elitist ****s....
Well, you need a data plan to activate your G1, IF IT ISN'T rooted. if it IS rooted, then you can go to the "settings" menu if u connect ur phone to ur computer thru adb. jesusfreke made a tutorial on it. try searching it in the "android development" forum.
I'm sorry, was in a bad mood today. Everyone has them...
Jesusfreke's tutorial is the way to do it without simcard, however if you know someone with a data plan just borrow their sim card and use it through setup. That is much easier.
If you have a sim and are rooted, MOST roms allow you to skip setup and/or activate over wifi, this is the route to go if rooted.
hi guy's long time lurker first time poster...
i'm having a problem with all sms sending 'failing' when ever i've got packet data turned on. its not something i've ever come across on any of my previous devices... any nudge in the right direction will be very welcomed.
p.s i'm on t-mobile uk if that make any difference.
Thanks in advance
john
check your APN settings and MMS settings.
They are sharing the same apn, but i've been playing with the setting (all know variations) but still every time i use packet data it will always fail to send any sms's.
It's becoming very annoying to have to manually connect every time i want to use some data.

Hey!
Just ask from you mobile provider, what must be your APN settings. In 2.3.4 you must ALWAYS put the APN settings manually. If you added them, save and pick it. ALL DONE!
CHEERS!
thanks i'll give it ago, was just using the setting they sent me over the air and already in sim card, will input manually when i get home, and let you know.
Thanks again for the help.
Edit: no this didn't work either, now im really peeved(lol). can't for the life of me think what else it could be. would flashing the wrong modem file cause this? as its all i can think that is left to try....

Hey!
Try to flash stock ROM. We will see what happens then, dose the settings working in 2.2.1. For me was the stock ROM XXKC1. Let it try.
CHEERS!
I flashed 2.3.3 this morning.... will try 2.2.1 tonight, hopefully this will solve it,
Thanks

Hey!
THX man, but you not need to thank always(thx anyway ). If you dont get you problem fixed, you can try others STOCK firmwares. Sometimes it takes a lot of flashing, but it can help sometimes too.
CHEERS!
yeah flashing to 2.2.1 fixed it but i want to use FirstUA-ROM-v1.2 do you think theres a way round it?
p.s i always thank those that try to help me.
Same issue
I have the same problem, bud.
Updated my Ace to Gingerbread and found I couldn't send SMS with Packet Data turned on. Turn it off and SMS sends OK. I'm with Virgin (UK) which I believe is the same network as T-Mobile.
Re-flashed Froyo and all works as it used to. After that, I fired up Kies as I hoped to get an official version that way and sure enough it said there was a firmware update available so I installed that. Turned out to be the official Samsung Gingerbread and yet again i broke SMS when Packet Data was turned on.
I'm back to Froyo once more and have emailed Virgin to ask if they can offer any advice. I notice another report of this issue on another forum where the guy called Virgin and was apparently told the fault seemed to be with VM.
Sorry this doesn't provide an answer but thought it worth corroborating your symptoms.
Cheers!
Use fla.sh rom instead. Its very stable and fast . Multi csc too.

Big thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one with the problem(thought i was loosing my mind, lol)
actually the phone was a virgin locked phone but was unlock to all networks by them for me... maybe something i can look into.
p.s flashing fla.sh didn't fix it either..
I am having this same issue using stock 2.3.3.
I bought my ace factory unlocked using it on orange. Sometimes sms will send, but majority of time it will fail until I disable packet data.
I tend to email or use gtalk/kik for messages but the odd time I want sms this gets annoying.
Oddly I never had this problem on the 2.3.4 I tried from samsfirmware.
Got the same problem. Using 3, and they just gave me a new SIM-card. Gotta finde some clever way of disabling data every time I open Messaging
yeah im looking for a way of re enabling the option in the extended power menu but with out much luck, all the modded ones seem to leave it out.

