[Q] Bootloader - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
so do you guys have a thread about bootloader unlocking? Didn't find it.
And do i need to unlock it? Just root and install recovery? Like in this rom thread forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/development/rom-existenz-v5-0-0-ultra-edition-10-4-t2349656 (i can't post clickable links yet)
And scroll down to how to install the rom and there it just is - install some firmware with flashtool, root and install recovery. Where is the bootloader stuff? Or it depends from the rom? help.

You only need an unlocked bootloader for non-stock based roms, such as Cyanogenmod, Paranoid Android, AOSP etc and those based off them, as they need a custom kernel.
Stock based custom roms do not require an unlocked bootloader, as long as they use an unmodified stock kernel. The rom thread will specify if you need an unlocked bootloader in most cases.

[Q] Unlocked Bootloader VS Locked Bootloader.

Hey guys,
as we all know, there has been a work around to gain root access and flash custom recovery to locked bootloader devices.
The only thing i heard was, that by doing that, NFC would not work anymore (but can be fixed) and your bootloader will have the status changed to locked forever (also believe there is a fix for this)
So i just want you guys' insights on what are the advantages of bootloader unlocking apart from the above,
Cheers guys~
I'd also love to know what's not possible with a locked bootloader.
My biggest question is whether I could still use droidwall since that's what keeps me from getting huge accidental data bills.
- The NFC works, I just tried it with a credit card as well as with one of the smart tags that Sony gave with the box.
- The Bravia Engine is disabled, however there will eventually be a workaround for this one as you can already get Bravia Engine version 1 running whenever you wish even with the unlocked bootloader, not the version 2 just yet. However, my take on this is quite positive as I appreciate realistic colours more to over saturated bright and overly contrasting colours, hence why I don't like AMOLEDs for instance.
- Other than that I have not noticed anything different in my device. Mind you it's much better since the unlock, as I have already flashed a custom ROM, I'm using Revolution but there are some really good other ones too, with all the bloatware gone, you can clear the bloatware you do not want without a custom ROM. I also have a custom kernel now, using Doom's kernel with no overclocks.
- Oh and I also have a mod for configurable switches in my notifications area so no reason to go in and out of Settings application or use Sony's laggy widgets.
- The ability to use AdFree and other root requiring applications is a great plus for me as well.
I think its very confusing. My bootloader is unlockable, and i would like a custom rom, but not sure what to do, and what i will break and not break. Its a bit of a jungle.

BE is DRM so umlocking means losing them forever, unless someone find how to relock BL again and restore BE
With unlocked BL you can flash any Rom and kernel.
With locked you can flash only stock based Rom and can't flash CM roms

There is a twrp for locked boot loaders now
Does that still mean we can only flash stock based ROMs?

Twrp is just a recovery, like CWM recovery
So still you can only flash stock based Rom
To flash CM Rom or any Rom that is based on CM or even AOKP roms, you need unlocked BL.
These Roms use a different kernel than stock kernel.
Unlocked BL is needed to flash these custom kernels in kernel partition
Go to XS dev section, you will see alot of Roms that need unlocked BL

Sorry for confusing you like this.
I will say it in more clear way
With locked BL, the only thing you can do is to flash stock based roms.
With unlocked BL,
-can flash stock based roms,
-Custom based Roms,
-Stock based kernel
-Custom based kernel
So you can't flash doomlord's kernel with locked BL

My favourite part with an unlocked bootloader is that with proper knowledge you can handle memory handling, CPU scheduling, under or over voltages on your CPU/GPU, etc.
So really the unseen side of things, my Xperia Z goes 2.5 days with one full charge with the modded kernel I have, using AOSP with nothing unused installed.
I wouldn't have been able to achieve that with a locked bootloader.
And I did not really like how overly saturated blues became with Bravia Engine anyway, so nothing lost on that side really.
I unlocked after the first 24hours of stock use.

First off all, why have you posted a link to the S section when secondly, there is two types of recoveries you can find and should use in this section.

Bootloader needs to be unlocked.
But you can install stock based roms.
Just look in the dev section and read up on the roms.

