Getting back to Google - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

I installed the Google Now Launcher, works great. The Google Dialer, not so much - it force closes immediately. I figured this would happen but anyone care to explain or have an idea why it does this?
I really REALLY want this phone app back, I can deal with no root for now but I really want the layout like my S III had which was straight up CM11 with PA GApps.
I also want my lock screen back! I hate Samsungs stock lock screen. I tried Go locker and Kitkat locker with no success, both are terrible. I was hoping that the Google launcher would have the lock screen and I don't know why it doesn't really.
Any ideas anyone?

Slim ICS +Stock Launcher Widgets

I have Slim ICS installed on my phone and configurated it with (stock) Launcher. So Lightning Launcher is not activated.
If I want to add certain widgets like Apollo to my homescreen it fails. Message: Unfortunately Launcher has stopped.
Previous time this was not a problem so I know it is possible.
How should I operate?
Also OTA app is not working
Hi,
I don't use the stock launcher. I'm using Apex. Initially, I had a similar problem. I was able to fix it by going in the launcher settings - Advanced and enabling "Enable Root Helper". This allowed me to add widgets from drawer with root access.
So, perhaps you could try looking for a similar setting in the launcher you are using.
Or, try using Apex. I've been very happy with the free version.
To your other question about OTA. I find the Update Me app a bit inconsistent. Just now as I read you thread, starting the app, it appeared not to be working. About a minute later all menu items appeared. Ordinarily, I wouldn't have waited so long. There have been similar reports in the Slim thread. It is what it is, you'll just have to keep trying or not bother with OTA and download directly from slimroms and transfer the file(s) manually to your phone.
Edit: I just OTA'd, slim 4.2 and common. It appeared to be stuck before starting, like over a minute. Looks like patience is a virtue in the matter of Update Me and OTA.
Agreed, I think the problem with ota app is linked to it refreshing data each time you open it, it can be quite erratic, so above solution is best
I am sorry but the launcher is still not working well with widgets.
For the OTA app this could be a solution indeed

[Q] Boot loop/nova launcher ?

I've had Nova launcher installed since it was on sale in the Play Store and it's always worked fine until this week. I saw an article on an app called Flip launcher and wanted to try it. I downloaded it and another similar app (swipepad) and started playing with them. Everything worked fine for a few hours, then my phone randomly rebooted and went into boot loop.
I went into safe mode and un-installed Nova, Flip Launcher, and Swipe Pad and rebooted. Phone worked after that so I re-installed only Nova but my phone keeps randomly going into a boot loop now even after deleting both of the other apps.
Can anyone give me some feedback into this and why it may be happening or how to stop it?
Also, when you install Nova you have the choice to set it as your default launcher. Does this mean that the stock launcher still runs in the background? If so, does that hog much memory?
thanks!
might be something wrong with nova launcher:

Oops. I forgot I already asked. I was sleep deprived at the time. Have you heard of anything being wrong with Nova? I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem.
only as far as my post in there, I'm using apex launcher now so i can't tell you anymore than that

So that's all the replays I'm going to get
Well I did some looking around & found that the name of the APK for Blinkfeed is "launcherUpdateScreen.apk" that made me fear full about removing it.
So I ask again can I remove it???
I'm running HTC Sense UI everything is stock I have just unlocked & rooted the phone
Oh more ? I have can I delete gmail.apk I don't want it & want to know if I remove it will it F up my phone???
Is there a list of what's safe to remove & what's not safe to remove???
any time I tried to disable or remove Blinkfeed from my m7 the launcher would stop working. good thing before I tried disabling it I did a backup. (Dont bother trying to disable) the best that can be done to is it go into your settings and remove blinkfeed from the page itself.
Thank you

thank you & I have already done just that.
so from here on I will give up on removing it
but do you update Blinkfeed or see any point in updating it when you see Blinkfeed come up in the play store?
also got any input on gmail.apk?
If you don't use Gmail then I'm sure you could remove it. Although I would freeze it first to see if it causes any problems. It may mess with hangouts or other Google Apps.
Use a third party launcher...Nova,Apex,ADW,Next,ect.

This is exactly what I was going to say. Honestly, there's nothing good about the Sense launcher except for blink feed, so if you're want to "desensitize" your phone, you can do that via Ti. I would freeze HTC Weather, blinkfeed, and service pack. I did that once, and I didn't see any negative effects. Once you're confident with that, you can defrost then delete those apps via Ti. Make a backup if your setup is valuable.
Oh yeah, you'll lose all lock screen shortcuts if you delete blink feed, so keep that in mind.
Thanks for all the replies everyone

I'm a upper level android user & that's only because I'm a hardcore Linux user
but changing things like the launcher & other things beyond that is too advanced for me.
I have fears of bricking my phone, so I keep everything stock & just root/unlock/s-off etc...
but stay stock.
As for the Blinkfeed I will just leave that turned off & alone
but even with it off should I update Blinkfeed?? there is an update for it in the play store.
As for the gmail I will try & freeze it & see what happens.
the Google user I have for my phone, I don't use the gmail.
the user I made is just for my phone, the only thing I use it for to just to access the play store & that is only to get free apps.
I have another gmail user that I use for email but I don't trust checking email over a phone so I don't. (I work in computer & network security so I'm always paranoid about security)

For future reference, root/S-OFF/unlock is a much higher percentage for bricking your phone than installing a launcher APK, which has about a zero percent chance.
So you should feel safe installing Nova or any other launcher that you want if that will help your situation...
well I have confidence in doing that because I have done it soo many time & I understand all of it but there are areas of Android I just have not had the time to learn.
with a third-party launcher does the old one keep running in the background? & can the old be remove all the way?

A third party launcher is just another app. When you first install it, it asks you which launcher you want to use by default, or you can select either launcher every time you press the home key.
If you ever want to you can remove the new launcher via uninstalling the app and it just defaults back to the old one, exactly as you had it.
Just think of it as a normal app, it has about as much chance of bricking your phone as Candy Crush.

Widget in Recent Apps

I'm on stock rooted and I'm getting my Google Voice widget showing at the top of my recent apps screen. What is going on? Anyone seen this before? I've done a couple reboots and it's still there. I can always flash something, but just curious what everyone thought.
Try booting into safe mode. Then open recents, then reboot
Sounds like Google Voice invaded your Google Search somehow.
If you flash a custom ROM, you can hide that widget

I'm pretty sure this is on purpose. One of the focus points of 5.0 was better multitasking and I think that's the to help with it because when you click on a link it takes you out of that page

I flashed liquid smooth and it went back to the Google search widget. I couldn't for the life of me get the Google voice widget out of there. Thanks fellas!

Installing & using Samsung apps on Pixel 4 XL?

Call me crazy but I went to APK mirror and downloaded Samsung's corresponding apps for the phone messaging and their camera app oh and also the internet browser and the internet browser is the only one that works. The camera one won't install the phone and messaging app installed but the messaging app force closes right away and the phone app looks to be launching it but then it just goes back to the home screen. I am rooted that helps and makes any difference. Does anyone know how I can do this?
Thank you very much. Alsoeveryone that loves customer recoveries and custom ROMs and tweaking out your phone just hang in there little bit longer because I have a feeling that the TWRP team is going to figure it out any day now and it'll be nice to be able to back up my ROM and try something new or a different kernel without having to do everything in fast boot.
