well you have to be rooted and unlocked before you can get soff. if you're already good there sometimes firewater has a problem with the hardware regardless of version date... if you already unlocked and got root try doing it again then trying firewater oncemore. if that doesnt work you might want to try to get a different device from sprint/assurion

Ive found out this...
The HTC M8's are made in different "batches". Each batch of phones they produce will generally have all the same internal parts, from the same parts manufacturer. SOME batches of phones have internal board parts that came from a DIFFERENT parts manufacturer, because HTC ran out of the last run of parts from previous manufacturer. In other words, HTC may produce phones with exactly the same parts, but the parts may come from different manufacturers. So, certain parts from certain manufacturers make it not s-off-able.
This is my understanding, correct me if you think I'm wrong, or you know something I don't.
I'm going to exchange mine and better luck with the 2nd, hopefully it will come from a "good batch"

I bought a "rooted"phone, but I never used android before. I'm guessing the build number? Mine is FRF91. What are some benefits of rooting?
FRF91 is just the version of Android.
Best way is to see if there is an app installed called Super User. Other than that, try downloading an app that required root. Just search for riot on the market.
Search if you want to know what root is for. If you're new, I suggest not rooting your phone.

OK thanks, I don't have Super User and noticed when using N1Torch it wont let me go super bright since it can't find root. So I guess not. lol. Don't worry, I'm fine for now without rooting, but I come from WinMo having ORD, so I'll need to know how to get custom roms soon. lol

Perhaps "rooted" in this case meant bootloader-unlocked then? Does your N1 show a padlock icon on the bottom of the first X screen when you boot up? If so, the hard part (and your software warranty) is already done
I know its sim unlocked, ill check for the lock now
EDIT: no padlock, good or bad?

All Nexus ones are sim unlocked.
As for no padlock, means you bootloader is locked, which is good. meaning you're completely stock.
There are methods of loading custom roms without unlocking bootloader.
Unlock bootloader (you see padlock) means your Nexus One's software warranty is void.
I don't worry about voiding warranty, that's the first thing I do with most of my electronics lol

In that case, unlocking the bootloader is by far the easiest way to hack this phone
Once you've got the android SDK installed on your computer, all it takes is the command "fastboot oem unlock" to get your phone's bootloader unlocked. How much easier could it get?
Ok great. I guess ill play around with the phone stock for about a week
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
You don't need to unlock the bootloader to root or flash custom roms anymore though so I would suggest using the alternative methods found in the development section and leave your warranty intact. Although most people haven't had a problem replacing their phones with unlocked bootloader there's just no point in risking it anymore because there's no need to do it that way imo.

I wouldn't expect any time soon.
Virgin is very tight lipped about it which usually means it's still a ways off.
I can't wait for the update, I am excited to see how well it works on this phone.
I'm going to guess October some time.
We should get a pool going on this one and see who wins
I'm still deciding whether to wait for the update or just put another official gingerbread/custom rom onto the phone.
Reason is, we have a way to S-OFF our phones via computer for FREE - which i've already done

I'm using a Bell incredible s. I took the s-off and originally flashed the gingerbread stock ruu. Nice to have it unbranded. I'm also using it on Rogers now. It's not hard to do. Yes just picked mine up today. Would love to know how to root this device also.
With this phone being released on AT&T on November 6th there will most certainly be a tremendous increase in the desire for root and dev involvement. It won't be long before this phone has it's own forum and a whole lot of XDA love. I'm one of the many that has been waiting for this phone to come out since it was leaked back in May and I can hardly wait to get my hands on one!
Adding support to this thread. Would love to get root for my Raider! Will also help out this process in anyway I can.

Does the raider/vivid have the ability to do HDMI out?
it has a mhl port which is physically identical to a micro usb, it does do hdmi out but you need an adapter
google mhl to hdmi and it will all come up
Do we know if the boot loader is locked or unlocked?
Add your vote here to get an HTC Holiday/Raider/Vivid forum added.

I'm debating about unlocking my phone and instal a Rom right now or wait and see. I usually root all phones but I was one of those dumbasses that flashed my EVO 3D with the virgin mobile version. Lucky me I didn't have most of the side effects people were complaining about. I just had the VM banners and some times text messages errors, but CM 10.1 make it go away.
Anyone have any cons about unlocking my phone and flash a rom right now or wait until we get S-Off if (ever happens).

you just need to unlock and install either twrp or cwm recovery.
From what I've read this really isn't a big deal. Nexus devices are not S-Off either. All this prevents you from flashing are the radio and bootloader which are not usually modified.

True, although for asop, aokp. and other open source roms a different bootloader maybe required. For the evo 3d the ics bootloader that installed with the firmware from the ota would give bootloops if a asop or aokp rom was flashed.if as a user you would never flash anything other than custom roms for your current version of android then yes an unlocked bootloader is all you need. Another example was the htc flyer. That device shipped with gingerbread when htc released the ota for honeycomb every user was in a hurry to install it, many had flashers remorse and wished to go back to gingerbread. With s-on they were out of luck.
This phone has features we may never see in aosp. I'm holding off on that. Nothing wrong with sense5 though honestly, its way better than any previous versions so far

Incorrect. You need to flash a superuser app and its binaries as well.
this zip is supposed to turn off read/write protection Sprint_One_Root_Disable_System_RW_Protection (1).zip
I was thinking we are a rare bunch of folks that are control freaks that root our phones.
But it amazes me to see things like Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, ROM Manager apps very near the highest volume Android Apps in the Market !!!
These are obviously "Root" user apps.
Maybe it's because we wipe our phones so often we distort the statistics
I love how they say they don't allow s-off because of "warranty" reasons yet at the bottom of the page it says unlocking your device will render the warranty void. #likewhat

This is somewhat false. The reason it was causing boot loops was because of the boot.img not flashing properly. It was required when the hboot got updated that we used a process such as "HTC dumblock" to flash the boot.img. Currently for our Ones we are fine because the hboot will allow proper flashing of the boot.img yet in the past, some future updates have blocked this feature. I for one will always want s-off. It gives me full control

...and by flashing an internation firmware in case of One sold by sprint also the sim lock is removed?
Sorry, but there seems to be a new post every other day about people borking their Sprint phones because they flash a Rom from the "HTC One" forum.
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
-------------------------------------
ROMS from the international forums WILL mess up your phone and you will be lucky to fix it after that! I get you want the shiny new 4.2.2 but those ROMS will not --I repeat-- WILL NOT WORK ON THE SPRINT HTC ONE.
Sure, they used to, but once they moved onto 4.2.2 they will not flash.
I feel this should be sticky in every thread on the Sprint HTC One forum.

From what I've seen all the major ROM's say in some fashion or another that it won't work for Sprint so it's mostly people just not reading. Maybe they could make the font about it possibly destroying phones if you are on Sprint bigger...and flashing...surrounded by naked women. Then maybe people will see it.
Unless your a Dev or know what your doing I wouldn't flash non sprint things... I know the partition labels and boot.IMG stuff so I have gotten things to work but not for a noobie
