Hey guys! As you should know the Nexus 4 is affected by various problems...one of the most annoying surely is the "hard to press" power button. Well no fear my friends! This tutorial will show you how to fix the problem!
------------
READ CAREFULLY
- I don't take any responsability with this. This fix require you to open your Nexus 4. Don't try it if you don't know very well where you're putting your hands.
- This fix doesn't replace any component, it just will fix the button.
------------
FIX STEP BY STEP
1) Shutdown the phone
2) Remove the backcover (use one of the guides you can find on Youtube)
3) Boot on the phone
4) Pick a plastic piece, work on it to obtain a smaller piece to put under the power button of the backcover
5) For every piece try different position if it don't work and then reinsert the backcover to test the key
6) Profit!
-------------
Questions/Answers
Q: Will it last as a fix?
A: I used the fix like a month ago, no problem until now.
Q: Can I use it on other phones?
A: Yes, I guess. If your phone uses the same system to power on the screen there shouldn't be any problem.
Q: What about using the glue to apply the fix?
A: Do it at your own risk. I prefer not to risk.
Q: Can I use another material (paper, iron...)
A: I don't know. I wouldn't use iron or other metals, cause it can conduct the voltage and cause issues to the phone. Also the paper doesn't work.
Qo it work also for the volume keys?
A:Yes, i think. Cause the volume buttons of the N4 works the same way as the power one.

I had this issue too, my power button started to fail in december, 2013... and I did something like this, but I used a small piece of paper (post-it, actually :laugh and worked like a charm until 2-3 weeks ago. I'll probably open my N4 again to replace my workaround, it's starting to fail again.
Plus: to save some pressings on power button, I've installed a Xposed Module (GravityBox) that allows me to use volume buttons to wake up the screen as well, each time I press one of the buttons

Yeah paper could work but it's easier to "ruin" or "corrode", expecially if you think that the Nexus 4 often heat a bit too much. Moreover the paper piece can't be blocked like the plastic piece by the backcover and it could fall inside the phone and ruin something!
Also here's a photo of the original plastic piece I used. Then i've colored in red the plastic piece that I effectively have under the backcover, so you can better see the dimensions..

Sometimes my power button does not work, so I have to press it a second time. The other strange thing is that when I press it to lock the screen (and turn it off), it locks the screen but also turn the screen on showing the lock screen. So will this fix solve my problem? It's really annoying... this nexus is really cheap D:
If you encounter a lock-relock issue maybe u have a different problem, the key press like two times. Yes, i think it could resolve it

Yeah it's really annoying and it happens on a lot of ROMS and kernels. When I take the phone to unlock it, the touchscreen does not work and I have to restart it holding down the power button (not too easy because mine, as I said, does not work well) D:
P.S: right now I'm using a Note 2... great replacement xD

If u can try this fix and you know where you're putting your hands i recommend you trying it. For a long time i've been using also s2w and s2s or double tap to wake. During the last period I also "cheated" on the TouchControl settings so that I can use a "Touch to wake" that for me was really useful but the matter with this functions is that alot of times i have switched on the phone just by keeping it in my hand and this was very annoying.

Yeah I know that feel, currently i'm waiting for a OnePlus One, my girlfriend has one and she have the exact same problem, because of the Double-tap-to-wake feature..
Great trick.
I have fixed my mushy power and volume buttons using small pieces of gaffer tape, cut with an scalpel, and pasted on the internal button.
Seems more easier to work the correct size, and thanks to the gaffer, it sticks in place, but can still be removed without leaving glue.
The response is better than when my N4 was new.
Thanks for the tip !

When the screen gets unresponsive you can easily just tap the upper left corner at it'll respond.

