I'm familiar with the linux filesystem, but what i'm not sure is how to access or view this file system. Say I wanted to place a file in /etc/system, what program can i use to do that? When connected to my PC via USB, all I get is the SD card with download..data...titanium backup..gps...etc
Cheers

First you need to root your phone. As the term implies it gives you root access.
Then use an app like root explorer to get into root directories, mount them as rw, then do as you will.

Hello,
for me sounds like you need root access to your system to see this folders and a file explorer with root too like root explorer....but is not for free. I already didn´t found a free option.
Is only a idea...I didn´t try self
Edit: I was too slow :-D

My phone is rooted with Darky's 9.5. I would know how to do this in linux, mounting...chmod for permissions, something like that...are you saying an app like root explorer lets me access /etc, /mnt, and so on? Are there free alternatives?
If you want you can try this both....but the feedback is very mixed..some like some hate
Android Mate Free
Super Manager
If you try please gimme a feedback
So I often watch TV show episodes on the websites for CBS, ABC, and NBC and just today for the first time I tried doing so while tethering to my phone using the Mobile AP. When I clicked on an episode, however, I received an error telling me, "This video is either unavailable or is being blocked by an ad blocker installed in your browser." The thing is, I definitely don't have an ad blocker installed in my browser; and, when I disconnected from my phone and instead connected directly to my ethernet, the video worked fine right away. I tried it for shows on NBC.com as well as ABC.com and received similar errors all pointing towards Ad Blocking software. Has anyone else ever experienced this or does anyone know the relation between tethering to Mobile AP and an Ad Blocker detection? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have two laptops and only one ethernet hookup, so I would like to be able to have good internet connected to both at once.
No one huh???

Install AdFree Android from the market, then choose revert.
do you have ad-blocking built into your rom? delete (or rename) the "hosts" file in system/etc

Ohhh wow I didn't even realize that ad-blocking came built into ROMs. I just quickly checked in /system/etc and did see the hosts file, opened it up and checked out the text. I tried renaming it but it was read-only, and root explorer wouldn't let me remount as r/w. I guess I'll look into it more tomorrow. But I would imagine I wouldn't want to just straight delete it right, as whatever ads it was blocking would no longer be blocked? I could just rename it any time I encountered errors while tethering to my laptop?
Does reverting through Adfree simply delete that hosts file?

if root explorer wouldnt let you mount you might have lost root somehow. re root.

I don't think I did. I just updated the su binary and when I reopened root explorer, superuser asked me if I wanted to allow root access to root explorer. I've read that before somewhere of people having trouble remounting within the /system folder. It let's me remount on folders outside /system, just not inside it. I still haven't figured it out. I suppose I could use terminal emulator right?

you were exactly right TR. i renamed the hosts file and re-tethered and i no longer received any errors about ad-blocking software. not to say the video is actually working too well tho - just keeps freezing. i guess streaming tv episodes while tethered to your phone isn't the best idea. anyway, thanks man!
I'm trying to connect my KFHD to my home network so I can access files on my NAS remotely. According to my little device I have to download an app that is compatible with my network - which would be either PPTP or OpenVPN. So far the apps I've tried don't work. Has anyone had any luck connecting to a network via VPN?
I have the same problem , if someone could help I'd really appreciate it.
Have you guys checked around the original kf forums. Even though we are different devices they software is pretty similair.

To the op are you talking about accessing files from a remote location?

Basically, yes.
So far all the references to VPNs in the original Kindle Fire forums are for subscription based VPN services. I don't want to use someone else's VPN service to get around country restrictions (which is what it seems most people are trying to do). I'm trying to access my own VPN server so I can access my own files on my NAS and to secure my internet sessions if I'm at an unsecured hotspot.
It seems that Amazon has disabled VPN support entirely (kernel level?) so I can't get PPTP to work. OpenVPN would work if I could find a TUN module that works with the device (have tried TUN.KO installer with no luck) and would have to install BusyBox. I don't want to mess around too much since we don't have recovery in place and I don't have my factory cable yet to try to do a restore.
I can get SSH to work but that doesn't protect web browsing. The only way I can find to use SSH as a VPN is by installing OpenSSH. I guess I'll try that as soon as I get my Raspberry Pi up and running - I'm right now using my NAS as a VPN server (not too thrilled with that scenario).
If I find a solution I'll post it here.
same needs here? any news with vpn client for android? only thing I found is https://play.google.com/store/apps/...=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5kb2VudGVyLm9uZXZwbiJd but " This app doesn't yet work Android 4.0"
Now that I have resurrected by machine I was able to test Feat VPN (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5mZWF0dnBuLmFwcC5saXRlIl0.). It's a client for OpenVPN . I was able to successfully connect to my network remotely. The free version posted above will only work for 1 hour per day. There is a paid version that removes the 1 hour restriction.

