[Q] S-off versus SU - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I have a new HTC one M8 (Bell Canada carrier), rooted with HTCDev, I also have SuperUser status and I installed TWRP recovery.
The question is: should I bother to get S-Off?
Another question, unrelated to S-Off vs SU:
As I did not flash a new Rom, I beleive that I still could do the OTA sys updates when they become available,
would doing an OTA system update remove my SU privileges and re-lock the bootloader?
Thanks,
Fizou, in Toronto

1) This is the M7 forum, not M8. In the future, pls post there. There's a forum specifically for the M8
2) S-OFF nd SU are TWO ABSOLUTELY DIFFERENT THINGS ALTOGETHER. Pls research more
Coming to your question, you cannot get OTA updates if you have a custom recovery, which im sure you would be having. If you want OTA updates, you need to flash stock recovery. And, OTA updates wont affect ur root privilege(SU) or the bootloader status

[Q] HTC one - rooting without opting out of OTA

as far as I'm aware, the only way to root the HTC one is via unlocking the bootloader, which then prevents the phone from receiving OTA updates, is it possible to root the HTC one without opting out of these updates?
Thanks, LordTumnas
(if there is a similar thread to this, i apologize, i was unable to find it)
I'm not sure about all versions, but I have the Developer Edition that came unlocked and I get OTA updates. I think it is more about CID, MID, and stock OS & recovery.

im not sure what version i have... its through Telstra in australia (32GB silver)...
A good place to start is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2228274
The key is to make sure you are confident you can get back to stock recovery and perhaps locked bootloader (depending on model) before you take the plunge. That way you can get back to a fully stock device.

Use revone to s-off and unlock then install cwm recovery, install supersu from recovery, install stock recovery. With supersu you can temp unroot for otas.

This doesn't answer your question, but usually somebody posts a zip for a stock, rooted ROM within a couple days of OTA.
Just root, unlock, and install a custom rom already.

HBOOT 1.,57, S-ON and 4.4 FW (Rogers Unlocked)

Hey guys,
So here's my problem,
I bought an HTC one, Rogers, and unlocked it. As soon as I unlocked it, I went and downloaded the HTC all in one toolkit.
I followed the steps, unlocked my bootloader, installed TWRP, but i can't get S-OFF
Is S-OFF required to install custom firmware like Slim rom?
I got so frustrated at one point that adb pushed a nandroid 4.3 rogers fw and just stuck with that.
But for some reason I want 4.4. I don't know why, but i can't install custom firmware, and OTA won't work EVEN when i use the RUU utility, and the respective firmware for my device (and correlative stock HTC recovery for rogers).
What gives?
What would be your next step for someone a bit more seasoned than myself?

You can not install OTA updates with custom recovery like TWRP. OTA's require stock recovery, stock rom and some /preload/files. When you unlocked your bootloader you might have wiped out some of those preload files. I would not use the toolkit, you can use the fastboot & adb commands without it. Download this and follow the OP.
Also for S-OFF, your hboot dictates which program to use; revone (1.44), rumrunner (1.54), firewater (1.5X), sunshine when all else fails.

[q] how to update new htc one

I just got a good deal on att m7. I was able to unlock the bootloader from htcdev, rooted it, installed TWRP 2.8 and S-Off. HBOOT version 1.55. I did not flash a custom ROM (afraid it's not compatible even though I want to try MaximusHD). I am still on Android 4.3 and I believe the update to 4.4.2 is available. I haven't tried OTA using an ATT sim, if I do and the update is available, will I lose root? is there a way to update without losing root? sorry, newbie.

You can't use ota update with a custom recovery and you'll loose root after an ota update which is not really an issue. Root can be achieved in less than 2 minutes.
since your phone is s-off you should convert it to a Dev edition using the 6.07.1540.2 RUU to get rid of at&t software and then you'll be able to use ota updates even if you're not on at&t network.

[Q] New m9

Just got a new m9 been away from htc and rooting for a long time. just upgraded from my trusty galaxy s3. Is there any thing i should be aware of before unlocking boot loader and rooting. the phone is bone stock on 5.0.2 Should i let it update before unlocking boot loader and rooting. To my understanding i should unlock boot loader install twrp and don't mount the system before making a back up. Then install supersu and root or use sunshine to get root and do both.

