Battery Problem, Bug/Sollution? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i encoutered a strange situation.
I flashed/updated the phone right after the [NUT] 's version of the last kk update , since then i always thought that my battery life decreased, i had 1 day and a half at max with the same use & apps as on 4.2, on wich i had even 3 days of battery power.
So, yesterday I placed the phone on the charhing dock, removed a couple of time because of phone calls, and after 2~ hours the phone said that the battery was 100% charged.
I removed the phone, made a call and right after i hit end call, battery was showing 63% left, i repeat this was minutes right after the phone was fully charged from the dock.
I thought that was an error, checked battery statistics, and it showed a drop from 100 to 63 in 2 minutes.
As i thought that it was a problem with the dock charger, i connected the phone to a usb charger, orange light was on, and after a few minutes the phone would stop charghing and the light will turn off. I tried this step a few times, and always the phone will not charge more than 63% just as if the kernel would think the battery is already full.
I turned the phone off, connected the phone to a wall charger, and the charging started from half to 100% in 40 minutes more or so.
From yesterday i have 20 hours on battery and 70% still left :| this with 27minutes of voice talk and 1 hour& 37 minutes of screen on (this includes some gps navigation app ~ 20 minutes ON)
I think that my situation clearly states that there might be a battery controlling problem that it might show 100% while the battery is still not charged completly.
The next step i will take is to let the phone completly die, and then charge it on the wall charger (turned off) untill the battery is completly charged and after that i'l power it up.
Did anyone else encountered this issue/situation?

This happens when doing dirty flashes.. Try with doing an full wipe before flashing any major update!

yes it's locked, but i'm asking this because even on an official ota that would fail/or something else would happen in the process the same thing would result.
I also saw that between reboots the XZDual recovery shows different battery percents, wich is not normal...
Again this is purrely for the talk of it... and maybe someone else that has the problem would see that it is best to let the phone die and then charge it full turned off. (As i did not do ) / WIPE DATA after an update/or flash.
I think this is the single method to reset the battery stats without any knowledge....
Because if this thing didn't happen to me i would let it be and thought that is a bug with the kk firmware ))

Why not backup the TA-partition and unlock BL, and get root access much easier by flashing custom kernel & SuperSU package by Chainfire?
Wiping battery stats have nothing to do with battery reading and current level.. It's a myth thas has been even debunked by Google to be pure placebo effect.

I did have a lot of android phones, and as I stated in another topic this is the first one that i'm afraid to tinkle with (because of bricking topic & so) also I know that if I unlock the BL i loose some features of the phone (mostly in camera), i also did backup TA the first day i rooted.
I'm not new to this stuff, i've built kernels/roms and stuff but I'm new to the phone and I take things slowly...I'm also hesitating because of the warranty, the phone is almost 2 months old...
And i can also state that this is the first android phone that I simply am confortable with the stock software, and i did not encountered huge bugs like before.
The only feature that I miss vs the other phones on the same 'stage' is the double tap to unlock. If a kernel with that feature appears and it is stable i will unlock immediatly.

Do you mean "2 Tap to Wake Up" the phone instead of using Power button? It' s already ported this feature in latest custom kernels but to do that you have to unlock it and get rooted.

My z1 is not rooted still it ' sometimes ' does not charge
The LED is orange and a charging sign is shown still the battery remains at the same percent please need help should i buy a new chaeger or is it 4.4 kk problem..??

[Q] How can I tell what's eating my battery?

About a week ago, I started noticing that my phone battery gets very hot and the battery drains quickly when the phone is NOT in use (Screen off, sitting on my desk). Full charge to 0% in 4 four hours or so, without being stressed.
When I try to charge it from the supplied wall charger, it doesn't get past 87% charged before the battery temp creeps into the 40s and it starts draining (while still plugged in).
I assume it's a faulty battery, only because I haven't downloaded anything new. The only change I made was updating Viber. I removed that app from my phone but it's still dropping like a fly.
I've done a factory reset twice, no change.
Rebooted the phone many times, no change.
Tried different cables and different chargers (PC, Old X10), no change.
Now, since I can't replace the battery in this phone, I'm hoping there's a software method to see what might be eating the battery.
Note : My LT30a .195 can't be rooted, and the bootloader can't be unlocked. Also, I don't know how to take screenshots.
Anyone have an suggestions ??
In Settings-Battery you should be able to see what processes are using it.
If you want to monitor cpu load in real time, then you'll need some app, like OS Monitor to see load per process, or PowerTutor for logging cumulative consumption.
I bought this phone several days before. Yesterday got root, installed cwm recovery and installed jb 4.1.2 deoxed stock Rom. I noticed that my phone can't sleep. Totally! Take a look on screenshots. I thought that may be bcoz of some apps so I wiped everything (int and ext sdcard too), but it makes no sense

Turning off your auto sync when not needed should do the trick.
Something's wrong there. I've got too much battery consumption by Android System too, but that is ridiculous.
¿Have you tried BetterBatteryStats to see what's keeping it on?.

