As you all know, a lot of what decreases your battery life over time is battery memory. Some apps pretend to fix that and some might actually help a little. Here's what you can do to fix it.
Use your phone until it turns off. Press power + volume down. Leave phone on until it dies. Charge it. Turn it back on and enjoy the 30 minutes SOT (for most people) of extra battery life.
If you have used the phone for a year without ever truly reaching the end of your battery life, your phone will stay on for 30 minutes to an hour. For me it stayed on for about 1.5 hours. My wife's phone stayed on for 1 hour and my brother's stayed on for 1.5 hours as well. I usually charged every other day but by the 5 PM of the second day I'd be around 10% and charging it as soon as I got home. If there was traffic, I have to charge it in the car. Most of my usage is not Screen On Time. I use maps with audio (bluetoothed to car without screen on) and music. Also music around when I'm running, and the normal texting, emailing, web browsing.
After doing this I get to about 10 PM of the second day before hitting 10% which is exactly what I wanted.
NOTE: You will get a blinking red light while charging afterward for about 2 minutes. Don't freak out. That's because it's a safety period when phone won't turn on to make sure enough charge is on the battery to complete a turn on cycle.
Hope if works for ya'll.
Well I generally heard its better to keep li ion batteries charged up as much as possible. Obviously doesn't mean charging in short bursts in between full charges. Just might want to put a little disclaimer saying your not responsible for anyone's phone when they get the red light of death.

I put a note down there. It's not a red light of death. Just a red light saying phone won't be able to turn on until sufficient charge is present.
Nobody really knows if its better to keep it charged or do full cycles. I know, that laptop batteries (from good companies.. like the Thinkpad batteries) last longer if they are allowed to drain close to 5% or so before charging. Also, the Thinkpad battery reset tool that tries to reset the battery KWh as close to factory config as possible works by completely draining a battery and recharging to full.
I did it just to see if it works for phone batteries and amazingly enough, it did.
I know its not the red light of death but its possible to get the solid red if someone doesn't pay attention and phone has turned off long enough.

I always thought modern li-ion batteries don't have a memory effect?

In general this sounds like a poor idea.
Here is why:
There is actual data that Li-ion batteries suffer a lot if dischared too much.
For example this graph:

(published in Journal Of Computing, Volume 2, Issue 4, April 2010 and can be found in this pdf)
The three lines
-Observed 10°C / 10% DOD (depth of discharge)
-Observed 10°C / 20% DOD
-Observed 10°C / 30% DOD
clearly show that lithium batteries deeper discharged than others under the same conditions suffer from faster loss of capacity with the number of charge cycles.
(On the other side the device can run on less charge cycles when the battery is discharged deeper, so an ideal compromise of DOD and number of needed charge cycles should exist.)
So in this case false calibration of the battery might have been reset, not improving the actual capacity but the one seen as usable by the OS.
Interesting observation. However there are (root) apps to reset the calibration as well.

I used this app, after inserting a new battery.
Great article!
On a side note: at work I use cordless drills powered by 18v li-ion batteries. The machine actually stops completely before the battery can drain to zero to avoid a deep discharge.

There's no such thing as "battery calibration", you turn off your phone and battery stats are zeroed, that's the only "calibration" you'll ever get. Batteries are passive, and lithium-ion technology doesn't like full discharge, so for the love of God don't advertise such practices.
What about short, partial charges... Do they have a significant effect on battery life?
For example, I drive delivery and am frequently in and out of my car and need my cell, and I use the GPS, so I am often connecting the phone to the charger for 10-30 minutes, sometimes less, and only for a few percent at a time.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
Li ion batteries *do* contain microcontrollers to regulate charge and discharge. Individual cells don't. This is the reason for batteries having more than two terminals.

Hmm, out of curiosity, do you have any idea why Apple recommends to drain their devices all the way at least once every several months if what you said is indeed the case?
I don't know if it makes a difference to the stuff that has already been said, and I am no battery engineer, but doesn't the Nexus 4 use a Lithium Polymer battery (NOT a Lithium Ion)?

There are others recommending this but I don't see the benefits for li-ion batteries. They just don't like completely running out, period.
Again, as I said, I got the idea from Lenovo's factory battery tool which recommends a battery reset every few months. It shows you the KW-hr at full charge and as weeks go by, that number keeps going down slowly due to partial charges and things like that. When I run the reset tool, it pretty much runs the battery dry and the next time I check the tool again, the KW-hr comes back up closer to factory setting.

