Yes, unlock the bootloader and root.

My apologies, just realized you wrote NON rooted. Only way is to root, that I know of. You have the Dev Edition... you're good!

Without rooting, you can't modify /system or things under it.
If you have the Dev Edition, you can unlock your bootloader, without voiding the warranty, by requesting the code from Moto and easily root.
I have major battery issues that I was trying to figure out but I guess I will root and flash a custom rom. Where do you put the ROM since there is no external SD? Sorry. First time with a phone with no SD card

It's a strange feeling, isn't it?
Nonetheless, you can navigate to any arbitrary location on your built-in storage from within TWRP. I think I dumped it into whatever directory popped up when I connected to my PC as I was copying files over.

So upon a wipe in twrp before flashing a ROM this data will not be wiped?

I installed Eclipse. Don't wipe any sections you don't need to (I did and got into trouble). Wipe Data and do a factory reset. I chose to wipe more and had to adb the .zip down again.
I believe that means the data you have stored on the simulated sdcard directory doesn't get wiped with a wipe of "data".
That was my question. Stuff in the 0 folder won't be affected by a wipe

I don't have my phone in front of me right now, but whatever the default wipe is in TWRP (I can't remember if they call 'factory reset' or just 'wipe data') will leave the 0 folder untouched, yes.
Doing a format of /data is what you definitely never want to do as that will wipe your 'internal storage' (i.e. 0 folder)

Installing a custom ROM will do nothing if you install the same apps. There are plenty of apps and methods to determine the cause of your battery issues.
What have you done so far in and attempt to diagnose the cause?

Hi,
I have purchased a used Nexus One running stock 2.3.3 (with locked bootloader) and I am wondering how I am going to wipe it as if it were a brand new install (no residual settings, apps, accounts etc)?
I have done a bit of research and found that the recovery allows you to wipe data, is this what I would do?
Thanks,
menu/settings/privacy/factory data reset

Okay I'll try that. Thanks! How does this compare to the recovery 'wipe'?
if you're not rooted then this is your only option.it works well. to do a recovery wipe then you will need root and a custom recovery installed.
I thought it was the same thing? You can wipe in stock recovery...can't you?

I have rooted and cycled through a few custom roms. I have been on cm10.1 since early december and feel like i have lots of my apps in 2 or 3 different places on the memory. How do I know what is current and what is old unused info. I would be willing to do a fun system reset if i knew it would get rid of all the extra junk i have know but even when i have done that in the past it seems like there is still stuff i installed in the memory

You can factory reset somewhere in the settings menu, or if you have installed cwn you can delete everything within that and install a new rom via odin.
Sent from my GT-P7310 using xda app-developers app
To get rid of everything, you'll have to format you internal sd card and do a factory reset. Then flash the stock rom with Odin. What recovery are you using?

I am using clockworkmod. I have only used odin when i rooted.

Depends on what you mean by not messing anything up. If you want your phone to be like new and you're willing to odin or recovery a new Rom, then yes. If you want existing stuff to run correctly, then no

You could format /system, format /sdcard, do a system wipe, wipe dalvik cache and then flash your rom from with the zip with sideload (on ADB), assuming you have all your personal files and apps backed up.

I would've suggested trying to copy the backup you see in root browser to the external sd, you mentioned you installed to stock slot and wiped and every now and then ss does that, sometimes it erases your internal sd and maybe what you see in root browser are the "corpse" of the backup you made. Try to get an ex sd will save you a lot of headache in the future.
I have a xt1053 bootloader unlocked and rooted with towelroot with Stock Recovery. Can I factory reset safely? Thank you in advance.
If your bootloader is unlocked, there is no need to use TowelRoot, PIE, or TowelPIE root. Just flash TWRP recovery, and root.
But yes, you can safely factory reset your phone if you have stock recovery already on it.
If you are using TWRP, CWM, or other custom recovery, it is suggeted you boot into the custom recovery to "Wipe" from there, rather than using the phone's menu option for Factory Reset
@KidJoe so regardless of root status it is safe? Phew because if it wasn't I was just going to flash twrp and start flashing away. But I wasn't quite ready to start flashing roms. I just barely got around to unlocking the bootloader

