IR blaster not flush? - Sprint HTC One (M8)

Got the m8 yesterday, loving it so far. Only problem I've noticed that on the left side of the phone, the black strip of plastic that holds the IR blaster is not completely flush to the rest of the phone, but I can push down on it to make it flush. Has anyone experienced the same problem?

It must be, since my case covers everything on that side of the phone except the power button, and the TV app works just fine.

Mine has slight raising on each side, but not much, and can't be pressed really. Just took it as how it was. Pretty sure it's not in the power button, more the ir can go through the plastic in most cases just fine

IR doesn't work like that, though. It requires a direct line of sight otherwise, it won't work. It's not an X-Ray or anything like a radio frequency such as Bluetooth.
From what I've read, I forget where exactly, the IR blaster is inside the power button on the left side of it when you have the screen facing you.

Yea you're totally right, don't kno how I forgot about that minor fact haha. On that note, ir clearly does not work when you cover the power button with your hand leaving the rest of the top uncovered. Reeeally makes the plastic beam on top of phone seem sillier than before.... Not sure Wtf the point is now

Volume button, soft keys and camera?

Hey there. I bought this phone today and I love it. However, I have a couple of couple gripes with it, but am not entirely sure whether it's just with my phone or the Incredible S in general.
First off, the volume buttons appears to be flimsy. I mean, yes, it's very thin and I'm not totally used to it yet, but I've noticed you can moved it from side to side slightly. This is the same for the power button, only not as noticeable.
Secondly, the soft keys. I get that they have an LCD display to make the buttons rotate, but on the search key it seems a lot brighter and a bit blurry, and I'm able to see the rotated magnifying glass underneath the non-rotated button. It's not as bright as the 'standard' non-rotated button, but it is noticeable. When I rotate the phone and the buttons rotate I'm unable to see the non-rotated magnifying glass. This is also the same, though not as bad for the back button.
And finally, the camera. I'm don't know whether this is a software/app/wifi issue, but I tested out Tango and Fring using the front facing camera and the back camera, and called my friend. He has an iPhone 4 and he came through clear. I, on the other hand (according to him at least) came through blocky and 'stuttery', with lots of pauses. Fring was worse, as the sound wasn't good for either of us, but the video seemed poor on my end.
So yeah, are my complaints common to all Incredible S'? If so, then I won't be too bothered, but I'm kinda worrying a bit because I bought the last IS in the shop, and when the salesman opened up the box to show me the phone, it didn't have any of the stickers on, and the screen had fingermarks on. He said that it was brand new, but they had used it to show another customer. I got home and tried turning it on, and there was no charge left in the battery. I looked in the box and all the chargers etc were unopened, though.
So yeah, what do you think?

Yes it is normal for the volume rocker to rock in all directions however don't let it fool you it is very sturdy and longer lasting than the power button. Never had an issue with the volume button however the power button will require more pressure to push over time.
As for the soft keys they do blur out and it all depends what angle your viewing them from.
The. Camera on. The front of the. IncS is a piece of crap only at 1mp, I'm not sure. What the iphones resolution is but I can guarantee that it's high seeing as they advertise video calls.

Another thing I've just noticed; again, am wondering whether this is same for everyone or just me (after the whole no stickers on the phone thing with fingerprints on the screen), but the micro USB port is kinda loose. If you tap it with your smallest finger, or if the charger is in it and move it slightly, the USB port moves.
Sorry for all the questions, I'm just a bit concerned if I've paid a a fair amount of money for a 'new' phone, when it's not and there's things wrong with it.
Thanks.
Everything seems pretty normal. Bearing in mind it is not a closed case like the iphone series, therefore you have to expect movement with parts of the phone.

My phone. Came the same way dude and yes the usb port moves on all of them it adds a bit of flexibility so it's not as easy to damage.
There is nothing to worry about. There was no plastic on mine and there was finger prints on it. The sales people generally boot them up once to avoid a waiting period when setting up your phone for the first time. They boot them up than shut them down so they can boot up fast using fast boot. The less time waiting for the phones the more time spent selling phones.