((Please leave out any discussions about the "dangers" of updating in this thread))
So I updated via the leaked OTA 3 days ago and all is well so far. My battery has definitely improved by two fold (doubled). Prior to update my D3 would only go about half a day on light usage. Now it goes past 24 hours easy and could most likely push 36 hours (light use, wifi on 24/7).
However today I actually have been using my device quite a bit. Nothing heavy, really just organizing home screens and other duties of the sort.
So I look into my battery usage and after 6 hours my battery is at 40-50% with the display consuming a large amount of the battery. Brightness is at Automatic and the display itself has been on for 3 hours while using 50% of the battery. Is this normal or should % usage be more dispered between the running programs? I imagine the way battery usage stats work is that there will always be a program at the top with 40-50%... but maybe im (dead) wrong?
Also, how has your battery been since update?
(TL; DR) Display is raping my battery post-update, sup?

Edit: Dunno why the pics came out blurry, its fine in my system. Btw im using the (official) extended battery
Divide by zero, I dare you...
...Battery just hit 5% after 8 hours and 4 hours of display on. It unbelievably dropped from 15% to 5% with no brightness in less than a half hour, oh and I was in airplane mode. Literally all I've been doing since I turned my phone on today is have music playing and tweak my homescreen settings.
On standby the battery kicks ass but wow if I actually want to use my phone, the battery is as good as dead.
Im going to try out the standard battery that came with my D3 tomorrow and see if I get better results. Maybe its just my extended battery that's faulty.
If that fails then there has to be something wrong with the way my display draws juice from the battery... and ill probably have to get a replacement ... fml ... those crappy refurbed phones.

Battery life for me is mostly improved. I say mostly because in weak coverage areas this thing destroys battery life fast! 20% or more per hour kind of fast. Still better than stock, but not much in weak coverage.
Strong coverage areas, phone is much improved for battery life. Seems to be a baseband issue. Hint hint Moto.
What I have noticed the most, is that my data roaming enabled setting actually sticks now, even if i lose coverage. For me, that was one of the biggest things against this phone. It made my data so impossible to stay connected, it almost wasn't woth having.
I too have the official Moto extended battery, but i still struggle to get 24 hours out of my device with very mild usage. For example, i am at 15 hours now, no wi-fi usage, no bluetooth usage, both off, cdma mode only and display on time of 23 minutes total for that time. I'm now at 15%.
My other phones, 2 Eris, and 1 Inc2, get anywhere from 2.5-4 days on this kind of use. I am thinking about ditching this battery monger for an Inc2 until Moto gets their shnizit together, or CM7 is available via a custom recovery and unlocked bootloader.
I am loving having my data available without needing to recheck the data roaming box 100 times a day, and other fixes. I am glad i used the leaked update, as my phone was close to a brick without it anyhow.
Now all we need is the new soak test update to ensure we're official...my gut tells me we are.
Anyone else having issues with Swype predicting in Spanish after the leaked update was applied? Only happens in one app for me, so far.

Yes.
The battery stats (system reported percentage) appear unchanged, it's just the rendering of the stock icon that seems to be different.
*EDIT*
I use Battery Circle, as it reports in increments of 1%. I'm sure there are others.
Post-update, my battery usage has been noticeably improved. Before updating, it seemed that my battery drained at about the same rate regardless of how much or how little I actually used the phone (excepting major battery hogs, like fancy games or navigation). Now, the drop, when not being used, is significantly slower compared to before. Battery drain when actually using the phone seems about the same. So, overall, I'd say the processes like phone idle and cell standby have been optimized to great success.
-SR-
PS: "Display" now consistently lands at the top of the usage list, as is to be expected, and is much more believable than before the update.

Totally agree. My battery seems about the same if I actually use my phone but on standby my phone lasts like a champ.
I tried using my standard battery today and it lasted half as long as my extended one. Still, I doubt there's anything physically wrong with my phone... I guess batteries just suck all around lol

After the OTA update, I went from getting 8-12hrs of use to 2days easy.