Because of how TowelRoot and PIE work, yes, its safe. Their changes are lost at power off/on anyway. A factory reset would then clear away any files they might leave on /data or such.
If you were trying to "undo" SlapMyMoto/MotoWpNoMo, then I'd suggest flashing stock rom (with data wipe) in addition to factory reset, then flash TWRP and root.
@KidJoe Before unlocking BL the towelroot would be lost on reboot. Since unlocking the BL root sticks on reboot.

If that is true, then I would definitely flash the stock SBF for the Android/ROM version on your phone to completely remove it.
I don't know anyone really using Towel or PIE with an unlocked bootloader (write protect disabled), and I don't know enough about what Towel does to say if what is left over might get in the way... so to be safe... re-flash your phone. BUT be careful to use only the rom version already on your phone, and do NOT DOWNGRADE.
@KidJoe that would be this for XT1053 Dev edition correct?

As long as you have 4.4.3 on your phone now, sure.
GO to App Drawer -> Settings -> About Phone. the SYSTEM VERSION should match the description of the file you download from http://sbf.droid-developers.org/
so if your system version is 212.44.21.ghost.xxxx then that is the right file
Yup. So I just put this in the folder where my sdk is right?

Option 3 and Option 5 are the most often recommended. However, in your case, Option 2 might be enough.

OK let me run this by you. I'm at work and having my phone in this state of disarray is driving me crazy. If were to do a factory reset right now and something went wrong would I still be able to flash stock img? And worst case scenario I could send my phone to Motorola since my warranty is not voided?

How is your phone in a state of disarray? Unlocked, running PIE should be fine. Are you experiencing some problem?
If you factory reset and you get into troubles, its not going to brick your phone to the point where you have to send it in for warranty.
If you have mFastboot, the Android SDK/PlatformTools/ADB, and the right drivers on your PC, you could flash just system.img in a matter of minutes. A complete flash of all parts in the SBF zip file (one operation at a time) can be flashed via mfastboot in less than 15 minutes.
If you want to wait until you get home, you can use RSDLite which is a little easier to flash (it does all parts, one at a time) for you. No typing.
Just in case anyone is on the same boat. All I did was unroot in SuperSU and did a factory reset. No issues.

OK so I flashed CM12 and it encrypted my device again. I attempted to flash Pure Shamu and realized It would not run once it asked for a password during the boot process because encryption was active. Here's the main question If I install a ROM that requires encryption to be off Like Pure Shamu, could I format my data partition after flashing the ROM so it could boot properly??
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
You can unencrypted by wiping data (and storage) if your ROM / kernel doesn't enforce encryption. This will mean losing all your /decade data though
wiping data/storage won't unencrypt if you are using an unecrypted kernel. formatting data will do it though.

Agreed, by default in TWRP formats when wiping. But if you have set the "use RM -Rf instead of format" option, you'll need to unset it or use the format options.
Yea basically, I'm going to install a ROM that uses a unencrypted kernel, then format my user data before I boot the ROM, should do the trick right ? I'm also using TWRP recovery. Ive been flashing ROMS since my gnex, but this encryption stuff has made it a pain .
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
I haven't set anything other than what is set by default in TWRP. So I it should properly format the partition and allow a ROM with a unencrypted kernel to boot up right?

flash the rom/kernel/gapps/su first. because after formatting your data, you will lose all your storage.
Yes for sure, My process would be to wipe factory reset, install unencrypted Kernel/ROM, install gapps, install SU then format user data, then boot ROM . one last question, when should I be unmounting the storage ?

Just leave it encrypted, you won't notice the difference
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
As I mentioned above I was previously unencrypted and I can tell a major difference. This may be a matter of opinion, but I prefer to be unencrypted.
