[Q] Already rooted, what to do with Kitkat update notification? - Verizon LG G2

I am already rooted with xposed installed on Verizon and got the notification for the Kitkat OTA update -- which thread do I follow to safely take the OTA KitKat update? Thanks.

You can just try to take it as long as you have stock recovery installed (TWRP/CWM/PhilZ will cause a soft-brick situation), but depending on what Xposed modules you use and the changes made it could likely fail.
The safest and best way would be to factory restore the firmware via this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960, then take the OTA to 12B, followed by the OTA to 24A. The whole process is pretty painless, I did it going from an old CarbonROM build to the latest stock KitKat in about an hour and a half or so.

To add, you can re-root with ioroot25 and if you need a recovery for any reason, use AutoRec to install the latest TWRP. You need to jump through a few hoops to install recovery on KK and it does them for you. If you plan on staying on the stock rom, I would leave the stock recovery.

In my opinion, ioroot25 only does a partial root, there is BusyBox installed with SuperSU... I would also recommend doing a manual BusyBox install (Play Store has several free installers) for a "full" root install.

I forgot about that, I just used the app store BusyBox installer and it worked great.

[Q] How to upgrade to latest OTA. Please help!

So I've been searching through the forums for last several hours trying to figure out the best solution to my needs with relatively little luck. I'm currently running Safe Strap 1.07 on Android 2.3.4. Ultimately, I'd like to be running latest version of safe strap (3.11) along with the latest OTA on my unsafe system.
When I boot to the unsafe system it lets me download the OTA, but attempting to install the OTA always fails. Do I have have to completely reset my phone to factory via RSDLite or is there another way?
Your help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks

What version of software do you currently have? The OTA isn't supposed to push until tomorrow(04/15).
If you have any stock apps frozen you'll need to thaw them out. If you've deleted them you'll need to do a FXZ to get back to stock.
You won't get the OTA to JB unless you are on ICS. Google "House of Bionic" for the best support to get you where you want to be.
Tapatalking .246 Bionic
I just updated my unsafe system to 5.9.905. How do i go about getting it to the latest version?
Its been awhile but if memory serves that's the last update before you go to ICS then JB. Are you rooted? Have you tried downloading the update yet? What have you tried etc?

Elaborating on geekabilly's post...
Go to unsafe side, and uninstall ss from within ss app. Then uninstall app.
Use Samurai's HOB to get to ICS, and obtain root.
Update SU binaries
Backup root with VOODOO OTA Rootkeeper and Temp Unroot.
Go into "system settings" -> "about phone" - > check for updates.
If the update is available, let it update your phone, then use voodoo to hopefully restore root.
I haven't taken the OTA, as I am very happy on CM 10.1, and have no interest in being stuck on stock. So I don't know if you can keep root, but if you want to get JB, and try to keep root, IMO this is your best bet.

Worked!
This worked like a charm. My phone is currently on JB and rooted! Note, if it's not letting you get the OTA, just download it from somewhere else and place it in your SDCard. Then boot into stock recovery (volume up and down, select recovery, and hit volume up and down together again), then select update.zip and find your update.
Now I only have 1 more question...when I FXZ'd I forgot to uninstall safestrap from within the app. I believe this isn't a big deal since FXZ wipes everything. However, I am worried that this may cause issues when installing safestrap again.
Also, I only had safestrap 1.07 before I did this all. Does anyone know if a roms I've backed up with safestrap 1.07 will still be flashable in safestrap 3.11? I just really want to avoid bricking my phone because if I have to FXZ again I will loose root.
Thanks!

Open the safestrap app select uninstall recovery, reboot phone. That should do the trick.

The post by herrsmoothe.
The short version:
Use "House of Bionic" (requires 3 large files on PC and USB cord) to update your GB to ICS (should not lose any data if you do it right)
Root
install Voodoo's Root Keeper
When ready, do the OTA JB update
Then swap the file back to keep the root (see the above instructions)
Voila, rooted JB OTA.

Questions regarding rooting

I am currently using my unrooted Moto X with US Cellular. I was holding off on rooting until 4.4 hit but it seems that that might not be until next week given the holiday. I wanted to go ahead and root on 4.2.2 but want to make sure I do it correctly.
Do I need to unroot before taking the OTA when it comes or do I lose root when I take the OTA?
Also, I am not very experienced with Xposed Modules. Which ones work for 4.4 and which ones should I avoid after the update (for now)?
You can not take the ota if you have root. Root breaks the recovery and if you try and take the ota you will bootloop infinitely until you /fastboot erase cache
When 4.4 is available you need to follow the slapmymoto instructions (if you want root) or rsdlite back to 4.2.2 ota without root and take the ota.
As far as modules go with 4.4 gravity box works, motoxsposed didn't... Just make sure you get the beta xsposed framework installed and install it in recovery mode... Took me a few tries to get it to stick.
I know devs are working on upgrading their modules to work with 4.4, so if you have favorites, keep tabs on their updates.
AT&T Moto X rocking rooted 4.4

So I can go ahead and root now on 4.2.2, RSDLite back to stock when 4.4 OTA arrives, and take the OTA then root 4.4? I just want to make sure I get this right. Sorry for the noobness. I came from a S3 and it was light-years easier (one click root etc) and never had to do all the technical stuff. I'm sure this locked bootloader situation causes some headaches for devs.
I hope by the time US Cellular gets 4.4 OTA most of the 4.4 Xposed stuff will be working. At least Gravity Box works as well as Greenify... those are the two main ones I wanted to have access to.
Thanks again for the hand holding...