Also, I love that the battery symbol is fixed now. It pissed me off seeing the battery lose a bar when it hit 94%. Threw me off so bad.
Hi all
My phone was in for repairs recently. I got it back on the 8th (April 2012) and so I flashed the Vulnerable Recovery sbf and restored my CM7 backup I made the day it went in for repairs. Now, it's been a month, and I'm not sure what it used to be like, but my battery can't even last a day.
Currently I'm sitting on 92% and and took it off charge exactly an hour ago...and since I'm typing on my phone right now, by the time I'm done, it will probably be 90%.
Yesterday, with minimal use, my phone, after 12 hours unplugged, was on 17%.
Should I be concerned? I'm using CM7.1.5.
Sent from my Milestone using XDA App
actually dude... i also noticed that as well.. cm7 really drains the battery quick...
I need to know what you all are experiencing. It's just a few minutes shy of 12 hours since I unplugged. And apart from two 1 minute calls and updating 4 apps on the market, I barely used the phone (only checked this thread about 4 times on the XDA app). It's now at 14%. It's a bit worrying, because I'm still on my way home, and it's almost like I can't manage a day at work without needing to charge. And I don't carry a charger or USB cable around most of the time.
Please give me your inputs. I know this is a fairly common problem to hear about, but I'm sure my CM7 experience could be better. Ps, I have calibrated the battery. Mostly keep EDGE on instead of 3G if I'm not really using it. Also, never have the GPS on, nor WiFi, nor Bluetooth.

The milestone never got a good battery life. Since my gf had it new, she cant make a day. (she's not a "phone" girl, she use it for txt/call, thats it).
Around 25%, you have about 3 hours on sleep. if I use it, it will drop to 0 very fast.
The phose is a year and half old, 2 battery rotation and froyomod 2.9.3 rom.
And for the same time of use, my desire z can last 2 and a half easy.
I have a mugen 1700 battery (same size as the original one but 20% more power) and I can use my phone for 24 hours without charging (even if I usually charge it during night even if not completely discharged) .
I use 3g with toggle2g enabled, Facebook, whatsapp and other common apps and Widgets, I have autosync fully enabled, and I play games do less than one hour per day.
Maybe you should try a different battery

um, what?
My phone is now one year old with stock battery. It's has a decent battery life, with toggle2g enabled, full autosync with Facebook, Path, Twitter, Whatsapp, Google+, Dropbox, Gmail, I get about 12 hours with moderate usage.
Brightness is fixed at max.
But it is unstable. Some days my battery will last for 12 hours, some days it's at 15% in 5 hours.
I dunno if it is CM7, but sometimes the phone has dificulties in syncing and it does get really hot.
To me, the stock battery is too hot, and keeps discharging faster the more hot gets. My mugen never gets that hot, and never fluctuates that much in duration

Oh yeah, I notice that too. when you use the phone, maybe 5 minutes later, the phone is hot.
One other thing, the milestone can charge 20% to 100% in an hour. its really fast, and its not very good for a lithium battery since it comes very hot.

actually, you should leave it a bit more in charging state, to avoid internal counter fail. That said, yes, the battery is rather fast in charging. I really suggest you the mugen battery, that's fast in charging but slow in discharging

Hello d.casper.b. I upgraded to CM7.1.5 (from stock Eclair) in Jan 2012. Since then I have a bit better batt life. Standard battery. I unplugged my phone yesterday (Sunday 15th Apr 2012) at about 12:30 - 1:00 pm. It's now Monday 3:10pm and I'm at 50%. My wifi is on all the time, except I turn it off when I go to bed so it don't wake me up with email or whatsapp messages. I don't have sync on and my phone is not on a data service. I have only used it for some light browsing since unplugged. No music or streaming data. No screensavers. Auto-brightness. I will use the bluetooth when driving home from work. That said - I typically get 24 hours+ on a full charge - except if I do some youtube or other streaming stuff.
That said - I don't think the ROM is the issue. You should try a battery calibration. Also - when it gets to 100% charge, leave it for at least 15-30 mins more plugged in.
Please stop suggesting battery calibrations. I really don't think anyone has a clue what they're talking about when they suggest it.
What you all call "battery calibrations" doesn't do anything other than make Android forget how the battery has been used -- that means the USAGE STATS. It can take a few charge/drain cycles before the battery meter reads true after that. It doesn't do a damn thing to your battery life.
destruct2k sorry - but no need to get hot under the collar about it. But in a sense - you have a point about the batt cal. It's been suggested on other threads - but I've never tried it - and so I shouldn't be recommending it to anyone. I only repeated what others had suggested some time back. Peace.
Anil - You're right, I overreacted there, but not too long ago I saw a 3-page article posted on Google+ by a woman that works on Android for a living about how "stupid" (her word, not mine) the concept was that deleting a file in software could somehow affect the battery's ability to hold a charge. Ever since that read, my opinion on "calibration" has changed significantly. If I could only find that article...
I have the same issue. And it's kinda strange because it's only comin up with CM 7.2
The worst battery life was 30 minutes. I charged it to 100% and I went for a walk before I went to my dance class to teach and after 30 minutes it's drained from 100 to 13% and I did nothing just listening to music. Weird. And when I charge my battery it's like going to 20% like in 5 mins and then 2 mins later it's on 60% and then 40 minutes later it's charged...I'm tryna find a solution for it cos it's soooo frustrating and I don't wanna change my phone til Milestone 4 is coming out!