I mean seriously watching this video the buttons don't even vanish when you're in an app. I mean seriously how did Google think this was a good idea? Means you just hit them all the time or you have to be really careful where you touch and they don't change to which way you hold the phone.
How hard is it to A. Use that massive bottom part of the Bezel with Hardware buttons or B. Have some kind of gesture to hide them? I don't care if there is some rooted app out there, it needs to be standard, I just don't get how Google have overlooked this. People keep making a case that software buttons are better because you can change them....... have they ever changed? They've been the same standard design since I started using Android and whocares if they change in the future? I'm using my GS2 and the buttons work fine, just because they look different doesn't mean they have less functionality.
this may come off as I'm defending the Nexus 4 mindlessly but I'm not a huge fan of touch screen gaming. The whole reason I got the Evo Shift instead of a higher end phone was for the keyboard so I could play my games the way I like. I actually just bought a PS3 controller for my phone but I have to wait until Sixaxis Controller updates for 4.2. Though of course it doesn't work with most app store games, but I don't really enjoy playing those anyways

This is not a Google problem, this is an ap developer problem. They can design the game to function like you want but they choose not to. Blame them, not Google.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The whole point is to create the "physical button feeling" yet have them flexible for different apps. I think its a great idea! Physical buttons are annoying and are locked into doing only one function. Getting rid of the navigation buttons is like telling apple to get rid of the app dock at the bottom of their phone..... that's the way it was designed for the majority of users. If you don't like it then find a way to change it....you can its Android.
Dude chill... the software buttons are just another method like capacitive touch buttons..just incorporated into the screen. jus look at the specs of the nexus 4 as it has a 4.5 inch screen... if u cant live with that and want a bigger screen then fine move on and get the one x+ or something that has 4.7 inch screen plus capacitive touch buttons.unless you want THEM to disappear in an app too...
If we are going to complain about button placement can we not start with developers persistence with placing menu buttons at the top of most apps! They either have long fingers or small phones. I found this annoying on my SGS1 and very annoying on my Note 2, for obvious reasons. IMO Boat Browser is one of the few browsers that have placed the menu and navigation buttons in a sensible place.
I'm actually a big fan of the software buttons. This is one of the reasons I changed from the OneX to the Nexus4.
There are so many more interface possibilities with the software buttons, and as mentioned earlier the software devs need to make their apps more aware of their presence.
I haven't had to used on screen buttons with my gnex for about 10 months now and same with my Nexus 7 since I got it. There's a way to remove the on screen buttons by modding the res-framework apk. It's as simple as finding the option and and changing it then recompiling the new apk and pushing it to your phone.
Not sure if it's still this simple since I haven't had to do it for a while now that there are a few roms with the option to remove the Nav buttons. I would try if I had the Nexus 4 but that might not be for an while now.
I'm sure this feature will be included in nexus 4 roms too just be patience. I'm the meantime you can check out LMT, its a nav button alternative that uses pie menu that disappears when not in use.
If done right, the on-screen buttons are actually great.
If there are no dedicated buttons. they could either make the screen bigger, or remove the bezel on the bottom of the device, making it significantly smaller.
Also, there needs to be an option to hide them manually whenever you want, whether the application supports hiding the buttons or not. I know that there are such features in CM10 and other custom ROMs, but this needs to be a default feature on any device with on-screen buttons.
I like the buttons and they are not visible when viewing full screen video. That to me is when I care most about the screen space.

A lot of us like the onscreen buttons. If you don't, get another phone. Most don't have them. Those of us that like onscreen buttons have like 2 options, you have 100000. If Google puts capacitive buttons on the next Nexus because of whiners like you, I'm gonna be really upset.
I would have preferred hard buttons and a full 4.7 screen. Similar to the One X. There are only 3 phones with on screen buttons. Most game devs are gone make thier games for the biggest market which is hard button phones.

So am I. It makes navigating through the system easier and a lot smoother. Just like the multitasking icon, you don't have to press and hold like in the galaxy s phones for example. Also OP, the software keys disappear when you watch a vid, YouTube etc.... And you mentioned that they should use the bottom bezel, well that's where the notification light is.

If I correct, the 3G variant have different structure inside, so maybe just maybe ASUS could done something with how the screen attached ? or am I dreaming?