Oh okay dude! Thanks for the replies. I think I look for faults when they're not there lol.
So yeah cheers for clearing that up.

Rear glass creaking near top of device

I made this comment in the impressions thread but am trying to bring more light to it...
Put your phone face down, rub your thumb on the upper half of the phone, does it creak at the top? Its almost like the rear glass wasn't put on properly on my device - it creaks like plastic. I'm really surprised by this since most reviews say the thing is completely creak free. And yes its somewhat annoying because I can hear the creaking more and more when I am just handling the phone....
Thanks
Edit - made a video.... now that its happening more often it seems to be due to the plastic/rubber trim (which goes around the phone) not fitting properly, its flexing between the front and rear glass. BLah, I wish I had a bumper to see if that would minimize the issue. Its very noticable now. I added a 2nd video on youtube.

Hope people will be able to answer this if the phone creaks at all I don't think I'll get it

No creaking at all from my device. The power button is a little wiggly tho...not as solid as the volume rocker which is kind of annoying, but not a deal breaker or anything.

Stand on your head and rub the left corner counter clockwise.... Do you hear that noise? Come on guys.... really?
But to answer your question no mine does not creak perhaps you should return if you rub the back of it a lot.
Nope, no sort of creaking with mine in any form, and the buttons are all very firmly in place. The whole device feels extremely sturdy and well built.

You're an idiot - I started the thread to get real comments...
As my original post says, it occurs in regular situations when handling the phone. There is a creak on upper half of the rear or top of the device. It's annoying to spend any substantial amount on a device and have it creaking when new. I'll try to make a video later.
The buttons are fine on mine though - no issues there.

I mistakenly thanked your post but that I feel the opposite.
We are on XDA and on the Nexus 4 forum, it isn't like the OP is making a huge deal out of it. He is just wondering if any other people have been experiencing the same issue.
People post on these device-specific forums to discuss about the particular device, people are well aware that there are things in life outside of smartphones without you having to point it out.
it is completely solid, power button doesnt wiggle, there is a bit of a rattle when tapping the top but thats the camera lens I assume (only rattles when tapping near the camera)
Yeah I don't think it should be creaking at all, especially since the back is glass and non-removable. As you said, it probably wasn't put on right. I would wait a couple of weeks until this whole order fiasco is fixed before calling about doing a warranty exchange.

It creaks under real world situations if I grip the phone on both sides to turn on power it will flex and creak. If I grip with my index finger on top of the phone and fingers on both sides on the top, it creaks.

No creak, wobbliness, dead pixels, shaky mic, but I do have that line in the top right in the plastic. I kinda like it, it gives the phone character.

I'm really starting to hate the power switch

I'm forever fumbling around to find it.
I fumble and fumble, then think I must have the phone upside down and fumble some more only to realize I've now turned it up side down.
I thought I'd get used to it.
Not to mention I seem to be getting bits of pocket crap in between the button and the phone.
On my HTC EVO LTE the phone used to come on if I stooped down (I keep it in my fron jeans pocket) and I made little guards for the button to stop it.
Now think I'll have to glue on a bump on to the button or something.
It would be nice if they put a dimple or raised it slightly. So you could positively find it by feel every time.

I have same problem as OP. I have an Incipio case that has a cut out for the power/IR blaster. It also has a cut out on the bottom for the micro usb charger, which is almost the same exact size. I too have flipped the phone over several times. I may have to get the Mophie just for the simple fact that it has a raised power button.

Not sure if I understand right but you could do what I do and stop using the power button. What I do is rooted with bulletproof kernel I use the double tap the bottom of the screen to turn it on and then I can either swipe the back+home button to turn the phone off or use a widget called screen off on my desktop (usually do this since its more convenient). This works perfectly and is much easier than the akward power button

A good design everyone WILL naturally get used to. A poor design won't.
If my car pulls to the left and I can't get used to it, does that make it my fault !!! That's what your saying.
Looks like I'm not the only one having issue with it, so it is a the "Phones Fault".
Like I said a tiny dimple on the power button or similar so you can find it with frozen fingers in the dark. Would go a long way.
Small cues that help you have the phone oriented correctly would go a long way.
Weight, Texture, Dimples make the difference.
Maybe this app would help out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2227516

IF your car was designed to pull to the left it wouldnt be the cars fault.
The recessed power button is a design, no fault of the phone itself.
I, and I'm sure countless others here have no issues with the power button.

