<safestrap 3.71>Backup stock rom and restore to rom slot? - Galaxy S 4 Active Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can one simply backup their stock ROM and restore it to a rom slot? If I could, I wouldnt be as worried trying out different mods.

Yes, you can absolutely do that. Please watch this video to learn about the basics including backing up and restoring ROM slots. It's for a different phone, but it works exactly the same on the S4 Active.

Thank you. That makes me less worried about trying different mods.
Edit: I made a new rom slot, restored the backup to it, and installed xposed. Thank you for your answer. On my second GS4A, did not want to come close to having to restore this one after my last mishap.

Got permission to root and clean up stock rom or load custom.

I received the SGH-i957 for work and they told us not to add any weird apps. What I want to do is remove some the crappy AT&T apps to use less resources. I have rooted an EVO 4g and a HTC Arrive Windows Phone as well as my old HTC Touch Diamond. I have been reading the different threads and I am just curious what you guys think the best method is?
It really doesn't use more resources

If your work said to not mess with apps then I wouldn't really root it.
If you don't care about that, then just follow the rooting thread. I personally like the kernel root method

I will go into more detail I guess. I want to backup how they gave it to me and run it custom, be it remove apps or a new rom. I am worried about some kind of privacy issues. With my HTC Evo 4g I could backup the original rom completely and then uninstall programs or install a new rom.

Flash twrp and make a nandroid backup then do your root process.
Sent from my SGH-I727 using xda premium
Yeah, I am definitely rooting it. It is ungodly slow with only a few programs on it and it keeps using at&t data even though I have removed all widgets and have very few apps installed. I know that know one wants to hear me say this but every time I use Android I dislike it more and more. I am sorry if I offend anyone.

Ok, I got permission from the boss to root and either clean up the stock rom, remove crap, or load a custom rom. So should I just follow the guide in this and if I have to run a custom rom use the on in this thread. Do I have to use the twrp and nandroid backup to make a backup? Or can I restore the stock rom buy using Method 2 after I follow the Method 1 in the root guide?

Ready to change my old android 4.0 for 4.2.2

Hi people!!!
I'm ready to change my old android 4.0 for a new one, i'm thinking in 4.2.2 because it's newer and i think that has less bugs that this version.
But i'm worried about my apps, and services, like my gps points and my advace in my games and download again everything!!!
So, i want to know if exist any app to avoid download all again, and keep my info, like my notes, my downloads and everything.
Thanks in advance for the help!!!

Google will back up all of your apps if you opted to do so. Make a nandroid back up in recovery, as well as a TiBu backup. Then when you isntall 4.2.2 you should be able to recover everything with those 3 backups.

Going from 4.0 to 4.2.2 could cause issues though so be warned that after you restore your data you could encounter FC's. Not saying it will happen but there is always a chance. Especially considering that there is a completely different partition layout between where you are and where you are wanting to go.

Well wouldn't he just flash 4.2.2 twice, then the gapps, and restore non-system apps and be fine?

Yes that would work perfectly as far as restoring apps. However the restore of user data for the apps so he has his last save point on a game or is already logged into Facebook might be a different story. With the use of the /datadata partition in JB it could cause issues. But it might not I really don't know.

Good point, didn't think of that. I would think the apps should be able to find the correct path though when restoring backups from ICS to JB...worst comes to worst just move it manually

I know that cm10.1 has a symbolic link, data/data >> datadata, that gets created when you flash it. I imagine that is only there to allow legacy settings to work.

So, i want just one answer, what it's better for me.
Make that backup and restore with all its problems, or just download all my apps again and lose the data.
Remember i am a noob in this world, and i think that i can afford the time of install all again.

Try both out. I would start by doing all your backups and then upgrade and try to restore your data. If it works then go with it. If you have problems resort to the other option.

Sharing data between ROM's

I wasn't able to find another thread about this...
Is it possible to share app data between the stock ROM slot and the other ROM slots, or do they all run on their own system partitions? Is something like the MoDaCo switch for the HTC One possible?
Thanks!

