[Q] Sony Xperia Z video transfer problem - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
Forgive my ignorance but I need help! Yesterday I took some great video footage and went to transfer them to PC this morning in the normal manner that has worked many times previously. Let me add that the videos played back just perfectly on the phone, HOWEVER when I then transferred them to PC, all of the files show, but only 2 will play back, the others are just BLACK. Nothing can be seen. I would DESPERATELY like to somehow get these files back!!! Stupidly I recently changed my file transfer settings to delete files after transfer because I have had no previous problems so now the files are gone from my phone Would you know if there is ANY WAY I can get these files to play?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Sharon.

Mp3 and Mp4 have stopped playing

Hi, hope someone can help me suddenly all mp3 files are unplayable on my phone. When I try to select them in the music player I get the message 'Sorry, the player does not support this type of audio file.' They worked fine yesterday and I only discovered this when my phone rang and there was no ringtone.
I rooted my phone 4 days ago and put Cyanogen v5.0.4.1 on and its fantastic this is the only thing thats gone wrong so far. I don't know that its anything to do with the rom it could be something else.
Is wiping my only option, does this mean I have to reload everything on from scratch I did a Nand backup as soon as I put the rom on my phone and another yesterday do I restore from a backup? Forgive my ignorance this is all new to me.
Just tried video files and they don't play either!

[Q] Help! Hard reset done and gallery hasn't restored.

So after encountering the annoying 505 error I did a full back up via the Backup app as sync manager on the laptop wasn't playing ball.
Did the hard factory reset and then restored from the back up file I had made 10 minutes beforehand.
Most things have restored but I went to check a picture and ALL GONE!
Things like whatsapp messages and contacts didn't restore either.
What can do to recover the lost images?
and typically none of it worked to solve the 505 error.
I know this isn't the usual standard of question on this forum but is anyone able to shed some light on my problem?
Does the HTC Backup program, back up images or is that an oversight on my part?
ok so it seems that i'm an idiot and htc doesn't back up images on an htc account back up.
I'm now trying to run my phone through recovery software (MagicCute Recovery) but the program won't recognize the phone, I guess because it's not a mass storage device and connects via MTP?
I read a guild to turn on developer mode and then turn on USB debugging but that hasn't made any difference.
If there a way to plug my phone in and the computer to recognize it as a mass storage device?

check google playstore for undelete software, plenty on there, be careful about how much you install or uninstall.
Dont know if your aware of this, but nothing is ever really deleted, its flagged as safe to be overwritten and hidden from the user, too much installing or un-installing apps will overwite the flagged images.

I am sure that when connected to a Linux machine it shows as an external drive...not sure if that helps at all ?
If what i suggest is true then you can run Linux within windows from a USB drive, but clearly your recovery software has to be a linux compatible version.
Just a suggestion rather than fact!

Currently browsing play store now, is there any you can recommend?
I wasn't fully aware of how it works but I knew I could recovery most with some nifty software. MagicCute has worked wonders in the past for me.
At least all my music is stored in music play store.
I found a PC based program to scan the phone but the phone requires to me rooted for that, although that was my main reason for joining this forum to root I'm a little apprehensive to do anything like that until I have saved my pics!
Cheers.

Someone else said they had great luck with DiskDigger Pro
Good luck!
Sorry sheppster, completely missed your reply somehow yesterday. Thanks for the suggestion.
Thanks clsa I'll give that a go once rooted.
I'm currently reading, reading watching and rewatching content on the rooting process. Very confusing for a complete and utter noob. A lot of content is spoken as if I have a clue, haha.
But I'm now registered on HTC DEV, all videos and content say to select all other supported devices due to the HTC One not being listed, but it is. I'm guessing HTC Dev has been updated since the guides were posted. Shall I click HTC One or still use other devices?
I installed Android Studio and also JDK which it asked for, but when continuing to install Android Studio I got the following message...
Is this detrimental to the use of the program or can I just continue?
Sorry this thread is going to turn into more of a rooting Q&A.
I now have sync manager working correctly and have made a back up on my laptop which I'm happier with than having something floating about in my HTC Account. So I think I'll go ahead and try unlocking my bootloader.
Well I have unlooked the bootloader now. Successfully? Not sure!
After confirming to unlock it then restarted and kept going round in circles, it's now saying "Android is upgrading" running through 253 apps. Nothing like the XDA video where it just restarts as a fresh phone.
I used the HTC One instructions from the drop down menu in the end.
Fingers crossed at the end of that it's working and I can continue to root.
Well considering I have an early start I've stayed up far too long messing around.
BUT! My phone is now rooted, I did attempt putting a venom rom on but it didn't install properly although I seem to have a large ammount of it's features here and there like being able to boot directly to bootloader or recovery from the power button.
But any way the lapcop software I had appeared to be useless, it found 603 images from various emails and programs files none on my actual pictures. I'm not running disk digger which again has found background images but still 85% left to scan.
I'm not holding out too much hope now as there's been a few files added and deleted to root and also reset again to root.
I'll update tomorrow how it went.
I didn't realise how cheap Disk Digger Pro was, so bought and ran that last night. I think it found touch under 4000 images but again mostly PNG program images.
It did manager to find 41 useful images though. It seemed to mainly pick up pictures which I had recently used on facebook, so annoyingly mainly recoverable images through facebook.
It picked up a lot of signatures from various emails and made a lot of duplicates. Not a bad effort for under 2 quid though.

