Now that the AOSP/Google Camera has been launched on the play store, i thought it would be interesting start a thread to collect images and impressions of the Google Camera, particularly in contrast to the Touchwiz camera. The touchwiz camera and it's, i'll say, "pseudo-intelligent" mode picking has confused a lot of users early on, so this may be another option for some users. I have gone so far as to validate that all of the photo modes in the google camera work on my 900V.
here's a play store link to the google camera. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...utm_source=42matters.com&utm_medium=WidgetWeb
The focus mode w/ the google camera sucks. Having to move the camera and keep the subject centered has been a real challenge so far.
I do like swiping to the sides to bring up gallery and options. Slick.

That's just with that funky tilt-shift focus mode though right? I tried it on a beer bottle and it didn't really work...maybe on a larger subject it has potential.
Couple sample shots from me real quick....at least it's shooting at 16mp.

Yeah, which is weird because the shutter was actually 1/100th faster on the touchwiz pic. Everything else shows the same.

Really not impressed with the camera on my GS5 but it's miles above what I had.
And the out of focus gimmick is lame on all the camera phones(I'm going to assume the one on the M8 actually works) it took about 10 shots to get this one.

I'm seeing just the opposite... images taken in moderate light show more processing artifacts than with the google camera (no flash or HDR, all other settings the same). It's not a huge difference, but it's certainly noticeable.

This was taken with hdr camera+ in quite low light.
Was comparing different camera apps last night.
Unfortunately the stock camera app either blurred it out, or fired flash and I got a blue white glare.

Personally I think that in most cases HDR are a bit washed out.
HDR processing engine in XZ is not the best (I know what I am talking about, been doing photos for years ... with 60D, now with 7D over a year, processing with PS CS3, CS4 and now CS5).
What do you think guys ?
personally I think it's not post-processing the HDR properly, it's just saving the last exposure, (the stock camera takes 3 the same as the hdr+ app) then combines them.
You can see the different ones appear in the thumbnail preview in the stock camera app when you take a hdr photo, the last one is the one that shows up.
Must have a look at the logs, see if there's anything obvious.

I wouldnt fully agree that it shows last from the 3. If it was, buildings would be properly exposed and the sky much over exposed. Like you can see this is not the case as the sky is still properly exposed.
Where to find these logs ?

I've seen the sun yesterday. I know, shocking!
Ok guy's I wanted to start a poll regarding the camera quality since 4.4.2.
I love my nexus 5 but I found the camera when it was stock 4.4 was impressive even in low light with the flash, However because so many people were complaining about the speed of it taking shots (it didn't bother me as long as it took nice photo's) Now google have responded with 4.4.2 and speeded the camera shot process however the image quality has reduced by some margin even in well lit area's,
So basically this is a poll to gauge who wants to take better quality photo's or faster photo's
Personally I couldn't care less how long it took as long they were good quality photo's...
Makes me glad I got the phone about the same time 4.4.2 came out
Requesting new poll option: Use a different camera app and be able to do both. No need to be limited by the automatic settings.

I for one am not updating to 4.4.1, or 4.4.2. I have no complaints with the release software. Who gives a **** about how good the stock photos are. If you care even marginally about image quality then you should know how to properly edit a photo. Simple as that. I love this phone.
Day shots are as good as before, night shots are worse, more noise and it's just not impressive anymore. I'd take the slower shutter for night shots anytime, and keep the new behavior for daylight shots.

That's exactly my point, I was extremely happy with stock 4.4, Camera was fine and video's were great so I'm gauging who prefers quality over speed of shots.
Question ? When your in the market for a compact camera what is end users primary concern ? How good the images are ? Or how fast it take shots ? Exactly point proved and judging from the results of the poll so far looks like I'm not alone either.

Agreed, they boosted the ISO because they increase the shutter speed in low light thus images turns up pretty noisy. What's the point of having OIS when it can't use it? It's better to have slower shutter and low ISO to make the image sharper and less noise in dark environment, just make the OIS more aggressive, come on Google don't fail me now
I came from the HTC One and iPhone 5s. I dumped both for the N5 that I purchased used that was already updated to 4.4.2.
The noise level is way too high. Day or night. Focus issues are still present. What's worst is that I can never get a clean, clear shot. I don't even want to transfer the images taken from the N5 to the computer because I know it will be a lot worse than what I see on my phone.
I purchased Camera Awesome. Didn't do anything to help with the issue. Does anyone else have any suggestions as to a better app to use? Or a mod for a previous version?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
I prefer faster shots. With 4.4 I almost went nuts... especially in dark areas it was almost impossible to focus. So for me I accept the 5% worse quality and get 100% faster shots.
Very impressed with day shots, have yet to try a night shot, but I did notice the screen was much darker.