I use es file explorer to access files on my computer via the wireless network. Is that what you mean?

Feat VPN is now free (without the 1 hour restriction) if you download it from their website. Go to "featvpn dot com" (I can't post URLs) and get the version for Android 4.x
Can't you use FTP mode in ES File Explorer and connect to your ip address?
I don't want to run FTP unless absolutely necessary. Plus, VPN access allows secure browsing at open hotspots and gets me around Amazon's "only in the US" prime video viewing when I'm out of the states.
I have OpenVPN working fine. No need for anything special. You just need to root and install busybox installer (advanced install with symlinks). Then install and run OpenVPN installer.
No packets with OpenVPN
I managed to get OpenVPN installed on my rooted Kindle Fire HD and can setup a connection to a AlwaysVPN server.
But I can't get any packets routed - so no traffic at all....
It's not a DNS problem - I have the same problem if I use bare IP-adresses. And the FixHTC option in OpenVPN doesn't help either.
Can you share your OpenVPN script file ?

I got it working now. I just needed so set symlinks for ifconfig and route to the busybox:
mount -o remount, rw /system
ln -s /system/xbin/busybox /system/bin/ifconfig
ln -s /system/xbin/busybox /system/bin/route
mount -o remount, ro /system
Hey,
So after updating the Xperia TX to JB, i have noticed that there is an issue with wifi connexions, meaning that the phone will no longer connect to some access points of software access points (connectify, virtual router, etc...). After entering WPA key, it just says connecting then goes back to previous state.
I fiddled a bit with this and finally compared wlan .ini files from ICS and JB.
If you are having the same problem, a small modification to the .ini file might solve the problem...well in my case it did.
Please note that you need root access to modify this file.
1) Mount system folder as writable using your file manager or root explorer
2) Navigate to /system/etc/firmware/wlan/prima
3) Make a backup of WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini
4) Open WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini and look for g11dSupportEnabled=1
5) Modify it to g11dSupportEnabled=0 and save the file
6) Power off your wifi and Power on again
7) Forget the SSID you've had issues to connect to and try to connect again
and you should be good to go.
To understand the g11dSupport property please refer to here - from wikipedia
if the above did not work, there is another property which has changed:
gEnableFWRssiMonitoring=1 in JB was gEnableFWRssiMonitoring=0 in ICS
You may wanna try that.
works on tx build .67
before i changed this damn 1 to 0 i couldn't connect to my wireless modem !
but now its ok.
tnx:good:
great it worked!! pressed thanks..
i tried with ex file manager, it couldnt save the script.. then used root browser.. did the trick..

Make sure you have root access and that system is mounted as R/W
If you have root, you can usually remount in your file manager application (File Manager or ES explorer). Check in settings

There must be something wrong with your RW access if you cannot modify the file.
Try this:
1) Copy the said file to your SD card
2) Connect your phone as Mass Storage
3) Using and Editing software like Notepad ++ open the file and make the changes and save the file
4) Go back to your File Manager and rename the existing file (the one in the root folder)
5) Copy the modified file from your SD card to the correct location
If copying or renaming the file fails, means you dont have Read/Write access to the root folder.
I am also using xperia tx and although my wifi doesnt disconnect , it really makes my phone lag a lot while I am using wifi...should I also try this method ?

If you have root access you may try it. Though i don't know if it will solve it. The wifi problems are very eratic. Most of the issues depend on the access points being used and their settings.
Try it and keep us posted.
Don't forget to make a backup of the file before modifying.

I just rooted my phone today and after mounting the system to r/w on root explorer, my phone restarts suddenly.
Search for and flash the reboot fix. It's a known issue

Hello everyone!
I have a GT-I9000 and I need root access from Windows Explorer, over USB connection.
How achieve that?
I can do that via wifi using for example a FTP server app on my phone http://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=ftp&fdid=be.ppareit.swiftp_free
Don't know if you can configure it to work via USB.
I think you can mount the /system partition as mass storage in a custom recovery, but I have never tested it before. Why do you want root access through explorer anyway?