You cannot share data between different ROMs. I don't know much about MoDaCo but I have not heard of anything like that working with the D4. What you can do is use an app like Titanium Backup or ROM Toolbox to back up your apps and data and restore to your new ROM. I use Titanium and it works wonderfully.

What Can we do with a locked bootloader?

Can someone tell me what we will actually be able to download if bootloader remains looked? Can we flash certain types of Rom or mods? Or can we do nothing?

Should work the same as the S4 MF update that locked down the bootloader. You should be able to root but as for custom roms and CWM/TWRP we're out of luck.
Coming from a S4 running CM10.2 I'm not going to like using the standard rom but will get used to it I guess.
So even with the bootlegged locked we should be able to tour so we can use TB to backup and restore?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk 4
I have a locked MF3 firmware S4 and I'm running 3 different ROMs that are hot swappable thanks to Safestrap developed my Hashcode so even with a locked bootloader you can do something. Only thing is for now we are limited to internal storage for the ROM slots can't create them on external SD card but Hashcode has been working on that. Also we can only flash TW ROMs since we can't flash a custom kernel but that is also being worked on, I believe they want to be able flash a kernel with kexec. I have an AT&T S4 and currently swapping between an international Foxhound ROM, Google Play ROM, and well the stock ROM.

Even tho I don't have any phone that has a bootloader. (i don't live in the USA Neither)
But if your Bootloader is locked you cannot Flash CWM or TWRP or flash custom roms (Because they need CWM or TWRP).
Sorry if I'm wrong. I don't have any phone with locked bootloader. Hope this helps.

Ditto... which is why I am returning my AT&T Note 3 less than 24 hrs after I purchased it.
My fault for not researching the bootlocker issue, but no way am I going to give up Titanium Backup. It has saved my tail more than once.
I'm also coming from an att S4. There has not been a bootloader unlock exploit but they do have some work around exploits like loki & safestrape. Loki is out bc they've already patched that so at this point I just hope we get root bc without that you don't have a fighting chance at custom roms
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
All I want to do is remove the AT&T bloat as well as the Samsung bloat. When I took my stock Note 2 and installed Cleanrom on it it felt like the phone got a cpu boost. Everything was smoother and faster.
With root, can we uninstall crap that is blocked from being removed while stock? I can live with a locked bootloader if I can just get as close to a stripped rom as possible. I'm pretty new to this stuff so forgive the newbie question.

You can't flash ROMS on the ATT Note 3 yet. There is safe strap that is still in Alpha testing and is not yet 100% working. It however is not a true root and eats up a large amount of internal memory where the image file of the ROM is stored. There is a thread on Safestrap and how it works. Use it at your own risk. Outside of that it is IMPOSSIBLE to flash an ATT Note 3 right now..

The issue is that even with safe strap you can't flash any ROM. The ROM first has to be tailored to work with and around safe strap since it is not truly a ROM but a bootloader bypass and works a little differently. So until developers either jump on board and tweak ROMS to work with safestrap or they wait till the bootloader is unlocked, there are no ROMS right now to flash..

I said you could not flash them reliably and have them 100% functional. There is still testing being conducted on all the ROMS claimed to work and no one has confirmed 100% functionality with all apps and hardware. So they are still not certified reliable like a real flash would be..
If you have tested the three you have used 100% on both hardware and apps then you need to get in there and say so because they are looking for 100% proof of function confirmation..
Not going to argue semantics with you.
I will say that I have flashed to rom slots 1 thru 4 and the stock slot and restored backups to them all with no issues. And am currently running the ported xnote7 with no issues at all. So yes, roms can be installed to AT&T Note3 phones.

Have you been actively participating in the development of this phone? I've been doing this for years and I'll be honest. 99% of custom rooms do not run 100% perfect or functional. That being said, instead of telling everyone we can't flash ROMS. Why not tell them what we do have and let him decide if it is what He is looking for.

I am just going by all the "this does not work, or this fails, or my apps no longer load" and the list goes one of post in the SS thread right now.. For some it maybe stable but it seems the majority is having more problems then they had with stock.