Funny fact; the battery sticker is on the opposite side of the battery. So when you put it on the phone, you get the back side xD
My Review
This battery's a winner. Lasts a little more than stock and holds charge like a champ. Something I just noticed though, unlike stock, it gives you the 100% performance. Meaning, when it's discharged it will literally be completely discharged. Your phone won't even boot. Takes longer to charge (logically) and a little longer to discharge.
I won't bother posting screen shots or anything because everyone's battery varies. Everyone uses their phone in a different way so it won't be the same for anyone.
Either way, this battery's awesome. I highly recommend it.
EDIT: Here's an extra, the battery meter is completely accurate. Still no 1% drops or increments, but the drops happen when they're supposed to and give you literally the battery left.

Searching these forums is probably the worst thing anyone can do, it is absolutely packed with newbies like myself except they seem incapable of coherent thought processes and typing skills, and reading the forums in general is a headache in itself because of this, a little common courtesy with a link to a specific thread in mind wouldn't have been too much to ask, but whatever, I don't care.
I sprung for one of these 1500mAh batteries last night on ebay, cheap, but i've written down how much power I can get from my current 1350mAh 3-day old battery and plan to compare with the 1500mAh one when it arrives so i'll update the thread with the info so anyone considering knows it's worth it or not.
i think it's kinda expensive for such battery?
--EDIT--
i forgot to see if that's 3X battery.. soryy

Lol yeah. AND a charger. Pretty handy.
My 1500mAh battery came today, I only got the 1x but the sticker looks identical to the one in the OPs eBay link, it's charging now and then I will check the values and give an update.
This is the exact one I bought (eBay UK): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221074982744
Edit- Results:
Fully Charged on official Samsung 3-day old 1350mAh battery
Extreme Profile: 43hr 25min
Balanced Profile: 40hr 49min
Normal Profile: 34hr 5min
Fully Charged on 1500mAh replacemenet battery
Extreme Profile: 45hr 14min - 1hr 49min difference
Balanced Profile: 44hr 19min - 3hr 30min difference
Normal Profile: 35hr 30min - 1hr 25min difference
Note:
"Profile" refers to the Dolphin Browser HD addon "Dolphin Battery Saver" (Not very customizable but I like the browser and the addon is clean and simple)
Is there a more accurate battery indicator I can use as a benchmark tester anywhere? Either way it seems it gives a little bit more life, worth it for £4? Depends on how long it lasts before it starts losing the charge faster or whatever.. do Li-Ion batteries do that? Any battery experts care to comment, is this an acceptable battery life increase? It is only 1350mAh to 1500mAh so I wasn't expecting like 12 hours extra or anything.

Yeah, you're only supposed to get a little boost. It's only 150mAh more than the original. But the battery life completely depends on the usage of the phone.
What I do is just use the phone normally and keep checking the Battery Usage graph in the android settings. I don't use any other 3rd party apps.
And yeah, you're supposed to completely drain it before you charge it. Then when you do charge it, charge it to 100% nonstop.

