Samsung Galaxy S5 Review - Galaxy S 5 General

Hey Guys,
Here's my take on the Samsung Galaxy S5... spent close to 72 hours to get this done, hope someone finds it useful...
Thanks for your time and feedbacks welcome
Ash

Was waiting for a review from you man! :good:
Awesome review!
But I have to disagree with what you said about the Exynos not having any major changes. Most of the changes are under the hood as @AndreiLux said and it is still as powerful(if not, more powerful) than the Snapdragon 801 as seen from benchmarks. Only disappointing thing about the Exynos chipset is the lack of LTE.
And also, Samsung removed all the benchmark boosting code in the Kitkat update. So, the benchmark results will not be "fake".

Thanks buddy I'm gonna add it to the review thread!!!

I'm not a registered youtube user but I'll give you a thanks here, because the amount of work and dedication some of you are putting into your yt videos is simply amazing.
Overall a great video some things I wanted to add (tried the phone yesterday):
1. TouchWiz blazing fast ? Sadly that wasn't my experience for sure it's far from slow but to me it seemed like the microlags increased quite a bit
2. Exynos ..well personally I'd take 8 over 4 cores sadly not available in Austria
3. Performance: as a non handygamer you just have proven my deepest fears, 2 gig of RAM simply aren't enough for flawless multitasking. The Z 2 should handle that much better although maybe even 3 gigs aren't enough.
4. fully agree on the bloat thing, that's why root as always is a must for me.
5. thanks for the great review

[Q & A] Ask ask your questions here !!

Hi guys
I was planning to buy the Samsung Galaxy S Advance as my second phone, it has an dual core 1 Ghz ST-Ericsson U8500 CPU with a Mali 400 GPU from ARM with 768 MB of RAM. and other similar features like the S plus.
According to the stericsson website the U8500 chip supports 1080p video recording but on the gsmarena specs it shows 720p with 30fps (maybe someday could unlock the full hd feature )
The main reason i posted this thread was to ask about it's GPU performance, as it includes the same GPU from the S2.
Will the performance be the same as the S2 ? or somewhere around that ?
And what about the U8500's performance ?
Another Question
Are Dual cores really fast compared to a single core
I own a S plus which has a Qualcomm msm8255t 1.4 Ghz single core cpu, which i find quite fast, it runs CM9 very smoothly.
I'm also considering this phone, and I hope you don't mind I through in another question: is it true what they say that with this being "an upgrade to the Galaxy S" and only available on limited markets we don't have to expect much development and selection in custom ROMs?
I am considering either this, or a Motorola Atrix 4G and I really don't know what to choose...
I actually like it's design, it's somewhat like a mix between the S2 and Galaxy Nexus, more like a baby Nexus.
anyways this phone has great potential as it beats the galaxy R (see benchmarks at gsmarena)
I don't think that it'll get much attention by devs. It's not that the phone's slow, but there won't be as many users as other Galaxy S phones have. You can see what happened to S Plus: it's faster than the Galaxy S, but not even supported by Cyanogenmod, with a very small community. The simple reason why the Galaxy S has more users now than the advanced one will ever have, is that the S once was the best phone out and many people bought it. The Plus and Advanced aren't. They get 1/2 cores when already 2/4 are standard.
LOL i just bought the device it's real smooth was playing some hd games and the performance is really good, the mali 400mp is doing its job just fine and multitasking is pretty good
I don't know about Germany but this device seems to be getting quite popular here in India

A friend got it... but he's Android noob .
I just looked on amazon - for 40€ more you get the S2. IMO it would be the better choice. More RAM, faster, awesome cam. Why didn't you buy it?
I will rather buy S2. I learn my lesson with i9001.
In Croatia "S Advance" is on T-Mobile more than 200£ cheaper SII, therefor I don't see a reason not to buy it, except that it probably will not get much attention from developers.

there's quite a big difference in the price between the advance and the S2, so i chose the Advance over the S2. (and also i liked its nexus like curve, the curved display looks really cool)
Anyways the phone is performing well, for the first time i could play GTA 3 (v1.3) with full graphics without any lags.
and now have started enjoying gaming.
I don't regret buying this phone, maybe when samsung releases ics for the phone it will perform similar to the S2

Nah, if you get past 300€, 40€ aren't a big difference. With the S2, you can replace your cam with the phone, with Advanced you can't take usefull pics. And just look at the awesome dev support. I think Sammy only released the Advanced because of the big critic, that none of the Galaxy S devices gets ICS. Now they can say 'upgrade to advanced' and make money with their bad support. But in the end it's your decision .
I know S2 is a better device but i still liked the look of the Advance, and was quite curious about the new NovaThor chipset
and btw there ain't no news of ICS for the galaxy Advance (I'm starting to worry now )
The phone seems to have some very nice motion controls (like when you double tap on the top of the phone it activates voice search, and the tilt to zoom function)
I'm confused between s advanced and Xperia arc S (both of them at same price ) but i'm scared to get s advance duo to lake of support/deve so what do u think about that nail16??
Xperia Arc S has the same configuration as the galaxy s plus so it's a single core device and has a adreno 205 (the gpu kinda sucks)
I say go for the Advance don't worry about the dev support, it seems to be a powerful phone it will soon be recognized by the devs
Ihope so =D
Theres No XDA support for the phone. So its a big no actually !!
In india also its not that famous :O..!!
Great phone,
you can buy it closed eyes

Samsung Galaxy S5 Snapdragon vs. Exynos Antutu X test with video

Here you go, I made a quick video for Antutu X Benchmark between both devices ( Snap and Exynos )
Lets guess which device ( which CPU ) on left and right while watching this clip and then you have your answer.
Video was captured with an iphone 5 ( YEAH I know, Samsung is gonna be p*ssed LOL ).
Enjoy!
That answers my question somewhat, so the 5422 has a slight edge on the first benchmark, yet lost the second ,making it 1 to 1, but the s801 finished the test first on both testes.