AudioOut_2 is related to any games or apps related to sound or which "produce" sound..are you on stock rom and stock kernel?
try to exit any music player app after listening or exit the game properly after playing..sometimes keystrock sound causes it..
do one thing...reboot it and keep it idle for an hr or so..and while rebooting make sure your phone is not in silent or vibrate mode..and after an ar check the batterystats and let us know!
And do check all the columns including partial wakelocks and try to find which process used more time or percentage...

I charged battery fully, made a reboot and left device for a night. Wifi was on. I lost 10% per 9 hrs.
Phone haven't slept at all
Is that all bcoz of gtalk?

Dude your phone is just fine...10% down in 9 hrs with wifi on is too good...everything looks normal..gtalk seems to be waking up the phone to update the online offline lists.in general syncing...thats all..if it was 10% down in 1 hr then it wouldve been a problem...the data looks just fine..and trust me your phone is entering sleep mode..or else it wouldve showed different result..to confirm that install cpuspy..it will say what all frequency are being used and how much phone is sleeping and all...
so just chill..
BTW I logged out from gtalk yesterday evening so I can't understand why it's trying to connect

Poor battery life on a new phone

Ok, so I had a problem with my old Moto G 2014 and bought a new one. I've been using it for two days and I'm yet to get the battery life I used to have on my old one. With Kit Kat I used to get 4,5 hours of screentime. When updated to Lollipop I went to 5,5-6 hours of screentime. With the new one I'm getting 4,2 hours of screentime tops. The phone came with Lollipop already so I was hoping to get my old battery life (or better, as it is a new phone).
"Android Services" is having an abnormal use of battery (as seen on screenshots) and it is actually eating more battery than screen on some point which was NEVER the case before.
As for screentime, right now I'm with 75% battery and 1,1 hour of screentime. Usually on the old phone I'd get 1,1 hour of screentime with something like 87%.
The battery consumption overnight is also abnormal. I went to sleep with 85% and the phone in airplane mode and woke up to 80% - 7 hours without use nor signal searching (I know the phone uses battery overnight but 5% in airplane mode is too much for my experience). The charts didn't show any sign the phone was awoke on this time.
I've already frozen Motorola apps, did all the recommended settings - that I had on my old phone - (location with low battery use, turned off printing services (and frozen them too), wi-fi automatic searching off, etc), I am yet to use 3G/mobile network (so far I have only used wi-fi), the screen brightness is close to the minimal (automatic brightness is off), etc, so I don't know what the problem is (and I don't want to factory reset my phone now and lose all the app settings I just redid).
I want to know if you guys have any idea of something I can do or understand the "Included Packages" used by Android System (which obviously is eating the battery, I just want to find out why and fix it).
Thank you!
Fixed it. The solution was clearing the cache of the apps listed on the Android System battery stats + doing a cache wipe on Recovery Mode.
Talked too soon, here I am with only 16% left and only 4h10m of screentime. Can anyone help?

Can you post your latest screenshots please? Also, go to Settings -> Battery and tap the battery graph and post a screenshot of that as well...
So I did a factory reset, reinstalled the apps, redid all the settings and did a battery calibration. Yet, I'm with 17% and only 4 hours of screentime. It's very frustrating. It's two hours less than what I used to get. And the worst is that I can't just turn the phone back and say that the battery isn't as good as my old phone one. It is either a Motorola/Android setting or I was just given a bad battery. Again, very frustrating.
I haven't been using FM Radio, DropBox (wth this NativeDropbox agent), so I don't understand these on Android System, and I'm only using wi-fi.
Any help?
I don't know what's causing it.. I had 30% left with 5h+ of screen on time yesterday, the battery life's fantastic. Without using battery saver mode aswell, I only have the brightness set to min most of the time (bright enough inside) & location off.
In my old one I'd get to 6 hours with similar settings (location was turned on though, with low battery use, and it didn't bother). I don't want to have to turn my phone into a stick to get reasonable battery life.
I'm thinking about reflashing the original rom (since it doesn't void the warranty). It will be the second reset I'll give my phone in less than a week. Do you guys think it can do something useful or will I just waste my time?

