mb in storage when a fresh install would only be about 50mb.

You already did, you bought a phone with double the storage.
In my experience, it's best just to connect to your PC and see everything easier. Decide what to move onto the Micro SD card from there. That's how I like to organize stuff between Micro SD storage and internal storage. Most of my media (music, videos, pictures) is kept on my Micro SD card. When I shoot new video or take a bulk of new photos I just transfer to the appropriate folders on my Micro SD card through the phone's stock file app.
So once you've established the folders on both the Micro SD card and Internal storage, it makes transferring files between much more organized and efficient.

First of all use proper text layout if you want people to take notice & reply.
You type on a keyboard not a console so what is this continuous wall of text without proper commas, full stops or text breaks? :crying:
The black-grey streaking is common on darkthemed apps, use the search post to check previous posts on the same topic.
Secondly no one in the world gives full capacity as the advertised capacity like for example: 256G will get you ~220-240G, 128G =~108, 3TB~2.7TB etc
Why?
1)Storage space mentioned on products is usually in decimal format but OS's use binary format so it seems less &
2) some more space from that is usually kept separate for hidden system partitions

Sorry for continues text i didn't know that. My issue with Internal storage total capacity is on system storage settings it shows 242.46 total space and on es file explorer, cpu z and on pc it shows 225.81 Gb total space so i was confused about these two different storage capacities because i have used several phones in the past and they didn't show two different total internal storage capacity like this one this is the first time that i'm seeing something like this I don't know whether it's a software bug or manufacturer is cheating with customers so i was paranoid about these two different storage capacity i don't want the lesser storage that's 225.81 gb. No problem,
Some apps in android will show different and again different size might be shown in Windows because one might be calculating in binary and other in decimal system.
Try to install this and check the space reported.

Also sometimes on PC it might shown less because it might not be able to count some reserved space for android

I already do a factory data for like five times for each week since i bought this phone, the other on storage keeps filing up and i cant find the reasons why, i disabled auto update for system apps and software update as well as on playstore. But still keeps increasing day by day. Any solutions?
Question firmware version used...and phone model
Under developer mode..enable "CPU usage"
See..what app is busy doing stuff
or
install Catlog from f-droid see what's running and see error log
or
Run the antivirus app? or update firmware to latest ?
just..some thoughts
interesting issue..
Its a xiaomi redmi 9 global version 4/64 running the lates miui 12.0.3
Im sorry.im new to this but i cant find cpu usage on developers option. I also installed catlog but i dont know how to use it.and which anti virus are you refering to?also I already installed the latest firmware

or

or

Still cant detect anything with that. It only tells me how much storage i use but only shows the same data i can see on my file managaer
File manager
internal storage
show hidden files
miui
gallery
cloud
trashbin
delete all the files inside the trashbin.
hope it will help you.
I have the same problem, i tried factory reset how many times, hard reset 2x, the problem still exist. Waiting for firmware update but it takes time and the storage is full again while waiting. Any suggestions friends?
I wonder if the app MIUIREX can help. Any idea who already used this app??
Hi all,
my two cents here. It seems that somehow when info is deleted ends in a kind of partition that the cell can't reach or show. I've tried all the storage cleaning apps I could find to no avail.
When plugging to a PC it doesn't show the big files either. In fact, when you look at it as a drive connected to PC it seems to be full; however if you select the contents there's little occupation.
I've also promoted to miui 12 but the issue persists. I've noticed as well that it takes longer to fill when there's no SIM card inserted. It takes a couple of days instead of hours to fill the Other Files storage.
My only other option now is to try and root it with Magisk and try a custom ROM, but never done that before and I don't want to brick it if there's any other option.
PS - there are some other entries for this same problem in mi.com and other pages for this and other xiaomi models and all of them seem to be unfixed, so I wonder if it could be a HW problem instead.
I've had a bit of a time trifling with this device, it's a great bit of kit and a sweet deal. I had the same/similar issue and found that the MIUI local backups never expired. I found a long list of historic backups in the MIUI settings, you can delete them there or just delete MIUI>backups in File Manager. Then perhaps turn off local backups.
Hopefully this is the same for you, holla back.
Thanks for the hint, but no luck either. There's nothing, even toggling on the "hidden files" option, that takes a big amount of space in my device.
Probably the matter is exactly that; the device is not deleting backups but the real issue seems to be that I'm not able to locate them (probably not even see them).
Same problem here; different phone (Note 10) but same problem with MIUI12. Other files category increases by about 2GB/day, even while hardly using the phone. This issue has been reported all over the web, but Xiaomi seems reluctant to admit they have such a basic file operation issue:
Other Files Under Storage Space Keeps Increasing After MIUI 12 Update
To access other files under storage space, head over to settings>>my device>>storage. Compare your details with the pictures above and see if you're also affected.

Invalid - "Other files" filling up my phone very rapidly
In the past 2 months or so I have had this issues where the 64G of my xiaomi mi 8 is being bloated by "other files". They appear predominantly when I delete large video files, so I strongly suspect there is a problem in the MIUI 12 with deleting files properly. At some point my phone becomes 99%...

Hi there. I have the same issue since last month. I bought the phone last year on May and the problem just came last month. The "Other Files" increased by 3 - 4 GB per day without any reasons. After doing factory reset, my phone memory got full after 1 week (64GB). I went to Xiaomi Service Center. They format the memory and install older version of the OS. However, it didn't help. My phone memory got full after 2 weeks. I went back to the service center, and they had no idea too. Then they replaced the motherboard. Technically speaking, my phone is new, with the new IMEI number. But surprisingly, my memory got full again after 2 weeks! Fortunately, my phone is still under warranty. I insist to get new phone but the procedure is not that easy. I'm requested to go back to service center next week. Hopefully there will be a good news.
Thanks @pangayoman please let us know how you go!
Factory reset seems the only solution here too (Note 10 lite) but over time the other files still increase. Strangely enough all the cleaning and storage analyzer tools don't see the other files at all and can't remove any of it....
Did anyone try a custom rom, like crDroid? That may rule out hardware issues....
I haven't tried a custom ROM yet, as I never did it before, but I think it's time to try it now. Otherwise I have a brick as I can't use the apps I need even if I spend more time installing than using them.
Can someone help me?? Like CCleaner shows that my apps occupied 3+gb,but system shows that my apps occupied 8gb...how can I get access to system storage (apps & apps data)?? (like I can't even click it and find out what takes so much memory)

I have my system in a different language, so the translation might be inaccurate, but it should be something like this: settings--> about my phone --> tap on storage --> Tap on Apps & Data. That should do the trick. The problem discussed here is slightly different, though.
Install 12.0.3 indonesia stable . xiaomi solve this problem in this rom