According to this article on ArsTechnica (which as far as I know is pretty reputable) it says you shouldn't let it drop below about 20% before fully charging it again, it's a pretty interesting read, take a look:
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2011/02/ask-ars-what-is-the-best-way-to-use-an-li-ion-battery/
Another page suggests that charging a Li-Ion battery should be done with the device turned off, as the device can confuse the battery.
A portable device must be turned off during charge. This allows the battery to reach the set threshold voltage unhindered, and enables terminating charge on low current. A parasitic load confuses the charger by depressing the battery voltage and preventing the current in the saturation stage to drop low. A battery may be fully charged, but the prevailing conditions prompt a continued charge. This causes undue battery stress and compromises safety.

Well my friend, on the Ace, not dropping below 20% while trying to make a charge last a whole day seems almost practically impossible.
I've read that article before. Never really followed what it said and look at what happened to my battery. Dies after 40 mins with 3G on after a full (100%) charge xD
The charger appears to be designed to have a adapter to other plugs, is this the case?
I need the EU plug, for 220 V, can I buy that one and use it?
Yeah yeah I know its got Stamina Mode BUT! is anyone a little worried like me that the battery is 2330 and with a 5 inch screen and all those pixels its going to drain pretty fast. Todays phones with 720 screens and less pixels aren't the best. I'm still getting the phone but anyone else think we aren't in for glorious battery life here. (Stamina Mode may be the perfect fix for this though)
im hoping we get some battery reviews in soon. i have yet to see any real in depth reviews for the battery yet.

Yeah, thats the part of the reviews I will be taken proper interest in.
Coming from the One X, I'm not too worried about battery life as I'd be fairly confident it could last a bit longer than that phone. I charge my phone every night so once I get a day out of it thats fine.
I would like to see a review on the battery life though.
2330 AMH is really good though
I have 3100mah on my Galaxy Note 2 right now. Pretty huge battery - was supposed to last 3 days - it barely lasts 48 hours of "normal use". Not worried about Xperia Z, if 3100mah can't supply more than 5-6 screen time or 48+ hours - no battery will. If it lasts 2 full days, i'll be more than happy.
From what I've heard it's actually surprisingly good. Keep your brightness in check and you'll be fine. Both the Snapdragon S4 Pro and the MDM9215 are pretty efficient chips. The S4 Pro has (according to Qualcomm at least) a pretty high performance per watt so should do pretty well with relatively little power use.
From the 1st review:
"The Z’s battery-saving Stamina mode turns off data when the screen is off, boosting standby time by a factor of four, and we found it hardly lost any charge overnight – around 1 per cent, or none at all."
Now that's interesting.
Early tests not so encouraging. Worse than the nexus 4. Of course screen brightness etc aren't known at this point.
Let's hope it gets better with more charge cycles etc.

Doesn't look too good. 9 hours with 3h screen time... but the screen drained 42% of the battery so i guess it must have been under some heavy stress. Hope to see some more tests/reviews asap.
yeah, all we can do is wait for the NDA to break. I really hate waiting.
hope the battery's up to scratch because i haven't been this excited for a phone in a long time.
When do nda normally break? Seeing as it should release in some territories in a few weeks, I'm surprised there haven't been more reviews. Hoping to see some from the big sites any day now, especially the verge, gsmarena etc, as I'm really interested in battery life. Would need about 3.5 hours screen on time on mid brightness on 4g over say 15 hours off charger to work for me. Guess I could make do with 3 hours, but whichever of the new 5 inch phones does this will get my money. Come on Sony, don't disappoint me, cause I love the look of this phone!

A) reviews take time
B) It seems as though the CES units were not final... so the final product may not have been available until very recently.
Sony stores/reps are starting to get their demo units (which should be final hardware) so hopefully more reviews soon.
BTW NDA is usually to keep the details of the product hidden until Sony is ready to release. The phone has obviously been officially announced so this is not an NDA thing, just the fact that they don't want reviews done on inferior pre-release units.