I prefer KitKat too. If you like Lollipop as a whole and the only thing bothering you is that battery drain, I suggest you get a Custom ROM which is based on Lollipop (I'm using this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/development/pf-cm-t3127531) and it's working quite fine.
If you want a Custom ROM based on KitKat, go for MicroKat ROM.
Btw, turn off auto brightness for your phone and drag the brightness slider to the minimum (or wherever you're comfortable keeping it) because detecting the surrounding light and adjusting the brightness consumes more battery. Let us know what decision you make and how the results turn out to be for you...
I've been doing some stressing tests. With location services turned off I've been able to get 5.5 hours of screentime (this was the only thing left to do on the battery saving checklist). 5.5 hours with 1% left of battery. This is still less than I used to get on my old Moto G 2014, on which I once got 6.15 hours with 3 or 4%. However, this must be some firmware bug or setting, IDK (and no one here seems to know nor care), so I guess I will only wait on a update maybe. I've tried everything but flashing a different rom. Flash a stock rom is still an option but IDK if I want to reset and do all again with the risk of it doesn't work.
Right now I just put my phone to charge with 13% and less than 4.4 hours of screentime. I might have to settle for this, but comparing to what I had it is very frustrating.
I'll update if I "fix" it or if I decide to flash the stock rom (I'm not up for flashing a modified rom because I don't want to unlock the bootloader and lose the warranty).
Actually the stock rom I mean is the firmware. Sorry about this mess up. And I'm about to do this as my last attempt of having my 6-hour-screentime-batery-life.

Flash stock firmware? Aren't you already on stock?
I understand not wanting to install a custom ROM but you can try performing a factory reset on your phone. In order to back up your apps to SD Card, root the phone (It can be rooted without unlocking the bootloader or losing your warranty) and back up your apps using Titanium Backup.

Solved
Ok, I think I got it.
My Moto G XT1069 came from factory with Lollipop, so I didn't have to update OTA or anything. What I did was: I flashed via fastboot the Lollipop stock rom/firmware (one I easily got on Google, that I came to know is the OTA update from 4.4.4 > 5.0.2, as the "System version" is different of the one I used to have). This solved my battery problem. No bootload unlock needed, so no warranty void.
I guess some bug with Moto G's factory Lollipop is causing poor battery life, so for anyone's experiencing similar problems, this is what got mine fixed.

Just flash the stock firmware and kernel, and see if it solves the problem. If not then you have a dead battery on your hands.
I also have the same problem, it also seems to happen at 30 percent. I'm pretty sure we need to change our battery

ok thank you. just one more question just to be safe, should i just download the firmware from sammobile and flash via odin in download mode right?
and another fellow here advised me to calibrate my battery to check if its hardware or software. he told me to charge to 100% and delete this file data/ system / and delete BatteryStats.bin use to 0% and then charge 100%. should i do it before going stock or not?
had the same issue a few days back (f2 stock rom and kernel), battery dropped from 17% to 0 within a few seconds.
but this occured only once, the next cycle was ok, so i guess it was a calibration issue!

Easiest to try battery calibration first. If that doesn't work after a couple of cycles then just flash the stock rom from Sammobile using Odin.

There are 3 possible reasons this happens - broken phone, broken battery or software problem.
I think the first one is unlikely so you need to figure out which of the last 2 is.
Make a back up of your current rom and install an official TW software. If this still doesnt fix your problem, its most likely the battery. A new genuine battery is around 20$.
PS - i think that the battery stats bin file is automatically deleted once you fully charge the battery anyway but you can still try it altough i doubt it will fix it.

same problem here
And here.
This is typical of a dead battery. Your best bet is to buy a new one.
Less than a year is short but not unheard of. Overheating (especially when 100% full), deep discharge, very intensive use (especially with quick charging) and manufacturing defects all can kill a battery.
I'm on CM12.1 with this problem. I've tried battery calibration and tried a new battery but its still apparent.
Will be trying a factory reset as my last resort.
This is happening to 2 phones in my household it started after the upgrade to 5.0.1 one note is Tmobile the other sprint....highly doubt we both developed battery problems RIGHT after we both ota upgraded.
Same here at ~13%.
I do always either fast charge or QI charge.
So far I've tried:
- Battery calibration
- Bought new battery
- Factory reset
Still happens!!
Maybe I'll try TW flash or modem change
Weird, I have this exact same problem as the original post. I'm running BOC5 on the 9105. It's a sporadic problem only occurring on occasion

Z1 Battery Problems

Hi, I have a Sony Xperia Z1 running cm12 nightlies. I've been getting this problem where the phone shows 40% battery but turns off at this and on restart shows 1%
This was okay, however, recently it has started turning off at 70%
I don't really want to replace the battery, as my warrenty is voided (isn't it) and it's not the easiest thing to disassemble.
Thanks.