Are all 8 cores running on the 5422 version?
Wow, you really have both version?
Please make full comparison especially speed/tw , battery and camera.

Interesting... in Barcelona Samsung announced that the 5422 will support Heterogeneous Multi Processing allowing all 8 cores to run if necessary. The Note 3 Neo's 5260 can run all 6, so the S5 5422 may need an update, or benchmark tools need it, what do you think, @AndreiLux?

I got a chance to played with it for half a day but its damn hot while running bench. not so sure if it ran with all eight cores at once. Gotta check again 2mo. But imo, the Exynos is very smooth. But the camera on Exynos version is not so good. Dont know why Even i took a few shots and compare with the LG G2, the G2 beats it with much better quality

Right now honestly HMP seems a bit far-fetched. Most app developers don't even use more than 1 thread for their apps. Waste of battery imo.

Thank you Andrei! So can it run all 8 cores right now, does it depend on Samsung or the apps?

The point of HMP is load balancing between the cores. It still has advantages even in low threaded apps. The cores are powered off when not doing anything.

It depends on nothing specifically. If load is sufficiently high and threaded it'll use all 8.
I think Antutu is finishing the tests slower than the Snapdragon because it's dispatching twice the threads and doing twice the work, it would score higher if it actually didn't do that.
And no I'm not getting it, the S5 will be outdated in a few months.

Depends on the thermal throttling settings between the two, Samsung changed the limits several times on both versions of the S4 so expect the same to happen here.

Unlike the previous Ex chips that did not make much of a difference, the 5433 is far superior over the 805, especially CPU calculations. The Ex chip would be great for emulators like higher end MAME games and PSP.

Manual brightess is 300nit as usual, 480 nit in auto-mode under sunlight with full white image displayed, about 700 nit with a tiny white image measured.

Yeah i can almost see the difference in performance between exynos and SD even in the reviews...if we can spot that in a review then in real life it ll be more obvious..

same here with gpu the exynos version has mali t760 wins and beats snapdragon andreno 450

But you are damned to run Touchwiz. We snapdragon guys are on CM12 and it's getting pretty damn stable already Needless to say it blows Touchwiz totally out of the water in terms of performance, fluidness and overal responsiveness. Ah and I noted 20%-30% faster NAND throughput times, not sure if that's due to Lollipop (ah yeah, forgot you guys are still waiting for Samsung to release lollipop, haha)
BTW, I didnt optimize anything at all, just benchmarked out of the box Touchwiz, as shipped. With tweaking I'm sure it's possible to squeeze out a bit more. I was just merely saying that the benchmark the OP referred to is completely wrong.
Ey, mine is bigger !!
But mine is thicker !!
By the end of the day few more or less frames per second won't make much difference but if you want enjoy Gear VR than only Snapdragon version is supported so far.

One thing to consider is that this article was released june 2014. This is way before it was released. In the article it state the snapdragon has a quad 2.5ghz processor but was reased with a 2.7ghz. If you want to know who's is bigger and who's is thicker you need to test them now and both plane stock roms out of the box.

It works Yeah I've read that a lot here "but I will lose the s-pen when flashing custom ROM". No you will not !! Not sure why people think that, maybe they think that because it's a samsung feature it's impossible to support on a non-samsung system ? Since Samsung is using the linux kernel, they are bound by law to release all drivers. So they did, including the s-pen, so it's supported out of the box on any custom ROM !
All you need to do is download the 'markers' app from the store and after you've installed it, you have an s-pen sketch board, and after that it just works on everything else too (on the CM12 interface etc) , including air support (no need to touch the display).
The only detail that I don't like too much is the pointer itself. On stock it's a small dot, via markers it's like a mouse pointer. However I read yesterday that people are working to change the pointer, it's possible via an overlay. But then again, it's not bothering me much anyway.

Motorola Moto G6 performance issues?

Hey all.
I'm new to Moto G6, it's going to be my 3rd Android device. And I'm about to buy it.
But in the forums, people complain about the lag in apps and software but reviews say the phone is very snappy and responsive.
What are your opinions on this? Is the phone performance good or...?
It's much better than other 4xx based Snapdragon processor. It's fast as HTC U11 Life

You make a good point about the Moto forums which brings me to comment on what you have read on reviews. If you mean reviews on various tech blogs, keep this in mind. Those are not always real world reviews. They are not loading the phone down with apps as they probably do with their personal devices. Also keep in mind that they may or may not be paid for the review. In either case if the manufacturer is giving them the device, even if they are not paying the reviewer, they risk being cut off from being gifted more devices.
I don't have the G6. I have the G6+ which I suspect you know has different hardware then the G6. So I can't actually give you an honest first hand review. However, for what it's worth, I have been posting in the G6 forum for months and have not noticed any complaints of this nature.
If you like custom roms, the G6 is not a good choice though!

Yes. And that is why i turned to the good old XDA for performance reviews. Running bechmarks repeatedly doesn't dertermine the performance of the device nor running all the apps alltogether and saying that device handles all the apps and the apps launch fast from the RAM doesn't mean the device is fast. Apps need to launched from a Cold boot, Scrolling jank, How the apps behave when we are using them, What network, The other factors that determine the performance all needs to be included in the review.
If it were me, I would use this device for a solid 2 weeks before even giving the first impressions. These phone and Tech blogs don't even use device for 4 whole days yet they publish the review. What's the point of a review if they need to publish the review first and before other tech blogs. They are mere First impressions for pete's sake.

I dont care about Custom ROMS, So no problem here :good:
I've had mine since June and it still seems to run well.