Okay, gonna try to explain it.
1. Go to /system/app and rename Mms.apk to Mms.apk.bak
2. Install the attached Mms.apk (It's from CM6)
3. Download AutomateIt from the Android Market (Just the free one)
4. Open it and add a rule. Trigger should be "Application Status Trigger" and the app is Messaging. Make sure "Application Adtivated" is marked. And the action should be "Set Mobile Data" and "Mobile Data Enabled" should not be marked.
5. Save it and add a new rule. Trigger should be "Application Status Trigger" and the app is Messaging. Make sure "Application Adtivated" is NOT marked. And the action should be "Set Mobile Data" and "Mobile Data Enabled" should BE marked. Save this one, and you are done!
This will disable Mobile Data every time you open your Texts, and enable it then you exit your texts. The reason you need the CM6 Messaging-app, is that this tricks doesn't work with the original Samsung-app

Scary Alien for helping with some of my brainstorms
CPCookieMan for pointing me in the right direction with my initial thoughts for this project
MongooseHelix for the idea of the script vs a flashable zip
This is a very simple script that utilizes the radiooptions command to disable the radio but still allow use of WiFi without having to use airplane mode. Great for people who just upgraded and want to use their older device for an mp3 player with WiFi access. I wanted to make it to be run in init.d on startup but haven't successfully got it working that way yet so for now it can be run with script manager. This script can be run as follows:
1. Download the script and place it somewhere on your SD Card. (Maybe make a folder named Scripts to keep things organized)
2. Download Script Manager from the market.
3. Open Script Manager and navigate to where you saved the script then select the script.
4. Check the options for run as root and if you always use wifi only because you don't have service on your device check off Run at boot as well.
5. When prompted by superuser allow superuser permissions.
I have tested this script on my Incredible and my Eris as well and should be universal to run on any android device.
Download Here
If you are using this on an inactive device and don't want the activation screen coming up after reboot and new ROM flash follow these simple steps.
*NOTE: you need to be using a ROM that has EPST.apk in it for this procedure to work.
1. Select emergency call and dial ##778.
2. Select edit and enter service password 000000.
3. Select NAM Settings.
4. Change Mobile Directory number to 0000000000 (Ten digits).
5. Change MIN1 to 0000000 (Seven digits).
6. Change Mobile Country Code to 000 (Three digits).
7. As you back out "Commit the Change".

Yes. It will work on any rooted device and any ROM. Just run through Script Manager and if you want to disable it change the settings within Script Manager to disable run on boot then reboot. It's that easy.

Yes.. It should work on any rooted device running any ROM. If you want to double check to be certain you can check inside the ROM for /system/bin/radiooptions, then you will know for certain it should work. The script uses that to shut down the radio.
Cool, almost makes me wish I would have kept my Eris.
tether?
So can this allow us to tether the wi-fi only phone to our new network phone? the idea being to use the non-network phone to stream pandora, use google maps, etc?

Doing that will work but next reboot you'll probably get the activation screen again. If not you'll get it again after another ROM flash but it will come back at some point. I think I noticed on my Eris it was after a reboot. This procedure below got rid of it permanently.
Then you shouldn't be prompted to activate again even after a new ROM is flashed

Absolutely. Simply open script manager and disable run on boot. You can then remove the script from your SD card.

Good point . No they won't. Dial *228 option 1. It will ask for the phone number you want to activate and that stuff will be done ota. That's how I activated my Eris with a different number as well. I would suggest making sure to do that from a stock or stock based ROM as well.

I have the HTC Evo View 4G that I did this too, but for some reason when I ran the script I got the signal bar with an x through it saying "looking for service". Isn't it when it looks for service it's draining the battery more? Isn't there anyway to completly remove the signal bars?
Also, I'm trying to remove the activation upon startup, but the View doesn't have a phone to it. is there any other way to disable the activation throuhg the registry or something?

It shouldn't be searching for service with the script running. Do you have the radiooptions command in system/bin? Apparently there are some roms around that do not.

Hello all... In my trying of firmwares, XXLQE, XXLQI, UBLPH, UBLPK, I found on my phone at least, the best battery performance came from the VSLPA firmware. That is branded by Moviestar in Argentina.
My thing is more an irritation than a problem. In my wifi settings when it scans, the Moviestar network is listed and shows out of range. I remove the network manually but it comes back randomly. I want to remove it for ever as I do not think I'll be going to Argentina any time soon (not that don't want to go for sure). I hope someone knows where the network is stored so I can edit it out. Thanks in advance....
Apns are stored in apn.conf file in /system/ etc.
I dont know anything other than that.

Here in the UK with prepaid phones the typical amount you get is 300-500mb.
If you go into setting and data usage here you should be able to manage what apps get data sent back and forth or if you click the 3 dots at the top next to the search you can restrict all background data, not sure if this is what you wanted but as far as I am aware this is the only way.

You can restrict individual apps, so I supposed you can either restrict all then remove Skype or restrict only the ones you want.