Twice i had to cold reset the device (30 sec press on power button) to get the screen running by rebooting...
It really is a matter of luck considering the price/power ratio

got my 32GB nexus7+3g version yesterday, so lucky not have screen bending or dead pixels problem so far. Think all because of ASUS QA control noticed the early problems, so the latter product line is fine. One of the tiny defect is, when rotate the screen to horizontal level, while tap the home and back buttons, it makes tiny cracking sound, after close check the screen, I found that outer screen and edge metal line are not fully mending tight.
3g version here - no problems. :good:

32GB 3G here - all good, no issues at all - an exceptional device (from a long time Apple user)
Quick question for 3G users:
Is your sim tray kinda loose a little bit? I mean not loose but it is moving little bit left and right when i move it with my finger, is it same for everyone? I don't wanna lose it.
while my brothers 16GB had no screen lift, my 32GB had lift. I opened it and found that, while face down on the table, the top right screw was 2/3 unscrewed and while tightening it I saw that the screw about an inch or so down from it for the screen was missing all together. Luckily my 3G doesn't have any lift, at least not that I have noticed yet.
My only guess that they (ASUS), made a QA on it, and one better then on no 3G, I mean it's not like adding a flash memory, but rather add a 3G module, so they have had to make some big internal changes there, that may include the way how the screen holds.

I hope you're right. I did a side by side comparison of my Nexus 4 and HTC One Developer Edition, and for me I can confirm there is definite input latency on the HTC One (at least on the specific device I received). On my HTC One, a good way of checking this was in the browser -- if I placed my thumb on the screen and held it there (in an area that doesn't have a link so a dialog box doesn't pop up), and VERY VERY SLOWLY rocked my thumb up and down, the screen didn't scroll at all. Not only that, but at this point if I kept my thumb pressed on the screen and moved it at any speed up and down the entire display, nothing happened at all. It's not only until I removed my finger from the screen and placed it back down again that the touch input worked again. This DOES NOT happen on my Nexus 4 -- rolling my thumb ever so slightly results in very minor scrolling -- the way it should work. I will hopefully record a video of this and throw it up on YouTube so you can see what I'm talking about.

That is very interesting indeed. I can confirm the same behavior on my One. Time to pull the SGS3 out of mothballs and see what happens there.
Must be something wrong with the DEV edition, because my UK One is faster and smoother than my old S3, Sony Xperia Z and Nexus 4. There's no input latency on my One, certainly none detectable by humans. Also on the test above, the screen moves perfectly fine.

Complaints:
* The M8's screen is almost impossible to see when wearing polarized sunglasses. This problem is only when you hold the phone in portrait mode. In landscape mode it looks fine. This is a common problem with LCD screens, but there are steps HTC could have taken to eliminate it, such as using a 45 degree extinction angle, or using a compensating film.
* Button placement: I do not like M8's button placement. I find it hard to turn the phone on or off without inadvertently pressing one of the volume buttons. I greatly prefer M7's recessed volume rocker to M8's non-recessed rocker.
* THIS MAY BE FIXED WITH THE NEW RADIO FIRMWARE IN THE 1.54 UPDATE: My biggest complaint is the fact that the phone often takes over an hour to connect to LTE even when there is a STRONG signal.
My complaints:
1. The power button being on the top of such a large phone is pretty annoying. I came from the GS3, which had the lovely side power button. This is something that I will get used to though. It'd be nice if they made a gesture to lock the phone too.
2. Since the latest update, my mobile signal has been poor. Where I used to get LTE, I now get 3G only. My wifi signal is fantastic compared to the GS3, but the mobile internet is looking rough. If I don't see improvement, I may need to replace the phone to see if it can get better.
Everything else is just incredible. Even with these complaints, I freaking love this phone!

No you can't.
Only way that's possible is if you're on wifi (obviously).
Here are mine, which I'm sure others have mentioned.
1) Size; I actually prefer the size of the M7 over this. It's hard to reach the power button as someone mentioned and the phone is very hard to hold without a case because it's slippery. It almost feels like I'm holding a gigantic EVO LTE. The m7 felt right in my hands. I was surprised because most of the reviews mentioned that it was easier to hold than the m7 due to the curved back. Using it with one hand is pretty tough because I'm so afraid I'm going to drop it.
2) The Gun Metal Gray definitely scratches very easy. I have a small scratch on the back of my phone already and I'm not quite sure how I got it since I baby my phone like my own kid. i was actually going to wait out for the silver version, but with Bestbuy price matching Amazon in conjunction with their $50 instant credit for people who registered their numbers, I felt like I needed to jump on it for $100.
3) Loss of data randomly (never happened on my M7); I understand there is only one antenna and Spark phones rely on CSFB and that it will eventually be fixed.
No other complaints other than those 3. Love the SD Card, Boomsound Speakers, Camera (Yes I do) and the amazing battery life. I no longer have to worry about running out of juice for the entire day.