Don't waste your time on flashing and calibrating. You have classic symptoms of a dying battery. Soon, the phone would shut down at 90%, because your battery capacity is 6-7 times less. Try to run a youtube video and your phone will die in less than 20 min.
If you read this and general threads, you would have found similar complains. You need to replace your battery.

How easy would you say taking apart and replacing the battery in a Z1 is?
Edit: If it's the battery why does it suddenly cut off instead of quickly decreasing.

Because battery is measured by voltage and when voltage goes down to a certain level, kernel shuts down the phone. If your normal battery has 20 cells, yours has only 3 left and voltage goes down rapidly under load, because the other cells are dead. Even if the battery has 1 cell left, when it is charged, the phone will show 100%, while there is a real capacity to hold just a few percents.
Watch youtube videos on how to change the battery. You may or may not break the back pannel (I did). So, get a replacement back glass too.

I had same issue with my z1 since last 4-5 weeks. Thinking that battery is dying I changed it yesterday with a brand new sony battery. Now even after changing my battery, the problem persists. Phone switches off suddenly with 45-60% charge left.
I am on PAC Roam running 5.1.1 . Prior to this I have tried MX rom, Ressurection remix and few other ROMs running 5.1.1 however the same problem wa there as well.
I think it is not only to do with battery but with something else. Please help

You probably have a random reboot issue (thanks to some recent dumb kernel/rom improvements), as opposed to switch off. Look for what your battery shows after reboot: if it is 1%, it is battery related and you got a bad replacement. If it is close to the value before reboot, it is your rom/kernel. There is no third option. And by the way, battery drain has nothing to do with bad battery. Most drains are caused by Gapps and social apps. Also, if you install a new rom or battery, you have to give it a few charging cycles.

Sometimes (like just 10 mins back) my phone goes off and when I reboot it, it comeback with same battery percentage but most times it needs charging to reboot and when it comes back alive, battery stat is 1%
Same was the case with my last battery. Now I am even more confused as to what is the exact cause Should I lock my bootloader and flash Stock 5.1.1. ftf and see if problem still persists?

If your phone boots on its own after switching off, then it is not the battery issue. CM roms are becoming worse and worse for several reasons: too many devices; bad sources from google and incompetent software guys (both at CM and Google). I don't like apple and their products, but when one entity controls hardware and software, you will have fewer bugs. Google pays their engineers for introducing more and more ad related things into Android, as opposed to making Android a full blown operating system.
Go to stock and see how long your new battery lasts: if it dies after 20 min of youtube, you have a bad battery. Period. If it is not, then find a custom rom that does not have random reboots, which unfortunately there is only 2 or 3...
For any measurements to be valid, you need to give your battery at least one cycle on a current rom (from 100% to 15-16%).
P.S. You may have both issues. If you paid $10-12 for a new battery, then most likely, you have a Chinese fake that only looks like real Sony...

I bought it in Rs 1500 (approx $30) from authorized sony service centre which also gave me a warranty of 6 months. Worst case I can return it to them but just want to be sure before I try and do that.
My phone switched on once after going off and it was with same battery stat (last instance). there have been couple of times when I could turn my phone on but it showed only 1 or 2% battery.

Just do what I recommended in the previous post: go to stock, fully charge and see how long the battery lasts on youtube: in 20 minutes, you should lose no more than 13-15% on a new battery, as opposed to go to zero. Some Z1 batteries have a problem: Mine died about 9 months ago. My old Xperia ION (which is a 2012 phone) battery is still going strong (lasts for at least 2 days on Jeallybean).