If you have rooted 24A with a stock recovery, you can take the OTA and retain root..
Ok so I figured I'd ask here instead of making a new thread since it's sort of relevant. Hope not to thread jack. I have a vs980 rooted on 24a with stock rom and twrp. My phone tried to update to 25b yesterday and I canceled it by switching from WiFi to 4g. 2 questions I have are can I take the update and stay the same or not yet since I have twrp? And 2 it started downloading automatically, if I can't take the update is there a way to keep it from downloading again? Thanks in advance.

1) It won't install without the factory recovery.
2) You have to remove/disable/freeze the updater app to stop it from prompting you. (I don't remember the exact name of it)
So there really isn't any harm in letting it download since it won't install without factory recovery? I'll check the apps I have frozen again I thought I froze it, but maybe not. Thanks. Do you know if it's simply called system updates?
Software Update is the app name people are freezing using Titanium, don't know what the .apk is, I have a debloated rom currently. You should be able to find and rename the .apk for Software Update to stop it.
I've been using ultimate backup lite and I have a system update app I could freeze just wanted to make sure it was the right one. Tried to post a picture, but I don't have enough seniority.
is ioroot still the best rooting tool?
Also when I take 25 will I have to reinstall twrp?

Help: Temp Unroot for OTA

Accidentally rooted my new RMA phone before I installed the 5.0 update that needed to be installed. How do I temp unroot so that I can install the update. I tried disabling Superuser to no avail. Every time I try installing the OTA I get an error saying system must be remounted or something.

no such thing as temp unroot.
1. you can flash the factory img, which is already the latest, then reroot.
2. you can flash any of the aosp roms, which are all the latest, in the android and original development sections, and not worry about an ota, ever.

Gotcha, I seem to remember being able to temporarily unroot back in the day.
You have to flash the stock factory image to unroot. If you do, you might as well just flash the stock factory image with the LRX21O update included, at https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Edit: Sorry I just realized someone else replied while i was typing.

Got it. That must have been my confusion. Flashed the factory image.
You're right
Right within the SuperSU app, if you go into settings, and scroll all the way down you can go into the option for "Full Unroot." You can also use Wugfresh toolkit to unroot, this will be "permanent" but as soon as you flash 5.01 you can reroot using either adb/fastboot (fastboot boot root.img) or using chainfire auto root or wugfresh.
I used fastboot to flash system then the OTA worked few days later rerooted.
The full unroot method via SuperSU app did not allow the OTA to take.

root

hi,
I would love to root my sm-g800f.
Which guide should I follow?
Thanks
What ROM? You can try flashing the correct CF Auto Root for your phone model and Android version using Odin if it using the latest Lollipop.

I have to look, so, for 'CF Auto Root' for G800FXXU1BPC3 Lollipop MR1 and
Odin.
Odin goes on PC and
CF Auto Root goes on device.
Am I right?
Both files go on PC, you used Odin to flash CF Auto Root into mobile. Seek for the files in the official page:
https://autoroot.chainfire.eu/
There are many videos on YouTube about it as most Samsung phones are rooted this way. Just make sure you use the correct file for your phone (G800F).
Backup everything you can first in case something goes wrong you may need to wipe mobile data and reflash stock ROM.
The other option is to use Odin to flash TWRP and then flash SuperSU zip from Chainfire. First, TWRP goes on PC then SuperSU Zip on phone, that you flash using TWRP. I am sure there are tutorials here about it, just pick TWRP for G800F, SuperSU is universal but some version may be needed according to your Android version. Can't help more because I have G800H and not rooted as Marshmallow was released for it and it has all I need. Good luck.

first way, I think, should be more simple.
How silly, I would root to change fonts on device.
And of course to free space, delete junkie and have control of my device.
Marshmallow is going to make me regret rooting?
You can change fonts using atock, no root needed. Also use Debloater to disable junk, no root needed either.
You can't use OTA to upgrade to MM when it arrives as it usually won't install or bootloops, so you will need to flash MM to go back to stock and upgrade then root again. Flashfire from Chainfire would be able to install OTAKU and keep root, but support to S5 mini is unkonwm, and no reports of success as far as I know.
Last but not least, flashing anything other than stock ROM through Odin will trip a Knox security counter and you'll lose warranty.