Unable to download files after Lollipop upgrade

Hi everyone,
I finally upgraded to Lollipop on my device a couple days ago. I'm noticing a couple weird things like icons disappearing on my desktop using the Nova launcher, but mainly the one I'm worried about and which I noticed today, was my inability to download any file. I first noticed it on Dropbox; when I try to download something it comes up with an error "Storage full or Unavailable", however when trying to download an audio sent to me trough WhatsApp, fails as well. And lastly, I tried downloading a file in my Mega account which never even starts to download. I checked and have more than enough space both internally and the SD card.
I searched and found some people with the same Dropbox issue but no solution whatsoever.
If anyone here can help me, I'd really appreciate it.
The only fix I've seen for that problem is a reflash of the rom. That was quite a big problem for a lot on Nexus owners when Lollipop came out.

Accessing phone files without the touch screen?

Well it happened guys. Through some terrible luck, my phone dropped to the ground, shattering the screen and making the touch functions unusable. There are some photos on it from my vacation that I'd like to save, but when I connect it to the PC it doesn't recognize the device (Windows 10). I also can't unlock my phone since the touch screen doesn't work. So, is there any way I can at least back my photos up without using my phone's menu? Thanks for the help.
You can try using a USB mouse with an adaptor for micro USB. It worked on my Sony z1 when I broked my screen.

Make sure your photos aren't already backed up via Google Drive or Dropbox?
I know one friend who was worried, but ALL her smartphone pictures were auto backed up on Google Drive.
https://drive.google.com/drive/photos
Yes, Dropbox you have to configure, but apparently many phones are already configured to auto backup with Google Drive over Wi-Fi. At least hers was. Anyway, go to that URL and see...
I have mine auto-backup over Wi-Fi to both Dropbox and Google Drive.

EDIT:
As of beginning of August, Google Photos (separate app) took over for Google Drive Photos. So, all your pictures prior to the last six weeks may be at that URL above.

Help Request.. Recovering Deleted Christmas Video

Good morning everyone. I have been on these forums for awhile but couldn't remember my username.
Anyway, I have a Note 9 and yesterday was Christmas of course. I had recorded a video of my son opening his presents. He got a hold of the phone and deleted the video by accidentally. There is no backup of it. Phone is newer and backup wasn't set up yet.
Is there ANY way of recovering the deleted video? I have tried DiscDigger but it requires Root to recover deleted videos. And with my understanding there is no root for the Note 9? All help is appreciated as I feel terrible that we didn't take any pictures of him opening and now the only video is gone.
Thank you!
o6blin,
You are correct, there is no root & your video is gone.
Try to recapture that moment by giving him another package to open.
There is alot we cant do yet because of permissions.
Trust me, there are a ton of things that I can't do because of permissions.
Root would be perfect and we would be able to do what we want to do & how we want to do it without any resistance from the manufactures.
If root was discovered or released, this would be much of a better community with so much involvement from developers, app makers, theme bakers & such.
o6blin you are better off with a pure android so that you will never be in a situation as such or use the screen lock.
Regards,
There are programs that say they recover, ranging from $30-$59, videos without root. I've found a few, not many, people that say they work but not a convincing amount. I'm willing to spend that on memories. Any input?
Thanks for your help.

if it on ext sd yeah probably very easy to do.( just put sd card and a card reader and plug in a pc and use Recuva software)
if video was on internal storage, good luck.
btw stop using the camera or writing data because the more you wait the less chances of recovery is possible.
be careful that you aren't paying 50$ for someone to steal your phone.( they will probably ask you to send the phone and give your credentials or something.)
It was in internal storage yes. I've stopped using the phone for pictures and believe I found the video in the my files/cache but it is unopenable.
I know it's too late for this video, but I would send all pics and video to external SD card and turn on Google Photos backup settings.
can it be read by some recovering programs on pc when connecting yr phone to the pc ?

Try and download ES file explorer and it will give access to recycle bin, as long as you turn recycle bin on.

If you haven't written anything new onto your device yet. There is still a chance that you can recover that video. You would have to connect your device to a computer and run data recovery software on it. However if you have used your device since you have deleted your video. There is a chance that you won't be able to recover it as you may have partially or full written over the sections of the internal storage space it was stored on.
This is the exact reason why I always install dumpster on all my phones.
Check the play store an install it ... most likely u have lost the video but all other deleted will be saved in dumpster.

Give Samsung stars a call. I spoke to them a while back fixing a problem and he said he had helped another customer recover some photos that they had deleted by accident. Is worth a try
Possibly..
Connect your phone to a pc and allow data transfer. The phone now shows up in the explorer as mass storage. Maybe a recovery tool is able to recover some photos from the storage. Hope this works.
If you are a pie beta tester there is a recycle bin feature in the gallery app.