I just recharge it to 100% and ran YouTube for 35 mins and from 100 it went to 93%..!!
Only 7 battery loss for 30mins YouTube on 240p and full volume
I hope the issue was there for first few cycles. In case if still persists, will try and flash FTF tomorrow and see what happens:fingers-crossed:

That means your battery is fine and you have random reboots related to the rom you use. Here are custom roms that have no reboots: slimrom; tesla, DU and Jaguar. The last 3 are mine. LOL. I am not promoting my roms, don't need to (just look at the number of downloads, especially Jaguar)... In case of Jaguar, you have to flash November 1 kernel on top of the latest release. It is in November that they introduced changes that cause reboots...
Haha..
I know you don't have to plug-in your roms. I guess I will hold it for a day to see how my phone behaves. Major battery drain is when I play Clash of Clans. I am on CoC to check endurance. If not, them will move to Jaguar with Nov kernel on top.
I have realized that it's somewhere in November since there random reboots and battery issues started

I flashed latest Jaguar with Nov 1 kernel and c6902 modem (Version 4). Have also flashed 5.1 gapps (Micro version) and restored all my apps. have created Zip from titanium backup.
Phone still went off from around 75% battery. when restarted again, it came back with 45% battery, just to die within 30 seconds :crying:

pathetic battery

I am on Repulsa rom with mad max kernel. And the battery life is pathetic. From 100 to 20% there is no problem but as soon the battery goes below 20% it will literally go to zero in 10 sec and will shut down. It happens 9/10 times.. As soon as it goes below 20% it will shut down in few seconds.. This is not rom or kernel issue because this has happened with different rom and Kernel too.. If anyone can help it would be of great help..
Battery is badDegraded. common thing with phone batteries. Gotta get the battery replaced

degraded battery is usually covered but you tripped knox when you installed twrp. so you may not be eligible for warranty

I dont have that much knowledge but i am unrooted and happened to me serveral times as my battery shut downs in 13 percents. I looked for a solution and my issue resolved. Hope if it can help you
Maybe its calibration issue
Maybe your phone thinks 20% is 0
Try using fully discharge your battery until it shutsdown then go to recovery mode and waste the juice until it turn off and dont even boot into recovery. Then charge full with power off and again discharge to 0. Again to 100 and see if problem solves.
If not then maybe issue is with battery
I'm getting 5-7 hours here depending on the usage but to be sure go back to stock room for 5 days and check the SOT BY THE WAY I'm on Lightrom with the mad Max kernel
My phone used to be like this... so annoyed.
I tried everything but no result: using battery calibrate apps or methods, flashing stock rom, reinstalling TWRP,...
I am quite sure when your phone is at 20%-, you can't see battery % in TWRP mode :V.
I think the cause is TWRP ( data can't mount )
Here is what HAPPENED to my phone )
I flashed ECHO rom and my phone got bootloop..."Only official binaries ...."
Fine....too easy to fix... I flashed my stock rom and ta da... My phone's battery was Fixed :V
So ...you can consider bootloop your phone to fix the problem ))) Then wait 7 days without restarting your phone... reinstall TWRP ( "NOUGAT" or "OREO" ). And when you download dm-ver... zip to install TWRP, look carefully for LATEST version "LATEST". And dont update your TWRP or use themes for TWRP (Old is gold, simple is perfection :v , fuctional is too enough)
GOOD LUCK

Why wait 7 days with no reboot? Not needed if it's to make the OEM toggle visible...just wait 7 days or use the date-change workaround. Reboots affect the uptime timer but not the server-side OEM unlock timer.

Happened to me lately on stock, never rooted. Try turning off quick charge and use normal method instead for a few cycles. Maybe test on stock firmware just to be safe. If no improvement it might be a degrading battery.
I am thinking to factory reset the phone to see if the problem is solved.. N try the solutions offered ie calibration, quick charge off

Sounds good, just be careful with calibration...fully charging or discharging the battery reduces it's overall lifespan. Don't do it too often.
I did factory reset including internal storage wipe and calibration Bt still the problem exists.. Now the battery will go down to 15 then directly 14,12,10,5 in seconds even if I connect charger at 15 it will go down till 3%..

Hmm that's frustrating. Not sure if there might be another cause or fix, otherwise might be the battery itself.

Yeah, it can be possible to degrade the battery that quickly.
It usually happens when you let your phone go under 20% frequently or let it die completely before charging it again.
I usually do the lowest 25-30% and the 80+% charge daily, then finally use it all the way to 20% before going to sleep, put it on a slow charger, and by next morning its at 100% without keeping it charged 100% all night (which can also degrade the battery, just a lot slower than discharging it completely.)
I have had my phone a week before it came out and my battery is awesome. It lasts me all day everyday. Best phone I have ever had.