You are stuck. You can only flash stock-based ROMs. There are several in the Development section. I am currently using the Hybrid (Stock/CM10) ROM.

You're stuck. Your bootloader is probably unable to be unlocked. You can only go for stock-based roms. Roms like CyanogenMod or AOKP needs an unlocked bootloader.

Yes, you can use stock (XPERIA T) FTF's - just skip the baseband portion before you being flashing so you keep your AT&T baseband.
Then root with whatever method is needed
Then install CWM recovery
Then yes - you can flash stock-based (XPERIA T!) roms. You can usually tell the rom is stock/Locked Bootloader/LBL-friendly in the title of the thread, or in the first few posts of the thread. Also, I don't know how important this is - but also look to see what stock kernel the rom is based on (LT30p 141? 145? 489?). Stock kernel zips can be flashed via CWM recovery (I know that my Bell LT30a works fine with LT30p kernels, but I wonder if the AT&T LT30at will also be fine with it?). My favourite ROMS have been XperimenT and T-Hybrid so far... Good luck
And always keep your stock FTF handy! Because if any flashing you do doesn't work, you can always quickly fall back on a fresh whole FTF flash that is appropriate for your phone. Then the fun starts all over
Kernel
I did flash the kernel 145 from the T idk what really went wrong but my phone stuck on the sony logo
also i use XperimenT rom and flash it using CWM it install in about 7 secs which doesnt seems right . any suggestions ?
Problem solved

after trying diffrent method and days of trouble shooting with my friend
LaZiODROID there is a solution, using cwm(v9) would not format your system and data files thats the reason why the rom hangs at the sony logo because no system files were installed if u check the log, using cwm(v8) for the T,TL is the most stable and will install the rom and kernel with ease. Remeber to always wipe/factory reset then format system and in advance settings wipe dalvik before u install any rom.

[Q] about unlocked bootloader

Hey guys.
I want to unlock Bootloader but i have a few questions.
What can i do when i unlocked Bootloader?
For example can i install any stock rom when phone bricked or anytime?
And What can't i do?
Last question is What shouldn't i do? i mean What i do my phone is bricked?
I'm so sorry for my bad english :/ Plz help me.
With an unlocked bootloader you are able to install custom Kernels. CyanogenMod based ROMS require a diffrent kernel and this requires an unlocked bootloader.
You need to follow this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2354721
AND REMEMBER TO BACKUP YOUR TA PARTITION!!!!!!

Flashing ROM with Locked Bootloader?

Hi there,
At the moment I'm running Android 4.4.2 Stock ROM, but I want to switch to MIUI V5. I would like to know if it's possible to do this while having a locked Bootloader.
P.S.: First I used the towelroot-method to get root acces, then I installed SuperSU and CWM Recovery. So that's already done.
It should be possible. Take a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xpe...-miu-z-4-2-2-multilang-v2-5-10-3-1-2-t2467408
Just follow the steps for locked bootloaders.

Thank you for the fast reply! I'll try it. By the way are there any bugs in the ROM I've mentioned? I can't read any Chinese and Google Translation doesn't translate that well.
Isn't MIUI based on AOSP/CM? If it is, then you cannot flash it on a locked bootloader.
Edit - It seems the rom that gripfly linked to can be flashed on locked bootloaders. Disregard my post. ?

Too bad it's an outdated ROM. I would love to see the newest MIUI ROM running on this beauty, but I'm too scared to try it out and mess it up, and then risking to lose the DRM key.
Edit: Are there any good ROMS with nice GUI apart from Sony's UI for the Xperia Z? The MIUI ROM V5 is based on Android 4.2.2, which is more a downgrade than an upgrade...

There are many good ROMs on the forum.
Actually, UI varies from person to person so it's very difficult to say which one is better, you can search in the forum and find a suitable one.
As for me, I highly recommend PA which include many good features.
Locked bootloader means stock based ROMs only.

You can install all custom roms with locked bootloader too
assuming that Rom uses a stock kernel. (No CM based ROMS)