Welcome back to HTC
It really depends on what you plan to do with your M9.
If you plan on using custom roms then yes unlock and install TWRP. Root is not required to flash roms.
Sunshine does not root or unlock but removes secure write (S-Off) which allows you to install different firmware's etc.
With S-on you can only move forward with firmware's. Lots of people complain about the 25.00, But its well worth it.
If you are not concerned about the cost, then unlock, twrp, flash superSu, and install sunshine and S-off then your free to do anything.
backup if you like but there is a thread with stock backups etc...
hope this helps
My main concern was if i want to use the phone first with out unlocking and it receives the tmobile update that i can unlock and root later.

Yes you can still unlock and root and S-off on the current OS 5.1 - 2.11.531.19, but I would do it before MM comes out for this device.
will do viperone had issues on initial firmware so i flashed the latest ruu, sunshine is next. thanks for the advice.
Hi everyone,
I need some help if you may please. I bought an HTC One M9 phone and for a while it's been telling me to update to the newest android version. However, this was impossible because even when I downloaded de update from TMobile, when restarting, TWRP would kick in and wouldn't let me go through the whole setup. So, I got to some tutorials and I found some guidance but it's all so confusing and I've gotten to a point where I have no idea what to do next.
Phone is from:
-TMobile
What I did:
-Got rid of TWRP
-Got it back to unroot
Phone status as of now:
It works fine, but it's still not updated.
When going into the HTC Download mode screen, i get the following info:
-UNLOCKED
-htc_himaul PVT S-ON
-OS-1.32.531.24
-Warning: Security checking failed NOT_FIND_SMARTIO
FILE /mnt/media_rw/ext_sd/0PJAIMG.zip
File NOT FOUND
ADB is not reading my device when in download mode, I was trying to install stock recovery by following a tutorian in android soul: how to install stock recovery on htc one m9 (sorry but the forum won't let me post the link.
What do I need to do? There are so many tutorials out ther with so many different instructions that I'm totally confused now as to what to install or not to install . I'd like to install the Developer version but if I have to deal with the Tmobile one, that's ok.
Thanks in advance

You say you got rid of twrp and tried to flash the stock recovery but adb is not working, so what recovery is currently on the phone?
I think the simplest solution would be to run the latest RUU from your sd card since you have adb issues (most likely a driver).
This will bring you to current stock 2.11.531.19. This will wipe the device and you must use a 4-32GB sd card.
Place it on the root of the sd card and boot into download mode, vol up to update and let it run.
you can get the RUU here

Wait. I just picked up an M9 myself, and my current plan is to wait until the official T-Mobile Marshmallow OTA is released before I unlock bootloader and S-OFF. My logic being that I could create then create a backup point in TWRP if I can't find a custom ROM that suitably handles T-Mobile specific features (WiFi calling, etc.) and just restore to the stock T-Mobile image.
Are you saying that updating OTA to Marshmallow could limit my ability to use Sunshine for S-OFF?
I suppose I could just S-OFF now and then RUU back to Stock T-Mobile Marshmallow once released?
edit: I'm already on Lollipop 5.1 on my M9. Am I already ****-out-of-luck for Sunshine?

Sunshine will work on the current version. We never know what will come when a new OTA's come out.
An OTA wont relock the bootloader or return it to S-ON. That is why I would recommend to do the S-off before an OTA.

Makes sense.
But won't unlocking the bootloader, flashing TWRP, then going S-OFF with Sunshine make it so that the newest OTA won't be accepted as an actual over-the-air update due to the altered filesystem? I know that I can still RUU, but will RUU not revert my S-OFF back to S-ON and re-lock the bootloader? Or are those things unaffected by RUU, even as an executable RUU?

The RUU will not relock bootloader or rewrite S-On. To accept OTA, you need to have stock unmodified device.
You could run the RUU again or just unroot and flash stock recovery. The OTA will not wipe the device but the RUU will.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for this! Im having trouble with my computer and have been looking for a ruu zip all day lol. Will give this a shot on my TMOUS S-Off M9 tomorrow so I can jump to my next device.

[Q] Question about updating

I have a s-off stock rooted M8 that is running the same version of kitkat that it had when I got it in 2014. I've been thinking about updating it to marshmallow but I have a few questions first. If I'm reading things correctly I can upgrade through the ruu off of HTCs website and I'll keep s-off but I'll lose root and the bootloader will be relocked.. Am I reading that right? If that'ss the case, since I'm s-off is there a way to reinstall twrp and flash supersu without using the unlocking tool on the dev website? And yes, I know I can flash a custom rom that's already rooted but I happen to like the htc stock software.
