So I'm reading up as much as I can about flashing a custom kernel for my m7att and have some questions:
1. I am looking mostly at Elementalx, but I run SlimKat, what version should I use.
2. What is Aroma installer, is that instead of Clockworkmod?
3. Can I brick a device by doing it wrong, or will I always be able to get back to the recovery?
I know these are basics, but any help is greatly appreciated. I am looking at this mostly for battery savings and to cool down the device.
Thanks again!
Edit: meant Aroma, and I see that I would just use Clockworkmod. Is it running more stable now on the ONE, I've seen some bad reviews...
Aroma is the script Language used to automate the install. Helps keep us beginners from completely messing up. I use twrp so I can't speak about CW

I switched over to TWRP so I know it'll work
Will Viper 1 work with the Elementalx kernel?
Thanks!
Don't know. I'm on Insert Coin. Maybe someone familiar with Viper 1 will come in.

1. We will not recommend you a particular kernel, you'll have to try which one works best for you
2. Like said before aroma installer s a script that allow you to install things (i.e kernel) via a graphical user interface. When you choose ''install'' in twrp and select the kernel, it will lauch the Aroma installer and from there you can install the kernel and choose some customization. It looks like this (this one is the aroma for the bootloader reset tool):

3. Yes you can softbrick a device if you flash an incompatible kernel for your rom. In most cases this will result in a bootloop and you should be able to restaure your device either by flashing a proper kernel or restoring using a ruu or other solutions.

ElementalX is for GPE based rom or Sense Based rom ONLY. So if your rom is GPE or Sense based, it should work without any problem. ViperOne is based on Sense so afaik it should work.

Did you already try it yourself? NEVER I REPEAT NEVER release a ROM, without having tried it yourself... Noone wants a ROM, that probably bricks ones phone...
Ok, it's proved to work, obviously.
Sorry for my criticism then, but I have already seen a lot of guys publishing their stuff, without testing and then bricking a lot of noobs devices... quite uncool Hope you feel what I mean

Ok, I am still about to test it, so I cant say much on this right now, but I already have one thing, pls dont use my nandroid. Better flash a fresh rooted version by Serg... in the dev section, since my nandroid and Redys repack might contain bugs, that I brought in, in order to be able to root the phone. I changed a lot of settings and probably a lot of files through this and I dont know, if this bug wont keep on being in your ROM then and might cause failures. So this is the first thought
Ok, short run, and I gotta confess, it is FAST and very reactive. Good point.
Found a few bugs though.
And I am not a fan of the HTC look, but that's not important, I think some ppl like it a lot.

Here the bugs/things I would change.
Lockscreen: I dont like the LG look, i prefere the one Huexxx found/DxDiag32 ported or even the CM7 one, like this:
Remove the Musicplayer from notification, since it is without function:
Remove Widgets, that dont work:
Add reboot and recovery reboot option here:
Nice Widgets are in there as well:
And they are resizeable:
Pretty cool
So all in all, a cool ROM, but still need some work
And like I said, maybe use a clean v20n german ROM to begin with, even though it is really smooth.
A custom kernel plus some more governors would be nice, to make it completely laag free, but you could also at least implement the new kernel without turning off softkeys. Pretty easy, if you work with the kitchen
I would take the one with stock LG kernel, but DVFS disabled, cause then we can use apps like SetCPU, without a lagging/freezing phone and set stuff the way, we want it to.
Hope it helps you a bit
Tnx nooby im going to work on it but abouth the lockscreen i was thinking if htc lockscreen.

I understand being new to the android scene. When i started out I though you could flash roms from any device on any device:silly: but its more the reason to do your research and understand what your doing to your expensive device and how to do it. Lucky this device is rather hard to brick.
You first need to unlock your boot loader if you havnt already, install a custom recovery, make a backup, download the rom of your choice be it cyanogenmod or something else. Then use the custom recovery to flash it. all of these steps have been covered multiple times in multiple threads so you should have a easy time finding this information.
And IF you post a question here, don't post it on the CM thread AGAIN! Like others said, you should read everything about Android and custom ROMs you can find. The more you know, the better you get and you'll probably can save your device by yourself if you know how to most of the time.

Hi
I have a Samsung Galaxy SIII Mini GT-I8190N
Stock 4.1.2, I think currently on it.
From Carphone Warehouse (UK) Not sure if it is unlocked to any network...(O2 if any)
Can someone please give a noob to rooting some advice on the best way to back up the system in case of a major disaster before rooting,
And also some advice on how to root, install 4.2.2 on it.
Total noob with android so a walk through would be appreciated.
I have looked at the forum but am a bit baffled as a lot of the walkthroughs seem to fail for some and work for others....
Thanks in advance.