And by looking at some threads here - it's perfectly understandable. People freaking out about things that are not even present in the real device like older software, lower benchmarks due to debugging firmware etc. But i'm really dying to see the battery life... if it's non-removable and it won't last 48+ hours of normal use, than it's not good. If it won't last 24+ hours of normal use than i guess i might reconsider ( and by normal use i mean texting, calling, maybe some music - not playing with it every second, that's reserved for few first days )
That screen shot over page with 9hr 33mins battery life. I didn't see the sign for power saver/battery saving mode being used. I mean surely the phone has to last a day atleast under moderate usage. I mean it has a bigger battery than the S3 and that lasted over a day on moderate usage and the cpu in the Z is supposed to be more power efficient is it not.
I also think battery life is a subjective matter for example me and my GF both had the note 2 and I set her phone up exactly how I set mine up with the brightness etc and she was getting 4days - 5days 20hours battery life and mine was getting 1day 20hours - 2days 23hours, why? because I use my phone a damn site more than she does and the variation is because some days I use more phone more than other days so some days the battery will last more and some days it will last less.

Well that's not reinventing the wheel, most battery saving apps like Juice Defender do that. However I need a stable IMAP connection and not fire up the screen constantly to check emails.
There is nothing special in making the phone last longer with software trickery, it's like making yourself last longer through thinking about your grandma.
A good battery and battery efficient hardware is needed.

Juice defender kills apps but issue with this is apps relaunch itself and then juice defender kicks in and kills it again and ends up in an infinite loop of killing and reviving of processes. The difference with stamina mode is that it was officially made by manufacturer within the ROM. So when you set it to get killed when screen is off there's something within the framework of the android core which they programmed to really halt the operation of the app/process and not just killing it. So in the end it is totally stopped

The thing with the S4 pro is that it can go both ways as far as efficient hardware is concerned. I think it has something to do with thermal insulation.
The nexus 4 and it's 2100ish mAh has notoriously poor battery times - in my testing, tapping out at just under 3 hours screen usage in around 8-10 hours of total use (everything stock + 4.2.1).
My padfone 2, on the other hand, with the same battery/screen size is a battery champ - regularly get 5 to 5.5 hours screen usage over a period of 18-20 hours. It beats out all my previous phones for battery life (minus the note 2), including the GS3 which had good battery life itself.
And no, i don't belive in disabling google now and push notifications. Without them the nexus 4 does better but the padfone 2 and its s4 pro do brilliant with them on.

No argument here - although if it actually does work - then it's a welcome trick. Juice Defender - imo - is useless. It never saved any battery for me - quite the contrary, constant app killing in the background resulted in worse battery life on my Galaxy S/Note devices, so i'm curious how will Sony implement such a feature.

Why would you guys use JD for killing apps? That doesn't make sense. Its main use is to manage radios etc. depending on battery & screen status. Anyway didn't do much for me so switched from that to Tasker.
Any thoughts on what's going on here? I've done a bit of googling around and I can't seem to find anything definitive.

I'd say 13 hours sitting at 50℅ is great. How much battery life do you normally get? Or what do you expect to get?

You wouldn't happen to be running GEL or a variant of it, would you? I'm having the same issue and I'm running GEL and I think that's causing the "wakelock" that makes Android OS appear as a battery hog.

Android OS will appear to take all kinds of battery when the phone isn't doing anything..... But after you rack up some good screen time it "usually" drops way down in the percentage. Your screen shot shows you haven't used the phone much... So Android OS will be high.... Cause not much else has been using battery.

After a bit of Googling around I'm wondering if maybe the culprit is GEL's "Ok Google" voice prompt? Apparently it can cause some wakelocks and it's redundant on our phone anyway.

Well I had nearly two hours of screen-on at that point so I wonder what much phone use is to you? And even if it drops relative to the screen it's still consuming a lot of power absolutely.
Also it appears that "Android OS" isn't any one process but "Provides basic operating system services, message passing, and inter-process communication on the device." So the actual culprit might be hard to track down if it's a rogue program routing its wakelocks through Android OS.

As I understand it, the percentages shown for each entry will always total 100%. If the only process using your battery was the OS, then it would show 100%. That would not mean the OS is a battery hog. Just that of all the possible users of the battery, the OS was currently the only one.
A better way to evaluate the total battery picture is to determine the overall drain per hour. In the example shown above, you are draining at an average rate of 3.5%/hour. Since Android is shown as 26%, that means Android is using the battery at an average rate of 0.92%/hour.
By comparison, I have every background process disabled that I can easily disable. I show a standby drain of about 1.2%/hour. Android is showing currently a discharge rate of 19%. That translates to a discharge rate of 0.228%/hour for a phone in standby with nothing going on. Doesn't sound too bad to me.... Android in your actively used phone is using the battery at a rate of about 3X that of mine in standby.