I'm very tempted to buy this phone on my upgrade but I know that I do not want to cover it up with a case. I only ever keep it in an empty clean pocket or laying back-down on my desk which is usually clean. Will I have an issue with tiny scratches accumulating in the clearcoat?

My Observations
I got this phone as a precursor to replace my 5S, if the iPhone 6 doesn't have a 5" screen. I've only had it one day so far my observations are:
The phone takes a long time to load web pages and play youtube videos
The placement of the buttons is a bit awkward.
The Knock feature doesn't work all the time, nor do the swipe to unlock.
I must've gotten a factory defect, the screen is starting to come off in the upper right hand corner where the front camera sits. How that happened? I couldn't tell you.
I have the Sprint Spark Icon in the notification bar (Spark is in Orlando) but the switch between networks is sometimes slow.
Sometimes to get rid of notifications, I have to reboot the phone. Some icons will stay in the notification area even after the app is closed or I clear it.
Coming over from iOS, not being able to quick scroll to the top of a page is frustrating to say the least. The only place that works is in Blinkfeed, which is pretty cool, IMO, thus far.
Twitter apps for Android suck (can't knock the phone for that though.)
I hate the loud beep you get in your ear when ending a call if you're wearing a Bluetooth.

My only gripe is the stupid HTC in a space not used for anything else. If we are dropping capacitive buttons, give us more screen in that spot... not a space for logo.

reboot, itll work again if it just happened to stop.
I've rebooted twice
I assume you checked that rotation is enabled via either settings menu or notification quick setting panel?
My n7 did that one time and I gave it a gentle drop flat on a table and it started working. Never had the problem again. Just enough to jar the sensor a bit and "unstick it". If that's even possible. It worked though.

Anyone know about how to get the home screen and lock screen to rotate, or is it just not possible with the stock Google launcher?

You can use Ultimate Rotation Control and force auto rotation for both launcher and lockscreen:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.fameit.rotate
mine is not working eaither it was doing just fine out of the box but now its gone and I think it is affecting my proximity sensor as well when I am ending a call the screen wont come back on after I take the phone away from my ear to get the screen back on to end the call
I dropped once and stop working.
With a few knock and working again, some mechanical part may get stuck.

This thing is awesome. Just remember to select "Force Rotate" twice, once in the app's General settings and once in the app's settings under "Special Cases, Lock Screen".
Mine crapped out today as well. Bad accelerometer. Replacement I coming.

Hah! Came to this thread to share my experience. Sort of dropped my Nexus 6 head down and auto rotation stopped working. Panicked for a while, flashed all system images but to no avail.
Then I thought about dropping my Nexus 6 bottom down and it works now LOL. Damn the internals are fragile.
P.S. Dropped with a case on so no biggie.
This seriously works

Mine stopped working and I was about to re-flash a new ROM to see if that was the problem but I saw this thread too!
I previously dropped my phone from about 2 feet.
I dropped the phone about 4-5 inches face down (in a case) on my desk and that fixed it for me. Great to know it's that fragile
Installed the app suggested my auto rotate we all crazy upside down and sideways so I uninstalled the app and now all is well... Weird but it worked. Why I have no idea just works.

Stopped working after a drop (in a case). This solution worked perfectly for me. Had to drop it upright on the bottom edge onto a soft flat surface with a case from about 6 inches.
This happened to me last week, seemingly out of nowhere. I actually did drop my Nexus in it's case from a chair onto carpet. After reading this post I thought I'd try smacking the back of it but to no avail. I ended up dropping it again from the couch to carpet and after that it started working again! Strange but it works. Hope it helps someone with this issue.

After drop stoped working, but corrected after some hard punch
Awesome thread, mine stopped working after a pretty scary drop on the road side. After reading this thread I dropped mine on a carpet from about 8 inches. Nothing happened so dropped it again on its side and gave it a couple of firm slaps. Works now. Thanks all.
Same here drop in a case....stopped working. Gave some hard hits on the back to fix it.