I'm assuming that increasing the Flash Counter value and reseting it to default is not a bad thing, so here's simple instructions:
Make sure you have proper usb drivers installed for your samsung or ODIN won't find the phone!
Important! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147852
Step 1, Download ODIN, CWM and the rooted 4.2.2 ROM + GAPPS you wish to install and copy them into your phone (phone memory or external SD)
Step 2, Shutdown your phone. Boot it into Download mode (press and hold VOLUME DOWN and HOME KEY, switch phone on and let go the two buttons when you see the warning)

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",

}
Step 3, Use ODIN to flash custom recovery into your phone
Step 4, Reboot into the custom recovery (shutdown the phone completely, when it's off, press and hold VOLUME UP and HOME KEY, then switch the phone on. when recovery logo is on, you can let go off the two buttons)
Step 5, Use CWM to backup the current ROM and install the desired ROM. Remember to do a Factory Reset + DALVIK/CACHE format before rebooting!
Step 6, Install Triangle Away, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22462960&postcount=1 and nuke away the pesky Flash Counter!
Happy times!

If that's the first boot after installing another rom, let it sit around for ~5minutes. If it takes longer than that, something is wrong. You are missing GUI (TouchWiz/Trebuchet) or you have flashed completely wrong rom.

The most simple way is to reflash the stock rom back in the phone.
Hey guys, how's it going?
Well, I recently bought an HTC One M8. It is the Sprint Variant I believe. So it was an unlocked version with ViperOne 1.7.0 installed. I checked for updates and found there was an update for 1.8.0, to which I instantly updated. I was aware that Viper 2.4.0 is available for the device too, hence my question is if it's okay to update to flash/update full ROMs to this unlocked M8? I am aware that I would lose the unlock on non Sense based ROMs though. So, is there anything I should consider/remember before flashing the full ROM to the device?
Another problem I am facing is with achieving S Off. I am aware about what all of this is as I have always been involved with such things but always with factory unlocked variants. Anyway, I tried the firewater method, for at least 10 times but everytime it says that it can't S Off my device. (Screenshot Attached)

}
Is there something I can do about this? Anyone who had faced this and resolved it?
Other than these two little issues, my final question is that IF in case anything goes wrong, would a Nandroid Backup restore my phone to the current state INCLUDING the SIM Unlock?
In simpler terms, can anyone tell me what all can and can not affect the SIM unlock on my device? Kernels, ROMs, Mods, etc?
I did a lot of search before posting this thread (two nights) and found answers to many other questions and doubts but not to these three. Sorry if these are all actually noob questions. Thank you!
Anyone?

Only way to achieve soff is sunshine in conditions like you. It works like a charm. if you would have problem with sim unlock, Then, flash Bad Boyz rom and follow the instruction at second post. Just past same path 4 days ago
I would definitely do all of this but now I have another problem. I attempted to change runtime on Venom 1.8.0 but now it wouldn't reboot. Doesn't go past "HTC One" screen on boot. Can't try any other ROM because my broadband is having troubles. *sad*

Their is a small zip to change runtime back to dalvik it's your best choice or reflash the Rom next time do a nandroid before doing that. Your phone will not boot because you have a tweak or theme/mod that art doesn't like.. good luck remember the zip is in the read me section of viperrom.

I had a couple of NANDROID backups but they didn't correct the issue either. In the end, I had to wipe system and flash the ROM again. Works fine since then.

Ever since I updated to lollipop my V4A audio driver has stopped working and after several different kinds of reinstalls and whatnot i still cant get it to work. Any idea what I can do to fix this? I love the phone sadly it just lacks a bit in sound quality over the headphone jack and viper4audio helped a lot with that. Ive looked the issue up on several forums but I only get fixes for nexus or custom roms, help with stock rooted note 4 fix please

In order to get V4A audio, you need to install a custom kernel that supports and can change SELinux to permissive. In my case I'm stock rooted with AEL kernel installed.
You can install whichever kernel you like for Lollipop, but it needs to support Permissive, for V4A to work.
Hope it helps,
Cheers.

It shouldn't affect or interfere with your apps. I've been using AEL for a while, and it's been flawless. ?
As the previous post states, put the kernel on your SD and flash with TWRP or CWM.