Yup. My phone is debloated to crap, Greenified and everything Motorola related is frozen... Except active notification. I get great battery life and my overnight, untouched phone standby is around 1 percent per hour.
I'd say that's pretty good. I've seen better idle loss than mine, tho can't explain how they got that... I've compared with others and with similar setups, they just get better idle loss for some reason. But I can live with my 1 percent per hour because I still get well over 24 hours total battery life and 5 to 6 screen on hours.
By the end of my battery life my "Android OS" is usually around 10 percent in gsam. Half way through my charge it's usually double that. But it lowers as time goes on.

Interesting that my 1.2%/hr standby drain is almost as low as yours. I am not rooted or greenified. I just made sure nothing except contacts and calendar auto-syncs. I also use DS Battery Saver to put most apps to sleep and turn off data and WiFi when the phone is in standby.
I have been avoiding trying to root due to the complex process and possibly creating issues. It looks like maybe it would not buy me much better battery life than I get now.

You don't have to root to have good battery. But for those having issues, you usually have to have root to do anything about it. Lol
The "should I root" debate goes beyond battery reasons tho. Getting rid of ads, removing system apps you don't want, doing proper backups, seeing what your battery is doing indepth (since you need root on 4.4 to do that), customizing your ui..... All benefits of rooting. And controlling your battery drain also.
Some people seem to have great battery out of the box.... And some don't. So if yours is good, and none of the above matters to you, then there's probably no reason to root.
Greenify is more helpful for stopping apps that like to come on after certain events, or stay on after you use them. Like maps for example. You can make it a user app with titanium backup and greenify it so it stays off when you don't need it. Another example, games. Allot of games run on their own and take a toll on your battery. You can hibernate them and make sure when you aren't playing them, they stay off.
But like I said... As far as battery goes...... If your battery is great unrooted, then no need to root for that reason.
Sent from my XT1058 using Tapatalk
I rooted regardless. Even though my battery life is excellent. I wanted Ad block, and the circular battery percentage without widgets. Maybe a few other things, but I like the control you have with root. So I will always do it.

I have found that when I leave intelligent voice commands on, android OS keeps eating my battery because the phone never really enters in deep sleep, I guess it's because it needs to be awake for the command to work
When I disable it, the battery really gets improved, with voice commands on I get 1% drop per hour overnight, with it turned off, I am able to get by 8 hours with 0 to 1% drop.
Also, if I have voice off but 3g/4g/wifi on, even if I don't get notifications, my phone do not enter in deep sleep, it goes back to the 1% drop per hour.
On the daily usage, I didn't see much of a difference between localization on neither of the 3 options (high accuracy, battery saving and the other one), but I noticed a slight difference between Google Now on and off.
In the end, I get a great battery life without voice commands and google now, once I got 2 days and a few hours with light to moderate usage (3g and wifi on all the time, almost 4 sot, some browsing, whatsapp, facebook, a few phone calls and photos), but it comes to the point that I could have any other phone to have the basic android function and get a great battery life, the point for which I got the moto x are those great features at the price of some battery, c'est la vie, with all those things on I am still able to get through the day, so I'm really happy with it, even the android OS having a huge battery consumption.
I had to freeze Motorola SLPC service (and related processes) to stop from having so many CPU wakeups. I greenify'ed one or two things but they honestly weren't really responsible for the problem. It's all those damn cpu wakeups. Basically froze all things Moto (except for AD, TC, and Assist) and it seems to have gone away. I even set my network accuracy back to high (some people stated that leaving it on Device Only was the only non-battery killer).
At this point, I'm thinking I'll return the X and keep the N5. The Moto X situation on XDA is looking to become another Rezound situation (where none of the users think there's anything that needs improving on the phone and development is non-existent short of bounties and flamewars).
For the first time, I wish I could have the OEM OS with just a few CM/other ROM cherry picks. As it is now, I don't even have a recovery image on the phone. I could live with that, except that I can't flash anything to the phone and Xposed only goes so far.
Currently can't have dbm in status bar, no Voice+, no encrypted messaging. Moto Assist doesn't turn on BT when in driving mode which is a shame because my car is my BT trusted device, speaking the PIN to unlock my phone seems to just get the voice command sequence stuck..