Whatever they did to the camera they need to revert it. All photos shouldn't look like they were taken with an ISO of 800.
EDIT: It's worse than I thought. A relatively bright photo = ISO 1336.
I prefer the quicker photo's. I don't need a camera to take pictures of my dinner or a flower. Anyone who has kids is definitley enjoying the update.
If you look through the picture thread here the majority of the pics are people's food. I don't really need to keep a picture journal of what I eat. lol

Are you using the drag to focus (or tap to focus for google camera)? although I've just tested mine and mine is focusing and refocusing between distance and very close automatically no problem.
I did read on another thread that it focuses using differences between shapes so focusing on a plain uniform surface won't be very reliable.
What do you intend for "close"?
I take some photos at 25, 20, 15, 10 and 5 cm
The best distance is 25cm. Under this distance it can't focus properly.

Depends, mine can focus clearly all the way to ~6cm from the subject but the way the phone focuses it requires a definite 'hard contrast area' to focus on, although in your examples you do seem to have that (assuming you're trying to focus on the corner of the object above), if you try to focus on an area without much 'change' in the surface it won't focus.
Could you share a pic with 6cm focus please?
I still sincerely hope they fix the camera in the upcoming update. The camera on the moto g is a major let down despite being an improvement over the previous generation in terms of resoultion.

I only said approx 6cm, if you see the actual focus is just past 6cm and from testing earlier it will reliably focus at 7cm providing the light is good. You need plenty of light and hard edges for it to focus properly and you have to put the auto/manual focus directly on the hard edge for it to focus.

I have the same problem............
Just got this for my wife to.replace her old iPhone 4S. So far she is very unimpressed by the camera quality and the lack of focus accross the room. As it shifts through focal lengths it can get a crisp pictire but autofocus never stops at the right spot.
*edit* just purchased Camera FV-5. Had to boost the contrast and saturation in the app, but focusing is way better.
I too have this problem, I sometimes need to quickly take pictures of a page in a book for a quote, and the camera simply won't focus on the text at all. The moto g turbo used to do a great job, I thought I was getting an upgrade, but the g 4 plus camera focus on close objects and text is horrendous. Do you think an update will fix it?

It doesn't have the Pixels amazing EIS so videos will be affected also. The 6Ps videos were horrible because it didn't have OIS.
Much prefer OIS but The lack of EIS on 4k video recording is a deal breaker for me, no stabilisation is horrible on any video recording.
Do you this this could be added later with a software update.?

OIS or EIS is mainly for video recording without it videos are horrible to watch back, there is NO excuse why EIS is available for 1080p but not 4k video recording.
Until I see the results myself, i.e. tested it in my hands, thats when I'll critique it correctly. Results speak for themselves as they say.

yes, hdr+ is giving me awesome photos.
sadly we need to edit media_profiles.xml to add profiles for slow-motion and HFR.

I will update as further messing with the camera that the night shots with flash on with the pixel are shockingly bad. The flash is not working correctly. Pictures are not being lit up enough. It's a dual tone flash on the Nokia but with pixel APK, it's not firing the brighter flash

Which is the best version of this app to run on Nokia 8?
I think the ones linked here will be good:

Filename MGCB_7.0H_C2API_Min_v.1.4.apk

This was a good post to get the history and to learn about the different versions.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/how-to/modded-google-camera-hdr-60fps-video-t3658552
I'd say start with the 3.8 (linked in post above, without any letter after it) version but 1.4-version will probably be fine as well.
Note to others downloading the file: The Android Download-app doesn't open APKs, you need to install a file manager app to open it.
So next question, which are the recommended settings in the app? In the 3.8 version there are tons of values you can select. HDR+ isn't enabled per default.
I tried on Nokia8 and I think no one notice that it has small color dots and line in every photo that process HDR at the bottom of picture. I tried every setting and still can't figure out how to remove. It's also appear in skip24ftlb's photo.
Seems ok the shots come out slightly better than nokia stock but the bottom of the photo has these blue and red bars (looks like some graph lines) on every photo that you point at a bright source of light and reduce the brightness on screen to absolute minimum. Happened on all photos that I took of the sunrise with heaps of bright orange clouds.
It stickout more when the bottom half of the photo is darker down the bottom.
Cheers

I am not sure which version it is there are too many digits in the file downloaded.
file name is gcam 4.4.012 blah blah blah and ends with v.1.1.apk so Is it 4.4 or 1.1. If it is 1.1 can you please direct me to 1.4
Thank you

I tested with 1.4, 1.5, 3.7, 3.8, 4.0 and all of it happens. So i think there are no other options to avoid this.
Can someone share some pictures?
There are a lot of versions of GCam modded.
On HTC U11 topic, there's a large thread where many users are debating which is the best.
Can someone take a look how does it gets on Nokia 8?
Mine still not here. Maybe on the end of the month.