I, for one, love the power button. Never once thought the button was hard to find or hard to press. I also love the tactile feel of this power button after having used a GNex, which I hated the power button placement - too easy to press accidentally.

HTC One Power Button Mod

I remember a long time ago when I was on Windows Mobile I used the HTC Tilt (great phone then). Like the One it had a flush power button and someone had the grand idea of painting over it with clear nail polish, which I did and it worked GREAT. You simply isolate the button with some tape and give it 2 or 3 coats and you have a nice attractive power button. It work and lasted me quite a while on that device.
So I'm thinking I want to do the same thing for my One, but I'm worried that it may interfere with the IR blaster and if so, could possibly harm the button if I decide to remove it.
Thoughts? Does anyone have any clue on how this will affect the device IR functions? I may just go ahead and be the guinea pig either this evening or tomorrow.

This is interesting.
go get your TV remote and try it... if it doesn't work, nail polish remover should take it right off. if it does work, do it on the One and report here with pics/results!
That's a good suggestion to try it on a TV remote. I'm curious how well it works but probably wouldn't do it.
I do have trouble using the ir blaster through glass, but I think it's reflecting off the glass instead of passing through. The nail polish would be flush so no chance of reflection I don't think.

My thought is if you dont mind missing BT audio is get rooted and install bulletproof kernel instead. Only difference from this video is I use the double tap to turn the screen on since its more convient but either way works. I literally dont touch the power button unless I need to reboot/shutdown/recovery/ect
I got bold and went for it. Ill post a quick write up tomorrow with some photos. In the meantime I'm waiting for it to dry. I'll give it until the morning before I take the tap off and test it IR. if the IR doesn't work I haven't lost much anyway but will have a better power button.
Done and IR still works great. The polish is still soft so it keep taking the shape of my finger print when I use the button. It did the same when I did this mod before too so if it goes as well as it did the first time it will be set in a couple days. I'll probably do one more thin coat later to clean up edges and smooth it out some.
Mod away folks.

When I did the mod before it lasted me . While though I don't recall exactly how long. I do 3-4 coats and it hardens over time and showed no signs of wearing off when I finally sold it. I can't say with any certain t how long this will last but a fresh coat is easy enough to do so im not worried about it too much.

As stated.. it's to raise the button a bit and make it easier to find or press without looking.
As a quick update... still no chipping or wear down. Still going strong!
Can anybody comment on whether this will work on power buttons that are 1-1.5mm BELOW the plastic?
I just got a repair done, and it seems my power button dropped about 3mm.

Yes I think it is. Because the volume buttons also barely stick out. It's part of the design I think.

This works great for me - I have used my on button about 4 times since I started using this app, and those were in error. I have it set up so that it unlocks the phone when I take it out of my pocket, and locks again when I put it back in. It uses proximity sensor, and doesn't seem to eat much battery.

i think this power button is defective. there is no tactile feed back, its almost flush to the body.

Mine is flush too but it's tactile.. Anyways i use sweep to wake anyways.. Much easier to do
You could get a TPU skin with no cutout like I did. I feel that there is no problem with the bare power button. However, the TPU skin amplifies the feedback at least 5x.
BTW: S2W uses up extra battery life. It keeps the capacitive panel on, even when sleeping.

I believe s2w doesn't use extra battery life
Mine too. I'm on my second replacement and the power button has gotten substantially worse lol. It's completely flush and there is no "click." Its more of a mushy, jammed press, it pisses me off

I've been searching and even a lot of reviews, including gizmodo mention that the buttons are too flush.
